Chapter 16 ~ Looting Houses with My Boyfriend

Note: Sorry for the long wait on the update, guys! I was...obsessing over The Amazing Spider-Man movies...I have no regrets lol XD Anyway, enjoy the new chapter! :)

The wall loomed up before us, reaching high up into the sky. I swallowed as we stopped just behind one of the many abandoned houses that surrounded the wall. How were we going to break into a place so heavily fortified? Out of the corner of my eye, I could just see a person standing guard at the top. Owen rolled down the window of the vehicle and leaned his head out, signaling to the other truck behind us to stop as well.

Once the other truck had stopped, he opened the door of the truck and got out. The other Wolves followed suit and I did the same. While the Wolves gathered up their weapons from the back of the vehicle, I went to stand beside Owen.

I slipped my hand into his, intertwining our fingers before glancing over at him. He shot me a smile and squeezed my hand reassuringly.

"We can do this, Angel. We've done it plenty of times before,"he said to me, the bright sunlight making slivers of red in his normally dark hair.

I nodded, accepting his answer.

"Yeah, but I wasn't with you those times before. What if I mess this up for us?" I asked, a bit worried.

He smiled again and leaned in towards me, pressing a sweet kiss to my forehead.

"You won't. Besides," he said, gazing back up at the wall that towered before us, "You'll be by my side the whole time. Nothing can go wrong."

I nodded once more and Owen began to lead the men over to the abandoned cars that littered the road. We hid behind them, stealthily moving from car to car as we went. Finally, we reached the towering edifice. The Wolves huddled around Owen, weapons in hand. One of them handed me a knife and another handed Owen a sickle. I thanked him before turning back to Owen.

"Men, you know what to do. Take whatever you can find. And remember, take no hostages. Kill them all." he said to the group, his voice demanding authority.

My brown eyes snapped to him. We were killing them?! The Wolves nodded to their leader and I sucked in a breath as one of them began to climb the wall, his feet nimbly moving further upward. Owen's hand let go of mine, the warmth of his skin leaving my own. He walked over to the structure before turning to me.

"Come on." he said, gesturing for me to follow him.

Then he began to scale the wall as well, finding footholds as he went. I bit my lip and put one of my hands on the cool metal. Gosh, I hated heights, I thought to myself. Letting out a shaky breath, I began to climb. Higher and higher I went, rusty metal shavings coming off on my hands. The wall shook slightly as I climbed, more Wolves ascending behind me.

Flicking my tongue out over my dry lips, I continued. I tried not to think about how high up I was or what it would feel like if I fell. Not that I would feel anything. I'd probably die on impact. My dark brown hair brushed against my face as I finally made it to the top. Owen stood waiting for me, reaching a hand out.

I took it gratefully and he pulled me up. He moved the strands of hair away from my face and smiled down at me.

"I knew you could do it." he grinned and I rolled my eyes playfully at him.

Coming down was much easier than going up I found out whilst climbing down into the walled-in town of Alexandria. My feet hit the green grass with a thud, Owen landing just beside me. The angel wing key-chain swung back and forth against my jeans as I walked towards the road that ran through the town. It didn't look at all like I'd expected it too. The houses were well-kept unlike the abandoned ones I'd found so far. These still looked to be in livable condition, like houses had been before the apocalypse.

Almost as if the infection hadn't touched them at all here. The screams of people broke me from my thoughts. I looked around me and to my horror, I saw the Wolves chasing down civilians. One of them - a man - chased one woman until she fell to the pavement. Ax raised high, he swung it downward, cleaving her head in half. Bile rose up in my throat as her blood sprayed onto the pavement.

A sick feeling started in my stomach and suddenly, I couldn't handle it anymore. Bending over, I threw up onto the grass. I sucked in a deep breath just as Owen came to stand behind me, placing a gentle hand onto my back.

"Are you okay?" he asked, a concerned look plastered on his face.

I nodded slowly, wiping my mouth off onto the arm of my t-shirt. My eyes glanced over at him and he shrugged at me nonchalantly.

"What did you expect it to be like, Angel?" he asked before grabbing my hand.

My heart beat wildly in my chest as the civilians' blood-curdling screams and the bleating horn filled my ears. Owen pulled me along behind him just then and I went willingly. I didn't trust the Wolves but I trusted him. Our feet padded against the bricked pavement of the sidewalk before he stopped at one of the houses. I followed him up the short flight of steps that led to the porch and into the house itself, leaving the door wide open. The inside looked just like something out of a magazine.

Pictures of a happy family lined the white-washed walls of the hallway and nice furniture filled the living room. A large flat-screen TV sat against the wall in the middle of the room and a coffee-table littered with an assortment of video games was set in front of one of the couches. It looked nothing like where I had lived before. My mother and I could never afford a place this nice.

"I wonder who lives here..." I thought out loud, my fingers running along the walls.

Owen walked ahead of me, his sickle hanging down at his side. I sat down on one of the couches, leaning back into the soft cushions. I let out an audible sigh and smiled. Owen snickered at me.

"What?" I asked, putting my hands up defensively, "Do you know how long it's been since I've sat on something this soft?!"

He shook his head and laughed. Opening a cabinet that stood against the wall, he began to rummage through its contents. He pocketed a few things as he did. I smiled to myself as I watched him, his long tangled brown hair hanging down in his face. I loved him so much.

"So what are we looking for exactly?" I asked, arching an eyebrow.

He shrugged his shoulders as he continued his search.

"Nothing in particular. Just anything you want really. As well as any supplies we might-" he started.

The squeak of a floorboard cut him off and his eyes shot to mine. I nodded silently and got up off of the couch. Sliding behind it, I steadied my breathing. Owen leaned up against the wall closest to the open doorway, his sickle at the ready.
