eight: sexual electricity

November 4th, 1984

"Okay, so you're telling me that last year, a D&D character came to life, kidnapped your best friend. You met a girl with telekinesis that stopped the D&D character, then Will threw up a little creature that you found in the trash. This creature is from...what's it called again?" Brandon asked trying to get everything straight in his head.

"Upside Down." Dustin told him.

"This creature from the Upside Down, you kept it and now we're trying to find it." He finished. Dustin nodded slowly before there was a silent as Hammer To Fall played on the stereo.

"Wait a sec." Steve said breaking the silence. "How big?"

"First it was like that." Dustin said, showing the length with his fingers than his hands, "Now he's like this."

"I swear to God, man, it's just a little lizard, okay?" Steve tells Dustin.

"I agree, that story you told me sounds pretty fake." Brandon butted in.

"It's not fake!" Steve and Dustin both said in unison.

Brandon sighed and said, "Then why don't you believe Dustin? Steve?"

Steve didn't answer the question and Dustin said, "It's not a lizard."

"How do you know?" Steve asked.

"How do I know if it's not?" Dustin said.

"How do you know it's not just a lizard?" Brandon said clarifying the question.

Dustin sighed, "Because his face opened up and he ate my cat."

That shut Brandon and Steve up fast. Soon, they turned into Dustin's driveway. They got out the car and Steve opened the trunk. Steve threw the keys at Dustin, who caught them. Brandon looked inside the trunk to see a bat with nails on it.

Steve grabbed it, looked at the two boys then closed the trunk.

Dustin showed them to the cellar where this creature was supposed to be. Dustin handed Steve a flashlight.

Steve stood in front of the cellar, tapped the door with the bat and said, "I don't hear shit."

"He's in there." Dustin assured.

Steve lightly tapped the cellar door again. No noise. There was no way that any of this was real. After a couple of seconds, Steve smashed the bat against the door. Still no noise.

Steve turned to Dustin, flashing the flashlight right in his face and said, "All right, listen, kid. I swear, if this is some sort of Halloween prank, you're dead."

"It's not." Dustin said.

"All right?"

"It's not a prank." Dustin said, "Get out of my face."

"I'm confused." Brandon butted in. "Is this a prank on me or something? Something to scare the new kid? Cause that would be really cold."

"What happened last year was real." Steve said. "But there's no way it's happening again."

"Well it is." Dustin murmured.

Steve turned to Dustin and said, "You got a key for this thing?"

Dustin gave him the key and took the flashlight. Steve unlocked the chain then opened the door and nothing happened.

Dustin flashed the flashlight inside but then Steve took the flashlight and said, "Let me see that."

They waited a couple of seconds then Dustin said, "He must be further down there. Me and this boy will stay up here in case he tries to escape."

"My name is Brandon." He said to Dustin.

Steve sighed, stood up then slowly started down the stairs.

"Wait, are you Beth's brother?" Dustin asked him when Steve was out of view.

"Yep." Brandon said. "Your friends with her?"

"Yep." Dustin said, waited a couple of seconds then said, "Steve?"

No answer.

"Steve, what's going on down there?" Brandon said looking down the dark stairs that he could barely see.

Suddenly, there was a bright light in his eyes. Him and Dustin backed away then looked to see that it was just Steve shining the flashlight at them.

"Get down here." Steve said to us with a weird look on his face.

Brandon and Dustin gave each other a look then started down the stairs slowly. When they got to the bottom, Steve showed them some really gross white slime.

"Oh shit." Dustin cursed. Then Brandon realized that what Steve was showing them was skin. "Oh shit."

Steve pointed his flashlight over at some more slime but Brandon looked to see a hole.

"No way." He murmured as they looked inside the hole to see whatever was in here had dug it's way out.

After a couple of minutes, Steve and Dustin decided that they need to find the creature that Dustin had called Dart.

"I'll bring some meat and we will make a trail to the junk." Dustin said to Steve.

Steve and Dustin turned to Brandon suddenly and Steve said, "Brandon, you're coming with us."

"What?" Brandon said as he crossed his arms over his chest. "I don't believe you guys. About anything. I'm not coming with you."

Dustin rolled his eyes as Steve said, "We need you to come, we need all the help we can get."

"This is a joke." Brandon said. "You expect me to believe that there is this parallel dimension where they are creatures from D&D?"

"If you come with us, you will see that we are telling the truth." Steve told him.

He thought about his for a second, he didn't believe them at all. There was no way that any of this was true. But some part of him thought that he should go because if they made a fool of themselves, he would want to be there.

"Fine." He said. "I'll go."

Beth sat in her room reading Carrie by Stephen King, when there was a sudden knock at her front door.

"Honey, could you get that please!" Beverly shouted from downstairs. Beth hurried down the stairs and to the front door. She opened to see Lucas and Max.

Her eyes widened and she pushed them out the door before closing it.

"What are you doing here?" Beth asked them both.

"He's gonna show us proof about what he told us." Max sarcastically said.

"Really?" Beth raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, come with me and I'll show you." Lucas told her and she sighed before telling them to wait a minute before going back inside and closing the door. She turned to see her parents standing there.

"Hi." She awkwardly said.

"Who were you talking to?" Benjamin asked.

"Um...Mormons. They talk a lot." Beth replied before running upstairs. She grabbed some stuff from her bedroom before going back downstairs and going out the back door.

She grabbed her bike before she met Lucas and Max in the front. "This better be some good ass proof, buddy."

Max got on the back of Lucas's bike and Beth got on hers before they rode off.

Brandon, Steve, and Dustin were walking down the old railroad tracks, throwing raw meat on the ground.

"All right." Steve said after Dustin explained more about what happened with Dart, "so let me get this straight. You kept something you knew was probably dangerous in order to impress a girl who...who you just met?"

"All right, that's grossly oversimplifying things." Dustin said to Steve.

"I mean, why would a girl like some nasty slug anyway?" Steve asked.

"More importantly, who is this girl?" Brandon asked butting into their conversation again.

"I'm not answering that question." Dustin said to him then turned to Steve and said. "An inter dimensional slug? Because it's awesome."

"Well, even if she thought it was cool, which she didn't, I...I just...I don't. I just feel like you're trying way to hard." Steve explained to Dustin.

"Well, not everyone can have your perfect hair, all right?" Dustin said.

"It's not about the hair." Brandon said to Dustin.

"The key with girls is just...just acting like you don't care."

"Oh my god." Brandon murmured to himself.

"Even if you do?" Dustin asked, starting to become interested.

"Yeah, exactly." Steve said. "It drives them nuts."

"Then what?"

"You just wait until, uh...until you feel it." Steve  said.

"Feel what?" Dustin asked.

"It's like before it's gonna storm, you know? You can't see it, but you can feel it, like this,  uh...electricity, you know?" Steve explained.

"Oh, like in the electromagnetic field when the clouds in the atmosphere-" Dustin said but Steve interrupted him.

"No, no, no, no, no." Steve said. "Like a...like a sexual electricity."

"Oh."

"Gross." Brandon murmured.

"You feel that and then you make your move."

"So that's when you kiss her?" Dustin asked.

"No, whoa, whoa. Slow down." Steve said.

"A little too quick Romeo." Brandon said.

"Sorry."

"Sure, okay, some girls, yeah, they want you to be aggressive." Steve explained. "You know, strong, hot and heavy, like a...I don't know, like a lion. But others, you gotta be slow, you gotta be stealthy like a...like a ninja."

"What type is Nancy?" Dustin asked.

"Nancy's different. She's different than the other girls."

"Yeah, she seems pretty special, I guess." Dustin said.

"Yeah, yeah she is."

"Do you have any advice for me Brandon?"

"Sure because Steve's advice wasn't very good." He said.

Steve gave a long look then said, "Hey, I'm the king of romance. I've been with a lot of girls in my life."

"And how long have all of those relationships lasted?" Brandon asked. "And who came to me when they needed advice about Nancy?"

"Shut up." Steve murmured.

"Dustin, all you have to do is be yourself and the girls will like you for who you are." Brandon told Dustin, "You need to find someone that you like a lot. How Steve likes Nancy. You like a girl because she's not any other girl. But one thing is for sure, you have to be honest and DON'T pretend like you don't care."

"This girl is special." Dustin said to Brandon and Steve. "It's just, like, something about her."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Steve said as she stopped walking and looked at Dustin. "Hey, hey, hey."

"What?"

"You're not falling in love with this girl, are you?" Steve asked.

Dustin paused then said, "Uh, no. No."

"Okay, good. Don't."

"I won't."

"She's only gonna break your heart, and you're way to young for that shit." Steve told him.

"He can fall in love if he wants." Brandon told Steve. "But he does have a point, girls your age are kinda stupid."

There was a couple minutes of silence before Steve said, "Faberge."

"What?" Brandon and Dustin asked at the same time.

Steve pointed at his hair and said, "It's Faberge Organics. Use the shampoo and conditioner, and when your hair's damp...it's not wet, okay? When it's damp."

"Damp."

"You do four puffs of the Farrah Fawcett spray." Steve finished.

Brandon started laughing. "Farrah Fawcett, are you serious?"

"Yeah, Farrah Fawcett." Steve said. "You tell anyone I just told you that and your ass is grass. You're dead, Henderson, Wright. Do you understand?"

"Yup." They both said.

Steve gave a small laugh then said, "Okay."

"Farrah Fawcett, really?" Dustin asked.

"I mean, she's hot." Steve commented.

"Yeah."

"No." Brandon murmured but the two other boys heard him.

"What?"

"You don't think she's hot?" Steve asked.

"Nah, Molly Ringwald is hotter." Brandon commented.

There was a silence before Steve said, "Yeah, you're definitely right. She is hot."

"Right?!"
