Chapter five:

Shaylee was at school again, and this time she wasn't alone. She spent the majority of her day with Calvin and Melvin, although she couldn't directly talk to Melvin considering everyone thought he was dead. She'd learnt that Melvin died two years ago when he was presumably 'thirteen/fourteen', he died from a Shadower attack much like what would've happened to Cooper, Calador and herself if nobody was there to help them. It also explained why everyone rumoured Calvin to 'be crazy' because he was constantly seen muttering to himself, when in actual fact he was just communicating with his brother.

"What class have we got now?" Shaylee asked, as she walked to the left of Calvin.

Calvin looked down at the crumpled piece of paper which was his schedule, "History, B45, with Mrs. Loft." Shaylee let out a loud groan, making people turn to eye her. Hiding her blushing face by looking down, they continued down the hall. She'd had Mrs. Loft yesterday, she was a tall, thin, cranky old woman who had an obsessive need to make her students uncomfortable. She always called on the people she knew were shy, or people who didn't have their hands raised- and her target at the moment was Shaylee. "Don't worry, I'm pretty sure Calador transferred into this class." Melvin encouraged, his face smiley as usual. "Transferred? Why?" Asked Shaylee as Calvin grasped the door handle, "Well his class was right beside us. Guess he transferred to ease you a bit, we kinda told him how Mrs. Loft kept targeting you." Shaylee went bright red, but didn't say anything in response as the trio filed into Mrs. Loft's history class.

Calvin and Shaylee took their seats by the back, with Calvin by the window and Shaylee in the aisle. She blinked, and suddenly Calador was in the seat in front of her. Calador turned around in his chair, a sly grin on his face. "Don't worry Shayz, I gotchu." He winked, and turned back around, shrugging his signature denim jacket into place. "Shayz?" Shaylee whispered, leaning over her desk with a grin on her face. "Yep. That's your name now."

"Can I call you Cally then?" She was practically leaning inside his ear now. A grin broke out onto his face but without turning around he answered, "Whatever floats your boat." With a singular laugh, Shaylee slid back into her chair beside an amused looking Calvin. "Cally." Melvin snorted, his figure standing behind Calvin's chair.

Mrs. Loft walked in, her face sour and her grey hair twisted into a tight bun. She set her bag on the table, and scanned the students with an angry, sour sort of expression. "It looks like she just sucked on a lemon." Melivn commented, making Calador snort rather loudly. Mrs. Loft's eyes immediately snapped to Calador's grinning face, her face got madder if that was possible. "Mr Rivers." She drew his name out, like she disliked him with a great passion. Everyone turned their hands, and eyed Calador who just sat there unfazed. "I think you have the wrong class, if you could just gather your things-"

But Calador cut her off by clearing his throat obnoxiously loudly, "My transfer forms are on your desk, Mrs. Loft." Calador said in a sickly sweet tone, as if to infuriate her more. "Mr Calso," He says in reference to Tom, "Has already signed them." A pure look of utter distaste crossed her face, as she scrunched her crinkled nose. Mrs. Loft didn't talk for a moment, then she cleared her throat. "That's alright, I suppose."

Calador lent back into his chair, two of his chair legs lifting and a satisfied look on his features. "Mrs. Loft really loathes me, she won't do anything to you Shayz while I'm here." Calador confirmed, with a smirk. Surprisingly that was very soothing, in an odd way she was glad Mrs. Loft disliked him.

The rest of the lesson went by with ease, Mrs. Loft called on Shaylee once- but when she did, a deathly glare grew on Calador's face, "Miss Davey," Shaylee perked up from scribbling her notes, her eyes wide in mortification. "When did the industrial revolution start?" At her teacher's question. Her mouth opened and shut again as she tried to remember. "Uhm- erm-"

"Seventeen-sixty." Everyone's heads snapped towards the masculine voice, of which belonged to Calador. Mrs. Loft scribbled on the white board, "Thank you, Miss Davey." A few chuckles arose from the crowd, but Calador couldn't care in the slightest. A light blush swept over Shaylee's cheeks, as she saw the reflection of Calador in the window. He was smirking in pride, and as if sensing her gaze he winked. Mrs. Loft didn't dare ask Shaylee, or target her again after that.

It was after school, and instead of going home she went to the Shayne's instead. She was teleported by Calvin, because it was way more efficient than walking. She slid off Calvin's back, her legs like jelly as Calvin also let go of his twin's hand. Shaylee felt worse teleporting then she did riding on Cooper's back. Green light faded from around the trio as they landed inside the foyer of the house. Melvin reached out to steady her, but his hand went right through her sending a slight shiver in the area he tried to touch. Calvin grasped her hand instead, and it felt like the room was spinning. "That normally happens the first time." Calvin reassures, leading her to the couch and making her sit down. If Shaylee could roll her eyes without vomiting she would, "I feel like I'm gonna puke."

"Try not to, I just cleaned the rug!" Vlarissa whined from the kitchen, her 'friendly' demeanour now replaced with one of friendship. Seemingly out of nowhere the River brother's appeared right at her feet, and her eyes shifted as a sudden breeze flowed through the now open kitchen window. Vlarissa shut the window with a huff, "You know we have doors right?" Vlarissa's arms crossed over her chest, which drew more attention to her cleavage bound in an exposing leather shirt. Shaylee wished she embodied that confidence. "I know, it doesn't mean I have to use them." Calador winks, and Cooper just gives her a sheepish smile. "Sorry Vla." Vlarissa rolled her eyes, and made her way back into the kitchen. "Couldn't be bothered to cook today, so how about we go to 'Peter's' for dinner?"

Shaylee swallowed rising reflux, "Who's Peter?"

Peter wasn't a person. Well he was once, but the Quotidian man was long dead. Shaylee shivered, she really needed to wear warmer clothing. Winter was well in action, however it wasn't snowy yet. A cooler breeze had begun to coat the nights of Esoteric, but Shaylee was still adamant that it wasn't cool enough for a jacket. Yet she was wrong every single time. "Cold Davey?" Was Ryder's attempt at teasing, a curl formed on one side of his lips as he watched the poor girl shiver. "No." Her eyes narrowed, watching his smirk grow. Ryder had so much satisfaction from teasing Shaylee, but she vowed never to bite the bait. Cooper shrugged his varsity red and white, signature jacket off and draped it over her shoulders. Shaylee looked up at him with a slight blush, "Dunno why I wear it, I'm cold all the time anyways. Vampire perk." He chuckles, as Shaylee pulls the jacket tighter to her petite body. The smell of men's cologne and spearmint toothpaste engulfed her senses, she felt overwhelmed by the smell. The tingling sensation that was running down her spine wasn't from the cold, but Shaylee was too oblivious to release it was from the way Cooper Rivers was looking down at her. An obnoxious clearing of the throat came from both Calador and surprisingly Ryder. Calador grabbed Shaylee playfully by the arm, and narrowed his eyes at his younger brother. "Back off Rivers." He laughed playfully, dragging Shaylee in the direction of the fluorescent light that spelt out 'Peter's' in purple, and yellow. "Shayz is mine." So with Ryder huffing and rolling his eyes, Cooper blushing but trying to hide it, the twins giggling amongst themselves, and the two girls trying their hardest to keep a straight face, the seven of them made their way into Peter's. As they stepped inside Peter's, Calvin uttered her a useful fact. "Peter's is most famous for their pizza," He paused, "Their milkshakes are decent though." It was like she'd just stepped out of Esoteric and into an Archie Comic, Peter's Pizza was similar to how she'd imagined 'Pop's Diner'. Peter's was decorated head to toe in vibrant purple and electric yellow. The booth's lined the outskirts of the diner, the cushions of the seats were purple to yellow, and the chequered floor beneath them was a contrasting red and white colour. A purple counter was folded in a 'C' shape, and behind it was two large pizza ovens. A board with everything that could be ordered hung above the counter, and flashed brightly as it displayed the professional looking food.

Vlarissa led them to a purple booth in the corner of the left side, and slid into the seat which looked out into the back window. Calvin, Melvin and Cooper sat beside her, shuffling down as a new person sat. Calador, Ryder and Shaylee sat on the opposite side with her sitting between Vlarissa and Calador as she met the other girl in the middle of the semi-circle.

"We'd sit in a yellow booth, but Calador's such a messy eater he'll stain it." Vlarissa smirked.

"Again." Cooper added with a chuckle.

Shaylee gave Calador an amused look, to which he batted his eyelashes and grinned. "Sarah's fobode me, from the yellow ones."

"Sarah?"

"Peter's great great granddaughter." Ryder clarifies, "It's a family based business."

As if on cue a woman who looks around Vlarissa's age- actually around the age Vlarissa's 'magic matured' halts at their table. She gave them a charming smile, taking a pencil from behind her ear which was hidden behind her honey blonde, ponytailed hair. "What can I get you all?" Her voice was as sweet as honey, Calador's smile visibly grew. "Hi Sarah." Ah, this was the famous Sarah from Peter's. Sarah gave him a charming smile, revealing her perfect pearls. "Hi Calador." She said with a half-laugh. "Calador fancies her." Melvin pipes up, knowing full well that the Quotidian couldn't hear him. Calador's smile stretched thin, his lips pulling tight over his teeth. "Shut up." He hummed from his throat. Sarah waited patiently for an answer, and Ryder spoke up awkwardly. "Uhm, just the usual thanks."

Sarah gave him a thankful smile, "So one large, extra cheese." She mumbles to herself as she writes it down, "One large pepperoni, and-" Sarah counted each person, skipping Melvin. "Huh." She grins scribbling on her notepad, "And six milkshakes this time." Sarah looks up her eyes meeting Shaylee who gives her an awkward smile in return, "Hi! You must be new. I'm Sarah Miller." Her doe eyes twinkle brightly, "I'm Shaylee Davey." She gave Sarah a small wave.

"Well Shaylee Davey," She paused, "What milkshake would you like? Or would you like something different?"

Shaylee shifted awkwardly, she hated being put on the spot. "Uhm- strawberry. Milkshake. Please." With a final nod, Sarah walked away and back to the counter, leaning over it and making the back of her thighs show from underneath her small, yellow waitress dress. Calador tilted his head, taking in the view. That was until both Shaylee and Vlarissa kicked him in the shin from under the table. "Ouch!"

"No ass scoping while I'm here." Vlarissa rolls her eyes.

Calvin was looking past everyone and by the front door, "No, c'mon. Don't say that." He mutters under his breath, making Shaylee eye him in a confused way. "Who's he talking to?" She asks no one in particular, Melvin is the one who decides to answer. "A girl. She's just died." Shaylee follows both the twins' gaze as they are the only ones who supposedly 'see' her. "It's ok, you're going to be okay Polly." Calvin mutters, with a weak smile on his lips.

"How come we can't see her?" Shaylee asks, still staring at the spot which was seemingly empty in her eyes. "Well, we only see Melvin because he has unfinished business." Vlarissa answers in a thoughtful tone, "But obviously she doesn't, Calvin will just talk to her for a bit, let her know she's dead and where she's going. He'll calm her down a bit."

"Passing is quite scary." Melvin adds, "But you'll be okay Polly, trust me."

"And Melvin can see her?"

Melvin gave her a 'Yes. Duh.' expression, "Well I am a ghost too." Yeah, she should've guessed that would be the answer. A crisp cool breeze made its way through the diner, and Shaylee visibly tensed. But upon looking around, no window was open, and nobody had walked through the door. "Hi, what can I get you sir?" It was another waitress's voice, and at her words a shiver ran down her spine. As everyone focused on Calvin, Melvin and 'Polly' Shaylee's eyes fluttered across the room, and landed on a man sitting at a booth to the left of her. He muttered something to the waitress, and with a small smile the brunette woman went to go retrieve his order. As the woman moved out of view, Shaylee's breath hitched as she stared into the familiar, evil smirking face of the man. It was him. The shadow man.

Without blinking, he stared directly at their table. His evil smirk grew, and the light's of the diner began to lightly flicker. "C-Calador." Was the first name to stutter from Shaylee's mouth. Calador looked down at her, brows woven together in confusion. Then the rapid tugging of the bottom of his denim jacket, is what made his eyes flick from her horrified looking face over towards the booth she was staring at. "Vlarissa." Calador said through his teeth, throwing his arm in front of Shaylee. Everyone was confused now, but after spotting Calador's face as still as stone, and the horrific look on Shaylee's features, they all turned to follow her gaze. Surely enough as everyone's eyes flickered in his direction, the lights went out making Shaylee whimper, and mutters arise from everyone in the diner. The light's flickered back on, and when it did the man was gone.

"Where's Cooper!?" Vlarissa stressed.

Everyone looked over to see Cooper's seat empty.
