Trees with their crooked branches blocked the light from the moon and stars making the headlights on the truck spreading ahead of them the only light.
Anticipation grew in the pit of their stomachs as the redhead put the 2004 dodge truck in park, shutting the engine off as she took in a deep breath. She began to wonder if this was the right thing. To put it simply, she didn't fully believe in the supernatural unlike her friend who had her suspicions and yet, she still felt as if a dark presence was surrounding them. But there was no backing out. Not when they've come this far.
"I've heard there are bears living in that mine." Said the soft voice of Patsy Preston as she looked over briefly at her life long friend.
"Which type of bears? Bares or Bears? Nudists or six-inch clawed big trash pandas?" The brunette said with a mischievous side grin as she opened the passenger door, her White Swiss Shepherd jumping down from the bed of the truck to stand by Patsy's side before trotting off to inspect the area
The ginger couldn't keep back the smile that was breaking though, shaking her head as her friend helped take a little of the edge off.
The moon cast shadows on their faces as they advanced towards the old abandoned mine. Switching on their flashlights, they scanned the entrance that looked weak from years of being abandoned with boards that seemed to be tightly nailed to keep those that were brave enough from venturing in.
"We should have just let the boys come with us." Patsy said after they began their journey down the mine, kicking a pebble and watching it disappear under a pile of loose dirt. The ginger really didn't have a good feeling about this. Even though she knew her friend was obsessed with finding out the truth, she couldn't help but feel like this was out of their league and above their expertise.
"You really want to hear Dean's God-awful rendition of Wheel In The Sky again? I think not." Clara had scrunched up her nose at the thought, really just making an excuse because deep down, she knew they should've brought the Winchester brothers along too. But there was no turning back now.
As they walked deeper into the mine, Patsy clutched her denim jacket closer as temperature continued to drop, silently wishing she would've brought something warmer.
The rusted out steel railing split into two different directions, Clara peering down both ways before turning to face her companion. "We should split up. Cover more ground that way."
Patsy furrowed her eyebrows as her gaze snapped to look at Clara, staring at her as if she'd grown two heads. "Split up? Are you serious? In an old mine shaft that's supposedly haunted?"
"First of all, there's no supposedly. It is haunted and secondly, we don't have time to chitchat. Just go. You'll be fine without me holding your hand for two fluffing seconds." Clara pointed out as she raised her eyebrows in a knowing way.
A small scoff would come from Patsy as she looked away, not wanting to appear that she was all that scared. Placing a hand on her hip, she looked down the tunnel she was supposed to go down, raising her other hand to rub her face. "I hate you for this."
Clara just shrugged as she watched her dog stand next to her friend. "Well, at least you'll have Kelpie with you. If anything happens just send him for me and we'll get the hell outta dodge."
Patsy took a moment to gather her courage as she watched her friend fade for a moment, taking in a deep breath before going down a different tunnel with the white Swiss Shepherd leading the way.
Patsy could see her breath in the faint flashlight, shrugging it off as she followed the other set of tracks, a sudden shiver going through her body as she realized a more drastic change in temperature. As the tunnel she was in opened to a larger room, she scanned it with her flashlight before hearing a voice echoing softly.
Uncertainty began to set in as her heart rate accelerated, suddenly feeling as if someone was behind her. "Clara?" She said with her voice barely above a whisper as the dog gave a low growl. Patsy whipped around and took a step back, a horrified gasp escaping her lips when she saw a ghostly pale man behind her. She didn't have very long to study the face before it spoke, the voice sending a chill down her spine.
"Run. He's coming." The ghost said in a raspy tone, pointing towards the area she just walked through.
Everything felt numb as Patsy watched the man disappear in a flash as if he was never there. At first she couldn't move. Blinking rapidly as her head was spinning, having to reach out to lean against an old wooden beam for support, not wanting to believe any of this was true. Kelpie started to whine, pawing at Patsy's leg trying to bring her out of her daze.
Only seconds after the ghost disappeared she felt a gust of wind come through, blowing her hair in her face as a voice once again told her to run more urgently.
This time, she wasn't going to wait around to see if he would show up again. Gripping her flashlight tightly, Patsy took off running through the dark and dusty mine, trying to block out the voices that echoed in the mine with every step she took before she stopped to look behind her.
"Kelpie! Go find Clara!!" She ordered before the dog gave a sharp bark and then bolted ahead to go find his master.
The ghost showed up again, directly in front of her which prevented her from following through her plan to follow the dog to get Clara. "You must leave!" The ghost would say desperately, the tunnel shaking slightly from the paranormal activity. She was almost out of the mine before she tripped over something, her hand planting into something warm and moist. With shaky breaths she raised her arm to see something in the faint light she wished she could ignore.
Blood.
A scream left her mouth without her even thinking about it, a wave of nausea passing through her system as she became worried for her friend. A sick feeling washed over her as she tried to stand back on her feet only to fall back to her knees.
Where was Clara?
