chapter 6 - Quirk Apprehension Tests

I dozed off for a minute while listening to my music and felt a tap on my shoulder. I jolted awake and saw Sero standing by my desk. "You dozed off. The teacher asked us to put these on." He says handing me a blue and white gym uniform. "Oh, thanks," I say grabbing the uniform. I got up and followed the other girls to the changing rooms. I opened an empty locker and slipped my arms out of my uniform jacket. I hang the jacket inside the locker and untie my tie. I take off the rest of my clothes and slip my legs through the gym uniform pants. I put a white shirt on before zipping the blue and white gym jacket up.

I grab my tenny shoes and sit on a bench to put them on. I slip one on and tie the lace into a bow. I put on the other shoes but while trying to tie the lace it snaps. "Shoot!" I say aloud. "Here, I have an extra!" The same girl with black hair I noticed earlier says. She hands me a black shoelace with a small smile. "Oh, thanks," I say taking the lace from her. I remove the old lace and start looping the new one through the holes. "I think we sit in the same row in class. I'm Momo Yaoyorozu!" The girl says. "Nozomi Hitomi..." I say tying my shoelace.

"Like the Steel heroes?" She asks. "Yes..." I say quietly. I grab a hair tie from my bag inside my locker and shut the locker. I walk to a sink and look in the mirror. I looked paler than usual and I could see dark circles under my eyes starting to develop. I lifted my shirt up a little and turned to the side looking at my skinny physique. I sighed as I let go of my shirt and fixed it so it was neat. I held the hair tie in my mouth while I gathered my long hair up into a messy bun. I held the hair with one hand and grabbed the tie with the other. I looped the tie around my hair a couple of times to secure it.

I walked out of the changing rooms and to the field where most everyone was. There were still a couple of the girls in the changing rooms but I was pretty sure all the boys were out here. There were only two other girls. One was a girl with short brown hair and matching brown eyes and the other girl had short messy pink hair with two yellow horns atop her head and strange all pink skin. Her irises were yellow but her sclera was pitch-black. I saw Kaminari and Sero standing with each other talking like most of the others were doing while waiting and walked over to join them.

"Hey, Nozomi!" Sero says. "Hey." I say returning the 'Hey'. "Has anyone ever told you your eyes look like ice?" Kaminari asks. "Yes, many actually," I respond. "Never noticed. But they really do! They make you look more likable." Sero says complimenting me. My cheeks turned pink and I gave him a small smile in return. "Thanks," I say quietly. To be honest no one has really complimented me other than my friends when we first became friends. It felt nice to have someone be so kind to me and compliment me like that. The rest of the class joined us after a couple of minutes.

Our teacher, Mr. Aizawa, explains what we will be doing. We were doing some basic quirk apprehension tests that would be compared to what our scores were in junior high. When it comes to things like running, jumping, and things that use agility I'm pretty good thanks to my ice skating. But when it's something like throwing a ball? Not so much. I can throw it just not that far and there's no exact way for me to use my quirk to throw it farther. The tests were basics like a race to test our speed, throwing a softball, and other tests like pushups and situps which I wasn't too bad at either. I had average upper-body strength and could do 50 pushups and situps during junior high.

I was first and could do it the quickest in my class. While we were taking these tests the other classes were having orientation. I don't need to worry about that right now though I need to focus on the tests and not getting last...last would be expelled. First was a 50-yard dash, I was against Yaoyorozu. Three other teams went before us and it was our turn now. I crouched to the ground placing my feet on the metal foot tracks and my hands on the ground. I looked forward as I waited for the buzzer to signal us to go.

"GO!" The robotic voice said.

I ran off and used my quirk to sprout vines to pull myself closer to the finish while having my speed. I made it just before Yaoyorozu and slid across the line falling to the ground. Ouch! I say to myself. "Need a hand?" Yaoyorozu asks. "Yeah, thanks," I say grabbing her hand and helping myself up. "What you did, with those vines, was really cool. and really smart aswell." She says complimenting me. "Thanks," I say. She didn't use her quirk so I was still confused as to what Yaoyorozu's quirk was. "What's it called? Your quirk that is..." She asks. "Hanahaki." I sigh.

"Like the fictional love disease?" She asks. "Yes, I can sprout vines and flowers inside myself, others, and the ground. The color and flower depend on my mood mainly. If I were enraged and angry the flower would be a Petunia and the color would be red." I say. "If you were sad or upset it would be a Hyacinth and the color would be blue," Yaoyorozu says. "Yes, you know a lot about flowers don't you?" I ask. "My mother likes exotic flowers and has a bunch of different types in our greenhouse," Yaoyorozu says. "she also has many books about different flowers and their meanings so I know a lot about those too." She adds.

We continued with the tests before it came time for our last one the softball throw. Jeez, I wasn't happy about this. A boy with ash blonde hair, ruby-red eyes, and an explosion quirk got over 700 meters. I walked up and stretched out my arms. I learned something new I can do with my quirk that would be perfect for this. I held the ball in my hand and took a deep breath in. I threw the ball far and got 704.5 meters. I looked down at my arms to see small Gladiolus flowers all over my arms. It was a new super move I was working on. Where I use the energy of a flower to boost my power. Gladiolus flowers mean strength so they helped me throw the ball farther than I thought I would.

I rubbed the flowers off my arms as if they were just sitting on my arms even though they were attached to my skin and it hurt a bit rubbing them off but I'm fine. The name for my new basic move would be called Flower Summon. Everyone had gone and it was now time for the scores. Mr. Aizawa pulls up our scores and I look for my name on the board. I was in tenth which was a good thing meaning I wouldn't get expelled. But a boy named Izuku Midoriya wouldn't be so lucky. He had gotten last which meant he had to leave. "Oh, and no one's being expelled." Mr. Aizawa says. That's not funny to say to some kids. I say to myself. I walk to the changing rooms and put my normal uniform back on.

I left my jacket hanging in my locker and grabbed my bag before shutting the door. I removed my hair from its bun and shoved the tie into my pocket. I rubbed my hands up and down my arms trying to ignore the scars on my arms but I couldn't not think they weren't there. I was trained to use flowers with sharp thorns like roses by my parents at a young age. I would sprout them on my arms and moving the wrong way would result in small cuts on my arms. Now they're just a reminder of my past and what being trained by hero parents for me was like. Spoiler alert! Not fun. I say rolling my eyes in my head.
