━━Speeding after storm spirits was not a good time for Savreen to be in her thoughts. But she couldn't help it, so ... sorry?

As Jason shouted for Leo to speed up and he replied with a sharp, "Bro! If I get any closer, he'll spot us. Bronze dragon ain't exactly a stealth plane!" With a few angry curses in Spanish. But Savreen couldn't help but stare. She wondered whether he noticed, considering she sat right behind him━but he was perhaps far too busy trying not to crash them into a building chasing after the storm spirits. Sav's mind was speeding herself; not exploring much except that Leo could use fire━her Leo. She didn't know whether to be shocked, worried, or angry. A lot of things made sense now, of course; like all the times he could magically make her tacos on the rooftops back at the Wilderness School. But she also found it horribly ironic when she considered what happed to his mother.

But that wasn't the only thing that bothered her. It wasn't him, or his powers, or how he never told her━that didn't bother her, at all. She wasn't scared of him, she wasn't as shocked or horrified as she thought she'd be. Instead, she remembered what that face in the earth told her about Leo's father and her necklace, and this new knowledge about the person she swore she knew the best made her feel unbalanced.

"Slow down!" Piper yelled and Savreen was brought back just in time to see Festus clip the edge of a building, slicing off a stone gargoule before Leo pulled up.

"Go above the building," Jason suggested. "Well track him from there."

"You want to drive this thing?" grumbled Leo, but he did was Jason asked.

After a few minutes, Jason spotted the storm spirit again, zipping through the streets with no apparent purpose━blowing over pedestrians, ruffling flags, making cars swerve.

"Oh, great," muttered Piper. "There're two."

She was right. A second spirit blasted around the corner of the Renaissance Hotel and linked up with the first. Savreen sighed, agreeing with Piper. It's as if one isn't chaotic enough.

"Those guys do not need any more caffeine," muttered Leo, shaking his head with a scoff.

"I guess Chicago's a good place to hang out," murmured Savreen thoughtfully. "Nobody's going to question a couple more harsh winds..."

"More than a couple," said Jason. "Look."

The dragon circled over a wide avenue next to a lakeside park. Storm spirits were converging━at least a dozen of them, whirling around a big public art installation.

     "Perfect..." mumbled Sav, sarcastic.

"Which one do you think is Dylan?" then asked Leo. "I wanna throw something."

Savreen wouldn't consider herself violent, but she wanted to throw something at Dylan, too━like her shoe, or something ... or her chakram. She hasn't had the chance to use it so far in this quest.

But she soon gasped when she caught something in the image of the video screens of the art installation. It changed to a woman's face with her eyes closed━the same woman she had seen in the landscape before. "Leo ..." she let out, her throat dry.

"I see her," he replied. "I don't like her, but I see her."

Then the screens went dark. The Anemoi (or Venti? Sav is still a little confused) swirled together into a single funnel cloud and skittered across the fountain, kicking up a high watersprout. They got to its centre, popped off a drain cover and disappeared underground.

"Did they just go down a drain?" Piper asked. "How are we supposed to follow them?"

"Maybe we shouldn't," said Leo. "That fountain thing is giving me seriously bad vibes. Am I right, mi vida?" he glanced back at Sav and she blinked, a little suprirsed. "Is your Chaotic-Feeling Metal Detector going crazy?"

Savreen blinked, a little takenaback. "I'm ... I'm not a chaotic-feeling metal detector━" she glanced back at Jason and Piper for confirmation. "A━am I a Chaotic-Feeling Metal Detector?"

Jason made a face to say something probably along the lines of, I don't know, I mean

But Piper cut him off with a blunt, "Yes, babe. Yes you are."

Sav bounced her brows, surprised she kind of liked the title.

"Anyway," Leo shrugged. "But like, aren't we supposed to━like━beware the earth?"

Jason pursed his lips. He thought about it for a few moments before deciding: "Put us down in that park. We'll check it out on foot."

━━Festus landed in an open area between the lake and the skyline. The signs said Grant Park, a field of ice, snow and salted walkways. The dragon's hot metal feet hissed as they touched down. Festus flapped his wings unhappily and shot fire into the sky, but there was no one around to notice. The wind coming off the lake was bitterly cold━anyone with sense would be inside. Sav shivered.

They dismounted and Festus the dragon stomped his feet. One of his ruby eyes flickered, so it looked like he was blinking.

"Uh ... is that normal?" asked Jason. He gave Sav's back a friendly rub to help her feel warmer.

Leo pulled a rubber mallet from his tool belt. He whacked the dragon's bad eye and the light went back to normal. "Yes," he said. "Festus can't hang around here, though, in the middle of the park. They'll arrest him for loitering ... probably. Maybe if I had a dog whistle...?" he rummaged through his tool belt, but came up with nothing. "Too specialised?" he guessed. "Okay, give me a safety whistle. They got that in lots of machine shops."

This time, it worked, and Leo pulled out a big plastic orange whistle. He let out a chuckle. "Coach Hedge would be jealous! Okay, Festus, listen," he blew the whistle. Savreen winced at the shrill sound that ripped through the chilly air. "You hear that, come find me, okay? Until then, you fly wherever you want. Just ... try not to barbecue any pedestrians."

The dragon snorted━hopefully in agreement━before he spread his wings and launched into the air. Savreen went to raise her arm to wave goodbye, only for it to scream out in pain. "Argh!" she cried out, and held it to her chest. Squinting her eyes, she tried not to cry at the sudden pain like a million needles hit her like bricks to the chest━or arm.

Leo was at her side in an instant. And Savreen would've been grateful, if she wasn't suddenly dizzy with pain. She had completely forgotten about her injury back in the Cyclopes factory━the ambrosia and nectar must have lost their effect by now, and the bliss was replaced with a fresh wave of pain worse than the first time. Piper was having the same trouble, taking only a single step before wincing.

Jason stared at them before he went red in a flush of shame in rememberance. "The nectar we gave you two might be wearing off."

     "It's fine," Piper shivered.

Savreen didn't think she was fine, but nodded anyway. Holding her broken arm close, she tried not to wince and grimace as she walked. The wind that hit her arm was not helping━at all. Leo was still at her side; he didn't say anything, but tapped a few sentences on her good shoulder like: I'm sorry I forgot. You're all right, princesa. Just keep going...

"Let's get out of the wind," Jason then suggested.

"Down a drain?" Piper shuddered. "Sounds cosy."

They wrapped themselves up as best as they could and headed towards the fountain. Savreen wasn't happy to have to need help in getting down Crown Fountain. It reminded her of the way her mother whispered to her, so beautiful, like she was just naive with no knowledge of the horrrors of the world; like she wasn't good enough to be on this quest. Despite everything Sav has been through━things that made her far from naive; her father's death, her grandparents death, foster home after foster home ... And yet, she was feeling very unhappy with who she was. She always liked the fact she was how she was after everything she's been through: sweet,  gentle, kind━she used to be proud of it. But now? All she could think of was how she hasn't fought to help protect her friends. How she stood back and let them do all the dirty work. How she let herself be a damsel in distress. She wasn't that person━no matter how much people thought she was. She hated being that person. She hated being underestimated, but at the same time, Savreen never did anything to prove otherwise.

Now, instead of feeling content, she just felt useless.

But she was so afraid of causing something to happen. That if she stepped in, the necklace in her pocket might decide to switch the fight and the quest into something dreadful and horrific━and tragic. Like everything else in her life.

The sewer was surprisingly nice. It didn't smell and it was all brickework heading North to South. The air was warm and dry, with only a trickle fo water on the floor.

"Are all sewers this nice?" Piper wondered.

     "No," said Leo. "Trust me."

Jason frowned at him. "How do you know━?"

"Hey, man, I ran away six times. I've slept in some weird places, okay? Now, which way do we go?"

Jason tilted his head as if listening, then pointed South. "That way."

Savreen hated how her voice was so timid, "How do you know?"

"There's a draught blowing South," he said. "Maybe the venti went with the flow."

(It wasn't much of a lead, but nobody offered anything better).

Unfortunately, as soon as they started walking, Piper stumbled. Jason had to catch her.

     "Stupid ankle," she cured.

Savreen looked away, hoping that the dark could hide her forehead beaded with sweat. Her arm hurt━it hurt so bad. But she didn't want to be useless. She wasn't useless. She can do this. She is doing this

"Let's rest," Jason decided. "We could all use it. We've been going nonstop for over a day. Leo, can you pull any food from that tool belt beside breath mints?"

"Thought you'd never ask. Chief Leo is on it!"

Piper and Jason sat on a brick legde while Leo shuffled through his pack. Savreen followed him as the other two huddled together a little while away━she got the feeling they wanted to be alone. Sav hoped they'd get together once everything was figured out with Piper's memories of Jason, and Jason's past. She really did. She wanted there to be happiness for both of them.

Wincing, Savreen sat down near where Leo was setting up a small cooking fire. No matter how hard she tried to hide it, the hiss that came out of her mouth━even through gritted teeth━was unmistakable.

Leo gave her a glance as he pulled out a lighter from his toolbet━then he thought better of it and instead, with a snap of his fingers, lit up the wood with a small flame. It lit up Sav's pain-stricken face. She was back to staring at him━she couldn't help it. How had she never noticed this about him before? Sav always thought she knew him better than anyone else ... but here she was, feeling like for the first time, she knew nothing about her best friend.

"How's that arm treating you, preciosa?"

Sav glanced down at her arm, hating how her eyes welled up with tears. "It hurts," she mumbled.

     "Understatement of the century?"

Her lips quirked up into a weak smile. She met his soft, brown gaze. In the light of the fire, it crackled like a hearth. "Yeah ..."

A comfortable silence settled between them. But it was different than their usual ones━Sav could feel the tension. Things have changed between them, and Savreen hated how it stemmed from her end over some stupid things that sleeping woman had said. She could hear hushed mutterings between Jason and Piper and she glanced over, seeing the two sitting close together. Leo's gaze followed. Jokingly, he held up his hands and mimicked a bow━he pulled the invisible string back and let it go. He whispered, "Ping! Cupid has made his shot."

When he realised Sav didn't laugh, his amused grin faltered and he frowned at her, concerned. Leo reached a hand out to her knee and gently tapped, What's wrong?

She pursed her lips. Sav didn't know why she did it, but her fingers slithered out to Leo's hand and grasped it. His hand was small, but it fit perfectly against hers━matching size. She upturned her palm and thought she heard Leo's breath hitch as she compared the equal stretch of their fingers. He had some oil smudged across his knuckles. But she felt something different this time in comparing their hands━she felt a buzzing; a warmth from the fire inside him. His hands always warmed her, but now she truly understood why.

Savreen didn't say anything as she linked their fingers together, feeling something cross her heart inside her chest; it fluttered as she looked at these fingers she thought she knew; fingers that gave her so much comfort, fingers that helped speak with her, just the two of them that no one else knew ... and they had held something else she never knew.

"I never realised," she managed softly. Leo stared at her, for once, absolutely silent.

The fire beside them lit up their faces in bronze and sunset orange lights; and Sav felt like they were lying in those fields all over again, hiding from Ana Mari after breaking her precious china vase collection.

With his curly hair, sharp ears and features, Sav always thought Leo looked like some cartoon character. But ... it wasn't bad. In fact, Sav felt her stomach suddenly jump as she saw his nose twitch━did his nose always do that?

Then something in her jacket pocket burned and she was jolted back to reality. She let go of his hand and looked away, gazing into the fire with a lump in her throat. She tried to ignore how hurt Leo suddenly looked, but he just started to pull out all sorts of things from his toolbelt: taco shells, salad, beans, tofu. He set the tofu and beans onto a small fry-pan and held it over the fire, giving it a little shake here and there. The smell that began to grow made Sav's stomach rumble, but she didn't say anything. She noticed no meat on his pan, and that warmth returned. Whenever Piper joined them up on the roof (Jason never did, since he was scared about breaking the rules, now Sav realised it was because had never even been there in the first place...), Leo would make vegetarian food for her, and while he and Sav weren't, they'd eat it with Piper with a saying: "you eat the grass, we eat the grass".

"So this is how you made that amazing food back at the Wilderness School?" Sav decided to say, trying to break the tension between them.

And Leo's grin returned━crazy, chaotic and mischevious, but heart-warming all the same. "We've been through this, mi vida. I'm a special boy."

But it faltered again. A thought crossed his mind. Sav titled her head at him, "What is it?"

Leo did what she expected. He shrugged and tried to dismiss it━never truly telling how he felt. Savreen shuffled closer and grasped his free hand with her good one. She ignored her pain and changed the conversation to something Piper and Jason wouldn't accidentally hear. What is it?

Her best friend set his jaw. He gave the pan a tilt, moving the food in it along to help stop it from sticking. Sav thought he'd push it away, but to her surprise, he replied, Are you scared?

Sav's brows furrowed, started. "No, of course not," she whispered. Realising she spoke aloud she quickly added with a series of taps, Why would you think that

Because I see it, said Leo, not meeting her gaze at all━as if scared of what he'd see.

Sav's heart fell. Did he think she'd leave━just like everyone else? No matter what. No matter the stupid necklace, or what that Dirt Woman said about their parents━even if it meant the death of her, Sav would never leave Leo. Ever. It was the one thing she was sure of the most in her messed up, crazy world.

I'm not scared of you, she wondered whether ferocity could be translated in Morse Code. You're the last peson who'd ever scare me ...

Sav stopped, her heart racing as she thought whether she should tell him. Grasping his hand, she was warm, and she was safe and comfortable━but the truth of her? Even Leo's hand couldn't bring comfort to that.

And yet, she drew her hand away and reached into her pocket. Leo wasn't looking━perhaps he thought their conversation was over, until Sav pulled out the necklace. The jewells glinted in the fire, catching Leo's eyes and they widened. He looked over, his pan pulling away from the fire as he set it down beside him, mouth agape as he saw the necklace Sav held out to him.

Leo cursed, enamoured by the expensive diamonds and saphires that were heavy in Sav's palm━heavy with the tragedy they carried. He reached a tentative hand to it but she pulled it back with sudden fear. "No," she croaked, her voice barely more than a trembling whisper. "D━don't touch it ... I don't━I don't want it to hurt you."

He blinked at her, incredulous. "Sav, it's a necklace━" Leo scoffed, shaking his head. "A freaking expensive necklace, where did you even get that?"

Sav's lump in her throat grew worse. "Hera," she stated simply. Leo froze. He met her gaze again, started. She nodded, still shaking. Her words were hard to get out━she's never spoken about this before━to anyone. And she thought she'd might cry. This was her worst fear━this was her tragedy. This was her horror. "B━before I came to the Wilderness School. She ... she came out of nowhere and━and gave me this necklace. I━I was so confused, but I kept it because it was pretty. I wore it to school the next day and ... and there was an accident in the science lab. The girl working with me almost got killed, and ... and they thought it was my fault. So ... I was sent to Nevada."

She waited for Leo to say something━anything. But he didn't. He just watched her, breath bated. Sav swallowed harshly and continued, the grip around the gorgeous necklace trembling severely. "I━I tried to get rid of it ... but every time I did, it just ... it just came right back to my pocket, or under my pillow, or in the drawer of my bedside table. It━it's attatched to me. Linked to me ... and it took me a while to realise what it was, but then━when Hera reappared to me before this quest and told me I was the daughter of Harmonia, it made me realise ..."

Leo frowned slightly at the mention of being told by Hera who she was, "Wait━you knew you were the daughter of Harmonia. Weren't you claimed?"

"I was," croaked Sav, feeling the tears oncoming. She couldn't meet his gaze. "I━I didn't know at the time ... but I was claimed when ... when I was eight. Back━back at Ana Mari's. The next day, people came to get me━"

Leo realised, "And you were taken away to another home..."

She nodded, sniffling. "Again, and again. I think ... I think my mother was trying to keep me safe from monsters, maybe. Move me around so I couldn't stay in one place too long━monsters can smell demigods, right?"

"Why didn't you say anything?" she could feel a flicker of anger in his tone and she flushed.

"I was scared ..." she murmured. "I ... I thought that I'd ruin the quest."

     "Why?"

"Because of this..." she showed him the necklace again. "Leo━don't━do you know the story about the Necklace of Harmonia?"

He titled his head, thinking. His cheeks were flushed a little━Sav didn't think it was from the fire, but instead with anger over her keeping this secret for this long. "Yeah ... isn't it about that necklace that like━brought misfortune to everyone who wore it━" his eyes widened and he stared down at the piece of jewellery in Sav's plam, suddenly looking very ashen. "Wait━you mean to tell me. That is that necklace? You━you're just carrying about the Necklace of Harmonia in your pocket?"

"I don't want to," Savreen snapped before she stopped herself. She pursed her lips and added, "I just can't get rid of it no matter how hard I try ... But that's not it, Leo. That ... This Dirt Woman━whoever she is. She spoke to me, as well. Trying to divide us, but ... what she said, I don't think she was lying."

Leo's brows bounced a little with the silent question of, what?

Savreen hesitated. She didn't know how this will affect their friendship━she was scared it would ruin it ... it's already started to do so even without mentioning it. "She ... she said that your father, Hephaestus, was the one who made the Necklace of Harmonia ..." she watched him carefully for his reaction. "He ... he was apparently jealous over the affair between his wife, Aphrodite and Ares and decided to curse their child ... with a necklace that will bring tragedy to her and all of her brethen. My mother: Harmonia. And she said that the children of Hephaestus━that you will bring me more tragedy than the necklace ever could..."

Her heart was thundering as she awaited Leo's answer.

He picked up some salad, the cooked beans and tofu, and placed them into a taco shell. He was silent for a long time━so long, Sav was ready to beg for him to say something. He passed her over the shell and finally said in a sullen, gutteral mutter, "If I were you, I'd stay away from me. I've caused enough tragedy ..."

Savreen didn't eat. She stared at him in shock. "What ... what do you mean?" she asked carefully.

In the shadows of the fire, Leo looked like he might cry. Something hit Sav━a realisation. She frowned, and shook her head. "No ..." she whispered. "Leo, no ... your mother's death, the fire, that wasn't your fault. That was her," Savreen told him strongly. "That Dirt Woman did that. Not you. It wasn't because you can summon fire━it's her fault. All these years, she's been trying to stop you. Trying to make you feel like a failure. But you're not. You're really, really, important. You're ... you're important to me."

Leo met her gaze, eyes welled up with pain she knew all too well. "That's what she said. She said I was meant to do something important━something that would make or break that big prophecy about the ten demigods. That's what scared me. I don't know if I'm up to it."

Savreen could relate with that. She was one of those demigods, and she didn't know whether she was up to that pressure, either.

"Sav," Leo spoke up again, softly, "let me tell you something: Tragedy━it's not just a curse put on Harmonia's children or some stupid necklace. It's a curse faced by everyone. You can be scared of it, but no one can escape it. It's a part of life, and we all just have to accept it. You know that."

Savreen knew he was right, but she still stared at the necklace with a trembling fury. Deciding she couldn't look at it any longer, she slipped it back inside her pocket and said truthfully, "I don't care what the Dirt Woman said about you and our parents," she told Leo. "I don't think you bring tragedy. You saved us from the Cyclopes━with the fire. I would be dead if it weren't for you. You're my best friend, no curse or family rivallry will ever change that."

She was glad to see the slight tug of his lips into a lovely smile.

✿✼:*゚:༅。.。༅:*・゚゚・⭑

━━When they woke up after four hours (Jason decided to wake them all up since he had taken watch), they broke camp and started down the tunnel. Savreen had some more nectar, careful not to have too much or waste resources. But either way, it made her arm much better, healing a lot faster than it would on its own.

The tunnel twisted and turned, seeming to go on forever. Savreen wasn't sure what she was supposed to be expecting at the end━a dungeon? A mad scientists lab? A bar just for storm spirits? Instead, they found polished steel elevator doors, each one engraved with a cursive letter 'M'. Next to the elevator was a directory, like the ones for department stores.

"M for Macy's?" Piper guessed. "I think they have one in downtown Chicago..."

(Sav really hoped it was Macy's).

"Or Monocle Motors still?" said Leo. "Guys, read the directory. It's messed up."

Parking, Kennels, Main Entrance .......... SEWER LEVEL
      Furnishings and Café M ............................................. 1
      Women's Fasion and Magical Appliances ................. 2
      Men's Wear and Weaponry ........................................ 3
Cosmetics, Potions, Poisons and Sundries .............. 4

"Kennels for what?" asked Piper. "And what kind of department store has its entrance in a sewer?"

"Or sells poisons," Leo frowned. "Man, what does sundries even mean? Is that like underwear?"

      Savreen shrugged.

Jason took a deep breath, "When in doubt, start at the top."

They huddled into the elevator, and Jason pressed his thumb against the level four button. It glowed gold, and with a jolt, they started to head upwards to the top floor. When the doors slid open on the fourth floor, and the scent of perfume wafted into the elevator, Jason stepped out first, sword ready.

"Guys," he said. "You've got to see this ..."

Savreen followed him out and caught her breath. "Um ... Piper, sorry to dissapoint ... but this is not Macy's."

The department store looked like the inside of a kaleidoscope. The entire ceilng was a stained-glass mosaic with astrological signs around a giant sun. The daylight streaming through it washed everything in a thousand different colours. The upper floors made a ring of balconies around a huge central atrium, so they could see all the way down to the ground floor. Gold railings glittered so brigthly they were hard to look at.

Aside from the stained-glass ceiling and the elevator, Savreen didn't see any other windows or doors, but instead just two sets of glass elevators that ran between the levels. The carpeting looked like a unicorn vomited all over it━it was a riot of oriental patterns and colours, and the racks of merchandise were just as bizzare: shirt racks and shoe trees mixed in with armoured mannequins, beds of nails and fur coats that seemed to moving.

In the centre of the atrium, a fountain sprayed water twenty feet into the air, changing colour from red to yellow to blue. The pool glittered with golden coins━Savreen believed them to be called drachma's━and on either sid eof the fountain stood a gilded cage. Inside one, a minature hirrucane swirled and lighting flashed. Someone had imprisoned the storm spirits, and the cage shuddered as they tried to get out. In the other, frozen like a statue, was a short, buff satyr, holding a tree-branch club.

Savreen let out a gasp, "Oh, my gosh━it's Coach Hedge! We've got to get down there!"

"May I help you find anything?"

At the voice, all four of them jumped back.

A woman just appeared in front of them. (And yes, Savreen is serious. She went poof! into existence right before her). An elegant black dress dorned her slim body, accentuated with diamond jewellery. She looked like a retired fashion moden━long dark hair swept over one shoulder, a thin, haunting and yet striking face and long red painted nails.

She smiled, "I'm so happy to see new customers! How may I help you?"

Leo glanced at Jason like, All yours. "Um ..." started Jason, "is this your store?"

(Savreen hid her sudden urge to face-palm).

The woman nodded. "I found it abandoned, you know. I understand so many stores are, these days. I decided it would make the perfect place. I love collecting tasteful objects, helping people and offering quality goods at a reasonable price. So this seemed a good ... how do you say ... first acquisition in this country."

     "So, you're new to America?"

"I am ... new," the woman agreed. Savreen frowned. "I am the Princess of Colchis. My friends call me Your Highness. Now, what are you looking for?"

Savreen didn't feel too right about this woman. Leo might call it her Chaotic-Feelings Metal Detector, but it was going absolutely crazy right now. Piper seemed to feeling off about this woman, too, for she poked Jason in the ribs. "Jason ..."

"Um, right," he had been staring at the woman and quickly shook his head. "Actually, Your Highness ..." he pointed to the gilded cage on the first floor. "That's our friend down there, Gleeson Hedge. The satyr. Could we ... have him back, please?"

"Of course!" the princess agreed immediately. "I would love to show you my inventory. First, may I know your names?"

Savreen's stomach jolted. Something wasn't right━something was far from right. She caught glimpse of Jason opening his mouth to speak, but she quickly tugged at his jacket sleeve and said, "Jason, I wouldn't━"

"This is Savreen," he cut her off. "This is Piper and Leo. I'm Jason."

The princess fixed her eyes on him, and for a moment, Savreen saw her face glow with a furious anger that made her take a step back. This is not good, this is not good━are the boys seeing this?

"Jason," the woman smiled, the anger suddenly gone. "What an interesting name! I think we'll have to make a special deal for you. Come, children. Let's go shopping."
