CHAPTER TWELVE💜

April looks through her bag until she finds what she is looking for. She quickly pulls out her chemistry notebook and pen. She knew she would not be able to concentrate because she was extremely hungry. She did not take a break on purpose because she wanted to spend the money her mother gave her for feeding as efficiently as possible.

She had already spent three-hundred naira. She knew that expecting any additional money or provisions from home was a conversation for another day. Science had urged her to join them, but she refused, claiming she was not hungry.

The voice of the chemistry teacher brings April back to reality. She stares at the man who introduces himself as Mr. Osas. By looking at him, you can tell he does not take nonsense.

He had a pot belle and a bald head. His trouser appeared to be large enough to hold three people's heads. His shirt appeared to be properly ironed. His shoes look like this, I swear to God. April tries to keep a straight face as she wonders what makes him different from her previous teachers. She assumed it was his level of education that had brought him down there. Teachers at Hallel College were qualified and well compensated.

They each studied education in their respective fields. They were not just graduates, but also certified teachers. Hallel Colledge never hires quacks.

"How long will it take everyone to get out their notes?" Mrs. Osas barks. Most of the students mumble, while others grudgingly get their materials, causing some noise in the room.

"You know how I behaved after this class. I might administer my first test." Mr Osas says, causing a commotion in the classroom, and almost everyone starts talking.

"I loathe this man. I am not sure why our worst teachers followed us down here!" Science says to April in a low tone, and April smiles.

"Shut up and get out your notes!" Mr Osas yells. April is taken aback when the class suddenly quiets down.

Mr. Osas walks over to the board and asks a question, causing everyone to murmur.

"The more reason anyone I call to solve this will be punished if he or she does not attempt it!" Mr. Osas says, turning to face the classroom.
"Now, read what is on the board!" He commands.

"0.22Og of anhydrous disodium trioxocarbonate (iv) was reacted with 20cm³ of 5moldm-³ Hcl and the volume of carbon dioxide collected at 23°C and 75mm pressure was 49cm³.
What is the stoichiometry of the reaction?, " The whole class hours.
Meanwhile, Mr Osas nods his head.

"That's splendid. Is Wendy Opurum in the class?" Mr Osas asks.

"Yes sir!" Wendy, who was sitting at the first row, responded by rolling her eyes. She silently wondered if the man was blind or he just felt like mentioning her name.

"What about Nimi Brown?" Mr Osas asks.

"Present sir!" Nimi responds, while April casts a brief glance at him. They make eye contact for a few seconds before she looks away, feeling uncomfortable.

"These are my top students; how about Tibiebi M. Jackson and Flourish Alikor?" Mr Osas asks, while everyone starts murmuring amongst themselves.

"Those that call for noise making?" He asks.

"Flourish Alikor is in the hostel, she isn't feeling well, " Ibinabor responds.
"And Millicent didn't write exams last term, she didn't resume after she was suspended," Ibinabor say. Meanwhile, April couldn't help but glance at her. She had this gentle face, she didn't really know why everyone saw her as a bad person.

"Tibiebi .M. Jackson was suspended?" Mr Osas asks quite surprised.

"Aren't you in this school? "This man is annoying me!" Science comments on April's hearing. While Light chuckles. April knew Science wasn't in the best mood and she was transferring her aggression to the teacher. Who was obviously concerned about the well-being of his students.

"I didn't know she was suspended!" Mr Osas complains.

"It was low key, no one said anything about the matter!" Ibinabor says.

"She was one of my best students." Mr Osas says. " Now let's get back up business, who can solve that?" Mr Osas asks now pointing at the board. He quietly turns to the students who had a serious look on their faces. They made it seem like he imported the questions or such didn't exist. They made it seem like it was the first time they were seeing such.

"That's why I said you all don't study your book, just take a look..., "

"Sir, let me try!, " Nimi interrupts, completely earning everyone's attention.

"Okay!" Mr Osas responds. Meanwhile, Nimi gets up from his seat, all eyes on him, especially April whose eyes never left his direction till he got to the board. They all watch Mr Osas hand over the marker to him.
He starts solving

"Solution"

Amount in moles of Na2CO3 used
= 0.220
106
= 0.002075
=0.0021

Volume of C02 collected at STP

= 49 × 273 × 75cm³
296 76
=43.60cm³
22.4dm³ of CO2 = 1 × 43.60 mole
22.4 1000

" You can't get the right answer, you just solved rubbish, " Wendy says making everyone turn in her direction. Including Nimi and Mr Osas.

Mr Osas quickly takes a good look at the board, carefully studying it. Meanwhile, Nimi couldn't help but step back and starts studying what he was solving.

"Sir!" Wendy calls out.

"She is right, it isn't correct!" Mr Osas says, meanwhile Nimi attempts to say something but find difficulty in doing so.

"Sir, let me solve it!" Wendy says with a smile, meanwhile someone groans.

"Who did that?" Mr. Osas inquires, turning to the class. When no one responds, he returns to the board before facing Wendy.

"Okay!" Mr Osas says to Wendy, who gives a smile that everyone understands, before walking over to the board.

"The marker, please!" Wendy says with a mischievous smile. Meanwhile, Nimi frowns as he releases it. She quickly approaches the board and begins solving right where Nimi had stopped.

"Solution

Wendy pauses and turns back to Nimi who looked expressionless.

"That is where you made the mistake!" Wendy gives a smirk.

"Leave too much talk and solve it!" Tari's voice captures everyone's attention.

"Tari, can you just shut it for once in your life?" Darlintina fires.

"I wonder!" Precious Ovie frowns.

"You both are.., "

"Three of you, get out of this class!" Mr. Osas' words surprise everyone. Including Tari, whose mouth was left hanging.

"Out!" he commands.

After Darlintina rolls her eyes and hisses, the three of them leave the classroom.

"Wendy, continue! That is how I deal with nincompoops; you do not talk in class, and there will be a test afterward." Mr. Osas says. This makes the classroom rowdy, and most people begin murmuring. This results in noise-making.

"If I get you talking, you will join them outside," Mr. Osas says.

"I hate this man!" Science mumbles. April adjusts herself. She knew she should not be kicked out of class. First impression matters a lot.

"Wendy, continue!" Mr Osas says making Wendy gets back to business.

Everyone was watching her closely because they knew Mr Osas was capable of calling someone else out and asking him or her to explain.

"Tear out a sheet of paper." That was the next thing Mr Osas said. Immediately Wendy dropped the marker, most members of the class hissed, some grumbled, but they were careful not to let Mr Osas get them.

"Wendy, you did an excellent job! I know you are still doing as good as you have always been!" Mr. Osas commends. causing Wendy to smile as usual.

"Thank you, Sir!" She responds.

"Nimi, you can see where your mistakes started from. Study that!" Mr Osas says to Nimi who wasn't smiling.

"I will sir!" Nimi responds.

"The test I will be giving now will last ten minutes. The results will be available by tomorrow; you would not want to provoke me by failing miserably." Mr. Osas speaks with a straight face.

"Darlintina, what is the meaning of that rubbish?" Bright asks in rage, clearly putting an end to whatever activity was taking place in the room. Because everyone suddenly became interested in the drama.

"Haew. Boma! You were here with me? I assumed it was a rag. Darlintina responds with an innocent expression on her face. Meanwhile, Bright appeared irritated at her.

"Madam Bright. Please stop making so much noise. You are disturbing the tranquility of this room." Precious, who was sitting on her bed, speaks.

"Darlintina, we know you did this on purpose. This term, you girls are starting to irritate me." Fisayo scowls.

"Look at this little baboon. So, Fisayo, do you have a mouth now? You have grown wings, na." Darlintina says this dramatically, clapping her hands.

"There is nothing that someone will not see at this school. See Ibinabor's puppet too. She now has liver." Boma responds with a mock smile.

"Darlintina, wash this or else, room six won't contain all of us." Bright says, blocking Darlintina, who, surprisingly, smiles.

"What is wrong?" Ibinabor, who had just walked in with Flourish, who appeared pale, inquires of Bright. Everyone turns in that direction.

"I.B, I met Darlintina here using my sunday white to clean her legs. Now she is denying she didn't know it was mine!" Bright complains to her friend.

"She must wash it oh!" Flourish, who suddenly appears ready to fight, says.

"See this one, it's not me that will kill you, as you look like someone who wants to die," Darlintina faces Flourish. Meanwhile, someone laughs so hard, attracting everyone. Most of the girls turned to see where the laughter was coming from, only to see Wendy, who was desperately trying to control herself. She appeared to have just entered. She carefully places her school bag on her bed before pouncing on it. Flourish hisses and turns to face Darlintina.

"Darlintina, you must wash it!" Flourish argues.

"Wendy, see me see case!" Darlintina smiles as she turns to face her friend.
