chapter ten
may we all ask for forgiveness

THE ADAMS FAMILY sang happy birthday at the top of their lungs to a giggling 14 year old boy. Samuel carried the cupcake in his hands lighting the candle. The younger kids clapped their hands together trying to clap at the beat of the song.

"Ya viene amaneciendo! Ya la luz del día nos dio!" the family sang in Spanish to the boy who had been pretending to be asleep the whole time. "Levántate de mañana! Mira que ya amaneció!"

Vincent sat up half of him still inside his sleeping bag with a little smile on his face. He knew the world was never going to be the same like it used to be. He was never going to step inside his now abandoned home. He was never going to see his friends again or the girl he was crushing on in his History class. He was never going to have the chance to be a kid again.

      But despite all of the things he lost, the one thing he still had was his family. The people that would keep him safe and sound. His parents and his beloved aunt. His cousin, Winston and his three sisters and the girl they picked up on the way. He already had what he wanted most and that was the people he loved.

       It wasn't a surprise when Nina, Mariana and Rosie rushed inside the tent to hug their older brother and the four fall back to the ground all giggling together.

      "Come on!" Rosie waved to Eirene

       Vincent glanced over making space for the girl who ran over joining the group hug. The siblings made sure to include the girl in everything they did. Winston would have joined but he was fast asleep in the next tent.

The kids sat back up letting Vincent get out of his sleeping bag. "Come on, make your wish mi flaco." Letty spoke with a big smile on her face.

Rosie watched from the floor as she could see Vincent trying to decide what to wish for. He had a face of concentration before closing his eyes and blowing out the candle. In a swift motion the father took out the candle and smashed the cupcake on the boy's face.

"Que lo muerda!" Samuel changed after throwing the cupcake.

"Pinche hombre! Eso se dice antes!" Macaria scolded her brother as she hit his back. The siblings laughed at Vincent's face of frosting while he wiped it off with a napkin his mom handed him.

"Feliz cumpleaños, Vincent!" The family cheered each person hugging him.

The father clapped his hands as he made the announcement, "come on it's time to pack up." The four siblings looked at one another as Eirene was clueless. "We're heading into the city today."

CHILLS ran through Rosie's body as the wind picked up in the city as she rubbed her arms for warmth. The family were crouched down on the truck watching patrol cars pass by the street. Samuel tried to distinguish what type of force they were but everything was labeled WCKD. He didn't recognize that name.

"Stay down." Letty urged especially to the kids laying down on the truck bed. She could see soldiers armed with large guns walking around the street. A few of them walked inside homes some walking out with kids others empty handed. "What's going on, Samuel?"

Samuel shrugged his shoulders having no clue what was happening and why they were taking kids out of their homes. "They're an organization dad. They're the ones who are trying to find a cure for the flare." Vincent explained once he saw the the logo as he was the one up to date with news.

"This is the World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department." One of the cars speakers announced to the street repeating itself. "This is the World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department."

Letty rummaged to find her phone on the ground as she picked up dialing Florence's number. The mother held the phone up to her ear waiting for the women on the other line to pick up. Every ring made Letty afraid of the possibility of the Florence's kids being taken away.

Letty's anxiety worsened once the call went straight to voicemail. The woman dialed the number again having the same results. She dialed Edward's number and was sent to voicemail as well. "No one's picking up!"

The husband glanced over to his wife shushing her. "Be quiet, Leticia. They're leaving."

Letty went silent. The family peeked through the window watching most of the trucks drive away. Two trucks remained in front of the house Florence and her family were living in. "Amonos, hijo." Samuel stated waving his hand at his son to follow him.

Samuel opened the car door stepping out while Vincent jumped out of the truck bed landing on his feet. "Samuel, what do you think you're doing?" Letty asked wide eyed as she wanted everyone to stay inside the truck.

"No one is suppose to know they're living there." Samuel explained grabbing his gun from the drivers seat. "Someone must have reported them. C'mon, Vince."

Letty raised her voice as the two males headed over to the house. "Get back over here! Samuel!"

The two had already walked further ignoring the pleads of the worried woman inside the truck. Rosie was tucked under Nina's arm as the older sister tried to keep her calm. The rest of the kids were hiding down inside the truck. Samuel carried his gun pointing down as the two walked up the porch of the front house.

       "Check the room." Samuel ordered his son as they each checked different rooms. Everything was empty besides the kitchen. A grown couple sat at their kitchen table with two cups of coffee. Vincent had found the two with regret written across their faces.

      Samuel walked up a few seconds later realizing these two were the people that ratted the British family out. "Where are they?" Vince questioned.

       The woman dropped her gaze down to the gun the boy had in his hands. The hair on her arms sprung up as goosebumps ran down her body thinking the father and son were here to kill them. Her fingers tapping on the fragile cup in her hands, she knew her own husband wouldn't defend her for ratting the family out. He had disapproved of it all and she had done it for some lousy amount of money.

       "They're still downstairs." The older man replied fiddling with his fingers. "But the officers are with them—"

      The sound of a loud gunshot cut the man off as Samuel yelled at Vincent. "Get down!" The father and son reached each other covering themselves under a table as the older couple fled the kitchen.

      Screams were heard throughout the house grabbing the attention of the rest of the family outside in the truck. Another gunshot followed rather quickly with screams before dozens of gunshots went off. The screams went to a halt and everyone could only hear the painful cries of children coming from the basement.

     "Mom!" Newt cried out as he dropped to the ground to see both his parents laying on the floor. He could see the tears rolling down his mother's face and the lifeless body of his father next to her. "Dad!"

       Lizzy sobbed falling to the ground as she curled into a ball rocking herself. "What's wrong with mom and dad?!" Newt had turned to his sister for answers as she couldn't respond to him. "What did you do?!" He yelled at the officers in front of him.

      Nina jumped out of the truck helping Rosie down as the two sisters geared up. They needed to go inside to make sure their father and brother were alive. Especially after another gunshot went off and Letty informed the kids and Macaria to stay in the truck no matter what happens. The mother got out of the truck grabbing her gun before sprinting to her daughters who had reached the porch.

      The three girls headed inside quickly hiding inside a closet watching officers walk out of the house. The three rush out of the closet running towards the basement and down the stairs. Before the three could get further to the scene, their sight saw Samuel sitting against a wall with a bleeding arm and a bullet stuck inside his flesh. Vincent next to him trying to stop the bleeding and figuring out how to get the bullet out.

      "Samuel!" Letty exclaimed rushing over to him to try and help.

       The man shook his head, "I'm okay. Help Flo, she's still breathing."

       The three girls turn around to take in the murder scene. Edward laid on his front with a pool of blood becoming bigger and bigger. The shotgun Samuel had given him was a few inches away from his hand. The man was lifeless.

      "My babies? Where are my babies?!" Florence screamed out as Letty ran to her. A small puddle of red had circled around her. Bullets were graved inside while she had other gun wounds around her body. Florence was bleeding out. Fast. "They took Lizzy and Issac!" She cried out in pain.

      Letty turned to her daughters who both nodded already knowing what she was going to ask of them. "On it." Nina responded.

       "Go with your sisters." Samuel demanded his son who hesitated as his father was injured. Samuel noticed his hesitance before reassuring him, "I'm fine! I ain't going to die anytime soon! Now go with your sisters!"

       Rosie rushed in between her siblings as she was too young to be witnessing all of this. "Nina!" Vincent yelled as the girl was at the front door with the gun pointed.

      "I got it!" Nina replied aiming at one of the soldiers who had a grip on Lizzy. The bullet flew fast before reaching the only exposed part of the officers skin and carving inside the back of his neck.

      Vincent had immediately rushed past the sisters sprinting to Lizzy who he was able to grab a hold of and push her behind him for protection. Nina's eyes had widen as the officer had dropped to the ground dead by the shot she had made. Her precise accuracy scared her especially at times like these when she didn't think it could cause death.

      The other remaining officers hear the gunshot and notice the officer on the floor and the child missing. Newt struggles to get out of another officers grip as he sees Vincent taking Lizzy with him. Nina took deep breaths as she was trying not to panic from killing a person. Rosie was holding onto Lizzy as Vincent was in the front of them trying to protect his sisters.

      "Everything will be alright, okay?" Letty spoke to Florence as she held on to her hand. Florence nodded not knowing if to believe Letty. "They're doing everything they can to save them. I can tell you that. My kids wont let your kids get taken away. I promise."

       "Lizzy!" Newt cried out as the officers push the boy inside the car closing the car door.

       "Issac!" Lizzy yelled for her brother as she knew the officers wanted her and not him. "They want me not him!" Lizzy pulled on the back of Vincent's shirt. The boy had turned around after listening to her and he covered the girl in his arms as gunshots went flying towards the siblings.

      Rosie and Nina ducked together trying to dodge the bullets as Vincent yelled in pain protecting Lizzy. The two sisters scream as they could see Vincent bleeding from his leg.

     Samuel glanced over to the stairs as him and Letty recognized the screams of their daughters. The man stood up on his feet ignoring Letty's protests as he rushed out to help his kids. Letty whimpered as she wanted to be brave and not cry in front of Florence but the possibility of her kids dying was killing her.

       Samuel ran out of the house to see Vincent struggling to get up the stairs with Lizzy covered under him. Nina and Rosie trying to shoot at whatever officer tried to get close to them. Newt inside the officer's car screaming for help. No one around the neighborhood came to help. Everyone stayed inside their homes where they knew they were safe. People were too scared to help the family in need.

      "Hand us the kid and we'll leave." One of the officers explained to Samuel. "We'll leave and won't take your kids with us."

      Rosie glanced over to her father after the man's statement. Samuel shook his head, "you're not taking anyone here. Give us back the boy or we'll fight back."

      The officer scoffed, "you're seriously using your kids as protection?"

       Samuel shook his head, "you don't know what they're capable of. Who do you think aimed the perfect shot at your dead friend over there?"

      "Tio!" A boy cried out grabbing the attention of everyone as they turned their heads to see Winston with a gun pointed at his head. More officers had arrived at the scene and found the rest of the family on the truck. The family was lined up each with officers pointing their guns at their heads.

      "It's them or the kid." The officer stated.

      Vincent moved to see what was happening realizing his family was in danger because of the girl they were protecting. Lizzy had tears running down her face as she blamed herself for the whole commotion. They wanted her and the family was willing to do anything to protect her. She started to sob as Vincent winced in pain from his bleeding foot and trying to comfort her.

      "I—" Samuel stopped talking as he didn't know what to do. Well, he did know what the best option was and it was to save his family. But he also didn't want to give up on the separated siblings.

      "Please don't let them take us! Please!" Lizzy pleaded whimpering in fear as she held onto Vincent for comfort.

      Samuel had walked down the porch trying to grab a hold of the crying Lizzy away from Vincent. "Dad!" Vincent yelled at his father, "no!"

       "We have to!" Samuel yelled back at his son who stayed holding onto Lizzy who gripped onto Vincent. "Déjala ir!"

      "No!" Vincent exclaimed feeling his eyes turn watery as he struggled to keep his grip on Lizzy.

      The father was able to get ahold of Lizzy and away from Vincent who protested. "Here." Samuel stated as his heart ached knowing it was physically hurting him what he was doing.

      Lizzy sobbed, "Sammy please! Don't let them take us away!"

      "I'm sorry, kid." Samuel replied before whispering in her ear, "we'll come look for you, okay? We're not done."

      Elizabeth nodded as she understood that there was a small chance they'd be able to find her and his brother again. Lizzy was put inside the same car as Newt. The officers let go of the family before going back inside their cars. Rosie watched the siblings inside the car holding onto each other. Newt makes eye-contact with Rosie before the car drives off.

       Samuel stood in the same spot ashamed of his actions. Vincent sat on the porch steps taking his shirt off to use it to stop the bleeding on his foot. The rest of the family walked over to them. Nina and Rosie went back inside heading to the basement.

      The sisters walked downstairs to give their mother the news. Letty looked up with hope in her eyes before seeing the looks on her daughters faces. "What happened?"

      Florence was breathing in short breaths as she asked, "my kids? Where's my Isaac and my Lizzy? Where?"

      "I—uh," Nina tried to gather her sentence as she struggled to even come up with one.

      "We couldn't save them." Rosie replied rubbing her own arms.

      Florence couldn't do much as she replied, "promise me you'll continue to look for them? Please?"

      "Of course, Florence." Letty responded

      "Go before they come back to take your kids."
