Chapter 3 *Wishing on Stars*
ย I scrambled over to help my sister. She grabbed his face and spoke gently.
"Lucas, you've been poisoned." she told him calmly but I heard the hint of panic in her voice.
She truly had come to care for this guy. After several seconds of trying to get him to sip some charcoal to soak up the poison, he finally drank and we let out a sigh of relief as he tilted his head back onto his pillow. Dorothy's eyes hardened then and she unsheathed his sword, a murderous look on her face. She stalked up to the bedroom and I tried to call her back.
"Dorothy! Dorothy, what are you going to do?!" I shouted after her but she ignored me.
It didn't matter what I said, she'd do what she wanted to anyway. I sighed before slumping down into a chair by the open window. Toto padded over to me before lying down at my feet. It was going to be a long night. Leaning my head back, I gazed out into the night sky. Thoughts came back to me of the mysterious boy we'd met earlier.
He was different. But in a good way. And not anything like the boys back home in Kansas, I thought to myself with a wry smile. I pushed back a strand of my dark hair and pulled my knees into my chest. I hoped I saw Jack again. He was the only thing I'd seen so far in this strange world that looked mildly interesting to me. Flicking my eyes up to the stars, I smiled and closed my eyes before whispering into the cool night air.
"Star light,
Star bright,
The first star I see tonight,
I wish I may,
I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight..." I said softly before stopping a second.
I bit my lip and grinned, suddenly thinking of the next words to say.
"To see Jack so,
Jack, be nimble,
Jack, be quick-"
A loud knock at the door cut me off. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. Who would be here at this time of night? I quickly got up from my perch by the window to answer the door. That healer really didn't need to be woken up right now. My eyes flitted up to the ceiling where my sister was doing who-knows-what upstairs with that sword.
I just shook my head and wrenched the door open. Standing before me in the doorway was the one person I'd been wishing would return. Jack. His curly sandy brown hair was disheveled and his cerulean coat rumpled. But he still looked as attractive as he did earlier in the day.
"Um...Is-is Tip here?" he asked, an accent that sound strangely Welsh tinging his words.
I bit my lip at his adorableness and smiled at him, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.
"Who?" I asked.
His gray eyes flitted around the room behind me before answering.
"Tip...the-the boy who lives here. Is he here?" he asked again.
"You mean...the person who's locked up in that room?" I said, answering his question with another question.
He smiled slightly and nodded. I opened the door a little wider and gestured for him to come in.
"Yeah, I guess he's still here. I mean, he's still locked up and there's absolutely no way he could get out so why wouldn't he be?" I asked him sarcastically, arching an eyebrow.
He shrugged and smiled sheepishly in response, coming to stand in the middle of the room. I pointed towards the stairs.
"My sister might be trying to break him out, actually. She took the sword with her, anyway." I told him and led the way upstairs.
He followed closely behind me, making me slightly nervous at his nearness. As we rounded the corner, we found Dorothy with her sword raised high, about to break the chain off of Tip's bedroom door.
