Chapter 16

After the most amazing shower ever, I go downstairs to see what food Shawn ordered. As I walk downstairs, I see Shawn turning on the television hanging above the fireplace.

I look at the light blue t-shirt I'm wearing and walk around the couch, sitting down next to Shawn. The Disney + sign appears on the big tv and I can't help but chuckle a little.

'What did you order?' I ask, resting my hand on his.

He entwines his fingers with mine and presses a kiss on the back of my hand.

'Pizza. The one with feta.' I open my mouth to ask something, but he cuts me off.

'Without olives, babe. I know you hate them.'

I smile and move closer to him, resting my head on his shoulder. It is the small things that can make you insanely happy.

Maybe it's also because it's about food, but let's just say it's the fact Shawn remembered I hate olives.

'Oh my, I almost forgot. I got you a birthday present.' I say, jumping to my feet.

'You shouldn't have. Today was the best day I had in a long time. Having you here with me is already a present.' Shawn says.

'Yeah, yeah, yeah.' I say, walking around his living room. 'Where is it?'

Just when I start to freak out, I see my purse laying on the ground in the corner of the living room.

I grab the box out of it with a sigh and walk to Shawn, sitting down next to him. He inspects the box and I give it to him with a big smile on my face.

'Open it!'

Shawn tears the paper off it and when he sees the Rolex logo he freezes for a moment. He stares at me with big eyes.

'No, you didn't.' He hasn't even opened the box yet.

'Open the box, Mendes.' I say, rolling my eyes.

He opens the box and looks at the golden and blue watch in front of him. Before I can say anything he wraps his arms around me, pulling me to his body and pressing his lips on mine.

When I pull away, I see a big smile on his face. I'm glad he likes it.

'You could've bought a car with the price of this watch.'

'I know, but I didn't because we both already have a car. Look at it.' I point at it.

'No, I can't accept this. You have to return it. It's way too much after everything you've been through.'

We argue for a moment and after a few minutes, Shawn finally takes the watch out of the box, looking at the engraved letters on the back.

'For the love of my life, x Beth.' Shawn reads out loud.

He thanks me one million times before putting the watch around his wrist. I kiss him and complain about the fact we're still not watching a movie.

He wraps his arm around me and rests his hand on my hip, holding me close to his body. I press a kiss on his soft lips before he starts the movie Cars.

A big smile appears on my face. I love that movie.

Shawn drops me off at work early in the morning. He kisses me in my neck and looks at me for a moment. I press one last kiss on his lips and open the door of his car.

'Should I pick you up after work?'

'No, no, I can walk home from here.' I respond.

He looks at me with sleepy eyes. I feel guilty for waking him up this early, but I had no idea how to return to The Hague without stealing his car. When I asked him if I could just borrow it, he insisted on driving me.

'Thanks, Mendes. I'll-- I'll see you tomorrow?' I ask.

'Yeah, sure. Let me know where and what time.'

I nod my head and climb out of his car. Shawn's hand lands on my ass and I yelp, looking straight into the doorman's eyes. Oh my god.

'Shawn!' I say with a high pitched voice, turning around to look at him.

I bite my lip and try not to laugh.

'Have fun at work, Beth.' He winks, starting the engine.

I close the door and shake my head a little, smiling.

The doorman greets me and I give him an awkward smile, rushing to the elevator to bring me to my office.

The day passes by in peace, but it couldn't have stayed that way to the end of course. Just when I open the file of the trial I have tomorrow, Lucifer runs into my office.

'I told you he would find out. Just please--' Why is he panicking?

My dad walks through the door of my office behind Lucifer. He has his angry - really angry - face on.

Oh fuck, what did I do now?

Lucifer sits down on one of the chairs in front of my desk, trying to tell me something with his eyes.

'Elizabeth McCullen!' My dad's voice echoes through my office.

I jump to my feet quickly walking to him.

'Dad! Hey, I've missed you.' I say with a big smile.

I wrap my arms around him and he only taps my shoulder twice. Oh, he's really angry.

I close the door of my office and look if some of my colleagues might have heard him.

'Don't try to change the subject.' My dad says, sitting down next to Lucifer.

'What's the subject?' I ask, sitting down behind my desk again.

What could the subject be? Shawn? No, he already got angry about that before. Maybe he found out what happened between Shawn and me? No, no, that can't be it.

Oh fuck, what if he found out about Shawn's "other" world?

I look at Lucifer who's nervously rubbing his temples. He is such a shitty brother, he could've called me on their way here.

'The board contacted me, Liz. The board!' My dad shouts.

'What did I do?' I ask.

Ok, now I'm really confused.

'When you chose to become an attorney, I told you, you may have to make some hard choices. "Yes, dad." "I know, dad." you said. I guess you don't!'

Huh?

I look at him with a dumb expression, I have no idea what this is about.

'Close your mouth! Are you trying to catch flies?'

'No, dad.' I close my mouth and look down at my lap.

'When you have to defend someone, they may or may not be guilty of the crime they're being charged for. It's not your job to decide if they end up behind bars or not!' My dad continues shouting.

Now I know what this is about. Every time I think someone is guilty of murdering someone and is a dick about it to me, I just decide to lose the case. They can rot in prison for all I care.

I know it's not a good thing to do, but I only did it two or three times when Bakker and I were sure of it.

'But dad, that's not--'

'Bub, bub, bub. No!' He interrupts me.

I see a disappointed look in his eyes.

'A former employee of our firm - who you fired by the way - filed a complaint about your actions at the board.'

Oh, I swear to god, one day I'm going to kill Bakker. He just doesn't seem to fucking disappear out of my life.

We have been working closely for three years, he knew my tactics, especially when I had to defend a murderer and now he's using it against me? Really?!

'Is that why you fired him? To cover up your tracks?' He asks.

'No! He was constantly stalking me and making our lives a living hell!' I raise my voice. Terrible mistake.

'So what?! You can't just put clients away because you don't trust them!'

'They were going to prison anyway!' I shout back.

My dad inhales sharply.

'You could've given them a reduced sentence!'

'I didn't want to!'

He stands up and starts pacing back and forth in my big office.

'Ok, I respect your honesty, but it's your job. I don't want dickheads filing complaints about my daughter. Plus, your personal life has nothing to do with work. Stalking or not, you should've just gone to the police. What does stalking you have to do with him working at our firm?' My dad asks.

'I hear you, dad, but he fucking tried to rape me! Is that a good enough reason to keep him away from our firm?!' I blurt out.

He didn't know about what happened. Just when Lucifer was about to tell him what happened that day, I called him to ask him if he could please not tell him the truth.

He told him some bullshit story about how I got into a fight with some random person on the streets.

The worst part about it is that my dad believed him immediately. Well, I can't really blame him for doing so, you know, with my past and all.

'I didn't know that.' My dad says, not really sure what to do.

'I know.' I look away. 'I didn't want to tell you.'

He walks up to me and wraps his arms around me, holding me really tight. I almost can't breathe.

'I'm sorry that happened to you.' His voice breaks.

I stand up from my chair and wrap my arms around my dad's shoulders. I hope he's not crying because then I'm going to cry too.

'Did you go to the police?' He asks.

'No. He ended up in the hospital, so it only would've caused me problems. What I did was beyond self-defence.' I say.

'Good. I'm proud of you.'

This is the first time my dad is proud of me after I hit a person. I get it, I would be proud too.

My dad asks me one last question before he leaves.

'It won't happen again.' I assure him.

He nods and presses a kiss on my forehead, grabbing Lucifer's arm and dragging him away from my office.

'I don't know why you insisted on coming with me.' I hear my dad say to him before closing the door.

I chuckle and sit down, exhaling sharply. My phone buzzes and when I look at who it is, I see Shawn sent me a picture of his watch with a heart drawn around it. I chuckle and put my phone away, taking notes for my next trial.
