Chapter 44 * Headed Home *

Dorothy and I led the Wizard through the ransacked city until we reached the palace.

"You can march me wherever you want, I'm not gonna send you two home," he told us as we all made our way up the stairs to the transport chamber.

"But this isn't about us. It's about what's best for all of us," I said, the gun still firmly in my hand.

"Oh, what's that?"

"Sending you home."

Finally, we reached the room.

"Whatever you did to get here, tell me so I can send you back," Dorothy told him.

"Well, let me just initiate the sequence if I can remember what he did. I think I forgot..." he trailed off and began to fiddle with the controls in the room.

As him and my twin talked, I walked over to gaze out the window and onto the city. Far in the distance, I could just make out the spires of the Palace of Ev. It looked like tiny dots at this distance. Memories of Jack flitted through my mind and I sighed. I already missed him so much.

"Neither of us have anything to go back to!" the Wizard erupted just then, "What? Go back to being nothing?!"

"I was not nothing! I piped up, arching my eyebrows.

"Then what were you? What was so precious that you had to return to?!" he questioned.

"My uncle, my aunt, my mother," I listed off to him.

"Your mother? In that case, let me absolve you of your desire! Your mother is here in Oz," he told us.

My eyes widened and Dorothy and I exchanged glances.

"Our mother is in Kansas and she's hurt so help us!" Dorothy said.

"Your mother is not Karen Chapman!" he retorted.

I rolled my eyes.

"You're lying to us again!" I spat at him in anger.

"I lied to you two before. But this time, it's the truth. And the truth will do us both some good here. Karen Chapman was hurt because I wanted her dead. Because I sent my men to kill her in Kansas. I thought she was gonna return. To Oz. For Jane, for me! But I'm not gonna let her or you bring me back! No! No-" he roared before being cut off.

A bullet embedded itself in his chest and he fell to the ground. Dorothy and I whipped around to see Jane standing behind us, a gun in her hand. My eyes widened to see her here. I'd always thought Jane was a pretty peaceful person. Guess not.

"Get up and start that machine! Get up! You have to take us back home, Frank! Frank! Frank! Frank!" Dorothy shouted at the fallen Wizard but he didn't move.

I sucked in a breath. The Wizard was dead!
