08. The breakaway
Kim Taehyung carefully guided the plane into the designated parking spot on the tarmac, his hands steady on the controls. The aircraft came to a smooth halt, and as the engines wound down, he caught sight of the fuel truck approaching in the distance. It moved at a steady pace, nothing out of the ordinary—just what they needed to avoid raising any suspicion among the hijackers.
Taehyung exchanged a quick glance with his co-pilot, Jinwoo, and then with the air hostess, signaling that it was time to act. Baldy, the lead hijacker, remained in the cockpit, his expression as stern as ever. Taehyung slowly undid his seatbelt, raising an eyebrow at the air hostess to encourage her to prepare herself. It was now or never.
Sensing something was off, Baldy leaned forward to see what Taehyung was doing. Taehyung had anticipated this reaction, and as Baldy bent down, Taehyung struck. He drove his elbow hard into Baldy’s face, catching him off guard. Baldy staggered back from the unexpected blow.
Without wasting a second, Taehyung grabbed Baldy by the neck and slammed him down onto the control panel. The air hostess sprang into action, swiftly closing the cockpit door to block the other two hijackers from entering. At the same time, Jinwoo slammed his hand on the Emergency Exit button, and the exit doors burst open, the inflatable slide deploying instantly.
"Go! Go now!" Taehyung shouted, urgency in his voice as he struggled with Baldy, who was regaining his composure. Baldy shoved Taehyung back and reached for his gun.
"Go!" Taehyung repeated, his voice growing more desperate as Jinwoo slid down the slide, the air hostess right behind him.
Baldy managed to grip the gun, and a fierce struggle ensued. The two men wrestled for control, their grunts of effort filling the cockpit. Suddenly, a shot rang out, the deafening sound echoing through the cabin. Screams erupted from the passengers, and loud, frantic pounding began on the other side of the cockpit door.
"Open up!" one of the other hijackers screamed, his voice full of panic.
With adrenaline surging through his veins, Taehyung brought his knee up sharply, connecting with Baldy’s groin. The hijacker let out a pained yell, his grip on the gun loosening. Seizing the opportunity, Taehyung wrenched the gun from Baldy’s hands. Without hesitation, he struck Baldy’s head with the butt of the gun, knocking him unconscious.
Ignoring the frantic pounding and the desperate voices outside the cockpit, Taehyung turned and made his escape. He slid down the inflatable slide, hitting the ground running as fast as he could across the tarmac. His heart pounded in his chest, not from the exertion, but from the weight of what he had just done—leaving the passengers behind, knowing it was for the best. For their safety.
In the cabin, the passengers screamed in horror and confusion as they watched the co-pilot and an air hostess abandon the plan and rush across the tarmac. The pilot followed their direction just seconds later. Jimin gripped Jungkook's hand tight in his own, finally understanding what was happening.
"We'll be okay now. We'll be okay," he whispered.
Jungkook gulped hard as the hijacker yelled aloud, "they fucking escaped. They escaped!"
His heart pounded unsure of what would happen now. The pilots were gone, the cockpit empty, leaving them behind with angry and agitated hijackers.
Taehyung didn't stop running, glancing back at the plane, where the blurry faces of the passengers watched from the windows, fear and uncertainty in their eyes. The heaviness in his heart only grew as he ran.
“Lord, help them.”
