Chapter eight:

Training sessions were scheduled every day after school now. To be perfectly honest, Shaylee would rather shove a pencil in her eye. She'd only had two other training sessions, after the first one and boy oh boy did she hate it. Most of the lessons were with her standing there, her eyes closed, with her hands extended in front of her. Nessa was the one who'd decided to take charge of training her, so far they'd gotten nowhere.

Shaylee slammed her locker shut, with a low huff escaping her lips. "Mad are we Shayz?" Her hazel eyes flickered to his playful face, a grin laced his lips even with her deathly glare piercing him. "No, I'm perfectly hunky-dory."

Calador's brows furrowed in amusement, and as Shaylee stormed down the corridor he jogged after her. "Hunky-dory? Haven't heard that one since the eighteen-hundreds." Shaylee rolled her eyes, as the pair continued to stroll towards their p.e class. When Shaylee didn't speak, Calador piped up again. "Look, Shaylee. Don't be too hard on yourself, you're not expected to be able to harness your powers in three days!"

She threw him a pointed look from over her shoulder, "When did you learn to control yours?"

A look of calculation crossed his face, "Well being a Fae, that was all I knew. It was normal to have powers. So my abilities came naturally," He paused, "But once I got turned into a vampire- it was like having to learn everything all over again." Calador fell into step with her now.

"It roughly took a few weeks before I felt normal-ish again."

"A few weeks!?" Shaylee sighed.

Calador gave her a weak smile, "Look. It was easy for me, because my Fae ability was 'super speed'," They rounded a corner, "And considering Vamps have heightened speed anyways, I was like super duper duper fast. You have a more complex ability to control." It made sense in a way.

Shaylee let out a singular laugh, "Is that why you were teasing Cooper about being faster?" Her angry mood was lessened now. A cocky smirk replaced his grin, "Yep. I'll never stop rubbing it in his face." The pair had reached their p.e class, and Calador opened the door swiftly. "Ladies first." Her eyes rolled again but she walked in first anyways, "Just curious. What's Cooper's power?"

Calador chuckled, running a hand through his hair, "Invisibility. He scares the shit out of me sometimes. He could be stalking someone, and they wouldn't even know it."

Another question floated through her mind, "Is that ability rare?" They walked towards the navy blue bleachers of the gym, the same room assemblies were held. Calador thought for a moment, and they plonked their bags down underneath the first row of the blue beams. "I know of one other person who has that ability..." His voice trailed off for a moment, "Rihannon Thorn." A singular chuckle escaped his lips as he spoke the girl's name, he sounded as if he were particularly fond of her. But before Shaylee could enquire more, a loud whistle sounded throughout the gym. Shaylee jolted, and she found the amber coloured eyes of her gym teacher, Mr Carr. "Locker Room now! Get your gym wear on!" Scrambling from the bleachers, she hurried towards the girl's locker, scared to be on the receiving end of Mr C's wrath.

It was raining again, and Shaylee was cooped up inside her bedroom, blasting 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls, almost on full volume. She was preoccupied with reading the third novel of the 'Twilight' instalment, it made Shaylee wonder if she should write about her own supernatural experience?

"Shaylee?" A voice came from the other side of her bedroom door, but as Shaylee twirled around her bedroom, humming, she couldn't hear a thing.

"SHAYLEE?" The voice of her mother called out a second time, startled she turned the volume of her stereo down and opened her door feebly. "Yes?" Pink coated her fair cheeks.

Her mother gave her a playful, yet confused look. "Uhm- your friends, Calroar and Clarissa are here?" She sounded almost unsure as she spoke their names. "Oh! Cally and Vlarissa? Ok, I'll be down in a second."

Maya smiled, turned on her heel, her red hair bouncing softly as she walked. "So that's their names..." Her mother muttered under her breath, heading down the stairs.

Shaylee turns off her stereo, straightens the creases from her dress and leggings then bounds downstairs. When she rounds the corner leading into the living room, she sees Calador sitting at the counter in their kitchen, chatting away to her mother. With Vlarissa awkwardly sitting on the couch, nodding along to what Calador says.

Upon seeing her Vlarissa stands up abruptly, tripping over her heeled boots. "Shaylee." She breathes, cheeks coating red. Calador's eyes snap from a smiling Maya, over towards his friend. He springs up, rushes over and locks her into a hug before she could process. Screw his 'super duper duper' speed. "We're taking you out!" He announces, pulling away just as quick. Her eyes find Vlarissa's who just gives her a 'I had no part in this' look. "Maya said it was ok." Shaylee gave him an odd look, her eyes slightly narrowed. "First name bassist now?" She grumbles under her breath. A smirk makes its way onto Calador's lips, "She likes me." He winks, and turns to Maya, waving goodbye. "I'll have her back, by eleven sharp?"

Maya waves gently back at him, "Ten-fifty."

He winks, "Deal."

Vlarissa awkwardly shuffles over to them, gives Shaylee a one-armed hug and waves gently at Maya. "Bye Miss-"

"Please, call me Maya." Her mother interjected, her blue eyes slightly glazed over. Since Paul, she'd decided against going by Mrs Armani, instead she reverted back to Miss Davey. Must be too painful to bear the last name of the man she loved.

Heels sounded from the stairs, Antonioette strutted in, hair in a loose bun, an electric blue bandana on her head, tan heels, leather pants, and a pink Hawaiian shirt. At the sight of her outfit, Shaylee wanted to gouge her eyes out. "You look lovely Miss A." Calador complimented, batting his eyelashes. Antonioette smirked, and flicked an imaginary bit of hanging hair. "Oh I know," Upon seeing the children near the door, she perked up. "You guys going out? Need a ride?" Shaylee glanced between Vlarissa and Calador, hoping one of them would answer. Calador stepped forward, adjusting his denim jacket which he always seemed to wear. "That's alright Miss A, we were actually going t-"

"GREAT! I'll go get my keys!" Her Aunt chirped skipping into the other side of the house, where the bathroom and laundry was. Calador slumped, running a hand through his hair. "Doesn't take no for an answer, huh?"

Antonioette bounced back into the room like a ball of energy, waving her keys around like it was cash. "Let's go! Whoop whoop!"

So here they found themselves. Antonioette was driving, with another one of Dolly's songs blasting through the stereo. She was dancing, flailing her arms around, using her elbows to drive. The other three were squished in the back, Calador unfortunately was sitting in the middle. He was too big to fit, but it was too late now, they were already driving. Calador's shoulders were hunched forward, as they were too broad to relax comfortably, his face was contorted in distaste and uncomfortably. Vlarissa's chin was in her palm, eyes fixated on the scenery passing by the window.

Shaylee however was trying to resist the urge to stick her fingers in her ears, her face burning crimson from utter embarrassment. "YOUR BEAUTY IS BEYOND COMPARE!" Her aunt was very off tune, "WITH FLAMING LOCKS OF AUBURN HAIR!"

Calador winced as Antonioette's 'singing' was raised. His eyes searched frantically out the window, and a sigh of relief escaped his lips.

"We're here! Pull over!"

Antonioette looked at him in the rear-view mirror, brows woven in confusion. Calador pointed frantically outside, waving his arms about and almost hitting Vlarissa in the nose.

"CAL." Vlarissa hissed, ducking as his hand nearly smacked her face. Ant's lips parted in an 'O' shape, and turning the wheel swiftly to the side, she pulled over, mounting the curb and nearly hitting a tree by the sidewalk. Shaylee grasped the bottom of her chair like her life depended on it, with Calador flinging his arms over both the girls either side of him.

Ant let out a playful chuckle, "Oops. Are you alive back there?" Her muddy brown eyes scanned the 'kid's' expressions in the mirror. She lets out a melodic chuckle, and the click of the doors unlocking sounds. Almost instantly Shaylee unbuckles, grabs the door handle, flinging herself out of her aunt's crisp black car. Vlarissa doesn't even bother opening the door, orange light consumes her and in an instant she's on the sidewalk, inhaling the crisp air. Calador opened the door, and with a wisp of speed he was standing beside Vlarissa, shutting the door gently.

Shaylee stormed over to the driver's side, standing beside Calador. Shaylee lent through the window, inhaling a familiar scent of, "Are you high!? I smell weed?"

Her aunt giggled, "Yes." She glances out the window, then fishes through her glovebox pulling out a small bag full of weed. "Want some?" Ant winks.

Shaylee's mouth fell agape, brows raised. "No! Of course not! Get home safe!" She pulls her head out of the window, and her aunt rolls her eyes. "Okay MUM." Her aunt says childishly, winding up her windows.

Ant reverses, bumping gently into the car behind her. Then she was off, swerving dangerously through the lanes. "She's the most dangerous driver I've ever met." Calador mutters, eyes wide as the trio watch her drive away.

Cool breath flowed out of Shaylee's mouth, and she sighed, turning towards the trio. She didn't even have to ask where they were, the lights screamed it all. Behind Vlarissa and Calador, were carnival rides of every blearing colourful light, some swinging in the air, roller coasters popping out behind the coat of bushy trees. Screams erupted from every part of the fair, and as the roller coaster rose to the top, Shaylee couldn't help but brace herself.

"TA DA!" Calador bent his knees, doing dramatic jazz hands. Shaylee gapes at the place in awe, her face flashing with various coloured lights. She squeals, and without a second thought she sprints across the lush green lawn and towards the flashing lights. "Last one there!" She pauses, "Is the last one there!" She hears Calador laugh, but before she could sprint more a light hand grasped her shoulder and orange light fluttered around her.

Amidst the light, her eyes found the brown ones of Vlarissa. The older girl smirked, throwing her a playful wink. They were in the centre of the fair grounds now, screams echoed throughout the grounds, with lights sparkling around them. The ride that drew her attention the most was the rollercoaster, Vlarissa followed her gaze. "Calador hates them, makes him all queasy." She pauses, "We have to do it." Calador stops in front of them, only half a second slower. He pouts, "Hey! That's cheating! You teleported her!"

Vlarissa grinned, "What's cheating?"

Calador rolled his eyes, a grin on his face. "So ladies, what ride first?"

The girls shared a knowing look, "The rollercoaster!"

Calador's face fell, eyes drifting to the enormous, pink and yellow coloured ride. A groan escaped his lips, shoulders slumping in defeat. "I hate you both."

"DID I MENTION I HATE YOU BOTH!?" Calador screamed, grasping onto the pink beam of the ride. Shaylee screamed shrilly in response, a broad smile on her agape lips. "WHAT CAN I SAY? I'M A THRILL SEEKER!" The screaming stopped abruptly, as they slowly edged to the tippy-top of the rollercoaster. Calador swallowed continuously, trying to keep down the reflux. "You will not hurl. You will not hurl." He repeated under his breath, as the rollercoaster slowed more in suspense.

"Why did we sit in the front carriage?" Shaylee could tell Vlarissa was highly regretting this decision. Vlarissa's face was frozen in a constant grimace, eyebrows woven together tightly. Shaylee peered over their bright coloured carriage, looking at the beaming lights below. They were extremely high, and as Shaylee peered over the beams, she saw people below gaping at them in awe and horror. The carriages jolted, then suddenly lurched forward and streamed down.

"SHIT I LOST MY PHONE!" Someone yelled angrily behind her, making Shaylee let out a burst of laughter. "Don't you dare vomit on me Tim! No, don't!" A woman pleaded, seconds after a loud lurching noise was made, followed by shrieks of horror. They were nearing the middle, and Shaylee was honestly surprised the other two were keeping it together. "Don't vomit!" Calador repeated, hand squeezing Shaylee's left hand tight, as she raised her other one high in the air.

Vlarissa's eyes were squeezed shut, hair whipping in front of her face. "Say cheese!" Shaylee cheered, as they neared the bottom where a camera sat. Shaylee grinned widely, her teeth bearing, eyes wide and red hair hitting the face of the person behind her. A white flash blinded her for a moment, and as they went down more flashes went off, capturing a photo of every individual carriage.

One last scream escapes her parted lips, then there at the bottom and begins to edge slowly towards the end. She grinned toothily, a happy chuckle arising from her. She turned to her two best friends, as the carriage stopped completely. Calador raises the beam instantly, beelining towards the nearest bush and vomiting rather loudly. Vlarissa stumbled out, and towards a tent which had the 'laughing clown' game inside, she plonked to the floor and sat down in a dizzy haze.

"You okay guys?"

Calador lurched forward, his head deep in the bush. He raises a thumbs up in response, then lurches again. "Barely." Vlarissa replies, sprawled out in a starfish position face-down in the grass.

Shaylee gathered the rollercoaster photo, her face was wide in glee, her hair was in the person's face behind her. Calador was gripping the railing tight, eyes wide in horror. A slither of Vlarissa's face was exposed, but most of it was covered by her bushy hair. The picture was perfect.

They played multiple rounds of the 'laughing clown' game, to which Calador won multiple times. He won a huge pink gorilla, which he gifted Shaylee and a small, husky plushie which he gave to Vlarissa.

They played mostly the carnival games, because the rollercoaster was 'enough thrill for one night' Vlarissa had mumbled, her face in the grass.

She sighed, falling back into the built-in chairs. The carriage rocked slightly, making Calador grasp the pole that sat in the centre of it. "Isn't the view just beautiful from here?" Vlarissa mused, hand against the window of the Ferris wheel.

It really was, they could see every sparkling ride from where the rollercoaster sat, near the edge of the show grounds. Couples were sharing pink fairy floss, boyfriends were gifting their partners prizes they had won. Families let their kids run wild in the food court, starring at them with loving eyes. It was truly euphoric. "It's a shame that it's only here like twice a year." Vlarissa sighed, "It'll be back next holidays though."

"It's the last night tonight," Calador added, his hand falling from the pole and resting on his knee. "Then it'll be back around Christmas." He looked down at the fair below, feeling at slight peace. "It's peaceful up here." Calador smiled, as he watched a young kid win a big unicorn.

Shaylee glanced between the pair, "We have to come back. As soon as it's back up."

The pair nodded in agreement, "Let's make a pact." Vlarissa joked, "That no matter what were doing, where we are. Every Christmas eve, we'll come back here and have at least a Ferris wheel ride together."

Calador stuck his hand out, grinning at Shaylee who sat across from him. "You in Shayz?" Shaylee rolled her eyes, placing his hand on top of his. The pair turned to Vlarissa, who sat to the right of Calador. She chuckled, and placed her perfectly manicured hand gently on top of there's. "On three, raise your hand and say 'deal'!"

"I am not-"

"SHUSH. One, two, thre-"

"DEAL!" The three of them laughed like bloody idiots, falling back against the inner wall.

"Guys..." Shaylee kicked Calador in the leg, making him groan.

"What was that for?" But he followed her gaze, she was starring out into the woods that lined the edge, of one side of the show grounds. Emerging from the shadows, was Ryder. His green eyes being brightened from the blue light that radiated from the side of the ferris wheel, casting shadows across his face.

"We need you." From up where they were, his voice sounded barely a whisper which clashed against the backdrop of outside noise. The trio exchanged frightened looks. They all knew what they had to do. They had to get off the Ferris wheel, NOW.
