Chapter 9

Both of their restraint hands automatically move towards the seat belt to pull it in front of themselves. But the metal digs into their skin and they both rush to place their hand on the armrest.

Aariz's hand lands first with her hand almost an inch above his in the air. He smirks as he pulls the seat belt with his other hand. She grinds her teeth and looks away placing her hand on her thigh.

"You can put it here.", he moves his hand making her grimace in pain. Her hand glides over the armrest.

"You can't drive with one hand?", she smirks as she moves her hand towards the steering to allow his restraint hand to reach it.

"I can, okay. Speak for yourself. You can't even drive."

"I don't need to. I have you as my incompetent chauffeur."

"First of all!" he turns towards her. She places her other hand on the armrest turning towards him. She arches a brow at him. He pauses acknowledging her breathing inches away from his face, "I am not incompetent."

"At least you admit the chauffeur part.", she scoffs. His eyes shift from her eyes to her lips.

He mumbles with his head down, "What is your PROBLEM!"

"WHAT IS MY PROBLEM?", she inches closer with her eyes burning fire, "What's YOUR problem? You seem to never accept the fact that you can be second best sometimes. Or may not even be on the list."

"At least I try!"

"You try?", she scoffs rolling her face to her side, "You cannot admit the defeat so easily. Can you?"

"There is no defeat in life. Just lessons."

"You don't surrender to the circumstances. If I may reframe my sentence. Sometimes bowing down is the best thing we can do when there are a lot of people of your caliber in the same room."

"Bowing down and to you? NEVER! And for the record I can drive with one hand. But just not today.", he mumbles, "I don't need to humble myself when I have put in all my efforts to earn something."

She blinks in disbelief. Her lips part as she exhales the air of exhaustion. The sandalwood fragrance dances around her making her realize the dangerous proximity to his face. "Whatever!", she pulls herself away from the armrest and leans back in the seat. She closes her eyes and falls into the world. Her world of words.

Not walking anymore because it kills.
Cutting me open, the spells you cast.

Aariz starts the engine and glances at Selena's arm on arm wrist. His eyes follow upward watching her body rhythmically rise and fall as she breathes. Her pupils move underneath her closed eyes lids as if she lives in a whole new world lying behind her closed eyes. Her perfectly laid plan is ruined and thrown into the dump by a ridiculously sadistic prank. Scrolling through her emails she finds the pathology handout. Despite clicking on the pdf file multiple times it is taking forever for it to open. No connection. The small box pops up.

(Aariz's POV) Bow down. What am I? I don't bow down to anyone except God. I am sufficient enough to carry out any task. At least I can drive.

Aariz starts with one hand but the steering wheel feels too heavy to control with one hand. He purses his lips focusing on controlling with one hand that he forgets to read the speed board. A horn from behind awakens him and his hand flies back into the place. He picks up speed.

Selena slowly opens her eyes, her thoughts put to brake by the honking cars and a yank on her wrist. Finding his hand at the steering wheel she smiles to herself under the mask.

"Biting a humble pie.", she stares out of the window.

He breathes in. His jaw tightens, "Can you just let go of it already.", something about his voice makes her almost shrivel to death. Maybe the seriousness or the dangerous anger of a man can make a woman slow her steps down not because she isn't strong enough but because of the beast, she might unlock.

Aariz looks straight ahead unapologetic about what he has done. He feels proud of finally making her bite her tongue.

She shuts up, staring out of the window watching the sun melting into the darkness. The purple-pink flower bed on the roadside being picturesquely beautiful invites her to jot down the words about them but her apologetic eyes watch them rush past her into the past of little insignificance. As she melts into the seat again she searches the pathology handout in her downloaded files hoping she has it. When she finally gives up her search she opens her Teach Me Anatomy App to revise the mediastinum, the compartment between the two lungs and their pleura.

Aariz parks the car in front of a club. She almost jumps at him to pour her bottle of questions but something tells her to keep her mouth shut. She stares at him as he calls the man who doesn't answer. Aariz clicks his tongue tapping on the screen.

A ping makes him look up, "We have to wait in there. He said he'll meet us there."

She wants to object. She wants to tell him she can't. But she nods. Anything to get her hand out of these shackles. Anything to get away from his sardonic smile.

When Aariz looks up, he finds a momentary glimpse of unsettling hesitation in her eyes. He opens the door. She unlocks her seat belt and moves closer.

As Aariz steps out she sits on the armrest. He offers her his restraint hand but she grabs the seat edge and jumps out, "Let's get our freedom back. I won't like to see you again for at least a decade.".

Aariz pulls his hand back running the fingers through his hair with restraint Selena's hand in the air.

"I would rather you invite me to your wedding only. Oh wait, that's never gonna happen. So enjoy, for this may be our last meeting." he bends down to see her face. She wants to move backward but crashes into the heated car's body. Her eyes almost catch his eyes but he straightens up and turns around to walk in front of her. She could have witnessed how his honey brown eyes turn coffee brown in the absence of the sunlight that illumes them.  The wind in his hair makes baby snakes fall on his forehead. She drags her body behind him unsure whether he smiled or she is hallucinating.
