Then Drew arrived.

HE CAME IN JULY, a researcher assisting her father with a project on ancient poetry, bringing with him a kind of effortless energy that unsettled the stillness. Older, self-assured, and brimming with unspoken stories, Clementine noticed the way his voice carried in conversation, how his gaze lingered like the aftertaste of something bittersweet. His presence filled the rooms without effort, his voice rich, his laughter carrying like notes of a song Clementine couldn't forget. She noticed the way his eyes lingered, how his charm seemed both deliberate and unguarded.
