chapter ten
"detention"

"SHIT, I'M SORRY! I—WAIT, WHERE the hell is Harris?"

Lynn had dramatically burst her way through the doors, a bit breathless as she clutched her back-pack strap to make sure it didn't fall to the ground. She was at first completely worried because she was so late for detention — because, to be honest, Lynn had gotten all ready to go home and the second she started the engine on her car, it was like a lightbulb clicked on in her head that she had utterly forgot she had detention.

Thanks to Scott earlier in the day, although Lynn didn't blame the boy for beating Jackson up for the way he treated Allison — she just wished he went about it a different way instead of destroying the entirety of the boys lockerroom. So, anyone who was even remotely close to the accident unfolding had gotten detention.

"He went after Jackson," Stiles explained, and curiously furrowed his eyebrows, and then they shot upwards like an idea just erupted in his mind. "Hurry up and sit down and we'll pretend—!"

The second Stiles ordered Lynn to take a seat, she raced forward towards the table where Stiles, Scott, and Erica were all sharing together. She threw her bag on the floor beside her foot, and merely the exact second her butt collided with the wood, the library doors swung open to reveal both Jackson and Harris.

Lynn darted her arm across the table to grab a book, flipping open to a random page while trying to look as if she had buried her nose in it this entire time.

"Alright, Jackson, you may go — Miss Kennedy, when did you get here?"

"Hm?" Lynn hummed while raising her head up from the book, and she rose her eyebrows up towards the man. "Uh, sir, what do you mean.? I've been here."

"No, you haven't," Mr. Harris responded, placing his hands on his hips dramatically while he narrowed his eyes carefully.

"Uh, Mr. Harris, she's been here the entire time," Stiles spoke up, and Lynn's eyes flickered over towards the boy with complete gratitude.

     "Right," Scott chimed in.

Mr. Harris almost searched the rest of the room to see everyone else's expressions — all of them practically nodding in agreed. Lynn was worried for a second that Jackson was going to completely decline it, but he seemed to be buried in his own thoughts.

"Weird..." Mr. Harris shook off, then turning towards the desk where it looked like he had been grading some papers.

"Thanks," Lynn breathed out once she knew Mr. Harris could no longer hear her, and she flashed Stiles and Scott a relieved smile, and then her eyes landed on Erica. The girl hadn't said anything to stop Mr. Harris from thinking Lynn was here the entire time, so Lynn gave her a tight-lipped smile, but nonetheless, still a smile.

      "Whoa, look the dates."

Lynn curiously shut the book she was fake reading, and furrowed her eyebrows at the pink cased laptop that Erica was currently typing on. And apparently, Scott was able to sense Lynn's confusion, so he spoke up.

He cautiously glanced over his shoulder at Jackson, probably to make sure he couldn't overhear. "How Jackson's parents died."

"Oh," Lynn murmured, and then her eyes flickered towards Jackson — who overall, didn't seem to be doing well. His heartbeat was so rapid it seemed like he was about to have a heart attack, not to mentioned he was quite literally drenched in sweat. "What's it say?"

"'Passengers arrived at the hospital DOA. The estimated time of death — 9:26 P.M., June 14, 1995'," Erica read aloud slowly, and then Stiles let out a rather loud sigh.

      "Jackson's birthday is June 15th."

Before the teenagers could say anything else, they were interrupted when they heard Mr. Harris sliding the papers he was just grading into his briefcase bag, and zipping it all together.

Well, this was the quickest detention I've ever had...

The rest of the students in the detention then started gathering their own items — like computers and book-bags, but then a laugh rumbled from deep inside Mr. Harris' chest.

"Oh, no, I'm sorry. Uh, yes, I'm leaving. But none of you are," Mr. Harris explained, and it looked like he was stifling his laughter. "You may go when you're done with the reshelving. Enjoy the rest of your evening."

Lynn flashed a deadpan glare at Mr. Harris the entire time he walked from the desk he was using over to the exit doors, and she growled under her breath when she saw his shadow finally disappear behind the doors.

The teenagers quickly started grabbing handfuls of books from the few carts that were near the front of the library. Lynn huffed out annoyingly, hooking her fingers around a brown covered book and stuffing it into the second highest shelf.

Herself and Erica were in between the same row bookshelves — since it was decided they would get through all the books much faster if they were to split up. So, Matt and Jackson had separated into the first row, Lynn and Erica got the second, and then Stiles, Scott, and Allison got the last one.

Erica had yet to say a single word to Lynn, mostly just minding her business while she casually stuffed away books. But it was like the silence was eating away at Lynn, like some flesh-eating parasite.

"If you're gonna say something, just say it already."

"What?" Lynn asked, swinging on her heels from once facing the many books over to Erica, who had turned around as well. She had a somewhat annoyed expression, and had a single hand on her hip with attitude all over her body.

"Your heartbeat, you're nervous, I can tell," Erica responded, and Lynn had to give her props for finally learning some of her abilities, or perhaps Derek had finally started training.

"I'm not nervous," Lynn countered quickly, and she didn't have the energy to fight it, so she just took more books from the heavy cart and distracted herself with separating them correctly.

More time passed with this awkward tension filling the room between the two she-wolves. Lynn was mentally scolding herself for even feeling guilty in the first place — and what, per say, was she guilty about?

She felt as if she was about to kill Isaac that night when Lydia's life was being threatened. Truly, Lynn thought if Scott wasn't there to quite literally pull her off of Isaac's unconscious body, she wouldn't have stopped herself.

      "How is Isaac?"

"That's what you're all nervous about?" Erica deadpanned, and Lynn glanced over her shoulder with an unamused glare.

"God, nevermind I even asked," Lynn snapped instantly, letting out an annoyed huff of air.

"He's fine," Erica said after a second of silence, and although Lynn didn't want to admit it, there was a small wave of relief. "If you have some little girl crush on him, why don't you just go ahead and tell him."

"I do not have a crush on Isaac," Lynn shook her head repeatedly, and even though she was absolutely sure she had no feelings for the boys, a slight blush was able to crawl onto her cheeks. She had no idea how though. "It's just — I feel bad for losing control the other day."

Before either of the two girls had a chance to add anything else to the conversation, a loud erupting sound echoed throughout the library. And the second Lynn searched around to determine whatever the hell it was, she was interrupted as her entire body was flung against the wooden bookshelf.

Lynn was completely winded and a loud whimper escaped her lips without meaning too. Her eyelids fluttered several times as there was a serious chance he could've been knocked unconscious, but she shook her head and shakily rose her body up from the ground. Although she was on all fours, she quickly stumbled forward to see Erica's body also on the ground.

"Erica? Erica!?" Lynn called out, slowly stumbling forward until she could wrap her fingers around the girls shoulder, shaking her body in an attempt at waking her up. And then suddenly, her eyes opened wide and she let out a little gasp, but she wasn't moving the rest of her body. She could only that Erica managed to get cut and now had venom tracing in her blood. "Guys!"

Lynn pulled the girl up from the ground to carefully place her head on her lap, but the mere second she started sling so, Erica's body started violently shaking. Stiles was the first one to run up to the bookshelves, and he breathed out rather rapidly.

     "I think she's having a seizure!"

Lynn's eyes fluttered over to where everyone was just standing, but now they had rushed over to Erica's side. And she nervously swallowed some spit when she saw the words STAY OUT OF MY WAY OR I'LL KILL YOU ALL written messily on a chalkboard off to the side of the room, and she could only assume it was Jackson.

"We need to get her to a hospital," Stiles exclaimed quickly, warmly placing an arm under Erica's neck for support.

"Derek," muttered Erica in between deep breathes, and Lynn gently brushed a strand of her curled blonde hair out of her face. "Only to Derek."

"When we get her to the hospital—" Scott tried explaining to the rest of the teens, but was only interrupted again by Erica.

      "To Derek...to Derek."
