19| TWO AND A HALF HOURS TOO LATE

"Kie!" Layla called out as she road the stolen skateboard into the garage, jumping off and pulling the skateboard up, "Did JJ get it? Did you get the key?"

"He got it." Kie nodded, watching as Layla laid the board down, "Did Sarah get to John B?"

"Yeah, she road my bike through the woods and met up with him." Layla nodded, taking a deep breath, "I brought as much food as I can. But I-"

Layla took a ragged breath as Kie looked worried, "Woah, hey, take a breath."

"I just-" Layla began, hunching over, "I feel like I can't breath."

"You have your inhaler on you?" Kie asked, checking Layla's bag, "Layla?"

"I'm okay." Layla nodded, inhaling but not feeling any breath come with it. Kie grabbed the red inhaler and put it in her hands. Layla took a long inhale as she finally felt like she could breath, "Jesus, that hadn't happened since eighth grade."

"Desperate times." Kie shrugged, glancing JJ's way as he got the boat ready, "Why couldn't you just tell me?"

"Tell you what?" Layla asked, grabbing her bag and throwing it up into the boat, making sure she packed the snacks she knew John B would always take from her house.

"That you were in love with her." Kie shrugged with a knowing look across her face, standing in the doorway, "I'm your best friend."

"That's why I didn't tell you." Layla commented with a sigh, not being able to make eye contact, "I didn't want you to hate me."

"I wouldn't hate you, Layla." Kie shook her head in disbelief, "I'm just confused."

Layla had to laugh, "Yeah, me too."

"Is Sarah not actually into John B?" Kie went on to question as Layla climbed up on the boat, "Was it a cover up?"

"I don't know, we didn't really talk about it last night." Layla shrugged her shoulders, "She said she loved me and she was gonna tell John B. You think she was for real?"

Kie didn't say anything, Layla frowned and nodded her head, "Yeah, i'm not sure either."

The dirt bike heard as Layla crawled down, feeling JJ grab her waist and help her down with a rub to her head.

"Pope, finally!" Kie called out as she walked over toward the opening of the garage.

"Hey, there." a new voice rung. Layla looked over immediately, finding Rafe Cameron coming around the corner with wide, strung out eyes. "What's goin on? JJ? Layla? How you guys doing?"

Kie walked back over toward the due as Barry whistled from behind them, walking out from the other opening, "Well, well."

He pulled a gun from his back pocket, aiming it at JJ as his hands immediately went up, "See, don't think I forgot about me and you on the side of the road."

"It's you and I." Layla spoke up quickly, looking at JJ worried.

"What'd you say to me, pretty girl?" Barry asked her in disbelief, taking the aim off JJ and aiming it at Layla for a moment with a laugh, "I'm here, because I want my mother fuckin money!"

His free fist flew toward JJ, the aim falling off of Layla to hit JJ again.

"JJ! JJ!" Kie yelled out worried, Rafe picking her up and pulling her away. Layla lunged for Barry, throwing her shoulder into him as the gun dropped. Layla grabbed hold of it quickly, raising her shaky hands and pointing it at the back of Barry's head.

"Let him go!" Layla yelled as Barry heard the safety come off, "Let him go or ill shoot you!"

Barry rose his hands and backed off, leaving JJ beat on the ground, turning to face Layla, "Put it down."

"No." Layla said back, gripping the gun harder in hopes of stop shaking.

"You murdered Peterkin!" Kie hollared out as she stared at Rafe in disbelief. Layla looked over the second Rafe wrapped his hands around Kies neck, taking her gaze off Barry just a moment as the shorter man grabbed the gun and hit Layla in the face with it. The throbbing pain hit her head immediately, hitting the ground as blood flew from her nose.

Pope hit Rafe twice with a crow bar while Barry gave Layla and JJ a few more hits and kicks, "Don't touch her!"

"Rafe!" Barry hollered out, going to leave the duo before JJ grabbed his ankle, tripping him on the ground as the gun flew.

"Kie! Kick it!" JJ yelled at her.

Layla stood up immediately, pulling Barry off the ground and kicking him in the gut so he'd stumble backwards. JJ grabbed hold of him, throwing he drug dealer into the side of the boat.

"You all right?" Layla asked Kie worried as the taller girl looked at Layla's busted lip in worry, "I don't even feel it, I swear."

She lied, it hurt like a bitch.

"Pope." Kie called out when she saw their friend had been hitting Rafe more then what he needed, "Okay, Pope! Pope! That's good! Stop!"

"Hey!" JJ left Barry on the ground, hurrying over, "He's had enough, dude."

Pope grabbed a wire from the ground, wrapping it around Rafes neck and pulling on it harshly.

"Pope! Enough! Snap out of it!" Layla yelled out in disbelief, never once seeing this side of him in her whole life.Β  JJ got behind him, yelling at him to stop while tugging him back.

"Look at me!" Kie shouted as Pope looked her way, dropping Rafe as he took deep, raged breaths. Layla glanced down at Rafe, making sure he was alive as the Cameron boy took deep, violent breaths, "Okay. We gotta go, we gotta go."

"What do I tell my dad?" Layla asked as they pulled up to the spot John B was meeting them at, "He's gonna kill me."

"He's not gonna touch you." JJ spoke as they looked over, finding John B crawling out of the car. Layla ran over immediately, hugging him tightly as he hugged her back.

"No way." JJ laughed as he noticed the cop car John B had gotten out of, "You've got to be kidding me."

"Took ACAB to a whole new level, my man." Layla laughed as she hit him in the arm, "I always thought I was cooler then you, I absolutely know i'm not anymore."

"Shoupe let me take it for a spin." John B spoke up as he pulled away from Layla.

"Okay. That's believable. I'll believe that for now." Kie laughed as she hoped off the boat, hugging him tightly.

"It wasn't easy, bro, but we got the Phantom for you." JJ called out, dangling the keys in the air as the sunset bounced off of them, "And she runs like she was made yesterday."

"Wait, where's Sarah?" Layla asked, realized the blonde hadn't been here.

"She's going to meet me here, we couldn't go together." John B spoke as Layla nodded her head, taking his bag and loading it onto the boat for him.

"You ready to go?" JJ asked, moving past Layla and laying the keys in his hand.

"No, Sarah- she-" John B looked out at the water, "She should have been here by now."

"We haven't seen her, man." Pope shook his head.

"Okay, well, i'm not leaving without her." John B said quickly. Layla looked away guilty, because she wasn't sure if Sarah said anything, wasn't sure if she even would. But what she did know was John B was in love with her, and Layla had been the girl Sarah cheated on him with last night.

"John B, look at me." JJ spoke up quickly, "I know you feel bad for leaving, but there's no time, man. You've got plenty of gas, plenty of food. Once you get around that point, it's a straight shot across the sound to Dismal Swamp, okay? Once you get there, lay low, all right? Hang out for a couple weeks and then go overland, cross the border at Brownsville, you got that? Hey! You got that?"

"Yeah, yeah. Brownsville." John B repeated, clearly an emotional wreck and out of it, "What about Sarah? What if she's still out there?"

"There's a board in Kies car, i'll go look for her and bring her back home." Layla spoke up as thunder was heard above them, "I'll be quick, if she's out there she's gotta be close and I know my way around this area well."

"You promise?" John B asked.

"Yeah, I promise." Layla nodded quickly, squeezing his hand.

"All right. Saddle her up, saltwater cowboy. Let's do this!" JJ announced, slapping John B on the shoulder.

John B climbed up on the boat before turning back to them, "Hey. Hey. I'm sorry for basically... throwing us off a cliff with this whole treasure hunt thing."

"Always wanted to go cliff diving anyways." Layla shrugged with a grin his way

"We were bound to run off a cliff at some point, right?" JJ spoke up, going off Layla's words. He pulled Pope and Layla into his side while she put a arm around Kie, "At least we did it together, though. Pogue style."

"Pogue style." John B repeated as he cried.

"Get out of here! Please!" Kie called out to him, getting emotional herself.

"See you in two months, down in Mexico." Pope added in with a serious look.

"I packed you though chocolate berry packs, you're gonna be fine." Layla nodded, looking toward John B, "Let's just hope they aren't old."

"Love you!" JJ added in as John B headed toward the drivers seat.

"Wait, wait a second." he stopped, looking their way again as he stared at Layla, "Tell Sarah I said goodbye, okay?"

"I'll tell her everything." Layla nodded with a sad look, "I swear."

"Don't forget. Across the border at Brownsville. okay?" JJ spoke up again as John B started the boat.

The four untied to boat form the dock, throwing it off onto the deck as John B backed the boat up, waving toward them once again as they waved back.

"Just be quick, okay? The storms gonna come in really soon." Pope said as he got the surf board out of the car for Layla.

"Yeah, a hour max and you come back immediately." Kie spoke as Layla nodded, throwing the board into the water and jumping off the dock. When she swam up, JJ squatted down to look at her.

"Be safe out there." he said as Layla grinned, "Hey, don't worry about your dad, okay? I'll handle him."

"You promise?" Layla asked him, climbing up on the board.

"I promise." JJ nodded, messing up her wet hair with a final grin. Layla waved towards the three before she paddled off, deeper into the open waters as the thunder hit above her once again.

Despite what it seemed, Layla Winters was not stupid. She was stupid in love, that was the problem. So when it began to storm, the waves getting heavy and the rain blinding her, she hadn't turned around, "Sarah!"

Layla inhaled as the wave crashed over her, pulling her down some before she came back up with gulps of air and coughing up water, "Sarah! Where are you!"

Layla had searched for nearly two and a half hours now for Sarah, two and a half hours too late that was. The storm was bad, worse then what she imagined it would be. Layla paddled hard, her arms burning the worse they ever had, "Sarah!"

Layla's throat hurt from yelling, it hurt from the amount of water she swallowed. But nothing hurt worse then when the large wave crashed her way, over taking her body and board and sucking her deep down into the ocean.
