My eyes shoot open. I gasp for breath but they seem to catch in my throat making me cough. My heart's thundering beats echo in my ears as it drums against my ribcage so hard it hurts in my chest. I'm lying on a cold metal ground that rattles under my body. I can't tell where I am. All I can perceive is that it is dark and cold and I'm moving. Wherever I am, it's moving - fast.
I shoot up, crawling backward on all fours before crashing into a wall behind me. A scream erupts from my throat but it only comes out as a weak yelp. I crawl up against the wall hugging my knees as I stare into the gloom, hoping that my eyes will adjust to the darkness. I can't see anything. All I can do is listen to the clanking sound of metal against metal and my own heavy breathing.
My head is throbbing along with the aching of my body. Thoughts and questions feel like a tangled web of confusion, every question leading to a dead end. My head feels like a void. I can't remember anything. How I got there, where I was, who I was, or why I was there. All I remember is a name. Vanya.
No last name. No background. I don't even remember what I look like. With no recognition of where I am or came from, my vision blurs as panic crawls up my spine. I place a hand on my chest in an attempt to steady my ragged breathing. As I do my hand meets something cold and metal on my chest. My shaking fingers fiddle around it until I realize it is a neckless. Even more questions begin to cloud my mind.
Soon, my eyes adjust to the dark and my gaze travels around my surroundings. The room around me seems to be some sort of box or cell, traveling up at a high speed. But where am I going?
Piled boxes and containers surround me. I read the letters WCKD on them. I remember how to read. I remember how to count as I begin to count the boxes as a way of staying calm. But that's it. I can't remember anything else.
Suddenly, I hear a squeal then a thud followed by the box slowing down. The force makes my body jolt forward, falling onto the middle of the cold floor. I bring myself to my knees as my gaze flashes around. Everything goes quiet. I can't even hear my own breathing. Soon I realize it is because I am holding my breath, waiting for whatever will happen next.
My stomach turns as I am hit with a sudden nausea like the feeling after a rollercoaster ride.
Rollercoaster.
A memory from the past. I knew the feeling of riding one. However, the image of one is blurry and unclear. Like I am looking at something distant through a fog.
The seconds feel like they stretch to hours. A long time passes. The darkness that surrounds me prevents me from seeing inches forward. My hand travels over the ground and walls but finds nothing but cold metal. I try to scream but the only thing that escapes my mouth is a weak shrill cry. My throat is dry like I had been screaming. My voice is so familiar yet distant like it doesn't belong to me. I try again and again.
After hopeless attempts to reach someone, my fear transforms into something stronger and more powerful.
Anger.
I begin to pound the walls and floors, pushing down boxes and throwing things against the metal in hopes of it to break.
Suddenly, my body freezes at a mechanic sound above my head. I draw sharp breaths as I press my body against the wall. I keep my gaze plastered on the roof over me. A strong light shines into my eyes making them sting. I immediately cover them with my hand, watching as my surroundings are being lit up. A door in the roof opens with a creaky sound and I can perceive blurry silhouettes from above me. My eyes haven't adjusted to the light yet but voices reveal that the people staring at me are a group of boys. I can't understand what they are saying as the pulsating of my racing heart is the only thing ringing in my ears but the tone in their voices sounds excited like I am a birthday present ready to be unwrapped.
But suddenly the group above me falls silent except for a few scattered gasps. Seconds, maybe even minutes pass where the boys just stare at me and I stare back without really seeing them clearly. A wave of confusion washes over me. Without moving a muscle I hold my breath waiting for the boys to say or do something.
The silhouettes slowly transform into clear images of boys standing leaning over the hole in the roof, staring at me.ย The boys are of various ages but no one is older than twenty.
"It's a girl." I hear someone say but judging by his tone it sounds more like a question. The crowd remains silent as if they are all in complete and utter shock.
"What are you waiting for? Get the poor girl out." Another one says. His demant is followed by a blonde-haired boy reaching his hand out to me. My first instinct is to back away. I don't know these boys or what their intentions are. I take a sharp step back making some of the boys laugh.
"Newt, she doesn't seem to be into you." One of them chuckles.
"I'd hate to just leave you in here." The boy, apparently named Newt, says and stretches his hand closer to me. "I'm no treat."
I hesitate for a moment before finally grabbing the boy who pulls me out of the box like it is nothing.
Suddenly a wave of fear washes over me, stealing my breath. I fall backward and onto the grass-covered ground. The boys form a circle around me, surrounding me where I sit. They all push through the crowd to get a better look at me, staring at me with eager and hopeful eyes. Some eyes shine with a glimpse of danger, prickling my skin as they stare at me like I am a piece of meal.
"Can she talk?"
"Is it really a girl?"
"Maybe she's not really a girl. Maybe, she just looks like one."
"Oh, it's definitely a girl."
"She hot?"
"Beyond hot."
"I call dibs. She's mine."
The boy's words become a haze of confusion for me. They sound more like distant echoes and I find myself struggling to breathe. I want to remain calm and look fearless but the overwhelming emotions constrict my chest.
"Slim it, Gally. She's no ones." A deep voice says. "You're scaring her."
Another wave of questions and chatter washes over the crowd, transforming into a loud sea of mumbling. My head is spinning. Everything is spinning. Everything before me is a haze of unfamiliar faces and lights. I can't see how far the cluster of boys stretches but I believe that there are about twenty of them and every pair of eyes are fixated on me.
An Asian boy reaches out his hand for me, holding it in the air as he waits for me to grab it. I slowly place my hand in his before he pulls me to my feet. I try to speak, try to say something but the lump in my throat prevents any word from leaving my mouth.
"Welcome to the glade, greenie."
