The Plan
"After the maze, I got picked up by a group headed to the city." Gally explained as we followed him, "They realised I was immune, patched me up, and they brought me here to Lawrence."
"This groups been at war with Wicked ever since they took control of the city. But Wicked can't hide behind those walls forever. Day is gonna come and they're gonna pay for what they've done."
We came to a stop and he turned to us.
"Listen, uh, he doesn't get a lot of visitors. So, let me do the talking. Alright? And try not to stare." He said and walked off.
We jogged down some stairs to a room where plants were planted everywhere and two men stood in the corner.
"Gally, glad to see you made it back." One of the men, who was leaning down, said. He was wired to something.
"It was a slaughter." Gally said with his hands resting on his harness. "There's nothing we could do against those guns."
"No, but they can only poke the hornet's nest so long before they get stung." He smelt a rose, "Now, who are these people? Why are they here?"
"We need to get into Wicked." I stepped forward and Gally shot me a glare with his jaw tensed.
"Gally said you can get us through the walls." Thomas stood beside me.
"Gally should know better than to make promises that he can't keep. Besides, that wall is only half your problem. Getting inside Wicked is impossible."
"There might be a way now." Gally shrugged, "But it doesn't work without Thomas."
"Is that so?" The man stepped out from the shadows, revealing his distorted face with no nose, "Do you know what I am...Thomas?"
He came close to Thomas' ear and whispered,
"I am a businessman. Which means that I don't take unnecessary risks. Why should I trust you?"
"Cause I can help you." Thomas stated. "You see if you can get me through those walls...I can get you what you need."
"What is it that you think I need?"
"Time. Every last drop." I said and his head snapped to me.
"Is that what I need?"
"Seems like it." I mumbled.
"Wicked has something we both want." Thomas told him.
"I'll tell you what. Three can go for now. The rest stay down here with me. Just a little insurance to make sure you find your way back. We have a deal?"
His hand stuck out from his long coat and Thomas shook it firmly.
"Gally, show them the way."
-
Gally removed a drain cover and lowered a ladder down.
"Be careful, y/n." Jorge whispered to me.
"I always am." I winked and patted him on the back.
Gally stood on the ladder and began to go down when Fry spoke.
"Gally, take care of these three." He said.
"Yeah." Gally continued down.
Newt sat down and cradled his wrist. Something was wrong with him and by the looks of it he hadn't told anyone. I'd ask him about it later. We followed Gally down into the drain.
"Ugh. This is gross." Newt gagged.
"Yeah, this is great." Thomas said sarcastically as he moved the flashlight in different directions.
"T, I swear if you don't keep the flashlight still-" I began but was cut off when strung up lights lit up the rest of the way, "Oh."
-
We made it inside the city into the packed streets. Gally's hands rested in his hoodie pockets while mine tapped against my leg nervously.
Some people around us wore face masks, obviously not wanting to catch anything like the flare. I walked in between Newt and Thomas while Gally was in front.
We jogged up a few steps to a platfrom where we could see the whole of the city and the skyscrapers. All the lights looked beautiful.
"Wow." I whispered.
"This is a long way from the glade." Newt said.
"Fifteen minutes to mandatory curfew. Please proceed home in an orderly fashion. Remember this is for your safety. Thank you for you compliance." A female voice rang over the whole city.
"Yeah, we better get off the streets. And I know it's hard, but act like you've seen it before." Gally said and walked off.
We sprinted across a road and flattened ourselves against a window as a car with loud sirens went past.
"They've definitely upped security. I'm guessing you shanks have something to do with that."
"What can I say? We are extremely important." I shrugged.
"Alright," he coughed uncomfortably, "let's get outta here."
We kept low as we continued to run the wall. Once we reached it Gally squatted and held his hand out for Newt, who climbed up and Gally held his hand out for Thomas but he, of course, ignored it.
"Y/n, you're up." Gally stayed in the same position, expecting me to want help.
"I'm good." I jumped up and grabbed onto the ledge to join the other boys.
Gally sighed before joining us. We stayed close to the wall as we finally made it to a balcony where we could see the Wicked building clearly.
"There it is. If Wicked's got Minho then that's where they'll be keeping him." Gally explained while setting up a telescope, "Lawrence has been trying to find a way in for years. Place is crawling with soldiers. They got surveillance everywhere. Scanners on every floor."
"Sounds like a bloody fortress." Newt grumbled as we all rested our arms on the yellow railings.
"Yeah, I though you said you had a way in." Thomas said.
"I might."
"What the hell do you mean 'might'?"
Gally stepped backwards so Thomas had enough space to look through the telescope.
"Take a look."
Thomas looked hastily and after a few seconds his face turned cold and he lifted his head.
"I said I had a way in. I didn't say you were gonna like it."
-
"We are planning on using Teresa to get inside and with Thomas we can do that." I told the others as we stood around a table.
"No there's gotta be another way." Thomas faced us.
"Like what? You've seen the building. She is our only way in." Gally held his arms up.
"You really think she is gonna let us in?"
"I don't plan on asking for her permission." Gally said.
"Am I missing something here? This is the same girl who betrayed us, correct? Same dick?" Brenda spoke up.
"I like her." Gally chuckled.
"Brenda has a good point. Teresa shucking betrayed us. Clearly we don't mean much to her." I told Thomas.
"What, are you afraid your little girlfriend is gonna get hurt?" Newt growled, "Hm? Because this has obviously never been just about rescuing Minho. Has it?"
"Wait, what are you talking about?"
"Teresa." Newt stood up straight, "She's the only reason that Minho's even missing in the first place. Now we finally have an opportunity to get him back. And what? You don't want to because of her?" He walked forward causing Thomas' back to touch the wall.
"Because deep down inside you still care about her, don't you? Just admit it." Newt brought his face extremely close to Thomas'.
"Newt, I-"
Newt grabbed his shoulders and slammed his against the wall.
"Don't lie to me!" He shouted, "Don't lie to me!"
He realised what he was doing and immediately let go while apologising. He turned to the rest of us who were shocked at his outburst of rage. I hadn't seen him this angry before.
"I'm sorry." He said before walking away.
"I'll go talk to him first, Thomas." I nodded before running after my best friend.
He was sat on the roof with his legs hanging over the edge. I sat beside him in the same position but his eyes stayed focused on his lap.
"Hey, Goldie."
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Newt, don't be. What's going on with you? You haven't been yourself the past few days."
"Erm- I- this." He pulled up his sleeve to reveal blue veins running along his wrist.
A hand clasped over my mouth and my eyes widened.
"Newt..."
"I know. I know."
"We are going to make sure you make it out alive. Okay?"
"Okay.. but don't make any promises. I have something to tell you but you must promise not to tell anyone."
"I promise. What is it?"
"It's Thomas."
"He's a person, yes. What about him?"
"I think I'm in love with him.." He sniffed.
"In love- oh, wow. Newt! That's great!" I smiled and hugged him from the side.
He chuckled, "Do you think he likes me back?"
"Newt, to be honest, I have no clue. You should ask him. I'm sure he does."
"I'll talk to him." He turned his head to me, "So, Gally's alive."
"Mhm. He sure is."
"Do you still love him?"
"I think so.. I mean, I haven't seen him in months but every time I look at him I feel something in my stomach, it's like faint butterflies."
"I really hope you two sort your relationship out. I know how hard it has been for you since he 'died'." He did quotation marks in the air with his fingers.
We heard footsteps behind us and Thomas stood there awkwardly.
"How- how long have you been there?" Newt asked.
"A few seconds."
"I'll leave you to talk." I stood up and patted Thomas' back before walking back inside.
