BREE WOKE UP THE NEXT MORNING WHEN SHE FELT SOMEONE NUDGE HER SHOULDER. She stirred and slowly opened her eyes to see JJ kneeling over her with wide eyes. She furrowed her eyebrows as she heard him say. "B, there's a plane. Get up."
"What?" she asked with a confused expression, and this time, he just pointed up. She followed his finger and saw a small object flying above them. She was so shocked and excited that she practically sprung up and grabbed his arm. Pope and Cleo took off to light the bonfire, and Kie was helping John B and Sarah yell at the plane on the beach.
"Hey! Hey, we're over here! Over here! Hey! We're right here!" they shrieked, and the brunette girl raced down to join them with the blonde boy at her heels. "Over here! Hey! We're over here! Hey!"
They all watched in disappointment as the plane continued to fly its path without slowing down or stopping to help them. Just as they were about to give up, the vehicle turned around. Kie shouted, "He see us. Guys, guys, he sees us."
"He's gonna go to the pond. Come on, come on," the Routledge boy informed them, and they grabbed Pope and Cleo before sprinting across the island to the pond as they watched the plane land. Once they got there, the vehicle was on the ground, and they all breathed out a sigh of relief.
A man stepped out of the plane as they cheered for him. He had long hair pulled back in a ponytail and sunglasses. He looked like your average fishing plane pilot. He smiled at them as he leaned on the side of the plane. "Well, what do we got here?"
"You know, just some castaways," John B joked, gesturing around to the seven of them.
"Well, I'll cross that off the grocery list," the man said before going to step back into the plane. They all looked worried for a second that he was just going to leave them there until he spoke. "Uh, hang on. I got just the thing for y'all. Just one second." He grabbed some things and held it up for them to see before tossing it to them. "Two things you need on a deserted island. First aid and rum! Incoming!" Bree caught the alcohol while Pope grabbed the first aid kit. Why would he give them that if he was going to fly them out of there? "Hey, here you go. So what's the story? You guys sank a boat?"
The brunette boy shook his head as the others examined the products. He pointed to his wife. "Jumped off one. Her dad's."
"In-laws, man. They're tough. Well, have no fear. Jimmy's here. I got you," he informed them with a grin, causing all of them to smile except for JJ who was just kind of brooding in the background. Bree had an idea about what he was upset about, and as soon as their eyes met, he knew she understood.
Cleo just smiled and started walking toward the vehicle, ready to leave and get the hell out of there. "Well, all hail Jimmy, guys! Let's go."
"Welcome aboard the Flying Fish. I'm Jimmy Portis. I'll be your captain today," he greeted before glancing around at each of them. "Is this all? Seven of you?"
"Uh, yeah. That too heavy?" John B questioned since the plane did not look the most stable and reliable one on the planet. The last thing they needed was to crash and end up dead in the middle of the ocean somewhere.
He shook his head with a chuckle. "Nah. Uh, technically maybe, but I think old Fish here'll probably be okay. We could always throw somebody overboard, right?"
"Hey, you're coming with us, right?" the Callaway girl asked JJ as they rest of their friends got ready to board the plane. He had not moved yet, and she knew why.
"Yeah, of course. Why wouldn't I?" the Maybank boy questioned, and when she shot him a knowing look, he just sighed and continued, "I just don't get why we would leave paradise to go back to the hell of the Outer Banks. There's nothing there for us."
She shot him a pitying look. "There's nothing there for you or me or Sarah or Cleo, but Kie and Pope have families. John B has a house. They have things that they want to get back to."
"Yeah, I know. Let's go," he finished, and he threw his arm around her as she led him to the plane where everybody was getting on.
"Yeah, just tuck on in," Jimmy told them as they all squeezed into the seats on the plane and he made his way to the pilot's chair. "Let's, uh, get this shit going."
Kiara furrowed her eyebrows when she saw someone sitting in the seat next to the pilot's. Brown hair showed above the top of the headrest. She looked at the man and quizzed, "Who's that?"
"This here is Mateo. He's my apprentice," Jimmy introduced, and the person turned around so that they could see his face. It was a boy around their age wearing jeans and a t-shirt. He offered a small smile before turning back around and facing the front.
"Talkative," Bree muttered, causing them all to smile a little bit, before raising her eyebrows at the pilot as they took off. "So what were you doing all the way out here?"
He shrugged while starting to click a bunch of buttons and flip switches. Mateo did the same thing. "I got a little guide outfit in Saint Vincent. I was spotting fish."
"What were you spotting?" the blonde boy asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"You know, the usual. Wahoo," Jimmy answered as they started to move forward a little bit. John B and JJ looked at each other with suspicious looks. The brunette boy in the front reached up and grabbed a handle above him as the vehicle started to shake slightly. "I'd hang on to something. Gets a little spicy on takeoff."
After they had been flying for a good couple of minutes, the Maybank boy shot them all a look. They scooched in closer so that they could talk quietly so that they were not heard by either of the males in the front. "Wahoo don't run in September. Ever. All right? So whoever this man is, he's not a fisherman."
"Maybe the run just starts earlier out here," Pope offered, trying to come up for a reason to trust the guy that supposedly saved them.
The blonde boy just shook his head and scoffed. "Are you sure about that? In the Caribbean?"
"No, I know what this is," Sarah informed them, and it was the same thing that she had been paranoid about the whole time that they were on that island. "He's working for my dad, and he's probably been looking for us the entire time."
They all looked at each other before JJ began scanning the plane for anything weird or out of the ordinary. Jimmy seemed like an odd guy, so pretty much everything was out of the ordinary. "All right, we gotta find out. Start looking for some sort of clues."
"Hey, Jimmy," John B greeted, and he started up a conversation with the pilot, successfully distracting him while his friends searched in the back. They grabbed the bag on the back of Jimmy's seat and pulled out a bunch of books and papers. Bree grabbed a book, but before she could look at it, she noticed something in the corner of her eye.
She looked over to see none other than Mateo staring straight at her. She thought for sure that they had been caught, but instead of saying anything, he just glanced down at the book in her hand and nodded at her. She furrowed her eyebrows but continued nonetheless. The book was about El Dorado, the Lost City of Gold. She opened it to the first page and a picture fell out. "Oh, my God."
"What?" Sarah asked, and the brunette just wordlessly handed the picture over to her. The blonde's eyes widened as she examined it. "The Coastal Venture. Oh my God. This is the boat we were on. With Eberhimi and the cross. He's working for my dad."
"Hey, y'all better hold something. We got some unexpected turbulence up here," Jimmy told them, and the whole plan shook, knocking the Callaway girl into Kie.
The Carrera pointed out the window to where they were approaching land. "Guys, whatever it is, it's happening fast. Look."
"That looks like Barbados. I've been there with Terrance," Cleo informed them as she leaned over Pope and toward the window examined the pace that they were headed toward.
"Okay, there's six of us, two of them," the Maybank boy pointed out, and they all knew where he was headed with that. Kiara rolled her eye because she knew it would be a bad idea. "You know my vote. We storm the cockpit."
John B shot him a look. "No, who's gonna fly the plane, dumbass?"
"I've seen Pope fly simulators," the blonde boy pointed out, and they all turned to the Heyward to hear his response to that.
"I crop-dusted for my uncle last summer. This is not the same thing," he told JJ angrily. That was definitely different from landing that rickety piece of crap Jimmy called a plane. "We don't have time to pretend that's a real option. Why don't we just wait until the plane lands somewhere safe, and then we sneak out. And if somebody comes to mess with us, we mad-dog them."
They all nodded, agreeing with his statement. JJ was the only one who had not answered, but he nodded as well. " I like the mad-dogging part."
"Just put that back. Put it back. Be cool," Kiara told him, handing him all of the stuff that they took out of the bag for him to put back. John B continued to distract Jimmy by pointing at pictures on his dashboard and asking him about them.
All of a sudden, though, the pilot turned around, and his happy and chill expression changed to one of terror and anger. "Hey, man! What the hell are you doing? That's mine!" He dove into the back and tried to get his bag back. "It's my book. Give it back."
"Please fly the plane. Please fly the plane," Pope begged since they were headed straight for the island. Something was beeping rapidly, and Mateo was trying to lean over and take control of the vehicle.
Jimmy finally realized that they were going to crash if he did not do something, so he flipped back around and started pulling on the controls. "Come on. Come on, Fish. Come on, Fish. Come on, Fish. Come on, Fish. Come on. Come on, Fish."
They were all screaming, and Bree cried out in pain as her head slammed against the top of the plane. Suddenly, they made contact with the water, and they all went flying toward the front of the plane. They coughed as the plane filled up with water. Pope called to them, "Guys. Is everybody good? JJ! Wake up, man. We gotta get out. We gotta get out of here.
"We gotta get out before it sinks," the blonde told them as John B opened the hatch of the hatch of the plane.
He looked over to the beach where a group of men in vests and angry expressions were standing, and it looked like they were waiting for them. "Oh no. They don't look friendly."
"No, they look very unfriendly," the Heyward boy confirmed as they all started piling out and swimming toward the shore. "Kie, get out before it sinks!"
"Hang on!" she yelled, and she moved further into the plane. Bree furrowed her eyebrows until she realized that Jimmy and Mateo were still in the front seats, most likely unconscious.
The Calaway girl shook her head even though her friend could not see her, They did not have time for that. "No, no, no, Kie! Come on! Hurry!"
"Come over here. Get to the pier," JJ told them, and he grabbed the brunette's arm and dragged her over to the pier so that they could hide underneath it.
"No, Kie!" she yelled, and she watched for signs that the girl got out of the plane. They got to the rocks below the pier, and when she turned around, she spotted the head that belonged to her best friend and breathed out a sigh of relief. "She went the other way."
Kie dragged Jimmy toward the beach, and Mateo was swimming right behind her. Once they got there safely, the men from earlier started sprinting toward them. The boy grabbed her arm, leaving his pilot on the beach as he pulled her behind some canoes. They thought that maybe she had gotten away, but that was until the men led her kicking and screaming into a truck. Mateo was being pulled along right behind her.
"Damn it!" Bree yelled, and JJ slapped his hand over her mouth. She furrowed her eyebrows until he pointed to a spot just above them on the pier where some of the men were leaning over and looking around for them.
Cleo said that they needed to move, and the others followed her as she swam. Bree did not move as she watched the truck drive away. Noticing the conflicted look on her face, the Maybank grabbed her arm comfortingly and assured her, "We're gonna get her back. I promise."
