━━Savreen still felt like she was slowly freezing, but in comparison to how she felt the moment she woke back up, it was better. Gradually, she was starting to feel warmer. The fire was reaching through her shoes to her damp socks and Leo's natural body heat beside her very much helped. Savreen had shuffled closer to him without thinking, watching him cook with a little smile on her face. She felt better after her conversation with them━she felt lighter, the weight of her problems lifting enough to feel like she shared them with her best friends. They knew her horrible truth, and yet they made no move to throw her away, to tell her to leave. Savreen wasn't used to that, and it sort of made her want to cry with happiness.

Leo noticed her smiling and arched an amused brow. Savreen blushed and hunched up her shoulders, giving him a side look as she pulled back the fingers itching out to steal the food he was simmering. He narrowed his eyes back and sent her a hand-gesture that said: I'm watching you

Savreen grinned. She tried to steal her portion of food again but her best friend caught her hand this time, holding it up and away with a snort of laughter escaping through his nose. She giggled quietly, trying to pull back but he held it in a surprisingly strong grip so he could tap onto her wrist: You warm enough

Your hand is very warm, she replied. So is your food

"Don't steal from the Chef," Leo told her in a low mutter, chuckling. "Chica, you're better than this."

She didn't say anything. Savreen just tilted up her head, challenging him to which Leo copied her, jutting out his chin comedically that made her only snort and lean into his shoulder. Savreen saw Piper share an incredulous glance with Jason as if to say, what are they talking about

Savreen stayed sitting shoulder-to-shoulder beside her best friend as he handed out the food. She happily took hers, welcoming the warmth it and Leo brought. The two of them continued to have their soft out-of-context whispers switching from Morse Code to words.

You sure you're warm? Leo asked her again, tapping her arm as she ate away at her food. Savreen nodded, though she had a feeling he was asking her more. She saw the look in his eyes; gentle brown filled with concern.

It made her purse her lips and with a subtle glance at Piper, Jason and Coach, she stopped eating for the moment to reach down and take his hand. Leo's brows furrowed, recognising the move before she even said anything.

The dream made me see Dadi's death all over again, she tapped softly━as if scared that even if they spoke a code amongst themselves neither of their other friends knew, they'd still hear.

Leo's brows lifted. His shoulders sagged. "Mi vida..." he whispered, just for her. Sav's brief happiness faltered as she remembered and she clung onto his hand tighter, trying to push the images out of her head.

Sav felt comfortable telling him, because she knew Leo understood. And he didn't try to make it all better, but instead just held onto her hand, or let her set her head against his shoulder ontop of the roof at the Wilderness School. Leo was energetic, and he was talkative, but when Savreen needed it the most, he was soft and caring━and the best listener out of anyone she's met. She wished he knew that. For even if she told him, he'd scoff and shake his head and make some joke against himself. All Leo did was become a villain to himself.

She wondered whether she was his guardian angel like he was to her.

"I don't know what it means," she whispered, too, meeting his gaze that always flickered like embers. "I don't understand what she wants me to do."

Leo shook his head, "Tía never makes sense. One time, she tried to put me in fire."

Sav tilted her head, watching her best friend curiously. Why do you still call her auntie? She asked him with a tap onto his palm. Leo blinked, as if taken aback by her question━like he's never even asked himself that before. Like you said, she put you in fire. She's thrown you onto this quest and now a prophecy.

"I don't know," he answered truthfully. "She wasn't even my aunt, she was just my babysitter ..." Leo shrugged, gaze suddenly distant. "Maybe it's because in a way, she's better than my real aunt. She never call me a niño demonio, so..."

"You're not that," Sav assured him. "You were never that."

Aunt Rosa knew something wasn't right, Leo traced the lines of her palm as he replied in Morse Code.

"I know who you are," said Savreen and Leo's brows furrowed, curious.

      "What would that be?"

You're home, a sudden part of Sav wanted to say, and it took her breath away for a moment. But she stopped herself and decided to tap with a tender touch: You're my angel. You always protect me. "And you always find your way back," she added, smiling. Leo chuckled softly, head ducking down but she saw the grateful look upon his face that made him seem to warm up━even by the touch she felt from her fingers.

I'll be there for you through this, too, then added Leo, and Sav knew what he meant about. Her brows knitted together, emotional with gratitude. She squeezed his hand.

Finally, Leo handed out the food. Savreen happily took hers, scoffing it down with little restraint━she was starving. On her other side with Piper still warming up in his arms, Jason looked as though he was trying very hard not to laugh. Sav gasped at him and wanted to chuck some of her lettuce, but then decided it was too precious to her stomach to waste. She settled for reaching out to try and smack his knee but the blonde quickly pulled them up, causing for Piper to let out a short squeal at the sudden movement. Leo laughed at them, and Coach shook his head━though Savreen believed that was because he was deciding whether to eat the food or the cutlery.

It was crazy. Here they were, shivering and hiding away from a terrible storm after almost dying again, and were laughing and joking━like they were just teenagers on a weekend out with their closest friends. Savreen liked to imagine it was that, and it made her smile as she ate, finally letting herself focus on what she had beside her right now other than the conversation she had in that horrible place.

But in the end, Piper's smile faded away. She finished her vegetarian meal, starting to play with her fingers. "Guys," she spoke up abrutly. Their chuckles and conversation faded, focusing on her. "We ... we need to talk." Piper sat up so she could face them all. "I don't want to hide anything from you guys any more."

Savreen lowered her burger, concerned. No one spoke━attentive. She could see how sick her friend looked. Piper clenched her jaw, taking a deep breath as if gaining courage. "Three nights before the Grand Canyon trip," she began, "I had a dream vision━a giant, telling me my father had been taken hostage. He told me I ... I had to cooperate or ..." she choked up, "... or my dad would be killed."

     The flames crackled.

Finally, Jason said, "Enceladus? You mentioned that name before."

Coach Hedge whistled. "Big giant. Breathes fire. Not somebody I'd want barbecuing my daddy goat."

"Coach," hissed Savreen at his lack of sensitivity.

Jason also gave him his best shut up look. "Piper, go on. What happened next?"

"I━I tried to reach my dad, but all I got was his personal assistant, and she told me not to worry."

"Jane?" remembered Leo. "Didn't Medea say something about controlling her?"

    Savreen remembered that, too.

Piper nodded. She was tearful. "To get my dad back, I had to sabotage this quest. I didn't realise it would be the four of us. Then, after we started the quest, Enceladus sent me another warning: he told me he wanted you three dead. He wants me to lead you to a mountain. I don't know exactly which one, but it's in the Bay Area━I could see the Golden Gate Bridge from the summit. I have to be there by noon on the solstice, tomorrow. An exchange."

Ashamed, she couldn't meet their eyes. Savreen's shoulders slumped. She wasn't the only one holding guilt━Piper had been this entire time, too. It made her stand up and step around the fire. Piper glanced up, confused as Savreen sat down beside her and wrapped her arms around her. She settled her head on her shoulder, holding her tight. Instantly, she felt Piper slouch, eyes closed as she shed a few tears.

Jason joined, wrapping a large arm around the two of them, "Gods, Piper. I'm so sorry."

Leo threw his burger aside━food no longer mattered. "No kidding!" he stated before joining, too, situating himself behind and hugging them all. He set his chin on the top of Piper's head. "You've been carrying this around for a week, chica? Piper, we could help you."

Piper glared at them through her tears. "Why don't you yell at me or something? I was ordered to kill you!"

"And I have a cursed necklace that brings tragedy," said Savreen. "Leo has a dangerous power that he was scared would hurt us all. Jason doesn't remember really anything of where he used to be and has those strange markings on his arm. And Coach? Well ... he's Coach."

"We're all fucking delinquents," grinned Leo. "But like what Jason said to Sav, we're in this together, Pipes. You're stuck with us."

"Yeah," agreed Jason. He smiled at Piper. "You've saved us all on this quest. I'd put my life in your hands any day."

"You don't get it!" sobbed Piper. "I've probably just killed my dad, telling you this."

"I doubt it," Coach Hedge belched. He was eating his tofu burger folded inside the paper plate, deciding to eat both the food and the cutlery. "Giant hasn't got what he wants yet, so he still needs your dad for leverage. He'll wait until the deadline passes, see if you show up. He wants you to divert the quest to this mountain, right?"

     Piper nodded, uncertain.

"So that means Hera is being kept somewhere else," reasoned the satyr. "And she has to be saved by the same day. So, you have to choose━rescue your dad, or rescue Hera. If you go after Hera, then Enceladus takes care of your dad. Besides, Enceladus would never let you go even if you cooperated. You're obviously one of the ten in the Great Prophecy."

Piper frowned to herself. She leaned in closer to Sav, clutching her arm around her for support like a lifeline. Her next words were quiet, miserable and full of grief. "So, we have no choice .... we have to save Hera, or the giant king gets unleashed. That's our quest. The world depends on it. And Enceladus seems to have ways of watching me. He isn't stupid. He'll know if we change course and go the wrong way. He'll kill my dad."

"He's not going to kill your dad," said Leo strongly. He pulled his chin off Piper's hair to stick his head in between hers and Jason's so he could meet her gaze. "We'll save him."

"We don't have time!" cried Piper, her arm gripping Sav's arm even tighter. "Besides, it's a trap."

"We're your friends, beauty queen," said Leo, determined. "We're not going to let your dad die, okay? We just gotta figure out a plan."

"Yeah," nodded Savreen. "We'll save your dad and free Hera. Who cares what this giant says."

"Would help if we knew where this mountain was," grumbled Coach Hedge. "Maybe Aeolus can tell you that. The Bay Area has a bad reputation for demigods. Old home of the Titans, Mount Othrys, sits over Mount Tam, where Atlas holds up the sky. I hope that's not the mountain you saw━been there, done that. Not that I was there," he added, grumpy. He scoffed down the rest of his tofu-plate taco.

"I don't think so ..." murmured Piper thoughtfully. "This was inland."

Jason frowned at the fire, like he was trying to desperately remember something. A ghostly shadow casted over the scar on his lip. "Bad repuation ... that doesn't seem right. The Bay Area ..."

"You think you've been there?" asked Sav.

"I  ..." he looked like he was almost on the edge of a break through. Then, he lost it, and anguish returned to his eyes. Jason clenched his eyes shut for a second. "I don't know. Hedge, what happened to Mount Othrys?"

"Well, Kronos built a new palace there last summer. Big nasty place, was going to be the headquarters for his new kingdom and all. Weren't any battles there, though. Kronos marched on Manhattan, tried to take Olympus. If I remember right, he left some other Titans in charge of his palace, but after Kronos got defeated in Manhattan, the whole place just crumbled on its own."

     "No."

Savreen and the others all blinked, startled by Jason's ferocity in his answer. Even he seemed surprised.

"What do you mean, 'no'?" asked Leo.

"That's not what happened," said Jason. "I━" he tensed. His head jolted towards the cave entrance. "Did you hear that?"

For a second, there was nothing. But then Savreen heard it: howls peircing into the night.

✿✼:*゚:༅。.。༅:*・゚゚・⭑

━━"Wolves," breathed Piper, on edge. Their momentous group hug was over. "They sound close."

Jason rose and summoned his sword━gold struck like sunlight into the dark, making Savreen shield her eyes as she joined him with Leo and Coach at her side. She clenched her fingers, pressing against her ring and activating her chakram. It sprung out with a deadly, sharp glint. Piper tried to get up, but she soon stumbled.

"Stay there," Jason told her. "We'll protect you."

Piper didn't seem to like that, at all. But her anger faltered and was replaced with fear as━just outside the firelight at the entrance of the cave━a pair of red eyes glowered in the dark.

Savreen shuffled back uncertainly, feeling her heart rise up into her throat as more wolves edged into the glow of the flames. Black beasts bigger than Great Danes with ice and snow caked on their fur. Fangs gleaming, eyes glowing, claws donning their paws━but the worst thing was the intellgience that glinted within the red of their gazes; it was far too close to the eyes of a human, and it made Sav shiver in her boots. The wolf in the front as almost as tall as a horse, his mouth stained as if he had just made a fresh kill.

Even stuck behind them, Piper pulled her dagger out of its sheath.

Savreen was thinking of a way to somehow calm the wolves down with her strange power of harmony, but then Jason stepped forward and said something to them in Latin. Instantly, the dead language made the wild animals squirm. The alpha wolf curled his lip as the fur stood up along his spine. One of his lieutenants tried to advance, but the alpha snapped at his ear. Then, all the wolves backed into the dark.

"Dude," Leo whispered, fixing his grip on his hammer with sweaty palms, "I gotta study Latin. What'd you say, Jason?"

Hedge cursed, "Whatever it was, it wasn't enough. Look."

He was right. The wolves were coming back, but the alpha wolf wasn't with them. They didn't attack. They waited━at least a dozen now, in a rough semicircle just outside the firelight, blocking the cave exit.

Coach hefted up his club. "Here's the plan. I'll kil them all, and you guys escape."

Piper held up her hands, dubious, "Coach, they'll rip you apart."

    "Nah, I'm good."

     "Good with dying?"

Out of the storm emerged the silhouette of a man. He waded through the wolf pack. Savreen did her best to stand her ground, even though her mind screamed for her to hide.

"Stick together," ordered Jason as if sensing her fear. "They respect a pack. And Hedge, no crazy stuff. We're not leaving you or anyone else behind."

The wolves parted, letting the man step into the light like some king. He looked nothing like one. His hair was ragged and greasy, the colour of ash topped with a crown of what looked like finger bones. His robes were tattered fur━wolves, rabbit, raccoon, deer and several others, Savreen was sure. They weren't cured, and from the smell, were far from being fresh. He was tall and lithe, like a distance runner, but his face was horrendous━pale skin pulled tight across his skull with teeth sharpened like fangs. His eyes were bright red like his wolves'━fixed upon Jason with absolute loathing.

     "Ecce," he sneered, "filli Romani."

"Speak English, wolf man!" bellowed Hedge.

The wolf man snarled. "Tell your faun to mind his tongue, son of Rome. Or he'll be my first snack."

Faun, Savreen remembered. The Roman word for satyr. Hedge had said that back on the Grand Canyon bridge. Yet again, Roman followed Jason around like a ghostly shadow.

The leader of the pack studied their little group. His nose twitched. "So, it's true," he mused. "A child of Aphrodite. A son of Hephaestus. A daughter of Harmonia. A faun. And a child of Rome, of Lord Jupiter, no less. All together, without killing each other. How interesting..."

"You were told about us?" demanded Jason. "By whom?"

(Even in battle, Jason managed to hold correct grammar, and if this wasn't some dire situation, Savreen might've been quite amused).

The man bared his teeth━Savreen wasn't quite sure whether he was laughing, or challenging them. "Oh, we've been patrolling for you all across the West, demigod, hoping we'd be the first to find you. The giant king will reward me well when he rises. I am Lycaon, king of the wolves. And my pack is hungry."

The wolves snarled in the darkness to prove his point.

Beside Sav, she caught a quick glimpse of Leo rising his hammer and slip something else from his tool belt━a glass bottle ful of clear liquid. She prayed he knew something about this she didn't.

Lycaon glared at Jason's sword. He moved to each side as if looking for an opening, but Jason's blade moved with him.

"Leave," ordered Jason. He was not in the mood to play games. "There's no food for you here."

"Unless you want tofu burgers," offered Leo.

The Wolf King bared his fangs. Savreen will take that as a no to tofu. "If I had my way," he said, "I'd kill you first, son of Jupiter. Your father made me what I am. I was the powerful mortal king of Arcadia, with fifty fine sons, and Zeus slew them all with his lightning bolts."

"Fifty?" echoed Savreen while Coach barked out a: "Ha! For good reason!"

Jason glanced over his shoulder. "Coach, you know this clown?"

"I do," answered Piper instead. Eyes flashing with horrible recognition. "Lycaon invited Zeus to dinner. But the king wasn't sure it was really Zeus. So, to test his powers, Lycaon tried to feed him human flesh. Zeus got outraged━"

     "And killed my sons!"

"So, Zeus turned him into a wolf," went on Piper, ignoring him. "They call ... they call werewolves lycanthropes, named after him, the first werewolf."

"Man, okay," muttered Leo, "this dude is nothing like Remus Lupin in Harry Potter."

"Probably a good thing," added Sav. "I don't want my perspective of Lupin to be ruined forever."

"The king of wolves," Coach Hedge finished. "An immortal, smelly, vicious mutt."

Lycaon growled. "I will tear you apart, faun!"

"Oh, you want some goat, buddy? 'Cause I'll give you goat━!"

"Stop it," snapped Jason. His words exploded with a terrifying, thundering authority that made even Coach and Lyacon fall silent. Savreen felt as though he knew how to lead armies with that voice. "Lyacon, you said you wanted to kill me first, but...?"

"Sadly, Child of Rome, you are spoken for. Since this one━" he waggled a clawed-finger at Piper, "━has failed to kill you, you are to be delivered alive to the Wolf House. One of my compatriots has asked for the honour of killing you herself."

     "Who?"

The wolf king snickered. "Oh, a great admire of yours. Apparently, you made quite the impression on her. She will take care of you soon enough, and I really cannot complain. Spilling your blood at the Wolf House should mark my new territory quite well. Lupa will think twice about challenging my pack."

At the mention of someone wanting to kill Jason made Savreen stiffen. She held out her weapon, glowering. Behind her, Piper struggled to her feet, looking murderous. "You're going to leave, now," she snarled, "before we destroy you."

She was shivering in her blankets, pale and sweaty and barely able to stand. But Savreen thought her friend was very brave, even in the face of Lycaon's laughter. "A brave try, girl. I admire that. Perhaps I'll make your end quick. Only the son of Jupiter is needed alive. The rest of you, I'm afraid, are dinner."

Savreen shared a quick glance with Leo, feeling a brief dread of ... this might be it

Jason surged forward, "You're not killing anyone, wolf man. Not without going through me."

Lycaon howled and extended his claws. Jason yelled and slashed his sword right at him. It should have been a mortal blow, but his golden sword passed straight through as if the king wasn't even there.

The werewolf laughed. "Gold, bronze, steel━none of these are any good against my wolves, son of Jupiter."

"What about silver?" Savreen suggested, growing desperate. "Aren't werewolves hurt by silver?!"

"We don't have any silver!" said Jason.

Wolves leapt towards them. Hedge bellowed and charged. but Leo struck first. In a flash, he threw his glass bottle and it shattered onto the ground, splattering liquid all over the wolves. A horrible smell spiked in Sav's nose━the smell of gasoline. Not wasting a second, Leo's hand sparked with fire and he jetted it outwards at the puddle. Sav gasped and covered her face as the fire exploded out with a burst of white-hot heat, spreading along in a searing line between the demigods and the wolves; a barrier of pain.

"Is fire on that list?" Leo said his punchline━something Sav knew was satisfying for him.

"Awe, come on," whined Coach Hedge, turning to Leo like a scolded child. "I can't hit them if they're way over there!"

Every time a wolf came close, Leo was there to keep them back with a wave of fire from his hands. But each effort seemed to make him a little more tired, and the gasoline was already dying down. "I can't summon any more gas!" he warmed. Then, his face turned red. "Wow, that came out wrong. I━I mean the burning kind. Gonna take the tool belt a while to recharge. What you got, man?"

"Nothing," said Jason. "Not even a weapon that works."

     "Lightning?" tried Piper.

Jason frowned, concentrating, but nothing happened. "I think the snowstorm is interfering, or something."

     "Unleash the venti!"

"Then we'll have nothing to give Aeolus. We'll have come all this way for nothing!"

Savreen felt her heart beat rise. Her stance shattered in confidence and she cowered back, realising that they were surrounded, without weapons and without any way out. They were doomed. She felt the necklace in her jacket start to burn, teasing her.

Lycaon laughed. "I can smell your fear. A few more minutes of life, heroes. Pray to whatever gods you wish. Zeus did not grant me mercy, and you will have none from me."

The flames were spluttering out. Jason cursed and dropped his sword. He crouched as if prepared to go hand-to-hand. Leo pulled out his hammer from his pack. Piper raised her dagger. Coach Hedge hefted his club, the only one who looked excited about dying.

Savreen's head was buzzing. She felt light-headed. Her necklace had grown so hot, it was glowing with the colour of the pink gems out of her pocket. This was it, they were going to die, and she couldn't do anything about it━

It got too much. Savreen's chakram folded back into her ring and she threw her hands out with her eyes clenched tight, crying out a, "No! Stop!"

There was a pull to her gut and her eyes shot open just in time to see the same glowing colour of pink from the necklace in her pocket surround Lyacon and his wolves like mist━drifting out and towards their ears, their noses and even their eyes, squeezing into the smallest of crevices before it disappeared, and the glow of their red gazes turned a ghostly pink. And like that, they all stopped, just as she said.

Savreen and her friends froze, shocked.

Eyes wide and her breath hitched, Sav didn't know what had happened━or what she had done. She kept her arms out, scared that if she moved them, this charm would fall. Before hand, she had confused people with mutterings of harmony━made them feel calm and think of the best part of themselves. But never has she been able to control them; make them stop with no objection, like she had become some puppeteer and they were her puppets on strings.

"Uh ... Sav?" Leo managed, breathless with horror. "Your necklace is glowing."

It was. From within her pocket, the pink light of her necklace's gems was creating a beacon light show━casting light onto the cave walls, Lycaon and his wolves, and even her.

She was too shocked to speak. To even answer. If she could have done more, she never got the chance, for a ripping sound broke through the howling of the wind. A long stick sprouted from the neck of the nearest wolf━the shaft of a silver arrow. Savreen's charm broke, and the wolf held a moment of limbo as if he didn't even know himself before the pain hit him. He writhed, shrieked and then fell, melting into a puddle of shadow.

Savreen cradled her hands to her chest, horrified as more arrows came and more wolves fell. The pack broke in confusion. An arrow flashed towards Lycaon, but the wolf king caught it midair. Then, he yelled in pain. When he dropped the arrow, it left a charred, smoking gash across his palm. Aother arrow snagged him in the shoulder, and the wolf king staggered.

"Curse them!" he croed. He growled at his pack, and the wolves turned and ran. Lycaon fixed his beady eyes on Jason. "This isn't over, boy." He sent a final withering glare to Sav, and she had a feeling that threat had moved onto her, as well.

Then, he disappeared into the night with his pack.

Seconds later, Sav heard more wolves. But the sound was different━less threatening, less chilling, more like hunting dogs on the scent. A smaller white wolf burst into the cave, following by two more.

Hedge raised his club, "Kill it?"

    "No!" said Piper. "Wait."

The wolves tilted their heads and studied the campers with huge golden eyes.

In following out of the storm, came their masters: a troop of hunters in white-and-grey winter camouflage━at least half a dozen of them. All carrying bows, with quivers of glowing silver arrows on their backs.

One, a little taller than the rest, stepped forward in her parka hood. She crouched down and snatched up the arrow that had wounded Lycaon's hand.

"So close," she cursed. She turned to her companions. "Pheobe, stay with me. Watch the entrance. The rest of you, follow Lycaon. We can't lose him now. I'll catch up with you."

Her hunters mumbled in agreement and disappeared in the same direction Lycaon and his pack ran.

The girl in white turned towards them, her face still hidden. "We've been following that demon's trail for over a week. Is everyone all right? No one got bit?"

Jason was as frozen as a statue, eyes fixed on the girl. Savreen then realised there was something similar━her voice ... it was hard to explain, but something about her words ... they formed the same way as Jason's.

"You're her," breathed Piper. "You're Thalia."

Thalia tensed. Her fingers itched as if to draw her bow, but then they redirected to her parka hood. She threw it back, revealing a sharp face such as a hawk's, with electrical blue eyes and jet-black spiked hair. Across her forehead shimmered a silver band.

"Do I know you?" she demanded with the same authority Jason held.

Piper took a shaking breath. "Uh ... well━um━this━this might be a shock, but━"

"Thalia," Jason managed to move. But his steps were staggered and weak. He sounded as if he forgot what words were. "I━I'm Jason ... your brother."
