home again
Alfie had returned to the UK after a long weekend at Hungary. After finishing 13th, her best finish from the season, she was looking forward to having a night in with her parents.
She was not however looking forward to seeing her Uncle and cousin. True she'd have George with her, but any meal with her cousin wasn't a meal worth sacrificing a Tuesday evening for.
Her and George had driven from the airport up to Alfie's House, George in the drivers seat, the pair blasting music through the CD player.
When they arrived at the house, they were met with the unusual sight of Diana and Henry packing the boot of Henry's car franticly. Alfie and George frowned at eachother before stepping out of the car. "Mum? You alright?" Alfie said as they approached the couple
Diana looked up from the boot at her daughter and walked over embracing her in a hug. "Hiya Alfie darling. Great race."
"Thanks Mum." Alfie said, smiling slightly.
Diana turned to George. "You too Mr. Saturday." she teased. Alfie snickered and George chuckled. "Thank you Mrs. Grattan."
Diana instantly frowned at him. "How many times have I told you to call me Diana?"
George winced. "More than enough."
Diana chuckled. She turned back to Alfie and sighed. "It seems your Uncle has had a bit of a breakdown. Your father and I are going there tonight to give him a bit of comfort."
Alfie went to speak, but Diana interrupted. "I know, it's not ideal. If I'm being honest, the man is being slightly dramatic."
Alfie held in her laugh as Diana continued. "But unfortunately, your father insists on sticking to the 'brother code' or something... anyways-" she turned to George, "I know this is a big last minute ask but, would you be able to stay with Alf for the night?"
"Oh Mum he doesn't need to-"
George cut in before Alfie could say anymore. "Of course. I've got spare clothes I didn't wear at Hungary and we can stop off at mine in the morning so I can change into something more sophisticated."
Alfie glanced up at George. "Are you sure? I mean, don't you want to just go home? You've had a long weekend." She tried to reason.
George waved a dismissive hand. "Nonsense."
Diana smiled at him fondly. "Thank you George."
"No problem."
The three heard the voice of Henry shouting for his wife. "Diana love are you ready?" He spotted his daughter and George stood on the driveway and walked up to them, embracing Alfie in a right hug. "Alf you were brilliant in the race."
Alfie hugged her father tightly. "Thanks Dad."
Henry turned to George and held his hand out for the other man to take. "Brilliant driving this weekend mate."
George shook the man's hand, a proud expression on his face. "Thank you Sir, but nothing could compare to your daughters racing this weekend. She was so close to points at one stage."
Diana took this moment to speak up about something that had been boiling up from last night. "Yes until they messed up your pitstop. God knows what happened."
Alfie sighed. "Mum it wasn't their fault. I drove to far forward, they had to move up to the car to get the wheels off-"
"Alf darling it's okay. You're mother's being dramatic."
Diana turned wide eyed to her husband. "Say that again Henry I dare you." she was only teasing, but Henry still clapped his hands, swiftly changing the subject. "Yes well, we have a drive to complete."
Diana turned to Alfie smirking and winked at her. She leaned into her daughter's side and whispered, "Act scary, they'll do whatever."
Alfie chuckled and hugged her mother tight, and then her father. "We'll see you tomorrow then I suppose?"
Henry frowned and looked back to George. "We?"
Diana looked over to her husband, unimpressed. "I told you George was coming not five hours ago and you've already forgotten?"
Henry seemed to remember the conversation they had had and let out a small, "Oh yes".
Diana tutted and rolled her eyes. "Honesty." she muttered.
Alfie chuckled as she watched her parents sit themselves in the car, and slowly back out of the driveway. Henry pushed the horn down as they drove down the street and George and Alfie waved them off. Once the black car had disappeared down the street Alfie sighed. "So much for a family night in."
Gejrgw turned to her and noticed her somber expression. He through and arm round her shoulder and kissed the top of her forehead. "Don't worry Alf. You got me still."
"Yeah but you're annoying."
George removed his arm from around Alfie's shoulders and walked towards his car backwards, still facing Alfie. "Or I can just go home..."
"No please stay!" Alfie rushed up towards him and grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the car. "You also promised my mother you'd stay so you kind of have to."
George chuckled and placed his arm back around Alfie's shoulders. "Fine. Only because I know how scary your mother can get."
"She can be very scary."
"I just don't see how he can be dead." George said finally.
Alfie through a piece of popcorn at his head. "Shhh."
George glared down at Alfie. "Excuse you." he said teasingly.
Alfie ignored him and continued to watch the film (The Sixth Sense) a small smirk playing on her face, as she felt George's eyes burning to to the side of her head.
"Alfie Grattan did you just throw popcorn at me?"
"No"
"Oh really?" George raised his eyes brows at her and took the popcorn bowl out of her hands and placed it on the coffee table in front of them. Alfie turn to glare at him, but George had already stated tickling her sides.
Alfie collapsed back onto the sofa, laughing as George tickled her. "You still want to throw popcorn at me?" he teased.
"No- No- George stop I'm sorry. " Alfie managed to say through fits if laughter.
"Hm? Sorry didn't quote catch that?" George said smirking.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Alfie managed to get out. George finally stopped tickling her and smiled down at her as she caught her breath. Alfie's mouth was still spread in a wide grin, still slightly chucking, eyes shut.
George's own smile slightly faded as he examined her. She looked so beautiful, laying there, joy radiating from her. Alfie opened her eyes and was met with George staring back at her. Her breathing slowed down, as she realised that she was laying underneath George, who had settled his arms next to her head to stabilise himself.
Alfie coughed slightly and George sat up, allowing Alfie to stand up from the sofa. She tunred to the TV to see the film had ended. "Uh, I'm going to head to bed. I made up the spare room for you so, you don't have to sleep on the sofa."
George chuckled slightly. "Thanks Alf." he stood up too, "Do you mind if I use the bathroom?"
Alfie rolled her eyes. "Yes George I actually do mind so you'll have to brush your teeth and do your business in the garden. That sound good?" she said sarcasticly.
George smiled at her and spoke in the same manner. "Funny."
Alfie smiled at him and pointed down the hall towards the bathroom, "Go on."
George left to go to the bathroom and Alfie turned the TV off, switching off the lights in the living room and walking towards her room, where she changed into a large shirt and a pair of pyjama shorts. She heard the bathroom door open, and went to go sort herself out.
When she opened her bedroom door, she was met with the sight of George dressed in tarten pyjama bottoms, and no shirt. Alfie widened her eyes and looked away. "Sorry uh, I was just-"
"Alf."
Alfie looked back at George, "You okay?"
Alfie nodded frantically, "Yeah, yeah fine." She gave him a small smile, which George returned. He walked duo to her and placed a small kiss on her forehead.
"Good night Alfie."
"Good night George."
George have her one last smile before heading down towards the guest room. When he was out of sight, Alfie leant against the the wall letting out a breath.
"Wow." She uttered.
