Chapter 32 * Burning Bridges *
As Jack and the rest of Lady Ev's servants packed the suitcases into the carriage, I strolled the streets of the city to look for my sister. Finally, I spotted her getting into a wagon with Lucas and a young girl. She embraced her once before breaking away. Memories of us as kids - playing, laughing, hugging - seeped into my mind then but I pushed it back. It was all in the past now - those good feelings between us. There was no need to go digging up skeletons that were better left buried.
Just then, a nun walked over to the wagon and stopped in front of them. She talked with them for a few minutes before walking away. It was then that I made my presence known, stepping out of the shadows.
"Dorothy!" I called out.
She spun around to face me as Lucas hopped into the driver's seat.
"Dawn! You made it! Come on," she said, holding a hand out to help me up.
I took a step back.
"I'm not going anywhere with you. I only came to say goodbye," I told her.
Dorothy rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"Don't be stupid, Dawn. Get up here!" she ordered me, strands of her long brown hair falling in her face.
I scoffed, crossing my arms.
"You're not in charge of me anymore, Dor. I'm staying!"
"Would you just listen to me for once?! Glinda can get us home! Don't you want to go back home?" she asked me sternly.
"I am home! Here. In Oz," I insisted, my tone getting louder as I got angrier at her.
"It isn't your home!" she persisted.
"No?" I shot back.
"You only want to stay in this world because of that man you found! Jack, wasn't it? You're really going to let your feelings for this guy decided your decisions?" Dorothy bit out.
"I'm living my life and a man doesn't define it! And you know that!" I spat back, "Besides, you're a hypocrite! Say what you want about "going home" and going to see Glinda "for the girl" but it's all a bunch of lies! You're only doing all of this for Lucas!"
That shut Dorothy right up. She glared daggers at me and I returned the look.
"Goodbye, Dawn." she finally said through gritted teeth as the wagon began to roll away.
"Goodbye, Dorothy." I replied, my voice emotionless.
