CHAPTER ONE / anthropology 101

"Anthropology..." Addy muttered under her breath, trying to find the right classroom before the clock struck eight o'clock. She'd woken up extra early for today, something she usually didn't do. But as a goal set by herself for the new semester, she made an effort to wake up early for a fresh start and place a little more effort in everything she needed to do.

However, no matter how badly she wanted things to change in her life, Addy already expected the semester to roll anything but smoothly. Accustomed to Greendale's chaos; her latest experience being the events of the Transfer Dance, she didn't expect this new one to be any less hectic than before.

She already expected the unexpected.

"Professor June Baurer," She read aloud, just to help herself remember the name. Her gaze lifted from the class itinerary in her hands, all while trying to make sure she arrived at the correct place.

She stood outside the Anthropology classroom, her figure standing right below the frame. The door was opened, and people were already inside. It was inevitable for looks to be felt on her, as the classmates inside questioned why she stood so still. While inspecting the room, Addy noticed the professor hadn't arrived yet; that explained all the bustling noise of mixed chatters that flowed through the hallway.

With a firm nod, Addy finally mustered the courage to walk in. Once again, the gazes wandered over her — letting her know that her presence had been perceived. Suddenly, it felt like she was reliving high school all over again; all the stares, the murmurs, and even the anxious feeling of the simple task of which seat to pick.

Although it was college, whoever you decided to sit next to would most probably be your classmate for the rest of the semester. Unless you find them unsettling enough to change seats by the next class.

In search of an empty seat, her gaze landed upon one of the many faces there. It was like a sudden beam of light radiated before her eyes, like an indication that the seat next to them was a gift granted by the gods above.

Addy found herself inevitably smiling. Her eyes locked with the stranger, who lifted their gaze from the desk, giving a tight-lipped smile in response before swiftly returning to their task.

Her eyes caught on to the two available seats next to them. And, before it was too late, she decided to walk toward the space before anyone else had the same thought as her.

She slowly made her way up the stairs, choosing the second desk to her right. Walking behind the chairs, she ended up choosing the one closest to the blinds. It would make it easier for her to look out the window whenever she got bored with the class. She pulled out the chair, curiously looking down at the stranger and taking note that they hadn't been so observant like the rest of her classmates; in a way that made her feel unwelcomed.

Finally sat down, Addy placed her black purse on her side of the table, making sure not to invade the stranger's space, as she didn't want to make them uncomfortable or make them feel like she didn't have a concept of what personal space was.

Carefully, she placed her elbows against the surface, lifting her left arm with an opened palm to allow her cheek to rest on it. She thought of how the seat arrangement was weird, she had never been in a classroom like this before, and it would take a long time for her to get used to sharing a table with two or three people.

It's not that she hadn't sat at a table full of other people before. But when she did, she hated every second of it. If there wasn't anyone sitting next to her, she would place her purse on the empty chair on purpose to force people to find elsewhere to sit. It always worked.

But not today. Today she was forced to share the space with someone else. All she could do was cross her fingers and hope for the best; and that her table partners were good classmates and didn't want to make her change seats.

Boringly, Addy sighed. Her lips formed into a slight pout, her gaze shifted to looking at the stranger beside her. Once again, she couldn't take her eyes off them. They had radiated such an odd sense of tranquility to her, she just had to figure out if they were really what they were projecting.

"Hi," Addy spoke up, in an attempt to engage in a conversation.

She saw how the stranger's pen stopped in its tracks when her voice followed through his ears. They gently lifted it from the notebook, then raised their head and locked eyes with her once again. She also noticed their attire, it was very simplistic.

They wore a black graphic t-shirt, with a design that she yet had to figure out what it was, a red checkered flannel on, and their raven hair properly combed in the form of a wave to the side. "I'm Addy," She added.

The stranger was looking at her in thought, making her slightly nervous, as if being scrutinized under their gaze. However, their eyebrows quickly relaxed, head tilting to the side while the end of their lips quirked to the side — they had been considering talking to her, and she didn't seem all that threatening, so they decided to give her a chance.

"Abed," He finally answered, followed by another tight-lipped smile, not in the slightest bothered by her. But, did this guy ever smile? With his teeth? "You look familiar. You've always been hanging in the background, haven't you?" He pointed his finger at her while posing the question.

Abed knew her from somewhere, but he couldn't pinpoint from where or when.

At his weird question, Addy couldn't help but furrow her eyebrows. She couldn't quite wrap her mind around what he meant.

"What does that mean?"

"Like a character." He clarified.

Addy chuckled, "I guess? I mean, I've been going here for a year," She explained.

"So, you're upgrading to the main character?" Abed carried on with the questions, now pointing the tip of his pencil at her while awaiting an answer from her.

But his doubts were only met with an uncertain shrug from Addy. She was truly trying her hardest to understand him, but his questions were odd. "Maybe this season you'll get more screen time." He added, that being his last statement.

As if Addy wasn't already confused, Abed didn't add anything else to the conversation. Maybe she made the same mistake she initially feared, and was stuck for the rest of the semester with someone that made weird questions and statements. Or his company would turn for the better, as spending that much time with him would result in understanding him better.

Amid the silence between them, more students kept coming in, distracting Addy from reflecting on her conversation with Abed.

In between the sea of students, a tall man came in, looking much older than the rest. He easily stood out from the crowd, whether he wanted it or not. However, so did Addy, who managed to catch the attention of said man.

As the guy approached the desk Abed was at, his mind began racing, who was this new girl and why was she sitting next to Abed? Usually, he's next to Abed.

On a normal day, he would've gotten mad about it and his emotions would probably end in him trying to scold who was in his seat. However, his mind was already a turmoil of thoughts, and there were more things to worry about than a simple chair.

He opted to sit in the other chair next to Abed, which was empty. Upon seeing the man act on choosing the other chair to sit on, Abed's lips parted to protest against it. He claimed that somebody else usually sat there, but the man asked him to shut up before he could get heated.

As the man settled in his new chair, Abed couldn't help but talk more.

"I made a new friend." He announced as his chest faced the man, his thumb pointed at Addy over his shoulder. The young woman's eyebrows gently raised at overheating being called "Abed's new friend", even when she didn't understand half of the things he'd said to her.

"Good for you, Abed." He responded, feigning interest along with a very uninterested smile, but it was just to get Abed off his back as he was not paying that much attention to him and didn't intend to anytime soon.

Upon being ignored by him, Abed turned to face Addy, "I want you to meet the study group. When you do, it'll guarantee you a space with the main characters." He informed Addy, watching her nod in response, though it wasn't exactly a sign that she understood what he meant.

The man furrowed his eyebrows, "Abed, what are you talking about?" He turned his head to him. Although his mind was very busy thinking about other stuff, he still found himself trying to catch up to Abed's conversation.

Hearing the confusion in his tone made Addy consider that the stranger and she already had something in common — neither of them understood Abed.

"Addy. My new friend. Look," Abed reclined in his seat, pointing at the woman next to him with his pencil. He left a gap for his friend to observe who'd he been referring to, forcing the strangers to acknowledge each other without Abed being the bearer of news in between.

The man's entire demeanor shifted in a second as if all his worries dissipated upon admiring her looks. It was the first thing he noticed, he couldn't help but notice her physical appearance.

"And you are?" He cocked a brow, his tone flirtatious while extending his arm across the desk, in hopes for their hands to meet in a friendly exchange.

He couldn't hide his evident interest in her appearance. He couldn't believe he missed noticing her wandering at Greendale. Have they met before? Of course not, not that he knew of. It's not like he would remember anyway.

"Adelaide. But I prefer Addy," She returned the same energy, an undertone of flirtiness while she kept her voice friendly, for the sake of the exchange. Their hands met in between in a soft shake that seemed to prolong the more they looked at each other. All while Abed was still reclined, feeling a little uncomfortable with their interaction.

"Jeff. Jeff Winger." The man finally revealed his name, relieving Addy from the burden of guessing. "How come we've never met before?" Jeff maintained his flirtatious demeanor.

Addy had made him forget all the troubles he had with other women. And he didn't mind meeting another.

While their hands untangled from the shake, Addy's eyebrows tied in a knot as she seemed to recognize his name. She'd heard it somewhere, and his face seemed familiar, but she couldn't quite place where she had seen him before.

An answer from Addy was interrupted by the entrance of another classmate. A blonde woman — seemingly in her late 20s, wearing an all-black outfit from head to toe. With her entrance, a group of girls gathered by the door cheered at her arrival, weirdly infatuated with her, which caused a bright smile to crack on the blonde's face.

Contrary to the majority, Jeff couldn't help but be bothered by this collective reaction, which Addy noticed quickly. "I don't get it," Jeff commented.

"Star-burns has grown reliant on his sideburns but still craves identity beyond them, so he added a hat," Abed replied to his question, thinking he was answering Jeff's confusion.

"No, what's with the Britta-mania?" Jeff clarified.

"The what?" Addy asked, visibly confused. She didn't know who this Britta girl was, or the mania about her.

"The girl you see over there," Abed began, his face turned toward Addy while the tip of his pencil was pointed at the blonde. "Her name is Britta. She used to be Jeff's - -"

Jeff shushed Abed before he could even finish, keeping Addy's curiosity at its pique.

"Abed, you do understand you can't just go around telling everyone my business, right?" Jeff snarled.

Abed nodded in understanding, following Jeff's instructions and complying with his wishes. However, Addy still harbored doubts and wasn't inclined to drop the topic until she received a satisfactory answer.

"What's up with her?" She asked, trying to keep up with the conversation where it left off. She anticipated Abed might be more inclined to respond, considering Jeff's apparent irritation at the mere mention of Britta.

"That's even simpler. Britta put herself out there and he walked away, making her the underdog, the Aniston." Abed explained.

"That's ridiculous," Jeff scoffed.

Addy rolled her eyes.

How had she found herself rolling her eyes so much at barely her first class? "I think she's cool," She commented.

Both Abed and Jeff furrowed their eyebrows at what she had just said; for different reasons. Abed seemed interested in why Britta was "cool", while Jeff was horrified to hear that someone thought Britta was cool.

"You don't know what you're saying," Jeff said.

Addy scoffed, "What she did was actually kind of brave. I can't believe you were the same moron that turned her down," As she spoke, her tone turned sour, almost bittersweet, just like Jeff's thoughts.

His eyes slowly widened. Just when he thought he'd escaped the events from the Transfer Dance, the universe proved he would never escape having embarrassed Britta Perry in front of the entire school.

It also answered his question from before. He had seen Addy before, and she had seen him too. They hadn't shared any type of conversation, but it was one of those faces you could feel lingering in the background, witnessing the horrid night of the Transfer Dance.

"That's where you know me from?" He exclaimed in complete bafflement. "Just so you know, I'm a great guy and that's her loss." Jeff clarified while at the same time, he tried to look careless of the situation, which was evident that he was still butt-hurt about.

"Oh, I bet you are," Addy replied, her voice laced with sarcasm.

As her gaze drifted away from him, she could feel Jeff's eyes on her, squinting, while he tried to think of a quick response.

Now, Addy's attention was away from the two men. She focused solely on the blonde while asking herself: Why don't her friends think she's cool?

Lost in her train of thought, Abed's loud commentary made her snap quickly out of it, "I'm just excited about this year, looking to improve things. Hoping we can move away from the relationship-y stuff into faster-paced escapades." He continued. Once again, Abed talking nonsense that anyone barely understood.

Then, Abed's mind drifted to all the possible outcomes for this supposed "new season", as he kept referring. While Jeff couldn't take his eyes off the new girl, which wasn't so new, it still got his mind stirring new ideas.

Maybe what he needed was a fresh start with someone else.

"I'm so glad you're joining us for our first Anthropology assignment!" A brunette squealed in excitement, prompting Addy to slightly squint her eyes at the overly high pitch of her voice.

Following the Anthropology class, the group was tasked with their first assignment of the week, requiring collaboration in teams. Abed swiftly arranged for Addy to join their group as soon as the assignment was announced.

Despite encountering resistance from Jeff, Addy officially became part of their Anthropology group, introduced to the rest of Jeff and Abed's circle of friends.

Among the group, a girl named Annie stood out. She appeared to be the youngest out of everyone and exuded a sweet demeanor. To foster a sense of inclusion, Annie extended an invitation to Addy to join her, Abed, and another member for lunch.

"Yeah, it's not like I had a choice since Abed dragged me into this!" Addy replied, matching Annie's enthusiastic tone with a layer of sarcasm that went unnoticed by the others. "I've also been here for almost a year and I barely know anybody," She added.

"You've been here for a year?" Troy, the third member at the table, interjected. "I've never seen you around here before," He stated bluntly, squinting at her in confusion.

Troy's grunts filled the air, his gaze fixed on Addy, leaving the table in collective silence as they puzzled over his intentions.

Sensing Addy's discomfort with Troy's intense stare, Annie intervened, "Troy, what are you doing?" She asked, hoping to prevent him from driving the 'new' girl away.

"Engraving her face in my brain so I don't forget it," Troy replied with a heavy sigh, eliciting a chuckle from Addy at his response.

"Don't worry, you won't forget a pretty face like mine," Addy teased, flashing a smile at Troy. She raised her hands, palms downward, to showcase her features, managing to make Troy blush slightly in response.

"Good. 'Cause I wasn't gonna last any longer," He confessed, punctuated by a nervous chuckle as he mimicked wiping sweat from his forehead.

"Have you met anyone else?" Annie inquired eagerly, glad to have another girl around to converse with.

"I met this guy called Jeff," Addy replied, her tone tinged with distaste. "I'm guessing he's your typical handsome douche type of guy," She added, uncertainty. "Did I get that right, Abed?" Her eyes sought Abed's approval, attempting to align with his perspective and 'speak his language.'

He nodded.

"Oh! You've met Jeff," Annie remarked, her expression clouded with feigned interest, concealing her underlying disappointment with a chuckle.

Despite knowing that Addy meeting Jeff didn't necessarily imply anything significant, Annie couldn't shake off the twinge of jealousy. Having known Jeff's true nature for over a year, she couldn't help but suspect it was only a matter of time before he tried to kiss Addy too.

Annie felt an urge to extract information from Addy—details about her conversation with Jeff, how they had met, and Jeff's initial impression of Addy. However, her train of thought was derailed as Jeff confronted Britta in the middle of the cafeteria, igniting a chain of events that culminated in Britta humiliating him in front of a big crowd.

Troy, caught up in the Britta-mania, joined in, hoping to engage with some of the girls present.

Feeling her heart rate increase, Annie hastily stood up and left the table, leaving Addy and Abed confused as they watched their friends' sudden departure, wondering why they had gone.

After a chaotic lunch break, Addy made her way to the study room, the designated meeting place for the study group. Despite being slightly late, she hoped her new classmates would forgive her tardiness.

Her nerves contributed to her delay. She was eager to meet the rest of the group but found herself hesitating, wanting to ensure she made a good impression on them.

As she walked down the hallway, she encountered Abed, who appeared to be in a flurry of activity. He issued orders to those around him, who were dressed in formal attire and carrying what seemed like wedding-related items.

Addy furrowed her eyebrows at the sight and felt compelled to approach Abed to seek clarification.

"Abed... why are you wearing one of those ugly t-shirts only old people use?" She asked, her arms folded across her chest.

Her gaze remained fixed on the graphic t-shirt, which was different from the one she had seen him wearing earlier. She couldn't help but wonder why he had switched to a black shirt adorned with a print of a tuxedo.

"No time to explain. We're doing a wedding... episode. Take these," Abed instructed, his words rushed, indicating he was pressed for time.

Without further elaboration, he handed Addy a bouquet of white roses. Curiously, she sniffed them, attempting to discern their scent, only to realize the pedicel was made out of plastic.

As she looked up, Abed had already disappeared from her sight, leaving her confused. Addy found herself tasked with carrying the flowers, though she remained clueless about their purpose. With a sense of urgency, she hurried to locate the study room, assuming Abed would be there.

From outside the room, she observed the group gathered inside, surrounded by wedding-like decorations already adorning the place. Breathless, Addy entered the room, attempting to catch her breath.

"I'm here!" She announced, as though she were marking her attendance just in time for the professor to note her presence. To her surprise, she stumbled upon the study group amid an argument—an unexpected occurrence on her first day getting to know them.

"What the hell is this?" Pierce, the eldest among the group, exclaimed in confusion. The strangers Addy had seen with Abed before now filled the room. He had brought them over to "celebrate" Jeff and Britta's wedding.

Encountering this unexpected event, Addy was just as confused as Pierce, if not more so. She hadn't fully delved into the chaos that reigned the lives of the study group, but this situation introduced a whole new level of weirdness even for them.

"A wedding," Abed replied simply, adding with a whisper, "Episode," for added effect.

"Abed," Troy interjected, drawing his friend's attention. Unaware of the development that occurred during his absence, Abed had missed certain conversations, including the one about Jeff kissing Annie.

Abed's expression shifted to one of stoicism, even disappointment — why had he gone through all the trouble of orchestrating the wedding for Jeff and Britta in the first place?

Jeff's true colors were beginning to surface.

"When?" Abed's inquiry cut through the tension.

"Yeah, when?" Britta repeated her demand for answers palpable.

But, could Jeff offer any justification for his mistake? That was Britta's burning question. Perhaps she hoped he would present one of his usual excuses to mitigate his reprehensible behavior.

"That's inappropriate. I'm assuming on the mouth!" Pierce presumed, speaking on Jeff's behalf.

"It was after the Transfer Dance," Annie confessed, her voice heavy with guilt.

"Oh? So I say 'I love you' and you go tongue a teenager!" Britta exploded in fury, her accusatory finger aimed squarely at Annie, as though she were solely to blame for Jeff Winger's actions.

Impressed yet apprehensive, Addy felt compelled to interject in an argument, despite being a stranger to most of them.

"You guys are crazy!" She erupted out of frustration, fed up with the absurd drama unfolding before her, unaware that more was yet to be said. "You guys just go around sucking each other off like a bunch of creeps!" She added with evident disgust.

"Not everyone's having that type of fun, Addy," Troy complained, offended to be included in that sentence when he wasn't experiencing half of the "fun" Jeff had.

"You know what I mean," Addy clarified.

"I don't," Troy admitted, bowing his head in embarrassment.

"I'm out!" She announced decisively.

With determined strides, she made her way toward Jeff, her gaze scrutinizing his face, a mixture of anger and disappointment, directed solely to himself. He realized he had blown whatever slim chance there was between him and Addy, and she intended to make it clear that his image in her eyes would never change.

As she glanced one last time at him, she pressed the plastic bouquet of roses against his chest, causing Jeff to stumble at her forceful push. And with that, Addy departed from the group, leaving the arguing to resume as soon as she stepped outside.

"Hey, you." Jeff approached Addy with ease, though he'd been running through the halls to find her and needed to catch his breath. Upon hearing his voice, Addy turned on her heels, listening to his rhythmic breaths until he finally composed himself.

Though facing him, Addy did her best to avoid eye contact with Jeff. She was still strangely upset with him for what happened earlier, wondering if he would even care enough to explain.

But she didn't want to be part of whatever trouble he was in; she just wanted to know about it, you know, like a nosy person would.

"What do you want?" She snarled, arms folded across her chest, a light huff escaping her nostrils. Her question fell on deaf ears as Jeff remained silent, causing Addy to worry that it took him too long to answer. "Oh, my god," She gasped, bringing her fingers to cover her opened mouth.

Unlike before, Jeff now had a bandage covering his nose, with dried blood still visible. The tips of his fingers bore similar signs of injury. "What happened after I left?"

"Long story," Jeff responded. It really wasn't. "Look, I know what you witnessed in there was new for you. But I need a favor,"

"A favor? I think you're busy enough to be asking for favors." Addy released a scoff-laugh, surprised by Jeff's audacity to ask for her help. She swiftly turned in her tracks, attempting to escape Jeff's presence, but he was too insistent.

Jeff Winger wasn't the type of man to beg for anything, but he really wanted her attention.

"I need you to do something for me," He murmured, trailing behind her, annoyed by her deliberate attempts to avoid him. Growing frustrated, Jeff's fingers wrapped around her bicep, pulling her aside to make her listen.

With this move, curious students passing by occasionally glanced at them suspiciously.

"You're being creepy," Addy whispered, echoing the sentiment of all the students passing by, but Jeff couldn't afford to lose her attention while he still had it.

"I need you to pretend to be my partner, for now," Jeff informed, getting straight to the point. His intentions were clear and concise. Unbeknownst to her, he'd crafted a simple plan for this new scheme of his.

Addy cocked a brow, "Partner? What do you mean by that?" She asked.

Maybe Jeff had chosen the wrong word; "partner" didn't quite capture what he intended. He needed something stronger, more direct, to ensure Addy fully understood.

"I need you to pretend to be my- -" Jeff's lips pressed into a thin line. Why was it so difficult for him to say it? He couldn't bring himself to articulate the words. But after much hesitation and concerned glances from Addy, he managed to push through. "Girlfriend." He finally pronounced.

He couldn't help but feel a sense of pride that the word had come out of his mouth. He hadn't uttered it in a long time, possibly never before.

Addy scoffed incredulously, taken aback by his request, "What? Are you crazy? You almost got married to Beetlejuice, and Annie is lovesick for you!"

"That's the issue," Jeff pointed out, lowering his voice in a whisper. He didn't want his plan to be overheard and possibly spoiled. "I don't want them to be after me."

Under other circumstances, Jeff would've relished the attention he received from women. He wished he could go back to when he first met Britta. She was very different, unique, and a lot more mysterious. And hot. That's what initially sparked his interest in her. But by the end of the semester, their relationship had become a complex turmoil of emotions he didn't care to hash out, especially when Annie got involved as well.

"Too bad. They're already latched onto you." Addy shrugged.

"They won't. Not after they see me with you," Jeff stated confidently, "You'll also be a good addition to the group. We don't want to include Chang." He admitted.

"Chang? You guys were going to include that guy?" Addy worried, genuinely concerned that the group even considered adding him. She recalled all the crazy stuff he used to do; being in his Spanish class was quite an experience. "Might as well throw any other idiot in the mix!" She exclaimed, trying to lighten the mood.

"Yeah, you." He replied.

Addy couldn't help but roll her eyes at his response. "I wouldn't exactly call you a complete idiot," Jeff backtracked, "But maybe you can stop worrying about Chang and focus on what might affect us here," He redirected the conversation to his intentions, which were his primary concern.

"Us?"

"Just me," He corrected himself. "So? Are you in or not?" Jeff raised his shoulders in a slight shrug, believing he'd made all the necessary amends for Addy to join his scheme.

"What's in it for me?" Addy raised her chin, a smug grin crossing her face. Jeff's eyes squinted, disbelief evident on his face. Was she really asking for something in return?

"What's in it for you?" He repeated, "It doesn't matter. I'm the one who has more to lose here." Jeff clarified.

"No way," Addy disagreed.

She felt even more resistant after Jeff expressed that only his concerns mattered. But that wouldn't be a fair deal, would it? Disregarding what she wanted was pretty selfish of him, to say the least. But selfishness seemed to be his middle name. Nevertheless, for the sake of reaching a mutual agreement, he had to consider her desires.

"I'll think about it." Addy reconsidered quickly.

However, she intended to assert her boundaries. She couldn't allow Jeff to do whatever he wanted.

"Think about it? I don't need you to "think" about it. Just say, 'Yes, I'll do this with you or no, I'd rather jump off a cliff," Jeff replied, his frustration evident in his tone.

"You know what I'd pick," Addy pointed a finger at him, eliciting a scoff from him. "But fine. I guess I could do this little favor for you." She caved, though still not entirely convinced.

"Thank you," He mouthed, trying his hardest not to show gratitude towards her in public.

She shrugged, "You're welcome, I guess."

Her vague response managed to crack a sideways grin on his face, somewhat pleased with it. For him, the deal was already on; they just needed to figure out most aspects of it later on. "Wait... you're not gonna talk to me about the do's and don'ts ?" She wondered.

"Do's and don'ts?"

"Yeah, like the things I can or can't do that might hurt your fragile little feelings," She mocked, feigning a pout while batting her eyelashes at him.

"We can figure that later," He said.

Putting an end to their conversation, Jeff turned around to walk away, leaving Addy stranded in the hallway. Alone with his thoughts, Jeff found himself noticing that he wasn't feeling as pleased as he expected himself to be.

He'd thought he would feel happier about this. He'd finally found a possible escapade to his problem. But proposing the deal to Addy and getting only vague treatment from her didn't make him feel any better. Don't get him wrong, he considered her the perfect candidate for his scheme. She was a beautiful woman — hot even. But he considered her attitude to be a potential problem in the future.
