Chapter 46
I cannot believe that Klaus is standing in my living room right now. I thought I would never have to see him after that day. We vowed that we would never speak of it and never tell Lucifer.
Never.
And here he is, with a big smile on his face and a glimpse of recognition in his eyes.
I shoot up from the couch and wrap my arms around Lucifer, trying to hide my nervousness by acting like I've missed him.
'I missed you, bro.' I say while holding Lucifer.
'I missed you too...' He frowns when he looks into my eyes again.
I never say "bro".
'And you are?' I stick my hand out to Klaus.
'I'm Niklaus, nice to meet you. You can call me Nik or some people call me Klaus.' He winks.
I am the only one who called him Klaus because he reminded me of Niklaus Mikaelson from The Originals. The always angry, tormented, hot guy with a soft heart.
I thought he was hot because he was always so mean to other people. He was also mean to me, but I kind of liked that back then.
Ugh, why did he have to come over today? The first time after a long time I visit this house and he shows up with Lucifer. I'm here with my boyfriend acting like I have never met Klaus before.
'My name is Elizabeth.' I sit down next to Shawn again.
My leg starts to move up and down nervously and Shawn puts his hand on my thigh to stop me.
'Don't you guys know each other?' Lucifer says. 'Nik and I used to do a lot of gaming together back in Scotland.'
'Oh yeah, I already thought you looked familiar.' I lie.
Shawn stands up and shakes Klaus' hand with a creepy big smile.
'My name is Shawn, I'm Beth's boyfriend.' He says.
I bite on the inside of my cheek. I hate my life. I hate it when Lucifer's friends fly over from Scotland to spend some time with him. And I hate it even more if his friends and I have a past together.
'Boyfriend huh.' Klaus looks at me. 'I thought Elizabeth didn't have boyfriends.' He gives me a fake smile, pronouncing the word "boyfriends" as if it's a dirty word.
'Or well, that's what she was known for back in the day... among other things.'
Nobody responds to that comment and it is silent in the living room until Sheila breaks the silence.
Adriana cleans up her gaming stuff and we all sit around the big dining table. The dinner is awkward. Everyone keeps their mouth shut during the meal. Shawn and Sheila try to break the silence a couple of times, but they end up talking to each other, making it even more awkward for the rest.
'How was your vacation?' Adriana asks me and Shawn.
'It was great.' I say a little too loud.
'Where did you guys go?' Klaus asks.
'I took her on a road trip to Morocco and back. We stopped in Paris and Madrid along the way.' Shawn answers.
'Boyfriends, vacations... what else changed about you?' Klaus looks at me.
Why does he do this to me? I want to hide. I want to hide and I want to cry.
Fuck.
He looks into my eyes with the fork in his hand. If only I could use that fork to shut him up.
I feel Shawn's eyes burn on the side of my face and when I turn to look into his eyes it feels like he reads my soul. A glimpse of understanding appears in his eyes and he clenches his jaw...
He knows.
'Excuse me for a moment.' Shawn says before standing up.
I stand up and roll my eyes at Lucifer before following Shawn into the hallway. My dad mumbles something under his breath when Sheila also stands up and walks to the kitchen.
'Where are you going?' I whisper when Shawn opens the front door.
Shawn turns around to look at me when he steps outside the door and he runs his fingers through his hair, resting both his hands on his head.
'Listen.' He inhales sharply. 'Having a past is one thing... but your past showing up in front of my face is a whole different story!' He raises his voice.
'Don't raise your voice at me!' I still whisper.
'Everyone can hear you!'
'I'm leaving.' Shawn says, turning around and walking away from me.
'What?! Why?' I close the front door behind me and follow him.
'I can't stay here with you and him in the same room without choking the shit out of him.' I see that Shawn tries to stay calm.
'I swear to god, I didn't know Lucifer would bring him here today.' I reach out for Shawn's arm, but he moves his body away from me.
'I'm leaving, you're welcome to join me... or you can stay here with him...' He points at the house.
'What happened between me and him was years ago! We were children, Shawn! Everything is different now.'
'You may think that, but the way he talks to you makes it look like he doesn't feel the same way as you do.' Shawn opens the door of his car.
'Last chance.' He says before stepping inside.
'I'm not coming with you and it's not because of Klaus... the rest of my family is inside and I missed them. I'm spending the rest of the evening with them.'
'Klaus... When he said some people call him Klaus, I just knew it was you...' Shawn smashes the door closed and starts the engine.
I watch him drive away and I slowly sit down on the small bricks next to the front door. I sigh and close my eyes. Why did it have to go like this? Why can't anything just go the way I want it to?
I decide to go back inside after ten minutes. I'm going to finish dinner and call a cab to drive me back home. When I sit down at the dinner table again I tell a lousy lie about why Shawn had to leave so abruptly.
After everyone is done eating, I help Sheila and Lucifer clean the table and do the dishes. Lucifer walks off when everything is almost done.
'What is the real reason Shawn left?' Sheila asks when I hand her a couple of clean glasses.
I look into her eyes. Should I tell her? She raises one eyebrow and deep down I really want to talk about it with someone who doesn't know my past.
'Because of Klaus.' I look at him leaving the room.
'What happened between you two?' Sheila asks again.
'Did you fight him when you were younger?'
'No, I wish that was the reason.' I sigh. 'I had an... intimate relationship with Klaus when we were younger.'
'You slept with him?' Sheila frowns.
'No... you know what... never mind. It's weird to talk about it.'
'I think I understand.' She gives me a soft smile. 'It's ok... just know that you can always talk to me.'
I hug her and thank her for the talk before saying goodbye to everyone.
I call a cab and ten minutes later it arrives. I stare out of the window on the backseat thinking about everything that happened the last few hours.
Between me and Adriana everything got better and that same hour Shawn decided to leave. Can I blame him? No. I don't know what I would've done. But it's not right to leave every time it gets a little harder.
Shawn's POV
I was convinced she was a virgin the first time I met her. She seemed so innocent. So pure. And here I am, standing in my living room, looking at the tourists shopping in Amsterdam, I couldn't have been more wrong.
This wasn't how I planned it to go, it was supposed to be a lot less hard. Meeting her family for the second time was supposed to be easy. I just had to be nice to them and smile so they would like me, I guess I ruined that too.
Was it wrong to leave Beth there?
'Hello? Who is this?' My mother says when she picks up the phone.
'Hi mom, it's me, Shawn. This is my new phone number. Can I talk to dad?'
