"Here is detectives," the coroner said, pulling the body drawer out to reveal a young male with cuts all along his chest, arms and hands that had been stitched up and a large bite was on the side of his neck.
Delaney grimaced at the sight of how battered and bruised the poor man looked. "That's a pretty nasty bite. Do you have any idea what bit him?"
"I haven't quite determined that just yet," the coroner replied.
"Come on, doc. Off the record," Sam pleaded, his eyes drifting from the body to the coroner.
"Okay, way, way off the record. If I didn't know better, I'd say the guy was attacked by a wolf. Unless I know that the zoo is missing one of their lobos, I'm with pit bull. I like my job."
Delaney giggled and nodded her head, understanding where the woman was coming from. "Yeah, totally understand. I just have one more thing. This guy - was his heart missing?"
"Yeah, how did you know that? I haven't even finished my report."
"Lucky guess."
-°—✞——✞—°-
"This lawyer guy the first heart-free corpse in town?" Dean asked, cleaning off the guns he brought into the motel room with them the night before.
Sam and Delaney had gotten back to the room a few minutes ago and explained everything they found out from the coroner. The fact the heart was missing and there was what looked like a werewolf bite on the man's neck, Delaney was pretty sure it was in fact a werewolf.
"No, first man," Delaney corrected and accepted the bottle of water Sam handed to her from the motel room's fridge. "Over the past year, several woman have gone missing. Dead bodies all washed up later in the bay, too deteriorated to draw firm conclusions."
"But no hearts," Dean concluded as his siblings pulled chairs up to where he sat on the bed.
"No hearts," Sam confirmed. "They were all hookers working at Hunter's Point. Cops are trying to keep things under wrap, but they're looking for a serial killer."
"And the lunar cycle?"
Delaney nodded and pulled her feet up underneath her on the chair. "Mmm-hmm. Month after month, all the murders happened in the week leading up to the full moon."
"Which is this week," Dean noted and grinned, tossing the gun he just finished cleaning onto the bed next to him. "Awesome!"
Sam scoffed softly and shook his head at his brother. "Dean, could you be a bigger geek about this?"
"I'm sorry, man, but what about a human by day, a freak animal killing machine by moonlight don't you understand? Werewolves are badass. We haven't seen one since we were kids."
"Okay, Sparky, then you know what? After we kill it, we can go to Disneyland," Delaney remarked, rolling her eyes at Dean.
Dean narrowed his eyes at Delaney who merely smirked at him. "Don't patronize me, Della! Do you guys even know what the best part about it is? We already know how to bring these suckers down." He held up a small silver bullet in his hand and waved it around. "One of these bad boys right to the heart. So what's our next move?"
"Talk to the boy who found the body."
-°—✞——✞—°-
"I don't understand. I already gave my statement to you guys," Maddox Brooks said to the siblings as he lead them through to the house and into the kitchen. He was only a few years older than Delaney and Delaney couldn't help but admit he was attractive with his short black hair, tanned skin and shiny brown eyes. Noticing a picture of him hung up on the wall in a lacrosse uniform from college explained why he had the athletic build.
"Right, we just need to verify a few things," Delaney explained and hated how small and nervous she sounded. She ignored the looks the boys shot her out of the corner of her eye.
As they entered the kitchen, a male who looked around the same age as Maddox stood up as they entered and smiled politely at them. He had fluffy brown hair, hazel eyes and a lacrosse hoodie with the number twenty-four on the back.
"This is my neighbor and best friend, Glenn Matthews. Lenny, this is detective..."
"Anderson, Davidson and Tyler," Dean informed, patting Delaney on the back with the last name he mentioned. Who immediately shook his hand off her shoulder before she cut it off with the knife in her boot.
"Nice to meet you," Glenn replied and shifted his gaze to Maddox. "I'll leave you guys to it. Text me later if you need anything, Maddie."
Maddox did a secret handshake with Glenn before he left the house. "Well, please have a seat."
"You must be pretty shaken up," Delaney said, taking a seat at the table in the dining room connected to the kitchen. "You worked closely with Nate Mulligan right?"
"Uh, yeah. We worked a lot of cases together the past three years I've worked there," Maddox explained.
"So you probably knew a lot about him," Dean noted.
Maddox chuckled and leant back in his chair, crossing his arms across his chest. "Probably knew the dude better than he knew himself. He was... a good dude."
Delaney raised an eyebrow as she sensed that Maddox held something back from them. "But?"
"Nothing, really. He had a few scotches in him and he started hitting on anything with legs. You know the type."
Delaney side glanced Dean and cleared her throat. "Yeah, I do."
Dean blinked as he realized his sister was talking about him and quickly changed the topic. "Um, did he have any enemies?"
"What do you mean?" Maddox questioned, furrowing his eyebrows. "It sure looked like an animal attack."
"Uh... no... yeah. We are just covering all the bases," Dean swiftly lied with an innocent smile on his face. "Anyone that might have had a beef with him - former client, an ex."
Sam tilted his head as Maddox seemed to think of at least one person. "What?"
"Well, it's embarrassing really, but my ex-girlfriend, Kelly," Maddox informed, shaking his head as an awkward chuckle escaped. "Kelly Mueller. After we broke up, she went kind of nuts. She's... well, I guess she's been kind of stalking me since I split from her. She has some weird conclusion that there was something going on with Nate and I. She showed up at my office."
"And what happened?" Delaney prodded.
"Kelly started going off on Nate. Started hitting him before a security guard lifted her off him. I was lucky I didn't get fired after that."
"When was the last time you saw Kelly?" Dean inquired.
Maddox chewed on his lip as he tried to recall the last time the two had made eye contact. "Um... the night Nate died, actually. We were all grabbing drinks at this bar, and Kelly showed up."
"And?"
Maddox shook his head with a shrug. "And nothing. It was.. like she was watching me. Then she was gone by the time I turned back around. Tell you the truth... she scares me a bit. Which is odd to say because she's smaller than me and used to never be able to hurt a fly. I just don't know what she is capable of anymore."
After speaking to Maddox for a bit more, the siblings said their goodbyes and left the apartment building.
"So, what do you think?" Dean asked, turning to his siblings as they made their way over to the Impala.
"Stalker ex-girlfriend. She hates the boss and she was there that night," Delaney recounted, stopping next to the Impala. "We've had worse theories right? Should we pay Kelly a visit?"
-°—✞——✞—°-
Later that night, the siblings snuck into Kelly's apartment while she was thankfully not home. As Delaney suspected, they didn't find much in Kelly's apartment that would lead them to believe that Kelly is in fact the werewolf running around. While they inspected the inside, a gun shot was heard from the outside and the three ran out to see a police officer dead behind a dumpster, wearing the same wounds that Nate and the other victims had.
Delaney had suggested they go check on Maddox because it would possibly mean that Kelly was out on the hunt. Of course, she earned relentless teasing from Dean about being worried about Maddox who she barely knew. Sam defended her in saying that she wasn't wrong in making sure Maddox wasn't the next one to be dead. Though, he did also give her a look that teased her because both boys knew she thought Maddox was cute.
"What's going on?" Glenn opened his apartment door to see the three siblings stood in front of Maddox's door.
"Police business, Lenny," Dean answered and turned at the sound of Maddox's door opening. "Hey, Maddox, is it okay if we talk in private?"
Once again, the three Winchesters found themselves sat in Maddox's dining room with coffee in front of them. After taking a sip from her coffee, Delaney licked her lips and cleared her throat. "Has Kelly been here?"
"Not exactly."
"What exactly does not exactly mean?" Dean chuckled, twirling his spoon around in his coffee.
"Well, she was outside last night - just looking. Just looking at me. Has she done something?"
Delaney exchanged a look with her brothers, not knowing how to respond. Their theory was still just that - a theory. They didn't have concrete evidence just yet that it was, in fact, Kelly. "Um... we aren't sure just yet. It's probably nothing. We just didn't want to take any chances."
"In fact, one of us should stay here with you, just in case she stops by. Where does she work?" Dean asked.
"She works at her dad's body shop."
"You mind grabbing us that address?" Delaney questioned and smiled when Maddox left the room to grab the address for them.
Dean pat his sister on the shoulder and smiled knowingly. "So, you'll stay here while Sammy and I go check it out right?"
"What? Why me?"
"Because you're the youngest."
Delaney crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at her brother. "That's a load of bull, Dean. Why do I have to always stay back?"
"Fine, we'll settle this the old fashioned way," Sam offered and placed his mug down on the counter along with Delaney's. "Rock, paper, scissors, little one."
Delaney sighed but relented and held up her fist, hitting it against her hand three times before showing scissors while Sam showed rock.
"Delly, always with the scissors. Never changes," Sam chuckled and ruffled her hair. "Have fun, kiddo."
Delaney huffed, watching as her brothers exited the apartment after taking the address from Maddox. Well, this was going to be awkward.
-°—✞——✞—°-
A little later on that morning, Delaney sat at the kitchen table while Maddox shifted through his mail. It had been quiet since the boys left as Maddox had gone to shower after pouring Delaney more coffee. She didn't know what to do and it reminded her of the beginning before her and Will were together. When they first started to hang out, she never knew what to do or say around him. He actually intimidated her because he was this carefree and happy guy that was always so confident in himself. Then there was her, another cheerleader who was still getting used to being away from her family for the first time. Even though it was her decision to leave in the first place.
"Um... would you want to sit on the couch? It's a lot more comfortable than that stiff thing," Maddox offered, knocking Delaney out of her thoughts.
Delaney forced a smile, still feeling incredibly uncomfortable and awkward. "No, it's fine. Honestly."
"Okay, well if you change your mind, it's still there," Maddox chuckled and walked away to grab his laundry basket to fold laundry.
Delaney squeaked quietly when she saw his boxers and went to move to the couch when her phone went off in her back pocket. She politely excused herself from Maddox and rushed over to the couch. She was pretty sure there were skid marks in the floor with how fast she flew from the chair to the couch across the way. "Hello?"
"Let me guess, you're sitting on his couch like a stiff trying to think of something to say."
"Shut up, Dean. Did you find Kelly?"
"She hasn't been at work all week, but because your brothers are so good, we got a line on where she might be. So, uh... what's he wearing?"
"Bye, Dean," Delaney hung up the phone, tossing it onto the couch with next to her. Dean should count his lucky stars he wasn't there right now or he'd definitely get it from her.
Maddox walked over to the couch and sat down next to Delaney, switching on the TV and putting on the football game. "You don't mind, right?"
Delaney rolled her lips into her mouth and shook her head, feeling weird watching football and not having it be Will next to her or the one playing. "No. It's your place."
-°—✞——✞—°-
"That was completely out of bounds," Delaney snapped at the TV, earning an amused laugh from Maddox. "I swear this ref sucks."
"How do you know so much about football?" Maddox questioned, turning off the TV since it was clear the other team would be winning with there only being one minute left and the opposing team was ahead by twelve.
Delaney turned on the couch so she could properly face Maddox, who mirrored her actions and hugged a pillow to his chest. "I was the only girl in my family. My brothers were always watching sports when it was their turn to take over the TV. Then my ex-boyfriend was a football player at our college."
"Well, you definitely know a lot more than most of the guys I know," Maddox said, smiling softly.
Delaney giggled and leaned her head on her hand. "So, can I ask you something? It's a bit personal."
"You did see my boxers so I'm pretty sure we're basically married now," Maddox mused. "Shoot."
"Well, you're - you're clearly smart. I mean, your place is full of books, you know? Of course, you're independent living by yourself and all, so what were you doing with Kelly?"
Maddox was quiet for a long moment as he tried to think of a good reason to have been with someone like his ex. "I don't know, to be honest. I mean, it's not like she introduced herself, like, hi, I'm possessive and controlling, and I like to hit random guys. Want to be my boyfriend?"
Delaney smiled along with Maddox and nodded, getting where he came from. "Yeah, I guess we all make mistakes."
"Mine is wanted by the police. You want to know why I stayed with her? Really?" Maddox asked and Delaney nodded in response. "I was too insecure to leave."
Delaney's eyes widened at Maddox's confession. It shocked her because this jocky, outgoing boy was insecure? It was hard to believe. "You? Insecure? You don't seem like the type."
"Yeah, well, some stuff happened. My life changed, I changed, for the better. At least, I think so."
"What happened? If you don't mind me asking."
"I was mugged and beat up one night," Maddox informed and Delaney frowned at the news. "I know it sounds strange to call it a good thing, but don't get me wrong - it did rattle me. Then it hit me, I could keep feeling sorry for myself or I could take control of my life. I chose the latter. First thing I did was tell Kelly she had to go."
"Smart move."
Maddox hugged the pillow closer to him and crossed his legs underneath him. "Apparently. Everything else just opened up, blossomed. It's all be wonderful, really." He tilted his head when Delaney shrugged. "What? Doesn't everybody think that being a victim of random violence is the best thing that ever happened to them?"
Delaney giggled and bowed her head, looking down to her lap where she fiddled with her fingers. "Yeah, not so much. You're... definitely unusual."
Maddox raised an amused eyebrow and twirled a finger by his head indicating he was crazy. "Like crazy type of unusual?"
"No.. um... impressive type."
"You think so?"
As Delaney is about to answer, her phone goes off again and she smiled apologetically at Maddox. She took her phone out from the couch and answered. "Hello?"
"Delly, we found him."
"Good, Sammy, don't take your eyes off him."
"Oh, our eyes are definitely glued. Look, I'm gonna let you go so we don't miss anything. I'll call you back later."
Delaney slowly took the phone away from her ear and stared down at her phone. That was weird.
-°—✞——✞—°-
"So, um... I'm gonna turn in," Maddox announced a few hours later after changing in the bedroom.
Delaney turned away from where she stood at the window, staring up at the full moon. "Oh, okay. Well, I'll be out here if you need something."
"You sure you don't want to take the bed?" Maddox offered, gesturing over his shoulder towards his open bedroom. "I can't make you stay on the couch."
"No, honestly, it's okay," Delaney waved Maddox off with a small smile. She probably wouldn't get much sleep anyway. "Just call out if you hear anything."
Maddox eyed Delaney for a second, but eventually relented and walked into his bedroom and shut the door behind him.
-°—✞——✞—°-
The next morning, Delaney made herself coffee and had just finished fixing it up before her phone went off. She sighed and grabbed the phone from the counter to see it was Dean, putting the phone to her ear. "Dean, you okay?"
"Yeah, now that I'm conscious. The werewolf knocked Sammy and I out. Della, it's Maddox."
"What?!" Delaney exclaimed as she rushed over to Maddox's bedroom door while Dean snapped at her doing a terrible job of watching him. She quietly pushed open the door to see Maddox sleeping soundly in his bed under the covers. "Dean, I've been there the whole time. He's in bed asleep."
"Well, he wasn't an hour ago. Check his right arm below his elbow. I nicked him with a silver knife."
Delaney ran a hand over her face, hanging up with Dean just as Maddox woke up and greeted her as he saw her outside his door. She turned to him and flinched when she saw the small gash on Maddox's arm and noticed he had no shirt on.
"Uh, where are my pajamas?" Maddox asked and furrowed his eyebrows when Delaney walked away. "Lane? What's going on? Where are you going?"
Delaney bolted up Maddox's door and leant against it when he stepped out of the bedroom. "I'm not going anywhere and neither are you."
After letting Maddox put on some clothes, Delaney had made him sit in a chair with his wrists bound to it while she gripped onto the handgun. Dean and Sam were on their way to the apartment so she just had to wait it out till they showed up.
"You're psychotic," Maddox snapped, trying to tug against the ropes even though it did nothing. "The whole I'm a cop trick. God, I am so stupid."
"Well, I guess neither of us are who we said we were, huh?" Delaney countered, crossing her arms across her chest.
"Lane, you're sic, okay? You're imagining things. Monsters don't exist. Not really."
Delaney scoffed and laughed incredulously. "You know what? Save the act, Maddox. I found out your secret. No need to hide it."
"It's not an act and there's no secret! I'm not a werewolf. There is no such thing. It's made up, alright? They're not real! You know they're not real!"
Delaney balked and stormed over to Maddox, showing him the wound on his right arm. "No?! Then where did that come from?!"
"I don't know! Lane, God, you need help. Please don't do something that you'll regret. I'm not what you think I am. I'm not."
A knock on the apartment door stopped the conversation and Delaney walked over to it, opening the door for her brothers who walked in immediately. Dean grabbed onto Delaney and quickly checked her over for wounds but she waved him off. The only thing that was wounded was her feelings. Why couldn't she like one guy that wouldn't be apart of the supernatural? First Will being taken by the yellow eyed demon and now Maddox supposedly being the exact thing she hunts.
"How you doing?" Dean retorted as he walked into the living room where Maddox was tied up. "Our heads feel great, thanks."
"Dee, can we talk?" Delaney asked, tugging on his sleeve to follow her into Maddox's room away from ear shot. "I don't think he's what you think. He had no idea what I was talking about."
"He's lying," Dean argued.
Delaney shrugged and glanced over her shoulder in the direction of Maddox. "Or he doesn't know he's changing. Maybe when the creature takes over, he blacks out."
"Like the Incredible Hulk?" Sam questioned, raising an eyebrow. "I've never heard of that happening. Delly, come on. He ganked his boss and his ex-girlfriend. That doesn't sound ration unconscious."
"Guys, come on, what if it was? What if the animal part of his brain saw both as threats? Hell, the cop, too."
"Are you the dog whisperer now, Della?"
Delaney ran a hand through her hair in frustration, tugging lightly on the ends. "I don't know, Dean! I just... there was something in his eyes."
"Yeah, he's killing people."
"But if he has no control - "
"Exactly, he can't control it," Dean cut off his sister, waving his hands around. "It's not gonna change anything, even if he is telling the truth."
"I am not pulling a bullet through some guy who has no idea what's happening," Delaney snapped.
Dean shook his head as he narrowed his eyes at her. "Della, he's a monster and you're feeling sorry for him?"
"Maybe I understand him," Delaney replied, shutting her brothers up. "Look, there might be another way we can get the job done without having to waste him."
Sam eyed Delaney as she paced around the room. "Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?"
"Dad had a theory in his journal about how lycanthropy might have a cure where you kill the wolf that bit you. It would sever the bloodline."
"Keyword there is might, Della. Meaning who the hell knows?"
Delaney slapped a hand to her side as she groaned in frustration. "It's worth a shot, isn't it?"
"We don't even know where to look. The puppy that bit her - it could be anyone, anywhere. Could have been years ago," Sam countered.
Delaney puffed out her cheeks as she tried to figure out what they could do. If Maddox didn't know what he was doing, they should at least try to help him and save him. Isn't that what their whole family motto was? Save people and hunt things? Delaney wasn't just going to stray away from that because her brothers wanted to axe him without a second thought.
"No, I don't think so," Delaney gasped as an idea came to her and she rushed out of the room before her brothers could say anything on the matter. She stopped in front of Maddox and bent down so they were eye to eye. "Maddox, when were you mugged?"
Maddox merely stared at Delaney with narrowed eyes. Okay... she deserved that.
"Please, Maddox, it's important. Just answer the question."
Maddox sighed heavily and sat up more in the chair. "About a month ago."
"Did you see the guy?"
"No. He grabbed me from behind."
Sam exchanged a look with his sister who looked desperate to help the poor guy out. She hadn't been wrong yet about anything so might as well play along. "Okay, did he bite you?"
Maddox froze, his eyes widening which immediately answered the question. "On the back of my neck. H - how did you guys know that?"
Delaney pushed her handgun into Dean's chest and walked around Maddox's chair to inspect the back of his neck. Sure enough, in the corner of his neck was a bite mark that looked like it was slightly healed over.
"Oh, that's just a love bite. Could have been a lot worse," Dean commented, tilting his head as he looked down at the wound.
Delaney shot Dean a look to shut up before she circled Maddox's chair again to stand in front of him. "Where were you?"
"Uh... walking home from a friend's house. Not too far from Hunter's Point."
"Excuse us again," Delaney whispered and tugged both of her brothers back into the room out of earshot of Maddox. "Hunter's Point. Same place those other murders happened. I'm telling you that it's the werewolf's hunting grounds."
Dean shook his head as he ran a hand over his hair. "Della, that's may be true, but that doesn't mean the werewolf will be there tonight."
"It's the right time of the lunar cycle," Delaney reminded and ran her hands down her face in frustration. "Look, I know it's a long shot, okay?"
"You're forgetting something. Maddox might turn soon, alright? We can't just let him take off to an all-you-can-eat buffet," Dean argued softly.
Delaney placed her hands on her hips as she took a moment to flip through their very limited options at this point. There wasn't much they could do except have hope. "I'll ... I'll stay with him."
"And if he busts loose?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow when Delaney just rolled her lips into her mouth. "Delly?"
"I'll do it," Delaney mumbled, hoping against all hope that she wouldn't have to put a bullet in Maddox's head.
"Della..."
"I'll shoot him, alright?" Delaney cut off Dean, her voice small and wavering. She blinked away the tears that threatened to fall. "Dee, Sammy, please. I just... I need you to go out there. At least go look for the thing. We can save this guy."
Dean and Sam exchanged an unreadable gaze, clearly having another one of their silent conversations that Delaney could never read. Part of her wondered if it was a brother or male thing.
"Fine, but you better be alert," Dean pointed a finger at her as he passed by with Sam in tow.
Delaney closed her eyes and leant against the wall, suddenly feeling heavily exhausted. This was all just becoming way too much and her battling feelings about Maddox didn't help. He was a great guy and if this were a different place and time where Will had died normally and she was normal, her and Maddox could have been great friends that lead to more eventually if they worked out.
It sucked.
-°—✞——✞—°-
A few hours later, Delaney stood in front of the window behind Maddox's chair as she watched the full moon. The sound of squelching and growling behind her, caused Delaney to turn just as Maddox broke loose from the chair. He knocked her to the ground with his claws and Delaney ignored the stinging in her cheek and the blood that trailed down it as scrambled back to her feet. She aimed the gun at Maddox who now had bright blue eyes, sharp teeth and long claws where his nails used to be.
Delaney kept her gun aimed at Maddox as she slowly backed away from the growling werewolf. Just as he lunged at Delaney, she moved out of the way, forcing Maddox into his bedroom. She moved the entertainment center in front of the door, trapping him inside as she leant her back against the entertainment center and dropped down onto her butt. She placed her face in her hands and groaned quietly into them.
Why could the Winchesters never win?
-°—✞——✞—°-
"It was sort of sad, actually. Glenn had no clue what was going on. Hey, why do you think he turned Maddox instead of just killing him in the first place?" Dean asked as the three siblings sat in the Impala outside of Maddox's apartment building.
It was the next morning and Maddox had finally woken up about a half hour ago, just before the boys showed up. He didn't seem to remember anything from the night prior, shocked when he saw all the claw marks along the walls and door of his bedroom and the mess of furniture everywhere from when he was still rabid. Delaney had said her goodbyes to Maddox as he had his back turned to her, not having the courage to say it to his face. She made sure to assure him that it was over now and she left before her could turn back around from inspecting the damage he had done.
"I don't know. I mean, the two were best friends after all. Maybe there was a primal instinct in Glenn to not kill Maddox," Delaney suggested, kicking her feet up onto the window as she laid across the back seat of the Impala.
"So...."
Delaney lolled her head to the side to see Dean had now twisted in his seat to look down at her. "So what?"
"Speaking of Maddox..."
"Whatever, Dean."
"Don't whatever me, Della. You really liked him. Maybe, uh - "
Delaney scoffed softly and shook her head. "Dean, he thought I was a stark-raving lunatic."
"You saved his life," Sam reminded his sister, patting her leg.
"Yeah, but he doesn't know that."
A knock on the passenger side window caused the three Winchesters to snap their gazes out the window, Delaney sitting up in her seat. Stood outside the window was Maddox and Sam rolled the window down so they could properly talk to the guy.
"You know, for a stakeout, your car's a bit conspicuous. What are you still doing here?" Maddox asked, bending down so he could see the three siblings. The hood on his gray sweatshirt was pulled over his head to protect him from the light rain.
"Honestly?" Dean said, receiving a nod in response from Maddox. "Uh, we're pretty sure you're not gonna turn tonight, but we've gotta be a hundred percent, so... you know, we're ... lurking."
"I know this sounds crazy," Delaney sheepishly smiled at Maddox who chuckled, waving her off.
"Nah, it's cool. Well, if we're gonna wait it out... we might as well do it together."
Maddox allowed the three siblings back into his apartment and shut the door behind them. "So, you weren't lying about this whole thing, were you? What you did - it was to help me."
Delaney bit on her bottom lip nervously as she nodded, rocking back on her heels. "Uh... yeah."
"I did all those horrible things... when I turned," Maddox deflated, pushing his hood off and pushing his fingers through his tangled hair.
"You didn't know," Delaney whispered, smiling softly at Maddox to show that she had no ill feelings towards him.
"So... when will we know for sure?" Maddox asked, eyes shifting to the two older boys who hadn't said a word since they left the Impala. "Moonrise?"
"No, I don't think so. Delaney mentioned that you turned in the middle of the night last night. I think we got to hang in until sunup," Sam explained.
Dean exhaled heavily and glanced around the room. "Well, looks like we got a few hours to kill. Poker, anyone?"
The rest of the day and night, the four hung out together. They played a bit of poker like Dean suggested, watched a movie or two and Maddox and Delaney even hung out on the couch alone for a bit while Dean and Sam sat at the dining room table, quietly discussing different strategies should Maddox change. Maddox didn't hear them, but Delaney did and it only made her hope even more that killing Glenn helped.
As the sun rose outside the window with Maddox and Delaney stood in front of it and the boys sat on the couch, the two let out a breath neither one knew they were holding. "So... that means it worked?"
"I think so," Delaney replied, feeling as if a weight lifted off her shoulders.
"Thank, God," Maddox rasped and brought Delaney into his chest, hugging her tight. "Thank you so much."
Dean cleared his throat and the duo quickly pulled away from each other and smiled awkwardly at the two older boys across from them.
"Thanks to you guys, too."
Dean waved his hand to show it was nothing and sent Delaney a secret smirk. "Well, Sammy and I are gonna get out of here. You know, watch some pay-per-view or something." He grabbed onto Sam's jacket and hauled him out of the apartment and shut the door behind him.
Delaney's face heat up in embarrassment as Maddox bowed his head and laughed at Dean's no subtle way of letting the two be alone. "I am so sorry about him. He was dropped on his head when we were kids. He means well, but..."
"He thinks you're gonna get laid?" Maddox finished for her with an amused grin.
Delaney laughed softly and scratched the back of her neck. "Which is odd coming from him since he usually stares down any dude that even blinks at me." She dropped her hand to her side as she turned to Maddox. "Look, Mads, I - "
"It's okay."
"No. I know I scared the crap out of you, all right? I–I mean, I tied you to a chair for crying out loud!" Delaney exclaimed, throwing her hands into the air. "It's crazy."
Maddox smiled and brushed his fingers against the threw small claw marks on Delaney's cheek. "I think we're even now that I scratched up that pretty face of yours."
Delaney glanced into Maddox's eyes and felt her cheeks heat up again at the compliment. No matter how much she wished she could be normal it couldn't happen. She was finally accepting Will's death and Maddox could have been someone that she fell for eventually. However, her life didn't work that way and the two had been through too much now for them to even consider anything... right? "There's just no way ... we could go back, you know? Before it happened."
"No way," Maddox whispered, pushing a piece of hair behind Delaney's ear.
Delaney shook her head, momentarily mesmerized by Maddox's eyes. Then, after a moment, Maddox grabbed Delaney by the waist and kissed her. Delaney immediately wrapped her arms around his neck and allowed him to carry her to his bedroom where she was placed down onto the plus mattress. They stripped each other of their clothing and Maddox's lips trailed all over Delaney's face and chest.
Throughout the night, the two just enjoy being with each other and finally letting go of all they had been holding back the whole time they'd been around one another. They eventually fell asleep wrapped up in each other's arms, happy and content. For once in their lives.

A bit later Delaney woke up and rubbed her eyes as she sat up in bed, not feeling Maddox next to her any longer. She heard a growl and turned to see Maddox, who had returned to his werewolf form, eyes blue and fangs bared at the green eyed girl on his bed. Before Delaney could catch him, he jumped out the window, leaving Delaney stunned by the window he had just leaped from.
Delaney raced around the room to throw her clothes back on and rushed out of the apartment to the motel that thankfully wasn't far from Maddox's apartment building, calling Bobby on the way there for any information he could have. She barreled through the hallways to the room her brothers rented and started to bang on the door, not caring how loud she was. They needed to find Maddox and fast.
Dean opened the door and blinked in surprise at the sight of his sister. "Della? I thought you were - "
"He - he turned," Delaney choked out, trying to catch her breath as she leant against the doorframe for support.
"What?" Sam gasped, sharing a confused look with Dean.
"I couldn't catch him in time."
"We'll find her, Della," Dean assured his baby sister and began to push her back down the hallway with Sam in tow, who had quickly grabbed both his and Dean's jackets and the duffle bag of weapons.
Delaney walked around the motel parking lot to get to the Impala with Dean and Sam on either side of her. "I called Bobby already. He doesn't know anything, except he knew severing the bloodline wouldn't work. That's everyone. They all say it's impossible to reverse it."
"How come he didn't turn when we were with him?" Dean asked, not understanding how any of this worked. It was weird that only certain times Maddox changed, even with the lunar cycle in full effect. "So, you put him to bed and then he wolfed out? Maybe he's gotta be asleep to turn."
Delaney stopped Dean and Sam from walking and crossed her arms. "What does that even matter, Dean? We got to find some way to help him, some legend we missed."
"Delly, if we did... don't you think someone we know would have known something?" Sam asked softly, not wanting to sound too harsh so he would upset his sister more. It was already clear enough the girl was losing her mind as her breathing was still a bit unsteady.
"What?"
"Baby girl, I hate to say it, but Sam is right, okay? He's a great dude, honestly, but a part of him is - "
Delaney bit the inside of her cheek as her eyes narrowed at Dean. "Evil? That's what they say about me, Dean. So me you won't kill, but him you're just gonna blow away?"
A cellphone ringing cut off whatever response Dean would have had and Delaney pulled it out of her back pocket when she realized it was her phone. She placed the phone to her ear and turned away from her brothers. "Hello?"
"Lane?"
"Mads, where are you?" Delaney asked, chewing on her thumbnail as worry coursed through her for the male.
"I don't - I don't - I don't know where I am."
"Well, do you see any street signs?"
"Um... yeah, yeah, Middle Point."
Delaney glanced over her shoulder at her brothers who raised their eyebrows in curiosity. "Alright, hang on tight, Maddox. We're going to come get you, just stay where you are."

An hour later, the four sat in Maddox's apartment at the table in the dining room. Maddox was sat at the head of the table with Dean's handgun in front of him and Dean and Sam took to sitting on the side of the table in front of Maddox while Delaney sat in a chair next to him.
"I don't remember anything. I probably killed someone last night. Didn't I?"
"There's no way to know just yet," Dean answered.
"Is there something else we can try to make it go away?" Maddox inquired, pushing up the sleeve of Sam's button up that Sam had given to him when they found Maddox at Middle Point naked in the phone booth.
Delaney placed a hand over Maddox's and squeezed it assuringly with a small smile. "We'll find something. There's got to be some answer - somewhere."
"That's not entirely true," Dean said, earning Maddox and Delaney's attention. "You know it, Della. Look, you deserve to know the truth. We've scoured every source. There's just no cure."
Maddox's eyes shifted to Delaney who avoided eye contact with him, not wanting to see the disappointment that definitely flickered across his face. "Is - is he right, Lane?"
Delaney sniffled and stood up from her chair, turning away from the three boys. She couldn't face any of them, not wanting them to see the mental breakdown that was showing visibly on her features. Maddox was gonna be another one she failed to save and it hurt.
Sam cleared his throat awkwardly and decided to fill the awkward silence with why they were really there. "Well, we could lock you up at night, but ... you bust out - and some night you will - someone else dies. I'm sorry. I am, Maddox."
Maddox exhaled as he ran a hand over his watery eyes to clear the tears, clearly scared of what his end was going to be. "So, I guess that's all there is to it, then."
"Stop," Delaney snapped and turned to the boys again, her face wet with tears and cheeks turning red from the emotion. "Don't think like that."
"Lane, I don't want to hurt anyone else and I most importantly do not want to hurt you," Maddox shakily voiced, grabbing the handgun from the table and stood from his chair. He walked over to Delaney and held up the handgun to her.
"Put that down."
Maddox shook his head and gently placed the handgun into Delaney's hand. "I can't do it myself. I need you to help me."
"Maddox, no," Delaney denied harshly, pushing the gun back into Maddox's. "I can't and I won't, okay?"
"Lane... I'm a monster."
Delaney's eyes welled up with more tears and they fell down her cheeks as Maddox gently wiped them away. "You don't have to be. We could find a way, all right? I can. I'm gonna save you."
Maddox sniffled as his own tears fell down his face and he smiled sadly at Delaney. "You tried. I know you tried, but this is all there is left. Help me, Lane. I want you to do it. I want it to be you."
"I can't."
" I don't wanna die. I don't, but I can't live like this. This is the way you can save me. I'm asking you to save me," Maddox begged Delaney, who still refused to take the gun from him.
Delaney shook her head and pushed past Maddox to walk to another room, sniffling and wiping at her face to dry it of the tears. Even though it didn't make a difference because more tears just fell down her face anyway.
"Della..." Dean softly called and she slowly turned to face him and Sam who both wore similar looks of sympathy. Both of their faces softening at the look of heartbreak on their baby sister's face. It was Will all over again. "I'm sorry, baby girl."
Delaney let out a small whimper and shook her head. "No, you're right. He's right. It just sucks because I was finally okay after Will's death. Now I have to go through this shit all over again."
"Delly, I'll do it," Sam offered and took the gun from Dean who wrapped his arms around Delaney now that his hands were empty, softly rubbing her back and kissing the top of her head.
"He asked me to," Delaney said and stepped away from Dean, shakily taking the gun from Sam as another whimper escaped. "I'll do it. Just wait here." She slowly walked back into the dining room area where Maddox was and stopped in front of him.
Maddox reached out and squeezed her hand. "For what's it worth, I'm sorry and I'm glad to have met you."
Delaney tried to smile, but her face wouldn't follow listen to her and it came out as more of a grimace, the tears streaming down her face even more. "I'm sorry, too."
Maddox bent down and gently kissed Delaney before pulling back and leaving one last kiss on her forehead. He stepped back knelt on the ground before her and closed his eyes, visibly shaking as he obviously didn't want to die, but knew he had to. If he didn't, more people could get hurt and as much it pained them, the two knew it had to be done.
Delaney raised the gun and aimed it at Maddox's forehead. She squeezed her eyes shut and turned her head away, pulling the trigger on the gun. Maddox's body dropped to the ground along with her heart.
AUTHORS NOTE
Hi hey hello
Delaney just doesn't have luck in the dating department.... or the life department really. None of you should even be remotely surprised I made Tyler Posey be the substitute for the original female part of this chapter or that the neighbor Glen was Dylan O'Brien and they were best friends and played lacrosse. Originally, it was actually gonna be Hoechlin as Maddox, especially because his eyes were blue as a werewolf, but I feel like Tyler Posey fit "maddison turned maddox" character better than Hoechlin did.
These last FIVE CHAPTERS are gonna be HELLA bumpy yall. Like I'm both ready and not ready for the end of this bitch so we can move onto Book 3. I am ready for the drama and rollercoaster ride to just PLUMMET. LET'S GET IT, PEEPS.
ALSO, IT'S YA GIRL'S BIRTHDAY TODAY WOOP WOOP! I AM OFFICIALLY 23 *cue WHATS MY AGE AGAIN by BLINK 182*
