nineteen: the power outage

June 28, 1985
Summer

In the summertime, Hawkins was super hot. The temperatures went up, car windows were put down, cold drinks were made, clothes were lighter, and everybody was happier, especially Beth Wright. Beth loved the summertime, she did, especially since now she gets to spend it with her girlfriend Max Mayfield. Beth had asked Max to be her girlfriend during Christmas last year and the redhead said yes in excitement. The two girls have been dating for 6 months now and it's been real hectic. Both girls had been constantly bullied and harassed because of their relationship. And even called them awful names, but both girls had stood strong and didn't care what other people think. Especially, since they had their friends and family on their backs...well except Max.

Max never told her parents and brother about her relationship with Beth, afraid of what they'll do to her or her girlfriend. But she was happy and felt safe since Beth's parents and older brother accepted her relationship, so she felt she had someone. Even, Ally's best friend Beth supported them. Ally. Beth introduced the two girls to each other a week after Ally arrived to Hawkins. Max and Beth got along pretty well at first, but Ally seemed to have some sort of hatred towards Max. Like a jealousy towards her relationship with Beth. But the two lovebirds didn't seem to notice and just thought it had to do with something else. The party grew a liking to Ally and even told her about Eleven and the upside down since they trusted her. And boy was Ally intrigued by all of that.

But back on track, Beth has had a great summer so far. Although, Beth didn't get to see her brother that much ever since he got a job at Scoops Ahoy in Starcourt Mall, with Steve and a girl named Robin. But Beth loves it because he always gives her free ice cream even if he gets in trouble for it.

Beth had been sitting on her bay window in her bedroom. Tonight she was going to be going to the mall to see a movie, with the party minus Dustin who was at camp. It was currently about 3:00 in the afternoon and the group was going to meet up at about 8:00. Max and Beth decided to hang out beforehand so they can at least have nice time alone.

Beth had been drawing in her notebook when she heard a car drive up in the driveway. She recognized the car being Max's mother's car and immediately jumped up in excitement and ran down the stairs. Once she hit the bottom, the doorbell rang and Beth waited a few seconds before opening the door. She was met with Max, who smiled at her and hugged her. The redhead waved bye to her mother, before closed the door and made sure Susan was gone.

Beth then turned to Max, who had pressed her lips onto Beth's before pulling away to face a blushing Beth. Max smiled at that and blushed as well.

"How's my amazing princess Snow White doing?" Max asked as she wrapped her arms around Beth's neck.

"Amazing, now that Little Red is here." Beth joked making Max hit her in the shoulder lightly. Beth was taller than Max, so she usually messed her with by mocking her height.

"Please do not do anything PDA right now." Beverly commented as she took her coffee out the machine.

"Mom!" Beth yelled.

"I'm just saying. I'm drinking right now...so." Bev took a sip of her coffee. Beth playfully rolled her eyes at her mom before, she pulled Max upstairs to her room. Where all they did was talk and make out. Man, Beth loved that girl.

Max and Beth had arrived at the mall where they met Lucas, Ally, and Will. The movie started at 8 and it was now 8:10 and Mike had still not shown up. Everyone was really annoyed, because they wanted to see the previews but they couldn't go in without Mike.

They waited outside the entrance to the mall as they waited for Mike who definitely was making out with Eleven and trying not to get Hopper mad. Ever since the two got together, they've been inseparable and it was cute, but the party found it annoying, since he spent more time with her then them.

Beth sighed in relief when Mike pulled up, slamming down the brakes on his bike making the tires squeak on the pavement. Lucas walked up to him with his arms crossed, "You're late."

"Sorry!" Mike apologized, quickly putting his bike in the bike rack.

"Again." Lucas added as this was not first time Mike was late to the movies.

"We're gonna miss the opening!" Will exclaimed.

"Yeah, if you keep whining about it." Mike stated, which made Beth roll her eyes. "Let's go!"

"If you guys keep whining about it. Nyeh. Nyeh. Nyeh." Lucas mocked.

"If you've gotten here on time, we wouldn't be whining in the first place." Ally told him as they all walked through the doors of the mall.

"Let me guess. You were busy." Lucas started he started to make kissing noises which made Mike roll his eyes. They all knew that was exactly what Mike was doing.

"Oh, yeah, real mature, Lucas." Mike said.

"Oh, El, I wish we could make out forever, and never hang out with any of our friends." Beth teased as Will Lucas giggled beside her.

"Beth, stop." Ally ordered.

"Will and Lucas think it's funny." Beth pointed out, gesturing to their smiles.

"Because it is." Will admitted.

"Yeah, it's so funny that I want to spend romantic time with my girlfriend." Mike exclaimed, sarcasm rolling on his tongue.

"I'm spending some romantic time with my girl." Beth stated as she put her arm around Max's shoulder. Ally watched as she did and how Max leaned into her. She hated that she was jealous. She spent days and months hoping to find Beth again and tell her how she felt, but when she finally found her she fell in love with someone else.

The gang rushed into Scoops Ahoy which was packed with people. They went up to the counter where Robin was standing and Mike started tapping the bell over and over again. Robin, who had knew the group well and what they were there, yelled out, "Hey dinguses, your children are here!"

Steve opened the sliding doors behind Robin with Brandon beside him. He sighed, "Again? Seriously?"

"You told me you weren't coming today, Beth." Brandon commented making Beth smirk.

"I lied." She said making him roll his eyes before Mike dinged the bell again which made Steve groan. He slammed the sliding doors close.

"Your pathetic, Steve. Just say no." Brandon said, before her turned to Beth who gave him a soft smile making him sigh. "Let's just go."

They followed Steve and Brandon to the backroom. He let them out the door back door that led into the back hallways of the mall. If they followed the corridor, it would lead them straight to the theater without having to pay for tickets. They had been using this since Steve and Brandon got hired.

The two boys ushered them into the hallway and Steve said, "We can't keep doing this for you guys, I swear if anybody hears about this-"

"We're dead!" They all yelled back, finishing his sentence. They heard him say it a thousand times already. He told them same exact sentence every time they used the back hallways which was almost all the time. They made their way down the hallway and when they reached the door, Mike peered in, making sure the coast was clear.

"All clear." He stated before walking out. The group followed him and made their way into the theater that was showing Day of the Dead.

They all shuffled in and Beth groaned once she realized they missed the opening previews. Due to how late they were, the group was unable to sit all together. Mike, Will, and Ally sat in one of the middle rows beside each other while Max, Beth, and Lucas sat together just below them to the left.

"See, Lucas? We made it." Mike whispered to Lucas.

"We missed the previews." Lucas replied.

"Yeah, they're the best part." Beth agreed, as a frown formed on her face.

Max placed her hand on Beth's knee, "Hey at least we made it."

Beth nodded and smiled, which made Max smile before she turned to the movie. Ally glanced over at them and frowned. She saw them laughing and being all cute and she couldn't help but feel jealousy in her blood. She was so distracted by them, that she didn't see the movie start. When she looked at the screen, the movie flashed off and the theater went dark. Everyone groaned in annoyance. The projector was acting up once again and Beth groaned. First the previews now this!

A few minutes passed until the movie went back on. Beth smiled and rested her head on Max's shoulder while everyone cheered. Lucas passed her a bar of chocolate and she thanked him quietly before she turned back to the movie, with her head on Max. She just hoped that weird power outage wouldn't come back until after the movie.
