My heart is a haunted house

πΉπΌβππ and Gary were bustling around, helping the campers rehearse for the play. Becky was at the front, enthusiastically teaching dance moves to the campers while singing the song. Gary, meanwhile, was trying to snap a girl out of her dazed state, his frustration evident as he repeatedly waved his hand in front of her face. On the sidelines, the outsider campersβWednesday, Lilith, Pugsley, and Joelβsat on a bench, wearing Native American outfits. As the campers finished their song and dance routine, they struck their final pose while Becky and Gary looked on.
"Happy, happy turkey day. Hunger pains will go away. When you hear the pilgrims say it's happy turkey day. Happy, happy turkey day. Let's all eat the Indian way. As Bastille and Cape Cod Day. On happy turkey day," the campers sang in unison, their voices echoing through the rehearsal area.
Amanda stepped forward, proudly showing off her pilgrim outfit. Becky immediately rushed to her, beaming with pride. "Look at you. Oh, Amanda, you look perfect! You're just the prettiest pilgrim I've ever seen! Gar, come and take a look at this," she called out to Gary, who was still dealing with the dazed camper.
Just then, two camper boys arrived, dragging Lilith, Wednesday, Pugsley, and Joel behind them. Wednesday had his arm protectively around Lilith's waist. "Here they are! We caught them by the pay phone," one of the boys announced.
Wednesday maintained his usual blank expression as he addressed Becky. "We were calling the FBI."
Lilith added, "Uncle Fester is in trouble."
Joel, looking timid, chimed in, "We were running a check."
Becky, looking stern, crossed her arms and said, "And you are late for your fittings."
Lilith, defiant as always, replied, "I don't do pageants. Not my thing."
Becky gasped, shocked by Lilith's defiance. "But... but you must!"
Gary, having finally dealt with the dazed camper, approached the group. "Don't you want to help me realize my vision?"
Wednesday tightened his hold on Lilith, his voice cold and cutting. "Your work is puerile and under-dramatized. You lack any sense of structure, character, or the Aristotelian unities."
Gary's face contorted with anger and annoyance as he glared at Wednesday. "Young man, I am getting just a tad tired of your attitude problem."
Before Wednesday could respond, Becky clapped her hands loudly, capturing the campers' attention. "Everyone, campers! I have a wonderful idea," she announced with an overly enthusiastic smile. "Wednesday, Lilith, Pugsley, and young Mr. Glicker here, well, they have just never quite latched on to the Chippewa spirit, nor have some of their little comrades. Isn't that sad?"
"Yes!"
"Don't we just hate that?"
"Yes!"
"Don't we wish they would just die?"
"Yes!"
"Oh, no we don't. But you know what we're gonna do with them?" Gary's eyes gleamed with a disturbing mixture of malice and excitement. "We're going to make an example. We are going to show that anyone, no matter how odd, or pale, or chubby, or strange, can still have a darn good time. Whether they like it or not."
The next thing Lilith knew, she and the group were back at the Harmony Hut. She was perched on Wednesday's lap, his arms wrapped protectively around her. Pugsley and Joel sat beside them, looking equally uneasy. Gary and Becky stood in front of them, holding up VHS tapes of Disney movies. Lilith didn't mind Disney; she enjoyed most of the movies. But it was the two Addams boys she was worried about, especially Wednesday, who clung to her tightly.
"Yes, indeedy. Just the ticket. Bambi," Gary announced, a wicked smile on his face as he popped the tape into the VCR.
The familiar strains of the Disney intro began to play, and the screen filled with the cheerful animation of woodland creatures. Wednesday's grip on Lilith tightened even more. His dark eyes, usually filled with mischief and intensity, now looked pained.
Lilith placed a soothing hand on his cheek, trying to comfort him. "It's okay, Wednesday. We'll get through this," she whispered, her voice calm and steady.
"The Little Mermaid," Gary announced with a broad smile, Becky mirroring his enthusiasm.
Wednesday's voice cut through the air, tense and filled with warning. "Stop it."
Joel, his eyes wide with fear, whispered to Pugsley, "He's only a child."
Gary ignored the pleas and slid The Little Mermaid tape into the video player. As the cheerful Disney logo appeared on the screen, Wednesday turned to Joel, his expression resolute. "Don't worry. We're getting out of here."
Joel glanced at him, then back at the TV. "But... it's Disney."
Gary and Becky nodded in unison, their smiles eerily synchronized. "Yes!" they exclaimed.
Wednesday tightened his hold on Lilith, seeking comfort in her presence. She responded by gently playing with his hair, her fingers moving soothingly through the dark strands. Leaning in, she kissed his cheek and then his neck, her soft touch aiming to ease his discomfort.
Lilith then glanced at Pugsley, who was watching the scene unfold with a mixture of curiosity and anxiety. She extended her hand to him, offering silent support. Pugsley hesitated for a moment before taking her hand, his grip firm and grateful. With her other hand, Lilith continued to rub Wednesday's neck, her touch providing a small measure of relief.
The opening scenes of The Little Mermaid began to play, the bright colours and cheerful music filling the room. But for the Addams children and Joel, the vibrant animation felt more like a sinister trap.
"We'll get through this," she whispered softly to him, her voice a soothing balm against the rising tide of anxiety.
Pugsley, holding onto Lilith's hand, felt a strange sense of unity and determination. Despite the surreal situation, he knew they would find a way out together.
"The hills are alive with the sound of music. With songs they have sung for a thousand years."
"And they knew that it was much more than a hunch. That this group must somehow from a family. That's the way we all became The Brady Bunch."
"Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya tomorrow. You're always a day away."
As darkness fell after hours of enduring countless Disney movies, Lilith and the group emerged from the Harmony Hut. Wednesday held Lilith's hand tightly, his grip a comforting anchor. Waiting for them outside were Becky, Gary, and the other campers, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and expectation.
"Well, good evening. Is there anything you'd like to say to everyone?" Gary asked, a self-satisfied smile playing on his lips.
Wednesday squeezed Lilith's hand a bit tighter, then stepped forward. "Yes."
Becky looked at them with a gleeful smile. "And just what might that be?"
Wednesday took a deep breath, his voice steady. "I'm not perky."
Amanda, standing nearby, scoffed. "That's for damn sure."
Lilith shot Amanda a cold stare, silencing her with a look. Wednesday continued, unphased by the interruption. "But I want to be."
Gary's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "You do?" he asked, a hint of disbelief in his voice.
"I want to smile and sing and dance and be part of Gary's vision," Wednesday said, his tone unwavering.
Gary looked at Becky, his disbelief melting into something akin to pride. Becky beamed with pride and joy. "Oh, darling, do you really mean it?"
With that, Wednesday's lips began to twitch. His expression contorted into a painful struggle as he forced himself to form a bright, unnatural smile. It was a smile that was uncomfortable for Lilith, who knew and loved Wednesday's real, rare smilesβthose brief, genuine moments of joy.
The forced, fake smile sent a shiver down the campers' spines, causing them to step back in fear. Becky, oblivious to the unease, gushed, "Isn't he handsome?"
Amanda clung to Becky's arm, her voice trembling. "He's scaring me!"
Becky and Gary, however, were beaming with pride, completely missing the discomfort radiating from the campers and the forced nature of Wednesday's smile.
Lilith, feeling the tension in Wednesday's grip and seeing the strain in his eyes, stepped closer to him. She gently squeezed his hand, a silent reminder that they were in this together. As she did, she leaned in and kissed his cheek.Β
Wednesday's smile faltered for a moment, replaced by a brief flash of genuine affection as he glanced at Lilith. Then, regaining his composure, he maintained the forced smile, playing along with Gary and Becky's expectations for now.
