A CHAPERONE

ARO KEPT TEXTING BILLIE AT THE MOST RANDOM OF TIMES, MEANING SHE DIDN'T RESPOND RIGHT AWAY ALL THE TIME.

During the times he'd text her during the day, it was usually her fault for the held off responses— she didn't want to indulge the vampire too much, and she wanted to play it cool. She had to play it cool, despite one thought circling around in her mind, on loop:

He's your soulmate. Play it cool, play it safe.

But every time she exceeded the five hour mark of giving back a response, he sent Jane. Yes, scary little Jane was frequenting Forks quite often due to the amount of times the Volturi king would message her while she was asleep.

She'd woken up to Jane standing at the foot of her bed once, and the scream she let out surely alerted the entire neighbourhood. Hell, Katherine Burbank swung into the room with a baseball bat, screaming about where the intruder was. Jane was good at vanishing, swinging herself out the window the minute she heard the Burbank matriarch's footsteps start to near.

"Just a nightmare, sorry mama."

"Do you need a cup of tea?" Katherine seemed out of breath by how fast she jumped into action, but was already out the door about to make her daughter some warm tea until Billie stopped her.

"No thanks, just gonna try going back to bed."

She knew her mother would be staying vigilant regardless of the nightmare excuse she used, but thankfully she retreated back to her room down the hall.

Jane reappeared when the door to Katherine's room clicked with a close, all but demanding Billie respond to Aro's most recent message so she could head back to Volterra.

At this point, Billie was getting frustrated. She valued her sleep like no other, and here she was, getting awoken at four in the morning on a weekend.

Rather than respond to the message he'd sent earlier, something about the weather, Billie changed the subject entirely.

Billie
Pls knock it off w/ Jane.
She's scaring the crap out of
me and it's not helping your
anti-creep case, weirdo

The response was instantaneous, as though Aro had been camped out beside his shiny new cellphone and had been awaiting her reply.

Vamp King
Consider it done.

My apologies, amore.
Tell me, what is the
meaning of this "weirdo"
phrase?

Billie
It's a synonym for
the name "Aro"
Predates to 69 BCE
and everything

Vamp King
Very intriguing!
Sei così intelligente,
your knowledge seems
to rival my own.

Billie really didn't think someone's ego could be that large, but this was all mighty Aro; of course his self assurance was through the roof.

Billie
Pls let me sleep?

I'll text you when
I wake up K? Promise x

Vamp King
As you wish.
I eagerly await your
next "text"

:)

The smiley face had Billie putting a hand over her mouth to stop her bubbles of laughter from being too loud. Not the smiley face.

Looking up, Jane was gone, and somehow Billie knew she was headed back to Italy. She really didn't understand the mechanics of it all; did she have a plane ticket booked, or was she going to speed swim across the damn ocean?

The blonde girl collapsed against her pillow, hands over her eyes as she willed them to close once more.

Neither of them had discussed the whole soulmate thing, given that she was positive Aro thought she didn't know about it yet. This was evidently him trying to play it cool too, but it wasn't working at all.

Her life wasn't real, it couldn't be.

"He's the neediest freakin' vampire I've ever met," she groaned, tossing her head back before looking at her friend seated next to her on the couch, "and I've met Edward, your boyfriend who tried to pull a Romeo and Juliet stunt when he thought you killed yourself."

Bella's face flushed. "Yeah, fair enough."

The two girls were in the Burbank living room, a tv show playing aimlessly in the background while their discarded homework was scattered on the coffee table in front of them.

They'd taken a break from their studies in order to recap what was going on lately, and doing well on her promise, Billie told her friend what had been happening this past week: starting with Aro's non-stop messages and ending with Jane making frequent appearances.

That last part had Bella on edge the most. "You think she's here to spy on us?"

Ever since Italy, Bella was paranoid about all things Volturi-related. And honestly, Billie couldn't blame her; they meant business, and were expectant that Bella would turn into a vampire ASAP.

Billie hoped that sentiment didn't apply to her, though... and secretly hoped she had leeway with the vampire in charge because she really did not want to become like them. Not one bit.

Billie shrugged. "I doubt it," she responded. "Every time I see her, the more I can tell that she hates coming here."

Each time Billie interacted with Jane Volturi herself, she could see the distaste swirling in her crimson eyes at even being around humans in general. The Burbank girl seemed to be the exception — either that, or Jane was super good at faking her tolerance — but otherwise she really had no interest in being in Forks.

Bella chuckled, tucking her legs beneath her on the couch. "Sounds like you have a personal chaperone."

"More like bodyguard," Billie mused, a matching chuckle leaving her lips when she thought of the threat Jane eliminated for her just days ago. "She's very dedicated to her craft, it's kinda inspiring, honestly."

The brunette among them shook her head. "Only you can find a way to see something positive in people like Jane," she observed, and it was a fact that Billie was told quite often. "She's an evil vampire but sure, her loyalty to being evil is astounding."

"I'm sure she's just misunderstood," Billie waved off, leaning up from the couch to grab at her yellow notebook. "I'll make a friend out of her yet; just you wait."

Bella all but shivered. "Bill... I don't think that's the best idea," she winced, grabbing for her own notebook too.

"Why not?" the blonde pouted.

"Uh, a) she's evil, and b) she's evil," Bella retorted, and it was obvious that she was feeling uneasy about the Burbank girl's plan to befriend Jane of all vampires.

"I think I'd be a little evil if I was cooped up in a m Italian city that had zero Gelaterias."

"They can't eat, remember?" Bella reminded her, watching as a crestfallen look fell upon her face.

"That's horrible!" Billie cried out.

"Yeah... plus, I don't think it's in your nature to be evil, Billie; you watch those kitten videos all the time."

"Eh, you're probably right about that."
