twenty: home sweet home
June 29, 1985
Dustin was coming home that morning and Beth never felt so happy. He had only been gone for a month but that was too long. They gang decided to surprise Dustin by ignoring his calls and then surprising him with a sweet welcome home. His mom thought it was a sweet idea and lend them an extra key to the house, so they could get in and prepare.
They were waiting for him to get home, which they guessed would be in a couple of minutes. They had a banner and noisemakers ready to surprise him. El would use her powers to power up the robots he had in his room and they would lead him to the living room, where they would surprise him.
They started talking about different things, when Beth shushed them all as soon as she heard a car pulling up into the driveway. They quickly hid behind a wall as Dustin walked into the house. He went straight to his room and that's when Mike nodded at El, who closed her eyes shut. The noises of the robots filled his bedroom. Max glanced over at Beth and gave her a smile.
The sounds started to get closer, which meant the robots were moving towards the living room. Dustin was following them because Beth heard him mumble, "This is just a dream. You're dreaming." Beth let out a giggle, knowing Dustin was totally freaked out.
"Now." Mike whispered to El once Dustin reached the living room. She opened her eyes, as blood fell from her nose.
The gang followed Lucas into the living room and surround him as he holds up the sign that read, Welcome Home Dustin. Dustin was kneeling on the ground, examining one of the robots, trying to figure out what happened. He stood up as Max counted down with her fingers. Beth smiled and all at once, they blew their noisemakers. Dustin screamed and immediately turned around, holding a can of Farrah Fawcett spray before spraying it directly into Lucas's eyes as he screamed.
Beth immediately backed away, pulling Max and Ally with her. Lucas and Dustin both screamed as the spray went into Lucas's eyes. Ally put a hand over her mouth hoping Lucas would put his hand over his eyes. Dustin eventually came to his senses and lowered the can. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry! Holy shit!"
"Oh my god, are you okay?" Ally asked, rushing over to Lucas who was in a lot of pain.
"No!" Lucas answered, covering his eyes with his hands. "What the hell, man?"
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" Dustin apologized. Ally ushered Lucas out of the room to help clean his eyes out. "Thanks for the banner! It's nice!"
Beth stepped forward slowly as she held her hands up in surrender. Dustin looked at her and smiled stepping forward to hug her. Beth took a step back, "I'll only hug you, if you put that can far far away."
Dustin looked down at the can that was still in his hand. He chuckled lightly before setting it down on the coffee table. As soon as did, Beth stepped towards him and wrapped her arms around his neck as his arms rested on her abdomen. "Oh, I missed you so much."
"Missed you too." Dustin smiled.
"How was camp?" Beth asked pulling away from the hug.
Dustin's face lit up at the question. "Amazing! I have so many cool things to show you guys!" He glanced at Mike, Will, El, and Max. "Come on!"

Ally was helping Lucas get the burning sensation in his eyes from Dustin's, Farrah Fawcett spray.
"Ow, ow, ow. Ow." Lucas said under his breath but was heard by Ally.
"Still stings?" Ally asked as Lucas moved a towel away from his eyes.
"Still stings." Lucas murmured as his eyes blinked open. His eyes were bloodshot red, making Ally cringe and want to itch her own eyes. Using his fingers, he scratched his eyes. He eventually gave up and looked at Ally, which made him squint.
"Is that a new zit?" Lucas commented innocently at the girl.
Ally instantly tilted her head at the remark. With the gesture, Lucas knew he did something wrong. The girl sighed as she knew about the pointed out acne on her nose. It made her feel even worse that her cru....friend pointed out.
"I think your eyes need more cleaning." She quickly grabbed the back of Lucas's head and lowered it until his eyes were back under the flowing liquid. A scream escaped from his lips, as the pain flowed through him once again.

The five other teens followed Dustin into his room. He had two duffel bags sitting on his bed. He unzipped one and pulled out two weird looking objects. Beth furrowed her brows as Dustin held up a miniature windmill. "I call it...the Forever Clock. All right? Powered by wind. Very useful in the apocalypse."
He handed off the object to Will who examined it and smiled. Beth smiled at how cool it was that Dustin made this. "Can I see?" Will handed it to Beth, who looked at it carefully. She turned the handle, making the windmill part move and blow into Max's face. Which made the redhead laugh softly.
"Then, I give you the Slammer." Dustin announced, holding up a hammer with something on the end. He clicked a button which made the hammer start to vibrate. He handed it to Beth who examined it. "Pretty neat, huh? But this...this is my masterpiece."
Dustin picked up the duffel bag and set it by their feet. They all kneeled down as Dustin unzipped the bag, to reveal something inside. Beth stared at in confusion trying to figure out what it was. It looked like a bag full of random pieces of metal and cords, "I would like you to meet...Cerebro."
"What exactly are we looking at here?" Mike asked everyone's thoughts.
"An unassembled one of a kind battery powered radio tower." Dustin explained, a large smile on his face the entire time.
"So, it's a...ham radio." Will stated.
"The Cadillac of ham radios!" Dustin corrected. "This baby carries a crystal clear connection over vast distances. I'm talking North Pole to South. I can talk to my girlfriend whenever and wherever I choose."
At the word, girlfriend, the group of five all exchanged shocked looks, "Girlfriend?"
"Yeah her name's Suzie." Dustin smiled. Beth was still shocked by the news as she raised her eyebrows. "I met her at camp and I am going to talk to her with Cerebro."
Dustin zipped the bag up and threw it over his shoulder as he got up. The group all followed him as he walked out the room. "Wait, so her name is Suzie?"
"Suzie with a 'z'." Dustin nodded, as he made his through the house, heading towards the front door. "She's from Utah."
"Girls go to science camp?" Will asked.
"Suzie does. She's a genius." Dustin explained.
"Is she cute?" Mike asked.
"Looks don't matter, Micheal." Beth told him as she looked at Max.
"She's right. It's not about that looks, it's about who they are as a person." Max smiled at her girlfriend.
"Think Phoebe Cates, only hotter." Dustin answered Mike's question.
Beth pictured Phoebe Cates in her head. Phoebe Cates was pretty attractive, and if Dustin was telling the truth then that's not a lie.
"Damn." Beth muttered so no one heard. Max did hear her though and playfully rolled her eyes.
"What's going on? Where are you guys going?" Ally asked as Dustin opened the front door and the group started going out. Beth looked over to see Lucas's face under a faucet.
"Going to talk to Dustin's girlfriend." Will answered with a smile.
Just like the others did, Ally and Lucas has a surprised looks on their faces and asked, "Girlfriend?"

The hot sun was beaming on Beth as she climbed up the hill. Dustin insisted that they come all the way near the Nelson Farm to set up his radio. Everyone was carrying which made them sweat more as they things were extremely heavy, except for Mike and El. Mike and El were holding hands and strolling along the field while the rest were panting and sweating their asses off.
Beth stopped halfway to tie her hair up in a ponytail as parts stuck to her forehead. She felt her heart beating and breath getting faster as she walked more. Her stripped yellow shirt stuck to her skin and the poles she had been carrying were started to weigh down, making her lungs work harder.
"Aren't we high enough?" Lucas asked, voicing everyone's thoughts.
"Cerebro works best at a hundred meters." Dustin explained. He didn't seem tired at all but Beth saw from the sweat stains on him, that he was hot.
"You know, I'm pretty sure people in Utah have telephones." Max stated as she panted out the words. She was carrying a suitcase that had the electronics in it to contact Suzie.
"Yeah, but Suzie's Mormon."
"Oh shit." Lucas's eyes widened. "She doesn't have electricity?"
"No dingus, that's the Amish." Beth informed Lucas.
"What are Mormons?" Will asked.
"Super religious white people." Dustin started. "They have electricity and cars and stuff, but...since I'm not Mormon, her parents would never approve. It's all a bit...Shakespearean."
"Shakespearean?"
"Yeah, like Romeo and Juliet." Dustin smiled.
"Right." Max nodded.
"Star crossed lovers." Dustin continued.
"I got it." Max nodded, not amused making Beth laugh a bit and playfully roll her eyes.
"I bet she's cool." Ally smiled, trying to be positive since the group really wasn't. "I can't wait to see what she's like."
"Thanks Ally." Dustin looked over his shoulder and smiled at her.
"Hey guys!" Mike called out. The group all stopped and turned around. Beth raised her eyebrows when she saw Mike and El were still towards the bottom of the hill while the rest of them were halfway up. "This is fun and all, but, uh..."
Mike tapped his watch and El said, "I have to go home."
"We're almost there." Dustin argued.
"Sorry, man." Mike apologized. "Curfew."
"Good luck." El smiled before she and Mike walked back towards the field.
Dustin checked the time on his watch, "Curfew at four?"
"They're lying." Lucas stated as Ally nodded.
"It's been like this all summer." Will explained.
"It's romantic." Max shrugged, but she was clearly annoyed by the look on her face.
"It's rude." Beth rolled her eyes.
"It's gross."
"It's bullshit. I just got home." Dustin stated. Beth frowned and looked at Dustin who looked disappointed. She felt bad for him. Was she the only one who missed him? Dustin then formed a smile on his face, "Well, their loss, right? Onwards and upwards! Suzie awaits!"
Dustin turned around with a smile and continued heading up the mountain. Beth let out a sigh before her and Ally followed him while Max and Lucas groaned in annoyance, before following him as well. Beth continued up the hill, her feet sore with every step. Beth glanced over her shoulder, seeing Ally, Max, and Lucas both following but Will was still towards the bottom looking at Mike and El frolicking away, "Will, you coming?"
Dustin turned as Beth asked the question and spotted Will. He furrowed his brows before yelling, "Will, come on!"
Will turned around and ran up the rest of the hill, catching up with the group. Beth didn't assume anything but she knew something was wrong with him. But what?
€€€€€€€€€€€€
"Made it." Dustin stated as he set down the bag he was carrying.
"Yeah, only took five hours." Max nodded.
"Oh, it wasn't that bad, babe." Beth smiled at her girlfriend.
"Says the girl who plays soccer." Ally scoffed.
"Oh shut it." Beth said.
Ally stuck her tongue out at the other girl, making Beth playfully roll her eyes.
"Why couldn't we just play D&D?" Will sighed.
Beth set her bag down on the ground and stretched out her shoulder. She started to take a deep breath.
"I'm so thirsty." Lucas panted before unzipping his bag and grabbed their only bottle. He unscrewed the lid and started drinking down until nothing was left but droplets.
Lucas slowly brushed the outline of water on his lips but stopped mid-motion when he saw the look on Ally's face. "Did you seriously just drink all of our water?" She asked him as she crossed her arms over her chest.
Lucas's eyes widened and thought of the first thing that came to mind. Ally's mouth fell open as she watched the boy spit some water back into the brown water bottle. Not finding anything wrong with that, Lucas expended the jug to her with a charming but apologetic smile across his face. She stared at him for a moment before saying, "I'm good but thanks." She then walked over to Dustin.
Dustin made them get started right away. They all dumped out the materials they were using to build Cerebro and Dustin assigned each of them to put a part together. Beth knew it would be a big thing but she didn't realize how tall it would actually be when she built it. Beth, Ally, and Max shared expressions of shock and impressive looks as well.
"Pretty impressive, right?" Dustin asked once the group finally finished putting it all together and stood it up. "Now, you ready to meet my love?"
"Okay, sure."
"Yeah."
Dustin sat down on the grass and spoke into the microphone, "Suzie, this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over." Static was the only thing heard back. The group watched him with their arms crossed and eyebrows raised, hoping they didn't come all the way up here for absolutely nothing. "One sec. She's probably...she's still there." He clicked the button again. "Suzie...this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over."
"Are you sure she's-"
"Yes, yes, I'm sure she's there. It's just-" Dustin started, answering Beth. Lucas nodded. "You know, maybe, she's, like, busy or-" Lucas nodded once more. "It's around dinnertime...here." The rest of the group nodded, trying very hard not to get pissed. "Suzie, do you copy? This is Dustin. Over. Suzie, do you copy? This is Dustin. Over."
€€€€€€€€€€€€€
The sun had set and it was very dark. The six were still on the hill waiting for Dustin's "girlfriend" to answer.
Max and Beth were laying on the grass together, while Ally had her legs rested on Lucas's lap and Will had been sitting next to her. Dustin had been standing up still trying to contact his girl.
"...do you copy? This is Dustin. Over."
Static just like it has been for the past hour.
"Suzie! This is your Dustin. Do you copy? Over."
Nothing.
"Suzie..."
"Dustin, come on! She's not there!" Max finally yelled, getting tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. She just wanted to go home.
"She's there, all right?" Dustin disagreed. "She'll pick up."
"Maybe Cerebro doesn't work." Will guessed.
"Or maybe Suzie doesn't exist." Lucas suggested.
"She exists!" Dustin argued.
"She's a genius and she's hotter than Phoebe Cates?" Lucas repeated what Dustin had said about her earlier. Dustin nodded. "No girl is that perfect. Except for Ally..."
Ally slightly blushed at that statement, "Um...thanks. I guess."
"Of course Ally is perfect. And so is Beth and myself but Dustin is obviously lying." Max stated as she grabbed Beth's hand. Even after they started dating, Beth still always feels butterflies in her stomach from the girl.
Max got up from her spot which made Beth get up as well. Max held out her hand for Beth. "Come on, Snow White."
The two start walking off as Dustin yelled out, "Where are you going?"
"Home!" Max yelled.
"Beth, I thought you wanted to talk to her." Dustin asked making Beth turn around.
"Maybe tomorrow or something, I need to get home before my mom has a heart attack." Beth smiled before walking off with Max.
"I should get going to..." Lucas frowned before walking off following Beth and Max.
"Well...guess it's just us three." Dustin stated as Will started to stand up.
"Um..it's late. Sorry. Maybe tomorrow we can play D&D. Or something fun. Like we used to?" Will said.
"Yeah, sure." Dustin nodded and Ally can tell he was getting upset.
"Welcome home."
Ally turned to Dustin and smiled, "I'm glad you're home." Dustin smiled back.
When the party had first met Ally, Dustin and her quickly got along faster than the others. They just connected and found out they like the same things. They even both were the only ones who didn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend at the time.
"Thanks for staying." Dustin smiled.
"Are you kidding?" Ally laughed. "You're like my best friend, besides Beth. I can't wait to meet this girl. I believe she exists and hopefully I can meet her soon.
"Thanks Ally."
The radio started playing distorted sound making the two teens flick their heads to it.
Dustin dropped to the floor and picked up the radio, "Shit, shit. Suzie? Suzie, is that you?"
The voice on the radio started to speak Russian.
"Does Suzie maybe know Russian?" Ally asked and Dustin just looked with a confused look.
Dustin turned the volume up and they both listened carefully.
"Do you speak Russian?" Dustin asked the girl.
"I only know the words bitch, yes, and no." Ally sighed.
Ally and Dustin shared a look thinking the same thing. What the hell was going on?
