The Vanishing Of Will Byers
"Something is coming, something coming for blood. A shadow grows in the walls behind you, swallowing you in darkness. It is almost here..." Mike trailed off while looking around at his group of friends, all huddled around the worn-out board game that shined slightly under the dull basement lighting.
"What is it?" Will Byers, The youngest of the group asked, with wide eyes as he was getting eager to know what his friend was going on about.
"What if it's the Demogorgon?" Dustin asked as panic set into his eyes, foot began to tape violently on the floor.
"We're so screwed if it's the Demogorgon!" Mavis explained loudly while falling back into her chair and put a hand on her head dramatically. Being the only girl in the group of boys, she often tried her hardest to fit in with them as much as she could. She loved all four of the boys so much, she'd go to the extent of calling them family, much like how they would her.
"It's not the Demogogan" Lucas sighed while she gave him a look which he only returned. Lucas and Mavis were easily the closest of the four, not that she wasn't close with the others. They held a bond, a bond no one would ever understand considering they were so different, but maybe that's what made them so close.
"An army of tablets charge into the chamber!" Mike explained loudly while slapping the card into the middle of the board, the group sighed in relief.
"Tablets?" Dustin asked as the fours' laughter swarmed in the air as Mike held a serious face.
"Wait. Do you hear that? That- that sound... boom boom. Boom! That didn't come from the tribals... that came from something else" Mike said as he slapped his hand on the table, causing Mavis to gasp at the sudden noise, her fingertips moving anxiously on the wooden table.
"The Demogogan!" Mike yelled while banging the action figure into the table, the other four all groaned and threw their hands in the air.
"We're in deep shit" Dustin groaned and rubbed his temple with his fingers.
"Will your action!" Mike yelled at him, waiting for the smallest boy to choose how to defeat the Demogorgon.
"I don't know," Will said in a panic while looking into everyone's eyes for an answer.
"Fireball him!" Mike yelled back as Mavis shook her head quickly, the soft waved curls around her face looked like a small wave as she did so.
"You have to cast a thirteen or above" Will explained as if he read his only female friends' minds.
"Exactly! So cast protection" Mavis explained while on the edge of her seat, gripping the ends of the old table.
"Don't be a pussy! Fireball him" Lucas told the Byers boy making, Mavis slap his arm at the word, Will's eyes held panic.
"Cast protection" Dustin glared, agreeing with Mavis as they all focused on Will.
"The Demogogan is tired of your silly human bickering! It stomps toward you! Boom!" Mike yelled while hitting the table again to build up the tension.
"Fireball him!" Lucas yelled while jumping off his seat.
"Rouge! Can you steal him a new form of weapon?" Mike asked loudly while looking toward Mavis.
"There isn't any more to steal! Protect yourself and cast it" Mavis explained while looking through the cards and dice in front of her, the other boys began to yell random things along the lines of fireball or protection.
"Fireball!" Will yelled while rolling the dice until they clanged on the floor and fell all over the place, causing the group to stand up and look for them one by one.
"Where is it?" Lucas asked as the five looked under the ripped couch's and all the other gadgets Mike stored down in his basement for them.
"Mike!" Karen shouted as she looked down the stairs at her son, who put his hands up in surrender, the chatter of his friends behind him causing his Mother to sigh in annoyance.
"Mom we're in the middle of a campaign" Mike said to her in defense.
"You mean the end? Fifteen after" Karen pointed out while looking down at the watch on her wrist.
"Mom wait! Just twenty more minutes" Mike begged while running after her as Mavis tripped over the couch looking for the dice. Lucas laugh at her while she used her foot to kick the back of his legs, making the boy yelp and fall to the hard ground too.
"Oh! I got it" Lucas said while grabbing the other dice as the remaining three jogged over.
"Does the seven-count?" Will asked in a hopeful voice.
"It was a seven?" The boy asked him while Mavis slapped her forehead rather harder than she expected, causing her to stumble back a bit.
"Did Mike see it?" Mavis asked him, making Will shake his head toward her quickly.
"Then it doesn't count," Lucas said as Mavis smiled and put an arm around the youngest Byers member. They all pulled their coats and shoes on while going toward the stairs before Dustin's lisped voice caused them to stop.
"Hey guys, anyone wants this?" he asked while holding up the pizza box.
"No," they all said while jogging up the stairs after Mavis called out to Dustin in goodbyes.
"There's something wrong with your sister," Dustin said a few moments later as he met his friends in the garage.
"What are you talking about?" Mike asked him, annoyance dripping off his lips considering his Mom put him in a bad mood after cutting their campaign short.
"She's got a stick up her butt" Dustin shrugged while grabbing his bike.
"Yeah because she's been dating that douch bag Steve" Lucas rolled his eyes as Mavis pulled the pink coat closer to her body as she got a shiver from the night's wind. It caused her nose turn a slight shade of red.
"Isn't he your neighbor?" Will asked while looking toward the girl, who didn't stand much taller than him, an inch at the most. Both of Mavis' parents were rather shorter, and while she was still young, she didn't expect to get much taller. It use to really bother her because Mike would make jokes and rest his arm on her head, then she hit him in the balls and realized she could be a badass no matter what height she was.
"Sadly" Mavis groaned while kicking the kick stand off the pavement, balancing herself upright.
"Yup, she's turning into a real jerk" Dustin rolled his eyes.
"She's always been a real jerk," Mike said to them while waving his hands around.
"Nu-uh, she use to be cool. Like that time she dressed up as an elf for our elder campaign" Dustin said as Mavis laughed.
"See you guys later" she commented while Will gave her a wave, the pink coat got smaller and smaller down the road.
When Mavis got home she jogged up the nice driveway to unlocked the front door and pulled her coat off, hearing a small clang from the kitchen, she crept over.
"Mom?" she asked while seeing the skinny woman with bags under her eyes and ratted hair, was pouring herself a drink. One-hundredth one of the night if Mavis had to guess.
"Where've you been?" Sarah asked her while taking the cigarettes out of her mouth to drink the alcohol.
"Just the Wheelers" Mavis said while watching the woman she once resembled and loved more than anything, drink her life away.
"Hum, head upstairs" Sarah nodded as Mavis hesitated, wanting to take the drink from her and lead her toward the bed so she wouldn't pass out on the couch or floor again.
"Mavis, head upstairs!" she told her only daughter, causing the girl to hurry up the stairs quickly.
