"THIS IS THE NORTH DRAIN," JJ INFORMED THEM THE NEXT DAY. He brought them to some really gross and muddy drain that was full of trash. " It should've gotten washed into the gully. So, if it got flushed out from this drain, it would've been pushed out to, likeโ"
"Somewhere in this trash," Pope finished for him as they stared at all of the plastic bags and bottles that were in the water below them. Bree pictured all of the turtles and birds that could get caught in them, and she had to force herself to stop so that she could focus on the task at hand.
Kie sighed, and she looked like she was in physical pain from the sight. "Oh, my God. People who use plastic should be shot."
"Okay, personally, I love plastic," JJ told them, and they knew that he was just trying to make Kiara mad. "Use it every day. Love the stuff."
"Hopefully, you recycle it and don't let it flush into the ocean," the Carrera girl said.
Pope smiled a little bit before holding something up for the girls to see. "I thought you'd say something like that, so...trash bags."
"Did you just proactively protect the environment?" the raven-haired girl questioned with a small smile, and the other two teenagers looked to each other because they could both sense the chemistry that was going on between their friends.
The blonde boy raised his eyebrows at them, gesturing between the two with a somewhat awkward expression, and Bree knew that he was about to make everything weird.. "You want me to leave you two alone, or what's going on?"
"Can you ever just shut up?" the Callaway girl muttered to him after not-so-subtly elbowing him in the side. He groaned slightly and prepared to answer when she cut him off. "Just pick up the trash."
They spent the next half an hour searching through all of the trash around them and then packing it into trash bags. Bree was not going to lie. Being in the slimy water was not her favorite thing in the world despite the fact that they were saving the planet. Pope sighed when they did not find anything. "If it's not in the trash, then it's gotta be in the storm drain."
"It's in...It's in the drain," the blonde boy confirmed, causing them all to groan because they knew that someone was going to have to climb in there and find it. The first thing they had to do was open up the grate. "Good thing I brought the crow."
"So, are we gonna do, like, rock, paper, scissors? Or alphabetically? Or, like, the oldest goes?" Kie asked as they boy worked on opening up the sewers.
Once they were successful in doing that, JJ was the first to answer her. "In the sewer, there's this worm that you get when you're down there. It gets into your blood, and then it has to come out your pecker. So, uh...that would be a hard pass for me."
"That's gonna be a no for me," Pope agreed.
"I don't know about you, Kie," the Callaway girl spoke up with a small smirk as she stepped toward the boys. "But I think that they don't wanna go because they're scared."
The Carrera girl nodded in agreement, giggling slightly as the boys tried to deny the fact that they all knew was true. "I think so too. It's kind of cute. You should've just led with that. You don't have to be scared. I'll do it."
"Okay, just, you know, be careful," Pope told her, opening the grate for her so that she could step inside.
She looked back up at him before she crouched down, and they all remembered the times that they would make fun of John B for saying that exact same thing to Sarah. "I'll be so careful."
"I deserve that," he muttered, and then she got down on her hands and knees and began crawling through the disgusting, murky water to look for the gun that would prove their friend's innocence.
"Just, uh, holler if you need anything, okay?" the blonde boy called to her, but Bree furrowed her eyebrows as she wondered what he would do if their friend needed anything. "We'll, uh... we'll holler back."
Kie's voice echoed through the tunnel as she responded, "Very helpful. Thank you."
"Yell if you need me to come save you because I think it's pretty obvious that these dumbasses won't do anything," the brunette girl shouted through the drain, crouching down to make sure that her female friend heard her.
"Thanks, Bree," the Carrera girl said gratefully. "Good to know that someone has my back."
After waiting a couple minutes for the girl to get far enough down the drain that she could actually start looking for the weapon. JJ yelled down the pipe, "Kie do you see the gun?"
"Nope," she answered.
Pope thought for a second before informing her, "It's probably at the bottom of the catch basin." Then, the two boys turned to each other and lowered their voices.
"All right, bro, I see you vibing on Kie, okay?" the Maybank boy told him with a suggestive smirk plastered on his face. He raised his eyebrows at the Heyward boy. "Give me the details. Are we talking first base, second base, third base?"
"Okay, I think that is my cue to leave," Bree muttered because she was not sure if she wanted to hear the rest of that conversation. Kie might want her to spy on them, but she really did not feel like it.
JJ grabbed her arm to stop her from walking away. "Wait, wait, wait. Kie's probably told you all the gossip, so you mind sharing a little bit with us?"
"Why would I do that?" she questioned.
He shrugged, gesturing to the boy next to him. "It would really help out Pope here so he can get a vibe of how Kie is feeling. So, why don't you help a bro out?"
"Hoes before bros," was all she answered, throwing her hands up to show him that she could not tell him anything. "I cannot give any confidential information without the permission of Miss Carrera."
"Okay, you know what? You are no help. You can go now," he told her with a playfully bitter voice, and she gladly walked away, telling them to call her over if anything happened. She walked down the dock beside them and just stared out at the water for a moment.
She was thinking. She had not really though about anything for a while. Most of the time, she just blocked all of her problems from her mind and focused on the future and the stuff that mattered like getting John B and Sarah back. She had barely even processed the fact that she was basically homeless and owned nothing but a duffel bag of crap and a motorcycle.
Her thoughts were interrupted by yelling, so she sprinted back down the dock and hopped into the water beside them. "What's going on?"
"You guys, there's something dead in here! Oh my God! There's something dead. I repeat, there is something dead in here!" the Carrera girl screamed, answering her question before the boys could.
She shouted back along with the other boys, "Like an animal?"
"Kie, don't touch it. That's how you get worms," the Maybank boy told her, causing the other two teenagers to just glare at him because he was not being very helpful.
"Did you find the gun?" Pope quizzed with a worried voice because the raven-haired girl sounded really freaked out, and they could hear her breathing heavily because it was so loud. "Is it Gavin?"
The Carrera girl told them, "You guys owe me for life?"
"What if Ward put Gavin in the sewer, dude? That makes so much sense," the blonde boy exclaimed, his eyes widening in realization as he ran a hand through his hair.
"Hold on. Do you hear that?" Pope asked them, and when they looked at him in confusion, he shushed JJ and held a finger out to stop them from making noise. "Listen."
It was the sound of running water.
Once Bree heard it, she mumbled. "Shit." If the water was running, that meant that the drain was going to flood, and Kiara was going to drown if she stayed in there.
"Kiara, get out of there now!" the Heyward boy ordered, and they heard Kie yelling indistinctly. Even though they could not make it out, the tone gave them all the information they needed. She did not have enough time to get out. The water levels were already too high.
Without even thinking, Bree pushed past the boys and the grate and began climbing through the whole. They grabbed at her ankles, trying to pull her back because there was no way that she could make it to Kie and get her in time. The water did their work for them because it came shooting down the hole and flushed her out. JJ grabbed her wrist, holding onto the grate so that they did not go shooting into the marsh. She coughed violently because of all of the water in her nose and mouth. "Oh, fuck. That's disgusting."
"Maybe there's a manhole," the blonde boy suggested, and he actually had a good idea for once. He pushed Pope to the side and gestured for him to climb onto the grass. "Go, go, go, go!"
Then, Pope helped pull the choking brunette girl onto the land. JJ was next, and the two boys went sprinting down the street and toward the manhole in the middle of the road. Bree looked around once she realized that there was no way that they could just pull open the sewer. She spotted what she was looking for and lunged for JJ's bag before it fell into the water. She quickly fished the crowbar out of the bag before running after the boys as fast as she could.
Water was pouring out of the manhole when she got there which meant that Kie had no air and was drowning. The boys were trying to use their fingers to pull the grate up. She shouted, "Move, move, move."
They looked up, and when they saw what was in her hands, they quickly backed up and let her do her think. She hooked the bar into one of the slots of the drain and pulled as hard as she could. After a moment, JJ put his hands on top of hers and pulled with her. Within seconds, the top was off, and they were helping the girl climb out. She coughed and gasped as she laid down on the ground, resting.
"Kiara," Pope said, wrapping his arms around her in a hug as she pushed herself to her knees. "I thought we lost you."
"Pope, get off me. Pope, get off me!" she ordered, pushing his hands away from her. She obviously did not mean it to be mean. She just really needed some space to breathe.
JJ raised his eyebrows at her as he stood up. "Kie, you good?"
"Never better," she answered sarcastically, shooting him a thumbs up. Then, she reached into her waistband and pulled something out, causing all of them to gasp in shock. "This wasn't what we were looking for, right?"
It was the gun.
"Holy shit," the Callaway girl exclaimed when she saw it, and they all began celebrating. With this, they could prove John B's innocence, and he and Sarah could come home finally.
The Carrera girl stood up with Pope and Bree, and JJ collided with all of his friends, wrapping his arms around them. They all laughed as they hugged. "You did it, Kie. You did it. Come on."
"Let's get this to Shoupe."
