"Oppa? Are you back yet?" Aera's voice asked, as she ran into the house, kicking off her shoes and flopping on the couch tired after playing in the park with her friends.
She realized her brothers weren't home yet and sighed, taking the telephone from the table and laying on the couch, dialling her brother's phone number and holding the receiver near her ear.
"Hello oppa," she said.
"Aera, I'll call you in a bit, I'm in a meeting right now, okay?"
"Oh okay." She nodded, ending the call, ready to dial another number. A small smile played on her lips as Jungkook answered;
"Hey bud," He said in a cheerful voice.
"Hi oppa, when are you coming back?" She asked.
"Maybe in an hour or two?" He said, "There's some work in the studio, and I'm thinking I should finish it today."
"Okay..." Aera said with a pout forming on her lips.
"What happened? Is my little girl missing oppa that much?" He chuckled.
"Uh not that much, but my tummy's hurting a little bit."
"Oh you must be hungry, go and eat something."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I think so. Now go and eat, I'll get back to work. Bye."
"Bye"
Aera sighed, touching her stomach and shaking her head as she stood, heading to the kitchen and taking a bag of chips that Jungkook bought for himself earlier. However she stopped, frowning as she felt something wet and cold on her pants. She looked at her pants, turning back a bit, but couldn't spot anything. The stomachache was just getting more intense at this point, making her lose all the interest in eating anything.
She walked back to the couch, deciding to take a nap for a while as she remembered how Jungkook or Jimin sometimes had sore muscles and said sleep helps. Although she found herself halting as her eyes spotted a weird stain on the couch, she frowned and took a closer look, realizing it was red in color and still wet.
"I didn't spill anything though" she mumbled to herself, trying to think if it was still there when she came home. Her senses kicked in, reminding her to clean it up, no matter how it got there, Jimin gets mad when he sees any stain of juice or food items on the couch and carpets.
She sat on the carpet after bringing a box of tissues and wet wipes, ready to clean the stain that appeared magically out of nowhere. Letting out a faint groan as her abdomen kept tying into knots, she threw the tissues and wipes away, frustrated by the amount of time and effort it was taking while she was in pain.
Getting up from the carpet, her eyes landed down where she sat, finding another stain, "Oh god! What is happening?!" She groaned, stomping on the stain, but eventually stopping as she remembered it was all clean until she sat there. A gasp left her lips, she quickly headed to the nearest room and stood in front of the mirror, turning around a bit and finding a similar red stain on her pants.
Her eyes widened in fear, as she couldn't understand what was happening and how there were so many red stains appearing suddenly. She pulled her pants down, grabbing another new pair of shorts and putting them on, holding the stained one in her hands as she gulped nervously, taking a closer look and realizing it was blood.
She glanced at the mirror, throwing the stained pants away and instantly turning around a few times, checking herself to see if she was hurt anywhere, but visibly couldn't find a thing. Her feet ran towards the living room, scared that she might be having some serious illness and probably dying on the inside.
Her fingers pressed on the buttons of the telephone, holding the receiver close to her ear and praying for Jungkook to answer;
"Aera, I told you I'll take some time-"
"Oppa..." She sobbed as her hands trembled.
"Hey, what happened? Are you okay?" He asked, sounding concerned this time.
"No, I- I'm going to die, there's blood and I don't feel good, oppa come back..." Aera cried on the phone.
"What?" Jungkook sounded confused, "Are you hurt?"
"I don't know, just come back..."
"Okay okay, I'm on my way, don't cry alright? You're not dying."
____
Jungkook grabbed the keys of his car, heading out of his studio after instructing the manager to take care of things, his hand fished the pockets of his pants, pulling out his phone and calling his brother as Aera's scared voice ringed in his head continuously, forcing his brain to think of all bad situations at once.
"Hello, hyung, Aera just called me and she was crying and said something that included blood. I think she's hurt, please reach home as soon as you get this. I'm on the way." He said, sending the message into Jimin's voicemail and taking the driver's seat.
Jungkook focused on the road, frequently honking and glaring at the people who blocked his way, his attention shifted for a split second as his phone started ringing. He received the call, taking it in the headphones in his one ear;
"What happened? I can't understand anything from your message." He heard Jimin's voice.
"Did you leave the company or not?" Jungkook asked.
"Yeah, I'm about to, but my car's having some problem, I guess."
"I'm coming."
Taking a right turn from the big crossroad, Jungkook stopped his car in front of their company. He saw Jimin coming out after a minute as the manager bowed to him and opened the door of the car for him to get in.
"You're quick." Jimin said, "Now will you tell me what happened?"
"Even I don't know what happened, Aera just called me and said she was dying an-"
Jimin sighed, glancing at his phone and seeing their house's landline number showing up, "Yes baby, what happened?"
"Oppa, where's Kookie? Please come back" she cried out, sounding tired now.
"Yes Aera, we're coming in five minutes, stop crying, you don't wanna have a headache, do you?"
"But I'm- I'm already dying... I don't wanna die oppa"
"My baby, you're not dying, love." Jimin said softly, "stop crying, you're my strong girl aren't you?"
"Mm-hmm" She responded.
"Yeah, then stop crying and tell me what's wrong."
"I don't know oppa, there's blood on me and the couch, I don't feel good..."
"What's on the couch?" Jimin frowned.
"Blood"
"and you've got blood on you too?" He asked, getting a yes from the girl, "like where exactly?"
"In my pants"
"...Aera, honey, don't be scared, okay? We're coming home and then we'll talk, yeah?"
Aera hummed in response, before hanging up. Jimin sighed, glancing at Jungkook and telling him to pull up at the nearest convenience store, which made the younger frown.
"Are you serious? She's crying at home, thinking she's going to die and you wanna get snacks right now?" Jungkook asked, giving a weird look to Jimin and earning a smack on his head.
"Just do as I say." Jimin said sternly. Jungkook sighed deeply and stopped the car in front of a convenience store, stepping out with his brother and following him in. He saw Jimin heading straight to the sanitary section, ignoring all the snacks and treats in the middle, and taking a few packs of sanitary pads.
"Uh why?"
"Tell me how old is Aera?" Jimin asked, keeping his eyes fixed on a few more products as he thought which one would be better for a girl who just got her first period.
"She's... uh eight? No, nine?"
"Thirteen," Jimin said, "even if it's not the case, taking these is not a bad idea, we have to be prepared."
"Excuse me, sir?" A lady voiced, making the two turn around, "I think you need some help with those, is it for your girlfriend?"
"Oh no no, it's for my younger sister, she just got her first period."
"Oh I'm sorry, my bad." She said, stepping forward and taking another pack of sanitary pads out of the shelf, "You should take this one."
"Alright, thank you." Jimin said, bowing a little as she smiled and left the brothers alone. "Let's go."
"Yeah," Jungkook nodded, "Hyung, what's this? It looks interesting to me."
Jimin glanced at Jungkook who was holding a tampon in his hand and showing it to him, earning a few silent laughs from a few ladies who were probably in their mid forties. He sighed, lowering his head in embarrassment as he snatched the tampons from his younger brother's hand, keeping them back in their place and dragging him to the counter.
"What?" Jungkook asked.
"Can you stop acting like a kid for a second?" Jimin whispered. Jungkook blinked a few times, before gaining his posture as he cleared his throat, standing straight. The elder paid quickly and headed out towards their car.
"You were holding out tampons," Jimin said, once they sat in the car, "it works similar to pads, but the way it's used is different."
"Oh, why didn't we take it then?"
"Because I don't think Aera will actually want to use tampons right now." Jimin sighed, "I feel like you and Aera, both need some sex education, especially the menstrual one."
"No, I don't." Jungkook said, "I know everything I'm supposed to know."
"Yeah? That's why tampons looked interesting to you?"
Jungkook went silent at that, feeling a bit embarrassed for not knowing and probably making a fool himself, "No wait, how do you know all that?" He asked, squinting his eyes at the older brother, earning another smack on his head.
"I had a girlfriend, remember?" Jimin rolled his eyes, "and also, I was pretty good at biology in school."
Jungkook nodded, "Thank god you're here hyung, it'd've been so hard for me to confront Aera alone and tell her about all the things."
Jimin chuckled and shook his head, "It's not like that, if I weren't here, then you'd be the eldest and as the eldest you'd have to do a lot of stuff, and I believe you can do it."
"But I don't have to bother now," Jungkook grinned, earning an airy chuckle from the elder, pulling in the driveway and making their way inside the house to see their sister wasn't dying.
"Aera" Jimin called, looking around the living room and saw her sitting on the floor, her legs folded up till her chest and face buried between her arms, crying. "Aish, kiddo don't cry." He said, kneeling down in front of her.
She lifted her head up and Jimin noticed her bloodshot eyes and wet, puffy cheeks, making him chuckle slightly. He wiped her tears and patted her head, "You're okay," he said.
"No," Aera sobbed, "something is wrong, I feel so weird and my tummy keeps hurting..."
"I know, baby, C'mon we'll do something about it, get up first."
Aera sniffed, rubbing her eyes and stood up, feeling her brother holding her arm and turning her around. Jimin hummed seeing the red stain on her shorts and patted her back, gesturing to come upstairs to her room, while Jungkook just followed them silently, holding the bag with menstrual products.
"Ri, the first thing I want you to do is stop crying. Everything is okay, and the blood doesn't mean you're dying. It's normal." Jimin said.
"Normal? How is this normal? It means I'm hurt very badly... Why are you saying that? Koo..."
"He's right princess," Jungkook said, and added on instantly to avoid any questioning for himself, "-just listen to what he's saying."
"Get in the bathroom," Jimin said, patting her back as he entered behind her and told Jungkook to wait outside, "Take your pants off."
Aera did as he said and stood confused, staring down at herself as she was only wearing her underwear and t-shirt. She looked up at Jimin who gestured to her to take off the underwear as he brought another clean one from her closet. She sat on the toilet watching Jimin doing something with her new underwear and a white thing in his hand.
"What is that?"
Jimin glanced at her and knelt down in front of her, keeping the stuff aside, "It's called a sanitary pad, it helps girls when they're on their period, means when they're bleeding."
"...what?"
"It's okay, you'll understand eventually." He chuckled, "Now listen, every girl experiences this, starting from when she's growing up, like you're growing up at this time and that's why there are a lot of changes going on inside your body, and because of these hormonal changes, girls start their period, which means they bleed once in a month, or around 28 days to be specific."
"Bleed once in a month?" Aera gasped, "that is so dangerous!"
"No, it's not," Jimin said, "In fact, it's actually a good sign, it means your body is working properly and you're one step closer to being a woman. And you know all the women are so strong right?"
"Mm-hmm" she nodded, "So I'm, like becoming a woman?"
"Yes," Jimin chuckled, "Riri's growing up."
Aera stayed silent for a moment, as if taking in Jimin's every word carefully and nodding her head slowly, "Woman part is cool, but why bleeding?"
"Have you heard of something like reproductive health?" Jimin asked.
"Yeah, it's in my book." She said,
"Great," he smiled, "then I assume you know a few words I'm going to use."
He saw the girl frowning in confusion, making him sigh as he thought of how to explain the menstrual cycle to his sister without scaring her. Even the terminology seemed heavy, how was he supposed to tell uterus, vagina and ovary without actually saying uterus, vagina and ovary?
"Uh see, there's a thing called uterus inside girls' bodies. In older women, it is where the baby develops during pregnancy. In younger girls, like you, since you are not pregnant, the wall of the uterus sheds every month, in the form of blood and mucus. You can see it as a throwing- out-the-waste mechanism."
"...I don't get it"
Jimin sighed, pressing his lips together and shaking his head, "It's fine, we can talk more about it later. Wear your clothes for now."
"How? This is..." Aera pointed at the pad on the underwear. Jimin nodded and helped her wear it, trying to hold his laugh at the sight of her making a weird face and standing awkwardly. "I feel weird..."
"You'll get used to it, don't worry."
"Do you- Do you feel like this too?"
"What, why- Oh! No no no, boys don't have periods, girls do." Jimin said.
"Why?"
"Because boys and girls have different hormones for this."
Aera nodded and walked out of the bathroom slowly, still not being that comfortable with something stuck in her underwear. Jungkook stood up from the bed, watching her walking like a penguin and glancing at Jimin who was covering his mouth to prevent himself from laughing.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, do you know I'm becoming a woman now?"
"Oh yeah, that's great." Jungkook smiled, ruffling her hair, "but why are you walking like that?"
"because I feel weird... uh what was it?" She asked, glancing at the eldest brother.
"the pad?"
"yeah, that, I'm not used to it."
Jungkook chuckled softly and nodded, leaning down to kiss her head. She smiled, holding his hand and ready to walk out of the room, but stopped at Jimin's voice as he told her to put on her pants.
____
LATER AT NIGHT_
"Oppa" Aera whimpered, letting out a few tears as she rolled on the bed, clutching her abdomen.
Jimin opened the door to her room and went in, sitting on the edge of the bed with the heat packs for her as he was aware of the cramps she was getting. A sob left her lips, moving closer to Jimin and hugging his hand, mumbling something which he couldn't understand at once.
"I don't wanna be a woman..." She sobbed, "it hurts."
"My child, it's not like that, Aera" Jimin said softly, "You know girls are so strong that's why they experience all the beautiful things, they become amazing mothers, caring wives, awesome friends and lovely sisters like you. Boys can never do that, the world is incomplete without women, and for all this, a little bit of pain is worth it, isn't it?"
"I'm lovely?" She said, peeking out from her blanket.
"Obviously" Jimin confirmed, chuckling at her for catching just one word that interested her in his whole inspirational speech. "All the girls are lovely."
Aera sniffed and shifted to make more room fro Jimin, "Cuddle?"
"Sure," He smiled and laid near her, patting her back as he hummed a song to distract her from the pain and put her to sleep.
