F O U R
RENUNITED (AGAIN)
It had been months.
Alfie was sick and tired of being cooped up.
She missed Lando.
She missed Dakota, and May.
She missed Alex.
She missed Pierre and Charles.
She missed George.
And she missed racing.
It was eating her up inside, she was itching to sit in the cockpit, to smell the petrol and to feel the rush of her car.
Until, June 2nd, when F1 announced their return to the tracks around the world.
She finally had a date. 5th of July.
And now, it was the 2nd, and she was heading to the airport to meet up with George.
Both had been tested for Covid, so that they could fly together to Austria, where the first race was being held.
As she drove to the airport, she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel.
She was anxious to see George again. It was like torture not being able to see her best friend for months.
Usually, they worked together, and spent a majority of the year hanging around the paddock with their other friends, but now, they could only speak though screens.
Alfie hadn't even realized she had arrived at the airport until she spotted a man standing by the entrance in a bright orange hi vis and a clipboard in his hands.
He was wearing a face shield and motioned for Alfie to role her window down.
Alfie had expected this and put a mask on herself, just so she didn't make the worker feel uncomfortable.
She let her window down and the man spoke. "Hello there. I'm sorry but I can't let you through unless you have ID." he gestured to the clipboard.
"Yeah no worries."
Alfie delved into her handbag and brought out her drivers license. The man inspected it and his eyes widened. She could see him smiling through the shield.
"Alfie Grattan! No way! My-my daughter idolizes you. She wants to be a racing driver when she grows up, I'm looking into karting for her."
Alfie smiled too. "That's awesome! What's her name?"
"Beth. My wife and I are KISS fans, and we named our daughter after the song."
"Well tell Beth from me that if she believes, she can do it. And not to take any rubbish from anyone."
The man smiled gratefully. "Thank you."
"You're welcome..." Alfie trailed off, not knowing the man's name.
"Oh uh, Johnny."
"You're welcome Johnny."
Johnny took a pen from his hand and crossed off something on the clipboard, which Alfie assumed to be her name, as she had already booked her flight. "I let George Russell in not long ago, I suppose you two are heading to Austria?"
Alfie nodded. "Yep, had tests to make sure we can race. Not fun."
Johnny laughed. "Tell me about it."
He put the pen back into his pocket and smiled at her. "I'll buzz you in now. Good luck for Sunday!"
"Thanks! I hope your daughter follows her dream!"
Johnny grinned and walked towards the edge of the entrance gate which opened. As Alfie drove through the gate, she finally registered what Johnny had told her.
His daughter idolized her.
She was someone's idol.
And then another part of his words finally registered in her mind.
George was already here.
Alfie was nervous. She hadn't seen him in a long time and she didn't know how she was going to react.
Knowing her, over the top.
Alfie pulled up into one of the parking spots, and she spotted a tall brunette man, standing next the to entrance doors, holding a suitcase.
George.
Alfie rushed out of the car, grabbed her suitcase, and shouted his name across the car park.
He immediately looked into her direction, and a large smile spread across his face.
"Alf." he muttered to himself.
George abandoned his suitcase and ran across the car park towards her. Alfie left her car's side and ran towards him too.
The two met in the middle and George engulfed Alfie into a hug. His hands around her waist, Alfie flung hers around his neck and buried her head in the crook of his neck.
George lifted her up and spun her around, and Alfie laughed, her voice filled with joy.
George held her in the air for a few moments, before placing her back on her feet, not pulling away from her.
"I've bloody missed you." he muttered.
"I've missed you too."
Neither of them wanted to pull away from their hug, worried that if they did, each would be taken away from the other, so that another four months would pass.
"Alf, as much as I would love to stand here hugging you all day, we have a flight to catch." George chuckled.
"Yeah."
George gave her a final squeeze, and then the two pulled away from their hug.
George pushed Alfie's head into his chest and began to walk towards his suitcase, Alfie dragging hers along with her.
"Ge' off!" Alfie tried to free herself from George's grip, but he just laughed and removed Alfie's suitcase from her grasp.
Alfie was confused until George lifted her up onto his back. Alfie squealed and placed her arms around his neck, and wrapped her legs around his middle, as to not fall off.
George was laughing at Alfie's reaction and she hit his chest, but began to laugh herself.
"Dick." She muttered.
"You've spent way to much time with. Danny."
She hit his chest again.
"Do you want me to drop you Alf?"
"You wouldn't." Alfie gasped.
"Oh yeah? Try me."
Alfie paused, until she flicked the back of his head.
"Right you-" George leant back slightly and Alfie panicked. She clung onto his shirt and tightened her grip around him.
"George! Alright! I'll stop just stand up!"
George was laughing uncontrollably when he stood up.
Alfie rested her head on top of his and spoke. "Shall we continue our quest Sir. Russell."
"We shall Lady Grattan."
Alfie pointed towards the doors of the airport "Onward!"
George shook his head, grinning broadly and took Alfie's suitcase in his hand. He walked, Alfie still on his back towards the doors.
When he reached his suitcase, he turned his head to look at his best friend.
"You've got to get off, I can't have two suitcases and you on my back."
"You're a professional athlete, figure it out."
"And you have arms and legs. Use them."
Alfie pouted childishly but got down anyways. She grabbed her suitcase and rushed through the doors, George calling after her.
"Alfie! Wait!"
The girl laughed and continued running, hearing George following behind her.
"Boarding pass please." The woman at the desk said in a dull tone.
Alfie handed her her boarding pass and the woman checked it with her computer.
Once satisfied, she handed it back to Alfie, and turned to George. "Boarding pass please..." but trailed off when she saw him.
She looked him up and down and smiled slightly.
Alfie had to hold in a laugh as George seemed to realize the woman was checking him out.
"Hi." She said, almost dazed.
"Hi." George said back, clearly uncomfortable under the girl's stare.
Alfie was giggling quietly from where she stood, not far from the two.
George shot her a glare as the woman took George's boarding pass from his hands, and checked it. She seemed to be in a rush, like she wanted to give it back to him soon to talk to him.
George looked at Alfie and mouthed, 'Help me.'
Alfie smirked slightly and shook her head. George gave her his puppy dog eyes, which her knew would break her.
He was forced to look back at the woman when she handed him his boarding pass. She lent on the desk, her hand underneath her chin. She was about to say something until Alfie decided to help George out.
"Hey babe you OK?" she called from where he stood.
George breathed a sigh of relief, as the woman behind the desk, narrowed her eyes at Alfie, before retreating back to her computer.
"Yeah coming love." George replied.
He swiftly walled away from the desk and met Alfie where she stood. "Thank you babe." he teased.
Alfie rolled her eyes, "Would you have rather me left her to flirt with you? It was the first thing that came to mind alright?"
George's face formed into a smirk, "Oh was it now?"
"I hate you."
"Nah you love me."
"Do I?"
"Yes... I mean you do right? Wait-Alfie you didn't answer my question! Hey!"
When they boarded the plane, George had sat by the window, with Alfie next to the lane.
Even if she had to use planes to get to races, she had always hated flying.
When George introduced her to Lost, she had developed a fear of flying, after having nightmares about crashing on a mysterious island with smoke creatures.
As the plane began to take off, Alfie gripped the arm of her seat tight.
George noticed her tense beside him, and he took her hand off the arm and held it in his own and squeezed it.
"We aren't going to crash onto a mysterious island Alf."
"We coul-"
"Do you see any billionaires here? Do you see any American officers? Do you see anyone who remotely looks like Evengelline Lilly or Ian Somerhalder?"
Alfie shook her head. "No..." she muttered quietly.
"We won't crash alright? I promise."
Alfie looked him in the eye. "If we die, I am so dragging you to the depths of hell with me."
George chuckled. "Sure. Like I'll be going to hell."
"What do you mean sure? Excuse you sir you aren't an angel."
George kept laughing. Alfie frowned. "What?"
"We've lifted off already."
"I-What?" Alfie leaned over him to look out of the window. He was right.
Alfie smiled slightly, as she looked back at George who had a small smirk in his face.
"Thank you." Alfie muttered, almost in audibly.
"I'm sorry, didn't quite catch that."
Alfie rolled her eyes. "Thank you."
George smiled at her. "You're welcome."
Neither of them realized that they were still holding onto each other's hand.
