KIE WAS PRACTICING WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO SAY TO HER PARENTS. The Chateau had burned down, and his father was all that JOhn B had left. While they were waiting on the plane, she and Pope decided that it would be best to inform their families of what was happening, and Bree went with the Carrera girl for backup in case she needed it. However, so far, the explanations were not going too well.
"I mean, I'm practically an adult. I'll never ask for anything again. No, I cannot promise that. I'm gonna write an essay about my experiences with the Indigenous tribes in South America, and then I will use that to apply for college. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That dog's gonna hunt."
"Hey, Kiara. And you must be Gabrielle," a man greeted them, climbing out of his van that he parked across the street. The two girls looked at each other in confusion, quickly realizing that neither of them knew the man. They spun around and began walking up the stairs cautiously. He called after them, "Hey, come back. I'm not gonna hurt you. I just want to talk to you."
"Uh, no, thanks," Kie yelled back. "Stranger danger. Hey! Dad. Uh, Mom," she yelled banging on the door when it did not open. Their house was almost never locked, so that was very concerning. Bree kept her eye on the man approaching them, and another guy appeared behind him.
The door swung open, but another unfamiliar man was standing on the other side. He looked down at them, and it was clear that he was in on whatever was happening. "Look. This can go one of two ways."
"Kie, what's going on?" Bree asked because her friend was staring at the man's shirt that said 'Kitty Hawk', and the girl seemed to know what it meant. She was muttering 'no, no, no' over and over again under her breath.
Anna stepped out behind the man, and Bree finally realized what was happening. She had remembered Kiara saying something about corrective programs, and that must be what was going on. Shit. Mrs. Carrera looked at her daughter, "I'm sorry, honey. We're sending you away for a while. They say that Kitty Hawk's the best."
"Wait, what?" Kiara questioned, and she was panicking. Bree tried to step back, but she bumped into a man's chest. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her in place so that she couldn't run away. She was absolutely terrified by the thought.
"We just need to try this, okay? We're just trying to help you. It'll be good for you too, Gabrielle. We paid for you to go. It's what your mom would have wanted," Anna explained, and the Calloway girl could not believe that she was serious. She was not even her child. Could she even do that? "It's not forever, sweetie. I love you."
And the men began dragging the girls back down the porch. Bree kicked at the man holding her, but he was too strong. He could do anything, and she would not be able to stop him. Kie shook her head. "Mom. Mom. I can't do this right now."
"We're trying to help you. You have to try," Mike told her, joining her mother by the door.
They walked out as the two girls reached the yard, and Bree was squirming so much that the man just picked her up and threw her over his shoulder while she failed. The Carrera girl yelled, "You can't send us to wilderness cuckoo's nest! Bree's not even your child!"
"They're not gonna hurt you. They're good. They'll help you out," Anna assured her daughter, but there was no way that Kiara was going to agree with her after what was happening. She was paying people to kidnap her daughter and her friend. "Don't fight it. Just go, baby. It's best for you right now."
"I said I don't wanna go. I don't want to!" But it didn't matter. Kie was in tears when they were thrown in the back of the van. She banged on the window as they drove away, but after a while she gave up, lying down on the seat and placing her head in Bree's lap so that she could comfort her while she cried.
Bree was busy trying to make a plan or come up with some way that they could escape in time to get back to the plane. They arrived at Kitty Hawk and were told to put on shirts with the logo on it. They had to meet with the leader of the camp for a 'diagnosis,' and she allowed them to sit through each other's meetings. Kie went first. "Well, thank you for sharing, Kiara, and thank you both for putting on our uniform."
"Like we had a choice," Kie answered, and the woman sighed.
"Well, now the good news is, we have a name for your condition. ODD. Oppositional defiant disorder," the woman informed her, and Bree rolled her eyes. Kie just didn't want to be sent away against her will. "It's consistent opposition to authority."
Bree shook her head and murmured, "That's not a thing."
"Yeah, did you just make that up? Sounds like bullshit," Kie agreed. Sure, she had ditched some important things in the past to be with the Pogues, but that was just because they needed her. Bree and Sarah did the same thing.
"As I was saying, consistent opposition," the leader commented, and it took everything in Bree not to climb over her desk and rip her hair out. "Now, fortunately, it's very treatable with medication."
Kie shook her head immediately. "I'm not taking medication."
"See that? That right there? Your reaction. You just confirmed my diagnosis. Now, we can help with this," the woman assured her, but that was anything but assuring. Kie then dismissed herself to go to the bathroom, shooting Bree a look that told her that she was planning something.
After a moment, the woman at the desk stood up to head into the bathroom because she knew what was happening. Bree used this distraction to get up and sneak out the door. One of them just needed to get out and tell the others where the other was, but as soon as she stepped out, she ran into one of the men that had brought them there.
"Shit," she muttered, and another man brought Kiara out as well. They were led to a cabin on the outside of the camp, and they were put in separate rooms so that they could not speak to one another.
"At Kitty Hawk, patients will not be allowed to contact the outside world for the first six weeks of their stay. Patients will not be able to use their phones. Patients will work to be diligent and polite. Patients will be expected to get to work on time. Be awake by six a.m. and asleep by nine p.m. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in time in the reflection cabin. This is all in the patient's best interest."
There was a window between their two rooms, so all Bree could do was place her hand on the glass and let Kie know that she was not alone. The Carrera girl mimicked the action, and they sat there like that. They needed to get the hell out of there, but they had huge men everywhere. There was almost no way to escape.
They were trapped.

IT FELT LIKE THEY HAD BEEN IN THERE FOR DAYS. It had been about an hour or two, and they had to speak really loud to talk to each other, which sometimes resulted in a counselor coming over and telling them that 'the reflection cabin can't do its magic if we distract it with our words.' Finally, a woman came up to Kie's door.
"Kiara? Sweetie? Can you come out here?" she called, unlocking the door. Both girls jumped up, and Bree moved to press her ear to the door so that she could hear everything that happened. Once Kie was outside, the woman faced her with a grim expression. "I'm sorry, sweetie, but at Kitty Hawk, we feel you have the strength to hear all the news, including bad news."
"What happened?" the Carrera girl questioned, slightly concerned. Bad news in that place could mean anything from a death in the family to not getting enough time in the reflection cabin.
The woman seemed really nervous to tell her, and Bree was scared that something had happened to their friends. "Well, your cousins were here a minute ago. Two young men, blond and brunette. They asked me to tell you that Marley, well, he passed away." This confused both girls because neither of them knew a Marley, and Kie had no cousins that would visit her.
"Like Bob Marley?" Kiara quizzed.
"No. Your Siamese mix, Marley," she explained, and both of the girls froze, realizing what was happening. Two boys, matching the descriptions of JJ and Leo, came and told the lady something fake so that they knew that they were there. "We got the news just after you arrived. We thought you should know."
Kie understood the assignment and began weeping, and the woman's eyes filled with pity as she began comforting her. After a moment, the girl asked, "Do you mind if I sit with my friend for a little bit? I can't be alone right now."
"Of course, sweetie." The woman allowed it, and Kie stepped into Bree's room. As soon as the door closed behind her, they grinned at each other. They were being rescued.
They did not hear from anyone else until another hour later when a woman unlocked their room and stepped inside, informing them. "We know you're grieving and feel you're best supported by your peers. Not just Miss Gabrielle. So we're going to relocate you. We're putting you both in a dorm. Cabin six. Let's go."
"Hey, uh, just hang on one sec," Kie told her, and Bree stepped out of the room to distract the woman while Kie left a sign for the boys to let them know where they were headed.
They were led to their cabin, and as soon as they stepped inside, all conversation halted and all heads turned to them. "Girls, this is Gabrielle and Kiara. Kiara's had some tough family news. Let's show her some empathy and love, okay? Can we do that?"
"Why is everyone here really pretty?" Bree muttered to her friend.
They looked out among the sea of beautiful girls glaring at them, and the Carrera girl added, "And really judgemental, it looks like." They just sighed and headed over to the empty bunk bed. Bree took top, and Kie took bottom, and everyone went back to their previous conversations.
"We only have to be here for a little bit longer. JJ and Leo are coming," the Calloway girl reminded her friend, and Kiara nodded, feeling more at ease when she remembered that.
That night, Bree was lying awake in her bed, unable to sleep because she had not been around so many people that she didn't know in a while. She wanted to be back with the Pogues, on their way to South America, but she was trapped. All of a sudden, a light turned on on the other side of the room, causing her to furrow her eyebrows. "Hello, everyone. Shit. I know this looks bad. We come in peace. We're just looking for someone. I'm looking... looking for..."
"JJ?" Bree called when she heard the voice, and she sat up in her bed. Kie was beginning to stir as well, and her eyes widened in shock when she saw what was happening. The two boys were standing in the middle of the room, failing at sneaking around.
His eyes landed on her, and he froze, his eyes softening as he breathed out, "B."
She had never gotten out of bed faster. She jumped down from the top bunk and immediately ran over to him, jumping when she reached him as he picked her up and hugged her, spinning her around. She held him tight like he was about to fall apart in her arms. Behind them, Leo and Kie greeted each other cutely but awkwardly with a hug.
Bree pulled apart ever so slightly as JJ placed her back onto her feet, but a second later, his hand was on her waist. He pulled her in so that his lips captured hers, and her heart melted. She had not kissed him in months, and she had forgotten how exhilarating it was. She immediately kissed back, and she never wanted to pull away. Her hands slid up to his neck, and his pulled her in closer. The room erupted in cheers from the girls around them, and both of them smiled into the kiss.
They finally pulled away, and he laughed while turning to the girls, putting a finger to his lips. "Shh! Keep it down! Keep it down!" And then, they were out of there.ย
