chapter seven
we're getting you out of here

.ยท:*ยจเผบ โ˜… เผปยจ*:ยท.

SOMETIMES IN LIFE, you wonder what you did to deserve the cards you have been dealt with. You think thoroughly and can't connect the dots. You blame your parents for bringing you into this shitty cruel world but you know deep down it's not their fault. So, what did you do to deserve it? Unfortunately, some people are just born with tragedy in their blood and are told to find peace within it.

How unfortunate that's our reality. But we survive, somehow we always do.

Someone once said, you can't truly call yourself peaceful unless you're capable of great violence. If you're not capable of violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

And here stood, Rosie, trying to figure out what she was. Those words echoed in her head, start with rosie adams, terminate her once and for all. And she thought, haven't they taken enough from her? What more do they want? How important was she that they wanted her dead?

If Mara wasn't with her, Rosie would have fallen into deep spiraling thoughts but before she could, the girl could feel her whole body shaking. In her blurry vision, Rosie could see Mara getting clearer as she gripped her arms shaking her.

"Snap out of it!" Mara whisper-shouted looking around her surroundings hoping no one was still inside the room. "We have to go!"

"Why me?" Rosie questioned not moving a foot until she could get a clear explanation of what was happening. "Mara, why do they want me dead?"

The blue-eyed girl looked around knowing the girls weren't alone. She raised her pointer finger up to her lips before attacking the person who had heard their voices. Before the boy knew it, Mara had Thomas pinned against a wall with a knife threatening his neck. A tactic Rosie used a lot.

"Woah!" Thomas exclaimed shaking his head as his focus went to Rosie who stayed in her spot watching Mara start to interrogate him.

"What the hell do you think you're doing spying on us?" Mara asked giving him a few seconds to speak as he started to stumble with his words. The girl raised her eyebrow up, "what cat got your tongue?"

Rosie grabbed a hold of Mara's arm that held the knife, "back off, he's with me."

Mara flashed the girl an annoyed look before turning to look back at Thomas, "I know that, that doesn't mean I trust him, Rosie."

"I'm sorry," Thomas started to apologize with his hands up as he noticed the bruises forming on Rosie's face, "I just, I heard-what, what happened to your face?"

Rosie shifted her weight onto one leg as she shook her head, "don't worry about it. It's nothing I can't handle. Please tell me you heard what we heard?"

Thomas nodded, "yeah, we have to get out of here. Quickly."

Mara rolled her eyes at the back and forth wanting their talk to speed up. So instead, she did the talking. "There's an exit at the west wing of the facility. Go through the air vents, you won't have time to go through the halls. The kid," Mara pointed at Aris, who stood a few feet away in silence, "will know how to get there. They'll be focused on looking for Rosie, so you'll have time to find your girlfriend. We'll meet you at the west wing's exit in 30 minutes. Be there or we'll leave you."

Rosie opened her mouth to interject to the last sentence but was quickly stopped by Thomas who nodded, "okay, I'll go get the rest. Make sure nothing happens to Rosie."

Mara pursed her lips sounding a bit condescending, "don't worry, she's in better hands with us."

Thomas raised his eyebrow in confusion glancing to Rosie for a good few seconds. The boy's thoughts were something like, 'is this girl really serious? she did not just say that.' The two friends shared a similar look as they both shook it off ignoring Mara's comment. "You want me to tell Newt something?"

"Tell him I'm okay. Don't tell him anything else. I don't want him distracted." Rosie explained as Thomas nodded before saying a brief goodbye and sprinting away with Aris.

"Let's go." Mara stated looking behind her to make sure no one else was spying on them. Rosie followed closely behind going through one of the air vents.

Rosie crawled through the tiny space peeking through the little open holes watching soldiers getting the update about the newest arrivals. She kept following Mara through the air vents. Rosie didn't remember the moment she decided to trust the girl in front of her. Maybe it was when she jumped through the air vents to save her or when she grabbed a hold of her hand giving her tingles that only Newt had ever given her before.

Mara made space before kicking the air vent open. The girl slid through making sure Rosie followed her actions as she helped her out of the vent. "It's okay, you had to do what you had to do. Don't listen to them. Listen to me. Listen to my voice. Focus on my voice." Rosie heard Jessie say as the two girls stood up.

Scanning the room, in the middle of them laid an unconscious officer with a puddle under him. The puddle slowly started to become bigger and the dark red color shined brighter. The man reminded Rosie of the boy she left behind to die. He was in the same condition as Gally was but this man was already dead.

Gally watched his friends leave him behind.

The man was pale with blood pouring out of his lips and his eyes wide open. There was no movement, no more heartbeat. His throat was cut open with a precise line. Rosie wondered who these girls truly were and why was she trusting them so easily. One of them had just killed a soldier.

Samadhi gripped onto the sides of her head, rocking back and forth shutting her eyes closed. "Tell them to stop!" Samadhi exclaimed before starting to hit herself on the sides of her head. She pulled her hair trying to yank it off.

Mara headed to the other end of the room trying to push the lockers. "Rosie, help me push these against the door." The girl nodded quickly reaching the other side and helping Mara push the lockers making them fall and block the door. "Jess," Mara warned taking a peek through the small window on the door.

"I'm trying!" Jess verbalized affected by her friends change in behavior as she tried to bring her back to present moment. Tears had been spilling out of Samadhi's watery eyes while she continued to shake her head to stop whatever evil was invading her mind.

Taking a quick look at the deceased man, Mara crouched down ignoring the blood as she started to search inside his pockets for anything that could be useful to them. Rosie looked around knowing they didn't have much time as the whole staff were searching for her.

"Hold this." Mara stated handing Rosie a taser before handing her the only gun she found on him. "You know how to use one?"

Rosie shook her head feeling quite intimidated by the weapon in her hands as Mara stashed the taser in her own pocket. "I don't think so."

"It's easy," Mara explained grabbing the gun out of her hands and pointing to the door, "you take the safety off, point, and shoot before they kill you. Stash it in the back of your pants."

Rosie did as she was told putting the gun in the back of her pants as Mara tended to Samadhi. "Sweet, you can't cry right now." Mara spoke crouching down to her knees as Samadhi sat at the edge of the bed doing her best to control herself. "I need you to get yourself together."

"I'm trying." Samadhi uttered as the two other girls continued to help her out by validating her emotions and guiding her out of the negative trance she was in. "I, I didn't want to kill him, Mara."

"I know, sweet, I know." Mara gently empathized before snapping her head to the door as a knock was heard. "But we have to go. They're here for Rosie. Are you ready?"

Samadhi stood up nodding taking a breath avoiding any eye contact with Rosie. She didn't like it when anyone saw her in the state she was in. She didn't want anyone to see her go through an episode. The only people she trusted was Jess and Mara. They were the only two people who have been able to bring her back.

Another knock was heard, this one a bit louder than the first. It was definitely more aggressive. The girls could hear a card swiping trying to open the heavy door.

"Do you know what we're doing?" Jess asked helping Samadhi aware of her surroundings and the situation at hand.

"Escaping."

People were trying to push the door open as the four girls crawled inside the air vents as Jess made sure to shut it behind her. Rosie followed the girls knowing they were her ticket out of here and hopefully to reunite with her friends, especially Newt.

THE GLADERS all jumped up from their seats once Thomas slit out of the the air vent announcing to them that they had to leave. "Thomas!"

The boy looked around for anything to help tie the door shut. "We gotta go. We gotta go. Right now!"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Minho questioned.

Newt shook his head in disbelief, "what do you mean we have to go?"

Thomas rushed through the room as he repeated himself. "We have to go! Come on they're coming for us!"

The boy pulled the sheets off of his mattress rushing to the door to tie it shut. "What happened in there? Thomas can you just calm down? Talk to us!"

"She's still alive!" Thomas explained continuing to tie the sheets.

"Who is she?" Frypan questioned, "Teresa?"

Thomas shook his head struggling with the sheets, "Ava."

"Ava?" Newt questioned not knowing who that person was, "come on just stop and talk to us-"

"It's WICKED!" Thomas snapped this time grabbing the divided attention of all of the boys. "It's still WICKED. It's always been WICKED." Thomas rushed to grab the mattress of the bunk bed as he continued to explain. "They're coming for us and they're coming for Rosie. We have to find Teresa."

Newt stopped his friend asking him, "Thomas what did you see?"

Thomas swallowed as he didn't want to tell Newt what he'd seen but he had to. "Bruises." He whispered, "wounds and blisters all over Rosie's face." All of the boys went silent not knowing what to say. "She's the first on the list. They're going to kill her. They've been trying to kill her."

The British boy shook his head about to untie the sheet to access the door, "where is she? I have to go find her-"

"She's okay, Newt." Thomas explained as he rushed to use another mattress to block the door. "She's with the three girls, she was talking about earlier. We have to find Teresa and Rosie said she'll meet us at a specific spot. We just have to make it there in time."

"I'm not leaving without her, Thomas. I'll tell you that. If she's not with us before we leave. I'm staying to find her." Newt stated as Thomas nodded knowing his devotion for his girlfriend. Thomas understood the boy since he'd do the same for Teresa.

THE FOUR girls jump out of an air vent and into a vacant room. Rosie held herself together as all she wanted was to be back in the glade in the comfort of her boyfriend's arms. Jess counted with her fingers before spotting a small black back pack with a small note on it.

here's the supplies. survive stupids.
i'll see you all on the other side soon.
- kai

Jess folded the letter and stashed it inside her pocket. The girl bit her lip as the closest thing she had to remember her past was Malakai. The girl unzipped the backpack making sure what they needed was inside.

"Good to go?" Mara asked taking a peek out of a window noticing a soldier standing outside the door.

"Yeah," Jess replied zipping the backpack back up before adjusting the straps to carry it on her shoulders.

Samadhi tapped her foot on the floor as she didn't have anything to fidget with. The girl's ability to extend her senses came to a big advantage for the girls as she could tell how many people were in the hallway.

"There's only one." She informed, "who's taking it?"

Jess raised her hand as Mara handed her the taser they stole from the dead soldier. "Rosie, grab his gun after he falls. Mara will check for any other weapons on him. Samadhi stands guard."

"You'll stand guard? With what-"

Rosie was cut off as she felt her personal space invaded. Samadhi took out the gun stashed behind Rosie's pants. "With this." Samadhi notified unlocking the safety and making sure it was loaded.

The Latina didn't want to sound mean but she was curious as to why the two girls would let Samadhi carry a weapon after her episode. "Don't you think someone else should carry the gun-"

Samadhi turned her head an annoyed look formed on her face, "I'm not crazy, if that's what you're thinking. I know what I'm doing."

"Sorry, I'm just worried-"

"Don't be." Samadhi cut her off once again, "we're getting you out of here. We can promise you that."

Mara shushed the two girls as she opened the door to reveal herself and get the attention of the officer. "What are you doing in this section? You're not suppose to be out of your room-"

The soldier walked closer to the entrance of the door immediately falling into the trap the girls made. Jess hid behind a corner in the dark waiting for the man to pass her. The soldier took steps inside trying to grab a hold of Mara before falling limp on the ground. Jess pulled the taser away watching him fall.

Rosie crouched down grabbing the gun in his hands as Samadhi watched the hallway. Mara looked for other weapons but didn't find anything. "Come on, we have to move. It won't take long for the alarms to go off." Jess announced.

"Give me the gun." Mara asserted as Rosie didn't hesitate to hand her the electric gun. "We have to go through the cafeteria."

The four girls run through the halls suspicious of them being all empty. "The cafeteria should be empty. No one works at this hour there." Jess explained taking a peek at the windows. "There's soldiers!"

"What?" Mara asked taking a look herself as she noticed a few armed soldiers conversations with one another. The girl turned her head to Samadhi, "you got it?"

Samadhi took a peek trying to see how many of the soldiers there were. "Got it."

Rosie took a glance herself spotting approximately seven soldiers. The Latina turned her head wondering how they'd let Samadhi take on seven soldiers by herself. Rosie opened her mouth to stop Samadhi from entering but was too late as she walked in.

"You're not just going to let her do it herself, right? That's seven against her." Rosie explained as she herself couldn't fight seven people at once.

Jess shook her head, "just watch."

Rosie took a deep breath looking through the window as Samadhi looked around making her presence known. "Hey, kid what are you doing here? You're suppose to be in your dorms. How'd you get out?"

Another soldier turned his head spotting the three girls who looked through the window. "What's going on?" He questioned before the sound of an alarm started going off. All of the walkie talkies that were pinned onto their chests started going off at the same time.

"We have rescues on the lose!" A man voiced out through the walkie talkie's, "I repeat, we have nine arrivals on the lose! Three test subjects also on the lose!"

One of the soldiers whip out their sticks, "come with me. We're taking you back to your rooms."

Samadhi let's the soldier get close to her as he tried to get a hold of her arm before she gets a grip on his first. The girl twists his arm back causing the man to lose all of his control and fall on his knees in pain. The man struggled to get up as he swore under his breath.

A little smile formed on Samadhi's lips as she glanced at the rest of the soldiers when she twisted his arm a bit more. A scream filled the room once a small pop sound almost echoed. The girl let the go of the man who cried grabbing his dislocated shoulder.

This time two soldiers came towards her as she scanned the room for an item to use. Noticing the trays with leftover food the kids didn't throw away. Samadhi sprints to one of the tables standing on it as she grabbed a tray. Samadhi took a few seconds before aiming the tray and hit a soldier who falls down bleeding from the hard impact on his face.

She grabs another tray as the other soldier was about to grab her feet. The girl uses the tray to hit the man on his head before using her hand to bash the man's face against the table leaving him wounded. The girl turns around to see the last four surrounding her around the table.

Samadhi raised four fingers as Jess grips onto Rosie's arm before rushing with her inside the cafeteria. Mara right behind them heading straight to the restricted door getting the attention of the soldiers.

Using the opportunity for the distracted soldiers, Samadhi jumps bringing one of the soldiers down using her fist to hit him as the three other soldiers head to the three girls. Mara handed Jess the key, Kay had given them to access the specific door.

"You fight, right?" Mara asked Rosie who slowly nodded watching the three soldiers getting closer to them.

"Only when it's necessary." Rosie replied lifting her sleeve up trying to remember everything she had learned inside the glade.

Mara smiled "great, we got this then."

Jess kept swiping the key card over and over again realizing it wasn't opening. "It's not working!"

"What do you mean it's not working?" Mara asked her.

Rosie butted in, "the alarms probably shut down the access to any door."

"Then I need to reroute it!" Jess explained

"Then do it!" Mara shouted

The girl is able to grab a hold of one of the soldiers as she brings him down to the floor. Samadhi finished with the soldier as she heads to the door they came through and bringing a table against it using a wire to tie the handles together. Jess had started working on the router trying to hack into the system.

Rosie ducks the punch from the soldier as she grabs his fist quickly aiming at his throat and kneeing his gut. The man groaned falling to his knees holding his stomach in pain. Mara on the other hand took two people at once. She had one on the floor but was stopped as the other soldier grabbed her by the neck to choke her giving the one on the floor enough time to get up.

Mara jumped kicking the soldier away as she tried to get out of the chokehold. Rosie runs to her, grabbing a hold of the soldier by his neck starting to choke him causing him to let go of Mara. The soldier throws himself to the ground causing Rosie to fall hard on the ground as Mara focused on the other soldier.

Groaning in pain, Rosie could feel a grip on her legs and being dragged away. The girl turned her body around kicking whatever was close to her. The soldier had let go of her trying to dodge her kicks. Rosie jumped up remembering Vince and Gally's training.

Her hand motioned him to come towards her. The soldier cracked his fingers rushing towards her focused only on her. Before the soldier could reach her, Samadhi used a tray to hit the man causing him to fall on the floor unconscious.

"I got it!" Jess exclaimed swiping the card and the door automatically opened. "Come on!"

The four girls rush out of the cafeteria leaving the seven injured soldiers behind. Rosie stops running causing the other three girls to stop when they bump into someone. Janson had been exiting out of a room on his way to stop Thomas and the rest of the gladers. Bumping into the four girls was a bonus for him.

"What do you four think you're doing on this side of the facility?" Janson questioned as he took a notice of Rosie's bruises on her face and the pale shade of color on Samadhi's face. "Another episode, Sammy?"

"The name is Samadhi." She corrected clenching her jaw as tight as she could to control her impulses. "Now get out of our way."

A little smile showed up on Janson's face similar to the one Samadhi showed before taking down a couple of soldiers. "Not over my dead body. You're coming back with me."

Mara points the electric gun at him, "Move."

Janson took out the electric baton, "try me." Mara pressed on the trigger, her heart skipping a beat as the gun was jammed. "Security we have four girls on the loose. East wing, fourth exit."

Samadhi could hear the soldiers heading towards their direction. "Let us through. I don't want to hurt you." She demanded.

"I'm not letting my own niece betray me." Janson professed, "you're not passing through."

Jessie huffs running towards Janson herself as Mara threw the electric gun at her which she used to hit him in the stomach with. Mara goes right after using her fists to collide them with his face before being struck by the electric baton. Rosie rushed to Mara helping her up before she herself felt a hit on her back.

Rosie shut her eyes closed and gripped onto her ears as the sound of two gunshots went off. And the girl remembered, Samadhi was carrying another gun. Opening her eyes, Samadhi had rushed to Rosie pulling her up as Mara and Jess were already at the exit. "Come on!"

The four girls rushed out after Rosie took a peek behind her noticing Janson sitting against the wall. His hands opening his shirt to reveal a black vest that saved him from the deadly gunshots. The man stood up rushing heading the opposite way.

"Find the arrivals! Rosie won't leave without them." Janson talked through the walkie talkie rushing towards the halls to find the Gladers.

Rosie held her tears in as she sprinted as fast she could. She felt her heart could burst out of her chest any second now. The three girls right on her sides running with her. "They're not here!" Rosie yelled worried about her friends whereabouts.

The group of friends hadn't arrived to where they were suppose to meet up yet. Luckily for the four girls, two boys Rosie recognized appeared. "Winston!"

"Rosie!" The boy exclaimed rushing to his cousin as he took in the cuts and bruises on her face. "What did they do to you?"

"Guys, come on!" Aris yelled as the group continued to run following Aris and Winston to wherever they were headed.

A few minutes, Aris turned another corner stopping at a closed door with a single soldier wondering what was happening. "What are you kids doing out here? This is a restricted area zone-"

Rosie and Samadhi sprinted towards the man who realized the two girls were heading towards him. The soldier took out the weapon he had pointing to Rosie who had dodged the electric bullets. Samadhi was quickly able to climb the man as she wrapped her legs around the man's neck cutting his access to oxygen. Rosie grabbed the electric gun pressing the trigger at the man as he fell down unconscious.

"What are we doing here?" Jess asked panting from the run as Aris reached the scanner pad.

Rosie looked around her surroundings to make sure no one else was there. Samadhi could hear the distant yells covered by the soundproof door, "open the damn door!" The girls were able to hear Thomas' voice.

Aris struggled to figure out what the code was. "Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life! The maze is one thing but you kids will not last one day in the scorch. If the elements don't kill you, the cranks will."

The girl stood in place as she didn't know what to do. She didn't have anyway to help her friends on the other side. The only thing she could do was hope that Aris will be able to open the locked door.

All she wanted was Newt.

Rosie was tired. Exhausted. Everywhere hurt. Her heart ached for the boy and his touch. She knew everything would be better if he was with her.

"Yeah, let me guess, WICKED is good?"

The three girls looked at one another not knowing if to wait for Rosie's friends or to leave without them. If they had to, they would.

"What's taking you so long?" Jess exclaimed as she walked over to help Aris since she was an expert at these type of things.

"You're not getting through that door, Thomas." Janson stated the moment Jess and Aris were able to override the system and open the door.

The door started to open revealing the group of friends. "Hey guys!" Aris greeted

Newt looked through the people standing with Aris and spotted Rosie. The boy's eyes widened as he rushed towards her. "Come on!" Frypan exclaimed as they started to run.

"Thomas! Come on let's go!" Newt yelled as he reached Rosie quickly grabbing a hold of her hand and engulfing her into a hug. "You alright?" He spoke his voice breaking mid-word.

His heart breaking as he saw her wounded face as she nodded. He was used to seeing her fighting with the boys in the glade but he never saw anything like this. The outcome was heartbreaking. Especially when he wasn't able to do anything about it.

"I'm okay." Rosie replied holding back the tears she wanted to spill knowing it wasn't the right time. The pair turned their attention to Thomas as the boy started to run once the door was started to close again. "Run, Thomas!"

Everyone started to yell for him in hopes it somehow encouraged him to go faster. Thomas dropped down to the floor sliding through the door that could have crushed him.

Everyone panted and started rushing to find an exit out of the facility. Newt made sure not to let go of Rosie as they ran following the group. The alarm blasted through the speakers warning the soldiers that their test subjects were escaping.

The three girls stuck together feeling out of place with the rest of Rosie's group. Thomas moved the latch opening the door revealing the windy and dark void of sand. Rosie turned her head noticing soldiers from a distance running towards them.

"Come on, we gotta go! We gotta go!"

And so they did, entering what they call the infamous scorch.
