I jumped and turned to face the person standing behind me. I couldn't really make out any distinctive feature about the person, especially in the dark, but one thing I noticed was the very shiny knife which was in the person's hand.
There was a few seconds of silence before the person started walking toward me, and I quickly backed away until I felt my back hitting the wall. At that moment, I felt as if I was a little kid, and the big bad monster was towering over me. My breathing hitched, I couldn't feel my fingers and sweat was profusely rolling down from my forehead.
I couldn't even grasp what was happening, just that I sensed an object being thrown my way and quickly duck. I let out a scream when I heard a very sound noise of something crashing into each other.
When I looked up, I saw that my attacker was gone and let out a huge breath. But when I was about to stand up, I saw pieces of glass on the floor beside me and looked up to see that the shiny knife my attacker was holding was stuck inside the mirror hanging on the wall directly above to where I was.
Now I know the sound of when a knife is thrown into a mirror.
Suddenly, the lights turned on and I saw Breton standing near the stairs with his hands on the switch. His eyes widened as he saw the state I was in.
"Oh my god, Alveanea," he quickly rushed to me and put his hand on my forehead to check if I'm well. Which clearly I'm not, someone just tried to kill me!
It was twenty minutes later, three police cars parked outside of the house, the forensics people taking pictures of the mirror with the knife still stuck in it. There were a few other officers involved in a serious discussion near the entrance and I'm sitting at the dining table as I see Breton answering questions.
"I need you to tell me anything noticeable about your attacker," the police officer looked at me with empathetic eyes and a notepad in his hand.
Right, I'm in the middle of questioning.
"I... I can't answer the question," I said as I took a sip of water.
"Why so?" she prompted.
"Because the person was wearing a black hoodie and pants, plus wearing a mask as well. I don't even know if the attacker was a male or female," I let out a breath, "Uh I guess the only information I can give is that the attacker was not that tall."
She nodded, "Okay, that'll be all for now. My supervisor will brief you on what'll happen next."
On cue, Breton and a Malay guy walked toward me and the officer walked away. He wasn't wearing the regular police uniform, so he must be a detective. Probably the lead detective for this case.
Once again, I'm being looked at with empathetic eyes, "Hi there, I'm detective Ayaz, the detective in charge of this case. You're managing alright, Tiana?"
This is just the seventh time that I'm in a life-threatening situation, no big deal.
"Managing the best I can, detective," I pursed my lips into a straight line.
"Take your time with how you're feeling," he cleared his throat, "So, we've implemented some security measures. There'll be men coming over tomorrow to install facial recognition cameras at the front and back of the house. Since your attacker will be wearing a mask, the camera won't be able to detect a face and it'll sound the alarm. We'll be alerted when that happens as well."
Breton put his hand on my shoulder and anyone could sense meters away that he was freaking out. I gave him a small smile, hopefully to show him that if I, the victim, is alright, he would feel more calm.
"Okay, have you guys started working on the suspects?" I just wanted this thing to be over. I thought the days of me being hunted were over as I haven't poked around anywhere since I left Spain.
Guess not.
Detective Ayaz hesitated for a while before answering my question, "Since your attacker wore a mask, did not kill you when there was an opportunity, was able to break into the house without triggering the alarms and we looked at the security camera footage in the street as well, and it seemed that the attacker knew exactly where the house is."
I looked at Breton with worrisome eyes, I knew exactly what he was thinking as well.
"All these evidences lead to the fact that the attacker is someone you know in real life," detective Ayaz finished the sentence.
There was a few seconds of silence before I absorbed the information and detective Ayaz spoke up again, "So I have to ask, is there anyone you can think of who wants to hurt you?"
Felon, numerous assassins, my parents' enemies, anyone who didn't like what happened between Nicandro and I...
"No."
Wednesday. Four days after the attack, I was finally allowed to go back to school. Singapore is a pretty safe country, not many cases of attempted murder so the police really went in with this one. I was forced to stay in a safe house for three days while they questioned everyone that I know. They also installed facial recognition cameras like detective Ayaz said, have a police officer outside the house every minute of the day, and banned me from leaving the house after seven in the evening.
"So sorry that happened to you, Tiana," Sherwyn said I think for the sixth time today.
Is it normal to feel overwhelmed with the amount of care others have for you? Because that's what I was feeling right then. Before everything happened, the only two people who truly cared for me were Zari and Nikita. Now, I've got my friends in school, Breton and... Nicandro, though I wasn't really sure he does anymore. Maybe he had actually moved on with his life, being the future king of Spain the people deserve, instead of holding on to whatever we shared for just two weeks.
I gripped onto his shoulder with a little force, "Sherwyn, for the last time, I'm okay."
"Alright, but if you need anything, you know I'm here for you," he gave me a small smile, which I can see underneath it he was still worried about me.
"Of course, see you tomorrow," I returned the smile and started to walk toward the teachers' staff room.
I was on my way to meet up with my economics teacher, Ms Zhang. She wanted to ask me some questions regarding this homework I handed up, but really I know that she just wanted to check up on how I was doing.
I reached the front door, and went to the side where there was this telephone, you have to key in the desk number of the teacher you want to reach so they will be alerted. I pressed forty-six and went to take a seat at one of the tables. A minute later, Ms Zhang walked out of the staff room.
"Tiana," she greeted me and sat beside me, "I wanted to ask you some questions regarding the test you took last week, I've finished marking yours."
I inhaled a deep breath. Please be good, I studied for that test.
"I really want to know how you got a D for the for the first test and an A for this one," she chuckled lightly.
I let out that deep breath I was holding.
"I got a really great tutor," I answered honestly.
"Impressive tutor," she remarked.
Twenty five thousand per month has to go somewhere.
"Is there anything else, Ms Zhang?" I asked, my mind on the place I'm heading to after this.
"I know you've been asked probably a hundred times by now, but are you coping okay?" she asked gently. I knew this was coming one way or another.
I nodded my head slowly, "I'm doing okay, just need to feel some sort of normalcy today."
"Good to hear. If you need anything to talk to, I'm always here to listen."
"Thanks, Ms Zhang," I gave her a small smile.
I looked at my watch when leaving school - three thirty pm. I pulled out Google maps and followed the directions to the destination.
Walking towards the place I've been planning to go since I was locked up in the safe house, I felt a sense of confidence and readiness. I pushed the glass door and walked inside, inhaling the smell of fresh lemon. To my left, I saw the counter and approached the women beside the register.
As soon as the woman noticed my presence, she smiled and said, "Hello there, are you interested in any one of our classes?"
"Hi, I want to sign up for the karate class."
