seven: learning the truth

November 3rd, 1984

Beth had woken up in her bed, not even remembering falling asleep. The last thing she remembered was watching Grease and eating popcorn and candy with her brother.

Last night, she had came out to her brother and to her surprise he accepted her making her feel happy. She also found it he was bi and asked many questions, like if he would ever a date a boy and so on. Brandon told her to shut up.

Beth got out of bed and brushed her teeth before finding some clothes to wear. She put on a pink t shirt and black jeans, she even cuffed the jeans as well at the bottom. She then slipped on her white sneakers and ran downstairs.

"Hello mother, father, brother." Beth greeted once she got downstairs.

"Hey honey. Sorry we weren't here when you got home yesterday. We would've said hi but you and brother were passed out on the couch." Beverly explained to her daughter.

"It's fine. Me and Brandon watched Grease last night." Beth told her mother as she took an apple from a basket and took a bite.

"Sounds fun." Benjamin said.

"It was definitely fun." Brandon said as he smiled as his sister, who smiled back.

"Well, I should get going I told Max I would go to the arcade with her." Beth told her parents.

"Okay have fun." Both her parents called out.

"Yeah...have fun." Brandon smirked making Beth throw a pencil at him.

"Ow!"

"What's going on?" Beverly asked her two children.

"Nothing!" They both said at the same time. Beth then stuck her tongue out at her brother before walking out the door.

Beth stood outside of the arcade waiting for Max, when she suddenly heard rock music playing. She looked to see Billy's car driving up with Max in it. Beth rolled her eyes seeing the older boy.

"If you're not out in an hour..." Billy started.

"Walking home. Yeah, yeah, I know." Max replied sarcastically making Beth snickered.

"Hey! Watch the attitude, shitbird." Billy said before driving away. Max stuck her middle finger up once he drove away.

"He's a real asshole isn't he?" Beth asked with a smirk. "You have no idea." Max replied before grabbing Beth's hand and rushing into the arcade.

They walked in to see a bunch of kids playing different games and when they got to Dig Dug, they were surprised. It said "OUT OF ORDER" making Beth groan. "Are you serious?"

"Sorry about that, Road Warriors." Keith, the guy who worked at the arcade said to the two girls.

"What happened?" Max asked as Beth realized she still didn't let go of her hand.

"Short circuit in the motherboard. A real bummer." Keith said making Beth roll her eyes. "But fret not. I got another machine up and running in the back."

The two girls followed Keith to the back as he went to unlock the door. "Hold these." He told Max as he handed her the bag of cheese puffs he was eating.

Max and Beth looked at each other confused before Keith opened the door revealing Lucas standing there. Beth rolled her eyes. They were tricked.

"You better get me that date, Sinclair." Keith told Lucas.

"I told I would." Lucas said.

"And keep things PG in here, all right?" Keith closed the door and left.

"What is this shit stalker?" Max asked Lucas.

"Sorry. I just needed a safe place." Lucas replied.

"A safe place to what? Be creepy?" Beth raised her eyebrow at him.

"Listen. I'm gonna tell you the truth about everything that happened last year." Lucas explained. "But if anyone finds out, you could be arrested. Possibly killed."

"Killed?"

"I need to know. Do you accept the risk?"

"Oh, my god! This...this is so stupid!" Beth exclaimed.

"Do you accept the risk?" Lucas asked louder this time.

"Yeah. Sure, fine."

"Whatever dingus."

"We accept the risk."

"Let's hear it." Max and Beth sat down and so did Lucas.

"Last year...Will didn't get lost in the woods. He got lost somewhere else." Lucas started to explain and boy was it intense.

Steve met up with Brandon, so he could help him get Nancy back. There was a lot of rumors at school saying the new boy has had almost 4 girlfriends, so Steve decided to ask him if had any advice on how to get a girl back. Brandon didn't know much since only one girl has even broken up with him but he decided to help out Steve.

"Hey, Stevie." Brandon said to him as he looked up to see the other boy. "You ready for some advice?"

"Yes. Yes, I am." He said to the Wright boy who sat down beside him.

"I need to know what happened first, so I can try to see what I can do." Brandon told him.

Steve sighed and started to explain, "At the Halloween party, Nancy got really drunk. I ended up spilling punch on her. She ran to the bathroom and I went after her. She told that our relationship was bullshit so I left. Then, she came to me in gym class and asked me why I didn't pick her up. She had totally forgotten about the night before and I asked her if she loved me and she couldn't say it. I just want to start over and try to get her back."

Brandon looked in shock. He didn't know how he could help get Nancy back for Steve. Something like that meant not getting back together. He did that to one of his girlfriends before and she still hasn't forgave him.

"Okay, I'll try and help. First you need to apologize-"

"For what?" Steve asked.

"Just listen to me!" Brandon said. "You need to get her some flowers and just her the truth."

"That's it?" Steve asked him.

"Yep." Brandon told him. "That's probably the best and only advice I can give you."

And just like that, they were at Nancy's house.

"Just do what I told you and things will be fine." Brandon told Steve.

"Okay." Steve said. "What about you?"

"I'll just duck so she can't see me." Brandon explained. "But when you come back, tell me how it goes."

Steve nodded and got out the car.

Brandon waited for a couple minutes but then he heard Steve talking to someone outside the car.

"Hey." He heard Steve say. "What the hell? Hey!"

"Nancy isn't home." Someone said to Steve.

"Where is she?" Steve asked the person.

"Doesn't matter-" The person said but then the door opened.

He looked to see a middle school boy with curly hair, brown hair, and brown eyes. He also wore a baseball cap on his head.

"Who the hell are you?" The boy asked.

"Steve's advice giver." Brandon told him. "I'm Brandon Wright."

"Dustin." The boy said before turning to Steve. "We have bigger problems than your love life. Do you still have that bat?"

"Bat?" Steve asked. "What bat?"

"The one with the nails?" Dustin said as he opened the door to the backseat.

"Why?" Steve asked.

"I'll explain it on the way." Dustin said.

"Now?"

"Now!"

"Hold up!" Brandon said. "Why would Steve have a bat with nails?"

Lucas had told Beth and Max everything that happened last year. Beth was pretty shocked by everything and didn't really believe it but she still felt bad.

"And that was the last time we ever saw her." Lucas said talking about his old friend, El. "After that, she was gone."

"I can't believe it's been that long. Feels like yesterday."

"Yeah. I mean, I bet." Max said. "Wow. It's crazy."

"I know." Lucas sighed.

"It's crazy but...I really liked it." Beth told him.

"Liked it?" Lucas asked her confused.

"Yeah. Well, I mean, we had a few issues." Beth replied.

"Issues?" Lucas asked.

"I felt it was a little derivative in parts." Max said.

"What are you talking about?" Lucas asked.

"I just wish it had a little more originality. That's all."

"You don't believe me?"

"Lucas, come on, seriously? How gullible do you think we are?" Max asked him.

"Why would I make this up?"

"I don't know. To impress me or something? Or you're just like, insane."

"I tell you all of this. I mean, top secret stuff. Risking my life!" Lucas exclaimed. "And this is how you react?"

"Risking your life?" Beth chuckled.

"Oh, so this funny to you?" Lucas asked her.

"Yeah, I mean...kind of funny. Stupid but funny." Max replied before her and Beth got up and started out the door.

"Where are you going?" Lucas asked.

"Story time's over, isn't it?" Max asked before her and Beth walked out the room.

They arrived outside seeing all the kids still playing. Max and Beth walked up to the "Dig Dug" game.

"What's wrong with you? I gave you what you wanted." Lucas told the girls.

"We wanted to be part of the group, not a part of some joke." Max told the boy.

"It's not a joke."

"You did a good job, okay? You can go tell the others we believed your lies if it gets you experience points or whatever." Beth sarcastically smiled.

Lucas sighed, "We have a lot of rules in our party, but the most important is, Friends don't lie. Never ever. No matter what."

"Is that right?" Max asked sarcastically. "Then how do you explain this?" She took the OUT OF ORDER flyer and handed it to Lucas.

"I had to do it. To protect you." Lucas sighed.

"To protect us from who exactly?" Beth asked. "The big bad government baddies from Hawkins Lab?"

"Lower your voice."

"Maybe it was to protect us from the Demogorgon from another dimension?" Max said.

"Max, Beth, I'm serous shut up!" Lucas warned them.

"Oh, no, no! I know what it was!" Max said and looked at Beth.

"It was Eleven. The girl wi-" Beth was silenced by Lucas putting his hand over her mouth.

"Stop talking. You're going to get us killed." Lucas said as he looked around cautiously. "Do you understand?"

"You're serious?" Beth asked as she took Lucas's hand away from her.

"I really wish I wasn't."

"Prove it." Max said.

"I can't." Lucas told her.

"So what? We're supposed to just trust you?" Max asked.

"Yes." Lucas said before an engine was heard. Max looked outside to see her brother waiting outside.

"Shit. I gotta go. Um..." Max said. "Don't follow me out. Okay?" Beth nodded at the words.

Max walked out the arcade and went into Billy's car. Beth saw that they started talking before Max looked back at both Lucas and Beth. The car then drove off.

"Do you believe me?" Lucas asked the brunette haired girl.

Beth sighed, "Listen, I understand that you went through stuff, and yes I believe Will did get lost and you met some girl. But I just don't believe that there's a thing called the Demogorgon and little girls with super powers. But yeah...I sort of believe you." Beth explained.

"Thanks." Lucas said.

"No problem, dude. I've got to go. My parents will probably wonder where I am." Beth said before getting on her bike.

"Uh, yeah." Lucas nodded.

"It was nice talking to you!" Beth shouted as she rode off on her bike.

"Yeah, you too." Lucas sighed.
