ONCE, the world was born of fire and the goddess of a raging sea storm.

Where her hands had touched in the fire of the sky and raged against its lack of cooperation, something new had been created, a blank world of creation, free of corruption.

At first, there was nothing but an ocean, a goddess of storms, and a goddess who could move the sea. Her skin was silver and her eyes were filled with constellations; and she wrapped herself up into the moon; untouchable and perfect: the Tide Mover.

And then came The Lovers: Leta, the goddess of oblivion, and Iith, goddess of the stars, who created light together from the palms of their hands and the brush of their lips. It brought the dark world into sunshine and life, so living things could prosper.

But the world was barren, filled with only perfect and balanced things, and so Leta created beings of her own, to occupy the land which their forefathers and mothers had created.

But the creations were not like the stars or the moon or oblivion; they were corrupted, filled with human imperfection, greed and free-will. While Leta loved her creations, Iith did not. She was mortified by their flaws, unable to see the beauty in imperfection. It was her whispers which urged Leta to eradicate them, to start anew with something perfect, like the night sky, as these beings they could only bring destruction.

Leta, in her own love for her creation, refused. Iith worried about the damage they could bring to the carefully crafted world, and in doing so, threatened to rid the world of them herself. Leta would not accept the threat. Instead, she battled Iith against harming her creation.

In doing so, she struck Iith from the sky, and Iith, the stars, fell into oblivion. And Leta, to protect her children forged from blood, did nothing. Her own grief was enough punishment. Later she would let herself fall into the ocean like a comet from the sky, but that would come after.

Where Iith's blood fell upon the world, new beings were formed, which were born of hatred, stars, and a lover's betrayal. They looked like Leta's creation, and they spoke and walked like Leta's creation, but they were not. Inside their charcoal bones and starry lungs was their own corruption, a dark sliver of the night sky which only craved to destroy the light their creator's betrayer had bore.

They were born from the blood of stars, when the night sky was slashed open, and they breathed magic.

The ocean could only surrender to them, and where the water swelled away, a land which they would claim grew. The land of the forgotten; the land of the betrayed. And while its true name would come later, the creatures of Iith's creation understood their own nature.

They called themselves Godfallen, and they feared no living thing.
