1| KOOK QUEEN
Chapter One| I Met Sarah In The Bathroom
Layla wasn't a bad kid. She kept her grades up, she did as many clubs as she could, she smiled often, helped people out when she could, tried to stay on the positive side most of the time. But one little slip up set off her preacher father, one little slip up had her sent away to a church camp for the first month of summer. He almost sent her away for the whole summer but after many begs, having her friends convince him they'd keep her in line, he agreed on one month.
Layla knew deep down she shouldn't have lied but sending her away for one screw up pissed her off. She hated the fact that she knew he wasn't sending her away because she lied about going to her job, he sent her away because she went to meet up with a girl. Layla loved girls, she hated the idea of men and found herself only being able to picture a future or relationship with a woman. She was okay with that, she never had any internal homophobia and her four friends accepted her which was all she cared about. But her dad owned the only church on the cut, being a pastor and thinking everything in the world had to do with god did not sit well with him.
"Man and women is how it goes."
"How will you have kids?"
"Homosexuals are sins."
"It's against god, Layla."
Layla knew he loved her, and she loved him. Despite his beliefs Roman never yelled at Layla for it, simply telling her these things and letting her know he didn't agree with her choices. Even though it wasn't a choice at all but he didn't wanna hear that.
The church camp Layla attended was strictly targeted to the gays. Before you panic, hang on, they never once inflicted pain on Layla... conversion therapy was illegal in their state and she couldn't imagine her dad, who never agreed with spanking or hitting your child as punishment, would send her somewhere they'd hurt her.
She did get woken with pray each morning and they specifically preach on homosexuality. It took everything Layla had to bite her tongue instead of going off about how a bunch of old people wrote the bible, not god, about how god said to love all people. But she knew it would only land her here longer which was keeping her away from her friends who she missed dearly.
But on a happier note you'll all be pleased to know Layla was currently on a ship with Tourons back to the OBX. She stood at the front of the ship, the island getting closer and closer as a smile spread across her face. The familiar salty water smell putting comfort over her body immediately, ready to get back in the water and surf her heart out. She couldn't wait to help Kie save the turtles again, couldn't wait till she could get high with JJ again, couldn't wait to discuss colleges with Pope again, couldn't wait to humiliate John B when she takes his waves from him. All around she just couldn't wait to see her friends again, her family again.
Layla was the first one off the boat, throwing her bag onto her back as she took off toward the beach. She knew what day it was, the get together on the beach where pogues would attempt to get with tourons as they would drink illegally but no one cared. Her flip flops tripped Layla up a few times, rubbing blisters on her feet as she ran. The wind of the after noon running through her hair perfectly as she kept on.
Layla felt her heart burn, her chest tighten but she couldn't stop, she just kept running. The beach came into view as she took off faster, bumping into a few people as she apologized to them but didn't bother to stop and help the couple she knocked down. The familiar brunette curls and backwards hat came into view, pouring a few drinks for people with the cheesy smile he always pulled.
"John B!" Layla called out, leaving her flip flops in the sand. The sound of her voice was angelic, the soft yet loud words leaving her lips. Layla was always soft spoken, her voice was one of those that comfort you immediately and could calm you down no matter the situation. His head snapped her way, a grin spreading across his face at the sight of the girl.
"Layla!" he grinned, dropping the cup as he stood, catching her as she jumped onto him.
"Hey." she said with a laugh as they stumbled slightly.
"How was church camp?" he asked with a laugh, dropping her down with a grin.
"You mean how was the subtle ways of telling me to like men instead of my ladies? Oh, the best. I did have a gorgeous roommate though." Layla pointed out as he laughed at her, shaking his head.
"Glad you're back, wasn't the same." he said while putting his hand on her shoulder with a grin, the moles on his face disappearing into his smile lines as he did so.
"I'd hope not." Layla said with a laugh as she turned to pour herself a drink.
"Better go find Kie, I think she's extremely over us." John B said as he knocked his solo cup with hers.
"Can't blame her, i'll make my way back over here soon." Layla said with a knowing look as she walked off. Layla looked around, giving a few people she went to school with a nod, searching for Kie.
"No way in hell." she heard the familiar voice as she turned and saw Pope and JJ frozen in spot.
"My babies!" Layla cheered, throwing a arm around them in a tight hug.
"Look who's back, lady killer." JJ said as he squeezed her.
"I thought they were gonna keep you the whole summer." Pope said as they pulled away from each other.
"Tell me about it, thank god dad said he needs my help around the church." Layla said as she grinned at the two.
"What are you drinking? Okay, no, no this will not work. After a month of being in captivity it is safe to say you need one of these." JJ said as he swiped his drink with hers.
"What is it?" Layla asked, smelling the strong liquid.
"You don't wanna know." Pope said with a shake of his head as JJ shoved him while nodding to Layla. She hesitated before tipping it backwards, the burn hitting her throat making her flinch and squint her face.
"My god, JJ." Layla said with a cough as the blonde laughed while Pope patted her back.
"Come on, we have a month of catching up." JJ said as he threw a arm around her, pulling Pope along.
Over time Layla met up with Kie, the five all catching up with her on what the city was like, the people she met. It was good to be back with them, all together in their habitat. The laughing about god knows what and smiling more then Layla had experience over the past month, the comforting feeling taking over her once again. That was until Kies face fell as she looked out in the distance.
"What is she doing here?" the girl glared, the group all followed her gaze as they landed on Sarah Cameron who jumped into her boyfriend, Topper Thornton's, arms. Layla and Sarah only spoke once and that was when Layla helped her load her groceries bags into the Rang Rover. She was picking up a few things for her moms funeral about two years ago, she only knew who the girl was through Kie, and it just so happened to be the same time Sarah dropped the many fruits she bought for a online smoothie she found.
The two didn't speak much, Layla dropping the fake flowers into her bike basket as she hurried over to grab the mangos that fell from the paper bag. Sarah smiled as she gave them back to her, thanking her as she helped load them into the basket. Layla ended up telling her about her moms funeral which Sarah said sorry to and Layla shook her head. They exchanged five sentences in total that day before going their separate ways. The two didn't talk after that aside from the instagram request and Sarah sending expensive flowers to the funeral home.
"Hey, just ignore it." Layla said to Kie as she watched her best friends mood change completely, bumping their solo cups with a wink.
Layla began to talk to a redhead girl she learned the name was Florence, the small talk exchanged between the two wasnice. The yells of a familiar voice made Layla sigh, apologizing to the beautiful girl as she walked toward the trio.
"Is there a problem?" Layla asked, crossing her arms as she saw JJ standing way to close to Topper as a worried Sarah stood behind him.
"Look, Layla had one, Layla, tell Sarah to take this drink." JJ said as he pulled the girl closer, holding up a drink.
"If she said she doesn't want it just walk away JJ, come on." Layla said a she made eye contact with Sarah, trying to shove JJ away as he shoved her off and began to encourage Sarah to take the drink again.
"You know what? I'll take it." Topper spoke up, moving a little forward as he reached for the drink.
"That's nice, but I didn't ask you. If you say pretty please, maybe." JJ said back, his tone too angry to be funny.
"I'll take the drink." Topper said as JJ sucked in his lips.
"I want Sarah to have it." JJ proceeded.
"JJ, she doesn't want it, lets just go." Layla said as she tried to get him to leave as Sarah gave her a look while JJ shoved the cup closer to her.
"She doesn't want it." Topper said quickly, slapping the drink out of JJs hands as it hit all of them. The two boys began to grab at each other as Sarah tried to back them up.
"Dirty Pogues!" Topper yelled over JJs smack talk. John B stepped forward and shoved Topper back harshly, Sarah once again trying to yell for them to stop.
"Knock it off!" Layla yelled at them, standing a few inches infront of Sarah.
"John B! We're suppose to be incognito, remember?" Pope asked as he hurried over..
"Babe, babe, babe-" Sarah began, seeing Topper pull his fist back, but her words did nothing, his fist hitting John B in the face as Layla gasped.
"Sarah! Get him!" Layla yelled, seeing Topper kicking John B into the water.
"I'm trying!" Sarah yelled back at her.
"John B! Don't make me drown you like your old man, all right?" Topper asked as he stared down at the boy in the water.
"What do we do?" Layla asked her, clearly not use to this type of behavior.
"Don't get in the middle of it." Sarah said to her over the yells of the crowd who were chanting 'Fight' over and over. John B suddenly stood up, running and tackling Topper down into the shore.
"Give it to him!" JJ yelled from were he stood.
"John B, lets go man!" Pope boy who ran over a few minutes ago yelled.
"Hey! Both of you stop it!" Layla yelled, clearly taking neither of the boys side in this situation.
"Topper, stop!" Sarah yelled at her boyfriend once again.
"That's what i'm talking about!" JJ cheered on his friend after the boy got a good swing at Topper.
"Stop! John B!" Kie yelled as she stepped forward. Layla grabbed her and pulled her backwards again. Layla ran a stressed hand through her hair as John B threw Topper into the water just as hard.
"Come on, Topper!" he yelled at him, edging him on even more.
"Holy shit, wait, wait no. No, Sarah control him!" Layla yelled as she saw Topper began to hold John B under the water.
"Topper! Topper, stop! No!" Sarah yelled at him, he was far from listening to her or anyone at this point.
"He's drowning him." Pope said from before said as he looked at Kie.
"Someone's gotta get in there." Layla said, knowing it was being taken way to far at this point.JJ suddenly hurried toward his bag. Layla didn't see it at first, he was to quick, she didn't gasp until she saw the hand gun in JJ's hand being held to Toppers head.
"Yeah, you know what that is. You're move, broski." JJ threatened as Layla looked to Pope and Kie who had a shocked look, Layla didn't realize she had a arm out infront of Sarah.
"JJ! JJ stop!" Sarah yelled as everyone began to run off, leaving the shore at the sight of the gun.
"JJ!" Pope yelled toward his friend, clearly not getting to his head though.
"Did you say something, princess?" JJ asked Sarah loudly as he pushed the gun more into Toppers head.
"We're good, we're good." Topper said in fear, clearly wanting to get out of the situation.
"Kie! Can you check your psycho friend, please?" Sarah yelled at Kie, her voice loud in Layla ear but she couldn't focus on that right now.
"Okay, everyone listen up, get the hell off our side of the island!" JJ yelled loudly, firing two shots into the air as people began to run off. Layla looked back at Sarah as she gave her a thank you look before she took off with Topper.
"Are you crazy! You idiot!" the taller boy yelled as he shoved JJ slightly, brave move.
"I'm saving his life, okay?" JJ yelled back at him.
"John B!" Layla yelled as she saw him pass out, hitting the water immediately.
