1.4 | Caleb's Crash

CALEB WAS DRIVING down the highway with the days newspaper sitting in his passenger seat, the headline saying 'Student Found Dead of Overdose' which had alerted Caleb to the fact that something was happening. He called Pogue, holding his phone to his ear as he sped down the highway, the two greeting each other and discussing the body that was found. "What makes you think it was Reid?" Pogue asked unsure, he was currently at the garage getting his motorbike fixed.
"It's always him," Caleb answered with a irritated sigh, "But I've never felt it when one of us has used The Power. Have you?" Pogue sighed knowing that Caleb wouldn't drop it and could only hope that Reid didn't piss him off. "No. I don't know, maybe it's because you're so close to ascending," Pogue suggested with a frown. "I don't know. Maybe. I'm telling you, it was strong enough to wake me out of a dead sleep," Caleb explained to Pogue trying to get his point across, they needed to take this seriously; the consequences weren't worth it.
"You know he's only using his powers to piss you off 'cause he's jealous you're ascending first, man," Pogue reminded his best friend, it was true that Reid was jealous of the fact that Caleb was Ascending first which automatically put his as the leader of the Covenant; his rules had to be followed. And of course, Reid hated it because he loved The Power, not just because of its seductive weight but simply because it entertained him greatly. But even with Caleb's rules, the Book of Damnation's law stated that The Power was to be used with caution; to prevent the consequences and reveal.
"I'm telling you, just─" Caleb is cut off as he looks over to the passenger seat to see the dead student looking back at him, the sight of it freaks him out greatly as the face seemed to morph into that of the screaming man painting before fading into mist. "Caleb?" Pogue called through the phone that had been dropped to the floor in his moment of fear. Caleb, distracted by the apparition of the dead student, realises too late that he had drifted into the other lane, and crashes head-on into a semi-truck.
He felt his Power push out for his twin naturally, the two interlinked and as time seemed to slow down, the car impacted into the truck exploding it apart. The pieces of the car seemed to float around the truck, as the large vehicle passed leaving a space on the road, Caleb's car reformed with Caleb alive and unharmed in the driver's side seat─ The car screeching to a halt as the truck continued down the highway. Caleb takes a moment to breath, his mind reeling by what had just happened.
"What's going on, Caleb? Pick up, Caleb, pick up the phone, man, Caleb... what's going on!?" Pogue questioned panicked through the phone, like Reid and possibly Tyler, they would have felt the twins Power reaching out to each other to form something stronger. "I just saw a Darkling," Caleb told Pogue once he had his phone back, "It was in the form of that dead kid they found at the Dells." Caleb frowned, seeing a Darkling was never a good sign. They were omens only seen by ones who wielded The Power or lived within the world the Heirs did.
They couldn't always be trusted, sometimes they took the shape and soul of an actual dead soul sending a message or warning. Other times, they were manipulated spirits or demons sent by something dark that you would not wish to face. Thankfully, the Heirs have yet to face any threats like that and nor had their fathers. They had plenty of stories from grandparents about these beings, about not trusting them no matter what or who summoned them.
"Yeah, I saw his picture this morning in the newspaper. But who'd send you a Darkling?" Pogue questioned, none of the Heirs would which meant someone out there was wielding something magical in their veins. "I have no idea. Something's wrong, I can feel it," Caleb told him, he took in a calming breath; Or at least tried too. "Look, we gotta talk to Reid tonight. He'll be a Nicky's, we'll see him then," Pogue reassured him though he was sure Reid wouldn't screw around like this, no risking his future with Andromeda. "Definitely," Caleb said before hanging up and driving off.

ANDROMEDA GASPING AWAKE from where she lay against Reid's chest, her eyes flashing orange before filling with an inky black as she pushed her power through the tug of her twin. She waited in a frozen moment before feeling the pull of her twin, easing her as she let her eyes fade back to their normal blue. "You okay, doll?" Reid asked, he had been watching her cautiously knowing she was linked with her twin; he wouldn't touch her out of risk of breaking it if needed. "Uh, yeah..." Andromeda replied as she moved back into Reid's embrace.
"Is Caleb okay?" Reid asked as he brushed his fingers through Andromeda's hair, he was loving every second of this. "Yeah, he's okay... but he seems irriated about something," Andromeda frowned deeply, she furrowed her brows trying to understand what had Caleb set off. "It could be a number of things, doll, don't waste time trying to figure it out," Reid told her as he moved them around, she was on her back and he was resting his head against her stomach. Andromeda smiled, she hadn't envisioned Reid to be such a cuddly person but she didn't mind; pushing her fingers through his hair as she relaxed again, Reid humming in approval of the action.

DRESSED IN JEANS and a random band shirt, Andromeda had been dragged from her dorm by Kate and Sarah; Reid had left a little earlier to get ready for the day. The trio of girls were accompanied by Chase to do shopping, the store was almost thirty minutes away from Spenser Academy so they tried to limit the trips during school term. It was obvious that Chase was staying close to Andromeda but the girl couldn't stop thinking about the last hour she had spent cuddling with a certain Garwin Heir that happened to spark a new feeling in her chest she only felt when reading a romance novel.
"Boo!" Chase teased, pink sunglasses on his face but Andromeda was too focused on deciding which chips she was feeling. Caleb stood at the Pharmacist counter in the back of the store, paying for the medication he had to pick up. As he turned to walk towards the door, he was stopped by the sight of Chase talking to Andromeda; he felt uneasy about the two─ moreso, uneasy about Chase Collins. "Hey, Caleb," Kate greeted as she spotted the teenager her new friend held an interest in. "Oh, hey, Kate. What are you up to?" Caleb asked her.
"Oh, I'm just stocking up our room," Kate answered before frowning, "Did you hear about the dead kid?" Caleb tensed as the flash of the Darkling hit him at the mention of the dead teenager. "Yeah. Yeah I did," Caleb told her, sorrow flooding his eyes at the unfortunate loss. "Did you know him?" Kate asked with concern, she hoped he didn't. "No. No, he just transferred in," Caleb answered with all he knew. "Yeah, I heard he lived on Reid and Tyler's floor," Kate stated with a sad expression, it was always sad to see a loss so young no matter the cause of it.
"Hi," Sarah greeted as she stepped up next to Kate, her eyes locked on Caleb like he was the only person in the room. "Hi there," Caleb replied, his own gaze entranced by the beautiful blonde; he couldn't understand what pulled him in so much but he was willing to accept it. "Boo!" Chase once again jumped out to startle someone after failing with Andromeda, her mind too distracted. "You scared me!" Sarah exclaimed, her hand against her chest as she playfully glared up at Chase who was grinning at his success of making her jump.
"Hey, man," Chase greeted Caleb, the two shaking hands as they did when they first introduced themselves. "Hey," Caleb replied as Andromeda skipped her way over and jumped up onto Caleb's back. "Geez, Andy," Caleb coughed from the sudden impact, readjusting so his sister wouldn't fall and hurt herself. "I'm gonna see if Pogue wants to catch that new Brad Pitt flick this afternoon. Who else wants to go?" Kate asked the group, an easy smile on her face. "I'll go," Andromeda said, "As long as we go to Nicky's after." Kate nodded accepting her request. "I will," Chase accepted.
"I gotta run some errands for our mother," Caleb told them motioning at Andromeda who frowned slightly, she was her mother's greatest pride and greatest disappointment half of the time. "I already saw it," Sarah remarked in reference to the movie, she sent a subtle look towards Caleb bringing a smile to Andromeda's face. The younger Danvers dropped from Caleb's back and moved to stand with Kate, "Why don't you accompany Caleb then, Sarah?" Caleb looked at his sister as she spoke, she sent him an encouraging wink. "So?" Caleb asked her. "Sure," Sarah agreed.
"Bye Cal. Say hi to Gormin for me!" Andromeda called out before she grabbed her last few things and paid for it, taking it out to the car as Kate and Chase finished up their own shopping. From their, they returned to the dorms to put everything away in their respective dorms. As Andromeda left her dorm, she grabbed Reid's jacket and pulled it on, locking her door before heading down the hall until she reached the main doors where she met up with Kate and Chase; the trio heading to the movies for this new film.

CALEB AND SARAH were heading down the main highway of Ipswich in Caleb's car, the trees flying by as they drove; the convertible roof down letting the air flow over them. "I wish I'd bought my camera. This place is so beautiful," Sarah spoke breaking the silence they had been in, she let herself relax in the passenger seat. Caleb smiled at her words, "Andy has a camera she rarely uses anymore. Maybe you could spark her passion back." Sarah grinned, "It'd be nice to have a photographer friend. I'll happily do so." Caleb chuckled, he hoped so as he missed the way his sister passionately spoke about photography; having given up on it when her mother berated her for a bad career choice.
"What's that place?" Sarah asked intrigued by the standing barn, the place looked run down and charred in colour. "That's the old Putnam barn. Or what's left of it. The whole place, for miles around, was the original Ipswich Colony," Caleb answered her, the history lessons taught by the twins' father were engrained deep into his mind. "So, what brought you to Spenser?" Caleb added not wishing to delve too deep into the Heirs history but rather learning more about the beautiful blonde next to him. "A scholarship," Sarah answered him, slight unease in her tone knowing how most responded to having a scholarship.
"But why Spenser?" Caleb asked intrigued by that. "I want to go to Harvard," Sarah told him, he felt a warmth at the fact that should something more happen between them, they wouldn't have to worry about distance as they both wanted to go to Harvard. "My father was class of '81," Caleb informed her, a small smile on his face. "That's so cool," Sarah complimented before frowning slightly, "Uh, Kate told me he passed away." Caleb tensed for a moment before brushing the topic aside by saying, "You and Kate talk about me?" Sarah rolled her eyes playfully, "Well, you know, just girl stuff." Caleb chuckled as they pulled up to a creepy, worn house.
"It's our family's first colony house," Caleb informed her at her curious look of the old home that was still standing. "Wait. Somebody lives here?" Sarah asked stunned, she guessed the inside of the house was nicer than the outside. "Just our caretaker," Caleb answered as he moved to get out of the car, a gunshot went off from the door causing the two teens to lower themselves down. "Gorman, it's me!" Caleb shouted out, Gorman easing at the knowledge. "He doesn't see that well anymore," Caleb said directed to the girl still sitting in the car. "You think?" Sarah teased, slightly scared.
"Who's with you?" Gorman called from the house, his role as a protector taking charge. "Just a friend!" Caleb called back before looking at Sarah, "I'll be right back, okay?" Sarah nodded and watched as Caleb headed into the home leaving her alone in the slightly creepy environment. Inside, Gorman peeked out the window looking at Sarah as he spoke, "Caleb? You should be more careful." Caleb sat the medicine on the table, "I know, Gorman. Is there anything else he needs?"
He didn't want to stay longer than he needed too, he was the only one who actually walked into this home unless it Covenant based meetings. "No," Gorman told him, "How is Andromeda holding up? He has been hoping for her to visit." Caleb turned his back to Gorman, his fist clenching tight, "She wishes you well. But I won't let her near him, not after what he tried to do." Gorman lowered his head in respect, leaving the request at that. "I'll see you next week then," Caleb said before making his way out of the house to rejoin Sarah in the car.
"You okay?" Caleb asked the girl. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay," Sarah told him with a smile on her face as Caleb started the car. "So you wanna shower or change first?" Caleb asked Sarah who was confused as she asked, "For what?" Caleb grinned at her, "We're going to Nicky's." Sarah recalled Andromeda mentioning the name but she hadn't been told what it was, "What's Nicky's?" Caleb simply smirked her way before whipping his car around and speeding off down the highway in the direction of Nicky's for some fun before classes tomorrow.
