chapter thirty six
"finley harris"
"ALRIGHT, SINCE INERTIA IS A subject of which you all know plenty, why don't we start with momentum?"
Annoyingly, Lynn aimlessly flipped through some of the word filled pages of their science books. She lazily placed her cheek on her fist, already having an overwhelming sense to just fall straight to sleep.
This was nothing new — just Harris' voice made Lynn want to just drift off into a simple slumber from the absolute boringness, let alone the fact she hates any and all science classes.
Even though the last thing she wanted right now was to be Isaac's partner, she had no choice nonetheless. They had been paired up less than a week ago for the current chapter, and she knew there was no way Harris would be kind enough to switch her out just due to the awkwardness.
Lynn turned over her shoulder as she heard Scott speak up, and then her eyes floated over in Isaac's direction. His left leg was bobbing up and down violently, his nostrils were flared, and Lynn could just smell the anger from him.
"Isaac," Lynn whispered as Harris continued writing on the chalkboard, and she gently placed a hand on Isaac's arm, but just as she did before, the boy yanked away from her touch. "Hey, they're trying to get to you, you just have to ignore them."
"Like you did with me?" Isaac countered, venom practically dripping from his tongue. Lynn's nose twitched ever so slightly, but she knew he had every right to be upset, she declined him without even giving him a proper explanation. "I'm good, thanks."
Lynn flashed a sympathetic expression towards Scott sitting behind the two partners, shrugging her shoulders softly to explain there was no way she would be the one to get Isaac off the edge.
"They're here for a reason," Scott whispered behind Isaac's back, but the boy didn't even hover for a second. "Give me a chance to figure it out before you do anything, okay? Isaac."
Before the two teenagers could say anything else, Harris spoke up throughout the class. "Danny, what do we know about momentum?"
Lynn was relieved to know she wasn't the one Harris picked on, and she let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.
"It's the product of mass and velocity," Danny responded, and Lynn pondered whether or not she should ask for the boys questions for the homework tonight. "The more massive something is, the faster it's going—"
"—Mr. Harris, can I use the bathroom, please?"
Lynn switched immediately from paying attention to Danny's answer to the werewolf sitting beside her, and she — with a half surprised half concerned expression, glanced over towards Harris for his response.
The teacher simply shrugged, and then Isaac angrily flung his chair backwards as he stormed from the classroom and right out the door. Lynn glanced towards Scott, making her eyes wide as she silently questioned what the two were going to do about the furiously scary Isaac.
Scott then suddenly jerked up from his seat, pointing towards the now closed down again, "I have to go to the bathroom, too."
"One at a time," Harris slowly moved his head towards Scott, annoyance written all over his face as he rose a simple eyebrow in Scott's direction.
"But I really have to go," Scott interrupted just as Harris swung back on his heels, and Lynn could just see the way he was losing his patience, quickly. "Like, medical emergency have to go."
"Mr. McCall, if your bladder suddenly exploded and urine began to pour from every orifice, I would still respond, one at a time," Harris countered, and Lynn had to give him some points for the dramatic response. "Is that enough hyperbole for you, or would you like me to come up with something more vivid?"
"No, no, that's pretty good," Scott shyly stated, slowly backing away from standing up and then his butt was placed back in his stool.
He switched with worry from the exit door towards Lynn, and the girl slowly sucked in an annoyance breath while closing her eyes.
My mom's going to kill me.
Dramatically, Lynn slammed the half open science book and slid it quickly in her backpack. She grabbed her number 2 pencil, tucking it right behind her left ear as she rose up form her chair — it making an awfully loud squeaking noise as she did so.
"Do you need something, Miss Kennedy?" Harris asked with a deadpan expression, dropping the piece of broken white chalk back on his desk.
Lynn flashed the man a wide smirk, swinging her backpack over her shoulder as she started to walk towards the front of the classroom. The teenagers around her in the classroom all started to let out muffled chuckles and whispers.
"Mr. Harris, you know how much I love your class," Lynn stated, but it quite obvious her tone was riddled with sarcasm. "But today? I don't know, I just don't think I could listen to your voice for another minute."
The laughs of the class then shifted more into gasps of amusement or wild snorts. Harris' cheeks ever so slightly burned red, most likely with anger than embarrassment, and if looks would kill — Evelynn Kennedy would be dead three times.
"That smart remark is going to get you a week full of lunch-time detention Miss—"
"—Sounds like fun," Lynn smiled while turning on her heels towards the door, so she would be walking backwards. "Now I bid you all a good day!"
The sarcastic girl popped open the door with the bottom of her foot, and then signaled towards the rest of class with a captain's salute.
Leaving the mess of the students in her classroom behind her, she entered the almost empty hallway of the school. Her eyes landed on the tall figure of Isaac, and she curiously tilted her head off to the side as to why he was just standing there, but then her eyes fell past him.
On the alpha twins.
Lynn confusingly skipped up to Isaac's side, where at first he was surprised to even see her in the first place, but then switched his attention back to the twins.
And as to why the two were now punching each other — Aiden landed a solid punch on Ethan's jaw, where then Ethan turned to his brother with a smirk and collided his fist into the boys nose. Within another moment, both of the boys had bloodied noses and busted lips, and just as Lynn peeled open her mouth to ask what the hell they were doing.
She got her answer.
The door of Harris' classroom swung open quickly, probably due to the noise of the fight, and all the students started to flood out.
"What is this? What's going on?"
Lynn glanced with confusion from the teacher and then the students, and her blue eyes went wide and her jaw nearly hit the floor as she suddenly saw the way Aiden was on the ground nearby her feet.
Where it looked like she had just beat the living hell out of him.
———
"So kind of you to join us, Miss Kennedy, late, of course."
Lynn flashed Harris a tight lipped smile as she entered the classroom, only to roll her blue eyes dramatically just as soon as she was out of the man's point of view. She glanced around, at first no recognizing anyone until her eyes landed on Isaac and Allison sitting next to each other, quite awkwardly.
Figuring to take the table behind them, she curiously narrowed her eyes as she spotted a girl she had never met before. She was quite pretty, innocent looking with soft doe-shaped eyes and long, blonde strands of hair.
Lynn dropped her school backpack on top of the table, gaining the girl's attention from playing around with her own fingertips. Lynn perked up an eyebrow towards the available seat next to her, and the girl switched between her and the empty stool.
"Oh, uh, go ahead," the girl responded, scooting her own chair over a foot or so.
Reluctantly, Lynn took the seat before Harris had the chance to give her yet another reason to get a detention. Harris directed a few of the other kids of what their tasks would be, but Lynn was sure that whatever he gave her, it would be better than having to reshelf a shit ton of books in the library.
"Are you going to say something or just stare at me?"
Lynn smirked as she swung her head over her shoulders towards the blonde girl, who looked slightly embarrassed that she had even managed to check her staring in the first place. Her cheeks flashed the softest bit red, and Lynn let out a little chuckle.
"Aren't you the girl who beat the hell out of Aiden earlier?" The blonde questioned, and Lynn wanted to annoyingly roll her eyes, but sucked it up.
"And?"
"I was just going to say thank you," the girl answered, but there was a slight aggressive tone in her voice, like she was snapping. "The idiot copied off my homework and somehow I'm the one caught cheating."
Lynn perked her eyebrows up while letting out an amused scoff, "You seem too nice to want to hurt someone."
"Oh, yeah?" The girl rose her own eyebrows in Lynn's direction. "Wait, wait, let me guess. You're an aries, aren't you?"
Lynn suspiciously narrowed her eyes in her direction, wondering just how she seemed to know her zodiac sign, a little offended expression covering her face. Where the girl let out a wild chuckle while shaking her head under her breath.
"Makes sense, I could smell the judgement and anger issues from across the room," the girl snarkily replied, and Lynn let an impressed expression cover her face as she the sweet, gentle girl seemingly had some venom in those perfectly shaped nails.
"Oh, alright, Miss Cancer has a sense of humor, hm?" Lynn grinned proudly, and it was now the blondes turn to shift with shock. "I could just see the tears forming in your eyes, sweetheart."
It was silent for a second as the two girls just seemingly stared at each other, and then within a second, the room was filled with snorts of laughter from the both of them.
"You're pretty funny," the girl chuckled while licking her dry bottom lip. "How come we've never met?"
"I have no idea, but you're my new best friend," Lynn replied with a smile, leaning her elbow against the table while resting her chin on top of it. "Evelynn Kennedy, but I just go by Lynn."
"Finley Harris, but—"
"—Harris, as in.?" Lynn softly cringed up her face while she pointed her index finger towards the distracted Harris in the corner of the room with two other students.
"Unfortunately, he is my uncle," the blonde, Finley, had replied, and Lynn had to force her two lips together to make sure she didn't let an inappropriate laugh leave her system.
"If you can't tell, he's not very fond of me," Lynn chortled, trying to remain calm, who could possibly have so much bad luck to have Mr. Harris as their uncle? Poor Finley.
"He's not very fond of anyone," Finley retorted with a simple roll of her eyes, a little smug smirk covering her lips. "And I'm his niece."
"I have a feeling we're going to be great friends, Fin."
