Two

Season one, Episode three
Winning a battle, Losing the war

Today was Dead Baby bike race and for Maggie, it was the most exciting time of the year. During her college years, she used to sit by the window and laugh at all the stupid people crash their bikes. Now she actually got to treat those stupid people.

"Chief, 'Dead Baby' bike race started 20 minutes ago" Bailey stopped briefly before continuing down the hall with her interns following after.

"All right, people! Dead baby bike race day!" The Chief yelled, clapping his hands to get the attention of the Doctor around him.

Maggie couldn't help but get excited, it was like an added event to a tradition and this was so much better then watching it from her window.

"Every year, this bar-"

"The dead baby bar" Maggie added.

"Every year, they hold this underground bike race" George finished, walking out of the elevator like everyone else they headed straight to the yellow fabric.

"Don't you wonder why someone would name a bar something so disgusting?" Izzie complained.

"No, it's freaking awesome" Maggie chuckled, shaking her head as she tried to get the yellow fabric on her body.

"Keep your pants on, Nancy Drew" Christina said, completely ignoring Maggie like everyone else.

"The race is completely illegal and-"

"Crazy" Meredith finished, "A bunch of bike messengers racing against traffic, trying to beat each other for free shots of tequila"

"Cool" Maggie said at the same time.

"I agree with Maggie, All-out, no-holds-barred competition sounds like fun" Alex smirked when Maggie brought her fist up for a fist bump.

"Only you guys would think that" Izzie commented.

"The race doesn't even have any rules. Except eye-gouging no eye-gouging" George told the group excitedly, he was pumped about this day and it made Maggie laugh.

"We're gonna he trapped in the pit band-aiding idiots when we could be up in the O.R" Christina shook her head in disappointment.

"There are tons of people that come in here for major injuries, I once watched a guy flip over a car and break his arm" Maggie smiled, turning her back so that George could tie her up.

"What kind of people engage in a race that has, as its only rule, that you can't rip out the eyeballs of another human being?" George kept going about the race.

"Men, Georgie, Men" Maggie slapped George's shoulders, those men were idiots nonetheless but they sure were entertaining.

"I need someone up to the O.R. floor, the Chief needs a right hand" Bailey said, walking up to the group of interns.

Maggie didn't bother raising her hand like everyone else, she would much rather be in the E.R. with the injured bicyclist.

"George" Bailey picked, "Okay, people. The rules of trauma: don't mingle with the E.R. interns they don't know their add from their esophagus. Sew fast, discharge faster, get bodies up to the O.R. and don't let me catch you fighting over patients. Got it?"

Maggie rushed after Bailey, the rest of the interns following after.

"Oh, it's like candy but with blood which is so much better!" Christina dazed are the patients.

"Yum" Maggie smiled.

"Oh, my god. Mine" Christina yelled out and walked toward the guy on the stretcher.

"No! I saw him first!" Izzie yelled.

"Oh, yeah, baby. I call him" Maggie pointed to the man sitting on the bed with nails in his stomach.

"You'll have to beat me to him first" Alex replied soon after, he was getting ready to run over there but Maggie pushed him hard, making his stumble to the side.

"Sucker"

Although pushing Alex was fun, he didn't think so. He demanded a win or lose game of heads or tails.

"Heads- he's mine. Tails he's yours" Alex grabbed the quarter from his pocket.

"And why do you get to be heads?" Maggie pondered.

"Because I have a head and honey, you are a tail" Alex smiled, he thought that it was a pretty good comeback.

"Oh sweetie, are you saying that a women's never told you that you give good head?" Maggie faked a frown, "That must hurt you... right here" She pointed to her heart.

Alex rolled his eyes, flipping the coin it landed on tails, "Mm, Tails" Maggie gloated.

"No this ones mine" Alex snapped back.

"So you don't give good head and you're a sore loser" Maggie mocked, "Go away Alex before you lose your head"

"It's superficial, why do you want it anyway? It's cool but it's superficial" Alex said trying to convinced Maggie to let him have it.

"Those things could've ruptured his peritoneum" Maggie argued.

"He's sitting up and he's talking to us" Alex said fighting back.

Maggie turned her head when the guy on the other side of the curtain opened it, "Viper?" She laughed out.

"Mags?" His British accent filled her ears, she wanted to hug her old friend but he was also very bloody.

"Mags?" Alex repeated, looking at Maggie in question.

"Are you gonna take these out and sew me up so I can win my race?" Viper asked, pointing to his wound.

"We can't just pull them out, Viper" Maggie began to explain but the groaning from the injured man made her look at Alex.

"What the hell are you doing?" Maggie seethed.

"Oh, wicked"

"It's a superficial wound, sew him up and let him finish his race" Alex handed her the nails and walked away, making Maggie turn her attention to Viper.

"I thought you were done with this shit?" Maggie asked, pointing to his wound and then around at every other injured person.

"Yeah well, I've got to find a thrill somehow" Viper shrugged.

"You're such an idiot. Come on, let's get you patched up" Maggie shook her head, helping him lay down on the bed he was sitting on.

She grabbed the suture kit and began sewing him up, "Ahh. You've always had a nice touch" He winced.

"Shut up"

"And you are such a rocking babe, but you know that" Viper added, "Hows Pat, you still keep her around?"

"Viper, seriously stop" Maggie hushed him. They stared at each other for a small moment, "And yes, shes still my roommate but I think that you should really let me take you up for some test, I could run a C.T. to see if you have any internal bleeding"

"The one person you still kept around and No thank you, I've got a race to get back to" Viper dismisses.

"You can't go back out there, the stitches could break and it could get infected" Maggie protested, rolling her eyes at the comment he made.

"That doesn't mean I can't cross that finish line" Viper told her, "There's a party at the finish line. Do you want to meet me there?"

Maggie looked up at him and rolled her eyes, "One test Viper, just to make sure you're okay and then you can go"

"I can't do it, got to go" Viper stood his ground.

"Fine, whatever. Just so you know, you are leaving against medical advice and I would actually urge you to stay" Maggie took of her gloves, she was frustrated at the man.

"The frat guy said I could go" Viper reminded her.

"Since when do you listen to douche frat boys?" Maggie questioned, "Whatever, you'll have to sign an A.M.A. form"

"Darling, I will do anything you want me to" Viper whispered into her ear.

"I will put more holes into your body with the same nails that you came in with. Knock it off" Maggie told him, a smile was creeping out and she definitely couldn't let that happen.

"Come here" Viper said, grabbing the forms, a smile willingly leaving his own lips.

He got up from the bed and began walking to the door only to come back and swiftly pull Maggie into a kiss, "Why did you do that?"

"It was for good luck, Mags" Viper looked at her one last time before walking out of the room, leaving Maggie alone.

She began cleaning up after Viper, looking up from the window she saw her brother.

"What do you want, Derek?" She opened the door.

"You go around kissing patients now?" He asked, his tone was belittling and Maggie hated it.

"Don't act like you care, Derek. I can do whatever I want" Maggie snapped back at him.

"I do care, why do you think I'm even talking to you about this?" Derek said, his voice sounded shocked by the accusation but Maggie knew better.

"Derek, if you cared just an ounce, you would've never came to Seattle" Maggie held her fingers up at Derek.

"Don't make everything about you, Margaret" Derek seethed.

Maggie turned her body as fast as she was able, "Well at least just this once, something will be about me" She threw the trash in the bin and rushed out, if she had to stay a minute longer in that room with Derek, she would've lost it.

"Maggie!" Izzie yelled as she was turned the corner.

"What do you want?" Maggie whined.

"He's crashing" Izzie grabbed Maggie's arm and pulled her into the room.

"Okay, well call a code" Maggie said as if the blonde in front of her was dumb, "I don't know what you expect me to do"

"I can't! I'm not supposed to, he's brain-dead" Izzie finally told her.

"Then he's dead-dead. You have to let him go" Maggie looked at her as if she was crazy, trying to save a dead guy? Now that was weird.

"No. It's only been 5 hours and 33 minutes, he's supposed to get 6 hours" Izzie looked over at Maggie and then back to the monitor.

"What are we supposed to do, it's not our call" Maggie questioned.

"He's a person. We're doctors" Izzie looked at her as if she had two heads.

"He's a dead person. We're not god" Maggie said with the exact same tone as Izzie.

"We can't just stand here and do nothing while he does. He had the right to the next 27 minutes" Izzie tried to make her aide of the argument, and it was pretty good.

"What the hell" Maggie groaned, "I'll get the dopamine, you get the blood. We'll transfuse him" She walked out of the room and straight to the drug room.

Izzie and Maggie pulled Meredith into there little scheme along the way and they were all meeting Christina in the stairwell.

"He's stable" Meredith shouted up to Christina.

"For now. I had a radiologist look at his chest films, he had a traumatic aortic injury. It's gonna rupture and bleed out" Christina walked down the stairs, stopping when they were all standing next to each other.

"So he needs surgery" Izzie pointed out.

"If he's gonna remain a viable organ donor, yeah" Christina confirmed.

"If he's gonna live"

"Izzie, come on-" Maggie tried.

"No. I'm not giving up on him. He has the surgery, he lives longer. That's the point, so I'm going to find the family, you guys get him into surgery" Izzie stopped at the top the the stairs, opening the door when she was finished.

"She's a nutcase" Maggie told them.

"So who do we go to for surgery - Bailey?" Meredith asked.

"We need to go higher than Bailey" Christina tapped Maggie of the shoulder before sprinting up the stairs.

"Dr. Collazo?" Maggie asked.

"If I can get to Burke, he'll be easier to convince" Christina rushed.

Maggie followed the two girls into the men's restroom, none of them have the guts to walk fully in so they just stood there with the door cracked.

"Dr. Burke" Meredith said first.

"Hello!"

"Okay" Meredith said, shutting the door.

"Dr. Burke, um, I know you're busy but our John Doe needs an Aortic Repair" Christina tried next.

"The guy from this morning?" Burke asked, "Isn't he legally dead?"

"He's actually still kind of around" Maggie pushes the door wider so that the Doctor could see her.

"We have him two units P. LR.V.C.s and put him on pressors" Christina pushed Maggie out of the doorway.

"On whose orders?"

Christina shut the door, only to come back seconds later with Maggie, "Mine"

"You gave a brain-dead John Doe a blood transfusion without consulting anyone and now you want me to repair his heart?" Burke turned front he sink to the paper towels, looking at Maggie as he did so.

"Well, yeah pretty much"

"You do enjoy crossing the line, don't you?" Burke asked, letting out a small smile.

"Sometimes" Maggie shrugged making Christina elbow her in the stomach.

"He's an excellent candidate for organ donation" Meredith pushed between the two interns.

"I am a surgeon. I save lives, this guys already dead and I'm damn sure that Collazo would flip if she heard this. Now, this is a men's room either whip one out or close the door" Burke told them. The three looked at each other and then shut the door.

"I feel like that went pretty well?" Maggie tried to lighten the mood but failed when she received dirty looks, "Okay it went bad"

The four interns were still on the same scheme, they needed the Chief to override Burke's no and the best way to do that is through the V.I.P patient.

"What did I do?" George paused from taking a bite from his sandwich and looked at them.

"Tell me, Georgie, Does the liver from our John Doe match your guy?" Maggie crossed her arms and stepped ahead.

"It's very close. Same type, same size. U.N.O.S. couldn't find a better match, why?" George shrugged.

"He's the Chief's V.I.P., right?" Izzie asked next.

"Right"

"How much would you kill to be in on a transplant surgery?" Christina practically was glowing.

"You underestimate me. I'm not a baby, I'm your colleague. You don't have to manipulate me, if you want something, all you have to do is ask" George smirked not knowing what he was getting into.

"Just what I wanted to hear" Maggie smiled, sitting down next to George, her face went neutral again, "You are going to go over Collazo's head, to the Chief"

"Nope. Give me something easier" George's face fell, which was kind of funny since Maggie laughed at the sight.

They loosely followed after George, they wanted to hear him speak to the Chief and plus if anything went wrong Maggie wanted to be the one to witness it.

"We are so going to hell. Collazo is sending us straight to hell" Meredith said next to Izzie.

"I'm already going there, that don't bother me much" Maggie shrugged, not bothering to look at the stares she was getting from the blonde beside her.

"On an express train" Christina said ignoring Maggie.

"If it works" Izzie added.

"What are you doing?" Alex asked, walking up to the four interns.

"None of your business, satan" Maggie groaned, she continued to watch the Chief and George, this time Collazo was stopped so they all could talk.

"This would be better if the Head of Cardio wasn't informed. Burke is such a nark" Maggie sighed.

"Yes!" Izzie whispered. Maggie let out a laugh when she saw George turn around and walk away from a Collazo, she watched the Doctor turn her head and look at the group of interns, making Maggie wave.

"Maggie!" Izzie yelled, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the rest of them.

"Ugh, what" Maggie shook Izzie's hand off of her arm, "Let's go watch the surgery" She smiled, heading to the O.R. gallery with the other interns following closely behind.

They sat as close as they could, each one of them rolled there eyes when they noticed that Alex somehow wormed his way onto the surgery.

"I seriously hate that guy" Christina said, looking down at the surgery.

"Agreed, if he was being mugged I would cross the street and pretend not to notice" Maggie nodded along as she took a drink of her coffee.

"Alex is vermin. That surgery is ours" Meredith shook her head at Maggie.

"At least Burke is doing the surgery. I don't care about Alex" Izzie said, taking a total different look at it.

"Whatever" Maggie rolled her eyes, "Our buddy, Georgie did good, didn't know you had it in you"

"I'm gonna have to dodge Burke and Collazo for the rest of my career. He could kill me and make it look like an accident" George stared at the surgery in a daze.

"The police called. They've identified your John Doe, his wife is on the way" Suzy, one of the nurses walked into the Gallery and told the group. Maggie watched Christina and Izzie leave the room, she would much rather watch this guy get cut open then have to deal with that.

The day was over and the Interns parted way, she already texted Pat and told her to meet her at Joes, after today she was definitely going to need a drink.

She walked into the small bar across the street and immediately saw Pat, her blonde hair and pink top was hard to miss.

"Pat, thank god" Maggie climbed into the bar stool and set stuff on the empty chair next to her, "Tennessee Whisky, Joe"

"Tough day?" Pat said, looking at her friend with raised eyebrows.

"Dead Baby Bike Race" Was all Maggie said for Pat to get the hint.

"Right" Pat raised her glass and pressed it against Maggie's.

"And I saw Viper" That made Pat spit out her drink.

"What?"

"Came in to the ER with nails in his stomach" Maggie nodded.

"I thought he was done?" Pat questioned.

"Yeah, me too. Told me that he needed to find a thrill so he started back up" Maggie took her last gulp of the drink and set down her glass, pointing to her empty drink so Joe knew she needed another, "And he kissed me"

"He what?"

"Full on kissed" Maggie confirmed, "Derek's face was priceless though"

"He saw?" Pat grimaced.

"Oh, yeah. After Viper left, he came into the room and tried to guilt trip me" Maggie rolled her eyes at the single thought of her brother.

"Douche"

Maggie agreed to that. It wasn't like Viper was some random dude, she had met him when she first came to Seattle for college, her and her roommate, that so happened to be Pat, wanted to explore the city so they took there new fake I.Ds and headed to the bars. Viper was fun, he had been a lot of fun for the four years that Maggie was in college but it all stopped when she got into Harvard for Med school, she left suddenly, only saying goodbye to Pat.

"Does he still look the same?" Pat questioned.

"Yeah, a little skinnier but definitely" Maggie smiled at the thought, half of her still wished she kept in contact.

"What about that Alex guy you're always complaining about?" Pat sat there and played with her drink, which was typical, she always nursed her drink ever since Maggie could remember.

"What about him?" Maggie scoffed.

"He's cute, right?"

"I'm starting to throw up in my mouth, I can feel it rising" Maggie exaggerates.

"Wait, isn't that him?" Maggie turned her body so that she could see the crowd, no sight of Alex anywhere.

"Bahahah, I got you so good" Pat laughed, "So you think he's cute, maybe you should tap it"

"I am not 'tapping' anything. If I want to have sex, I certainly won't rely on Alex to give me pleasure" Maggie finished her third drink, she needed to wrap this up if she was going to get to the hospital in the morning, "I'm going home, are you coming?"

"Nah, I've got to see the dealer. I'll catch you later" Pat waved Maggie off, she got off the stool herself but didn't walk out with Maggie.

On the way home all Maggie could think about was Alex, she thought both sides over maybe he was good at sex but Maggie definitely didn't want to attract any diseases that man carried with him.

Maggie caught up with Meredith and Christina the next day before they entered the hospital, each of them had their own coffee in hand.

"They're everywhere, all the time. Izzie's all perky and George does this thing where he's helpful and considerate, they share food and they say things and they move things and they breathe. Ugh. They're like happy" Meredith complained about Izzie and George for the second time.

"Gross" Maggie shuddered, she was happy that her and Pat were similar.

"Kick them out" Christina shrugged.

"I can't, they just moved in. I asked them to move in" Meredith explained.

"See, that was your first mistake" Maggie's pointed at her.

"I agree with Maggie, you're just gonna suppress everything in some dark, deep, twisted place u til one day you snap and kill them?" Christina asked nonchalant.

"Yep"

"Good plan, my best friend knows the best way to dispose of there body too" Maggie informed them, she was already mapping out ways it could happen.

The two other doctors looked at Maggie and then shrugged, they were definitely used to it by now.

"This is why we are all friends" Christina informed them.

"Why is the Nazi making us stay in the pit two days in a row?" Alex walked up to the three and said.

"Leftovers" Meredith told him.

"Leftovers" He repeated.

"Gotta get to the cyclist that were too drunk, stupid or scared to come to the hospital yesterday" Maggie's added.

"Meanwhile, she gets to do a freakin organ harvest" Alex said, the jealousy in his voice was easy to hear.

"Jealous" Maggie coughed.

"It just kills you doesn't it" Christina looked back.

"What?"

"That two women caught the harvest" Christina explained.

"No it kills me that anyone got the harvest but me. Boobs do not factor into this equation" He corrected her, "Unless, Uh, you want to show me yours"

Maggie glared at him, looking at her coffee and then back at him, "Oops" She said when she faked tripped and dumped some of her drink onto his shirt, "Accident"

"You little-"

"You little, what Alex?" She said when he stopped, "Come on, finish" She felt herself getting pulled by the both of her arms, looking back she saw Meredith and Christina having ahold of them.

"You really need to stop picking fight with people, Maggie" Meredith sighed.

"What? Me" Maggie scoffed, "He was the one sexually harassing Christina" She pulled her arms away from the two girls, straightening her jacket and proceeded to the changing room.

Maggie stood next to Alex as they wrote down their patients injuries, once she was finished she looked at the waiting hall and noticed Viper, "Hey, what's he doing here?" She asked Alex, pointing to Viper.

"Probably crashed his bike- again" He responded like he didn't care.

"He looks like he's in pain, how long has he been waiting?" She looked at her old friend in concern, she watched as his face winced.

"I don't know, I've been busy on real cases" Maggie rolled her eyes at Alex, "He's all yours" He said when she walked away.

"Hey, Viper" She called out to catch his attention, "Viper? Are you okay?" She rushed over to him when she saw him try to contain himself.

He stood up when he saw her, he could barely walk making Maggie wrap her arms around him, "Dude" She tried again but this time she had to balance herself when he fell to the ground, "Holy Shit, Viper" She lifted up his shirt to see the wound he had from last night, "I need help! Someone come help me!" She yelled.

Taking her hand, she put in on the wound to stop the flow of the bleed, she was lucky that she had gloves on. She watched a nurse bring over a gurney and they helped her pick up Viper to set him on it.

"Call the O.R., tell them we're coming and page Dr. Bailey" She instructed the ER nurse, "Alex, we've got to move. Let's go" She looked over at the man and noticed him in a shocked state, "Move your ass, Alex!" She yelled, making him get in front of the gurney and start pushing.

"Clear the way, coming through" The nurse from behind yelled.

"Somebody get the elevator" Alex yelled.

"Can you hurry? I don't know how long I can keep this wound closed" Maggie said from on top of Viper.

Once they were finally in the Elevator, Alex stepped to the side so the doors would close and Maggie kept applying pressure to the wound, this was going to be the longest elevator trip.

"Seriously what the hell, move faster" She yelled at the elevator. Alex moves to the front when the door opened, pulling the gurney into the O.R.

"This a new one? Somebody get her off my patient" Bailey said when they stepped foot into the room.

Maggie got off of Viper but still trying to keep her hand on the wound so he wouldn't bleed, "Maggie, go get cleaned up and scrub in and Alex, go back downstairs"

"Yeah, but I helped" He told her, watching Maggie leave the room to go scrub in.

"Help? They tell me in the pit that you only want to take the hot cases. Every pack of interns, there's always one fool running around trying to show off and Alex, this time that fool is you. Get out" Miranda didn't look up at Alex, instead she looked at the wound on Vipers side.

After hours of surgery, Maggie went with Bailey to tell Vipers friend how he was doing. That was the last thing Maggie wanted.

"This lovely groups his friends" Bailey scoffed, walking closer to the people, "Uh, you all belong to- what's his name?" She turned and asked Maggie.

"Viper"

"V-viper" Bailey said less confidently.

"Yeah, we were in the race" Tommy said.

"How is he? Is he okay?" Lindy asked the doctors, her eyes would meet Maggie's.

"Are you kidding me? No. No, he is not okay at all. Viper literally hurled his body down a concrete mountain at full speed for absolutely no reason" Maggie yelled at the group.

"Be quite, Margaret" Tiller seethed.

"And I know you all pierce yourselves and smoke up and generally treat your bodies like your grungy asses can't break down and hey, that's fine. You want to kill yourselves flying down a concrete mountain got to it but there are other people walking, people driving, people trying to live their lives and one of them got his brains scrambled today because one of you little no good sniveling snot rag-"

"Bailey, okay, time to stop" Maggie interrupted when she saw that they were gathering stares.

"Yeah, so. Okay, no. Your friend, Viper, as far as I'm concerned, is not okay" Bailey pointed around Lindy before walking away, Maggie followed quickly behind.

"Holy balls, that was freaking awesome!" Maggie let out a laugh as soon as they reached a stopping point.

Bailey turned to look at Maggie, "Stop laughing"

Maggie grabbed her at stuff from her cubby and made her way out of the hospital, she walked past Vipers room just in case but when she saw all of his friends in the room, making him laugh, she realized that it wasn't her place anymore. She met his eye and watched him wave with a small smile, she did the same in return and then leaving Viper behind.

"What was up with you and Viper?" Alex asked her once she stepped outside.

"Freak. Were you waiting for me?" She jumped in surprise.

He simply shrugged in response.

"We dated for awhile" She told him and she doesn't even know why.

"You dated that guy?" Alex pointed his thumb back at the building.

"Shut up. I was in college, he was the first guy to give me attention and it wasn't bad attention, probably the best boyfriend I've ever had" She told him honestly.

"So he's a good lay" Alex nodded in realization.

"That helped. But really he's a good guy" Maggie laughed.

"I'm a good lay" Alex bragged. Maggie turned herself around and looked at him, her eyes twinkled in thought.

"Wanna go to Joes?" Maggie smirked, pointing to the bar just across the street.

"Hell yeah" Alex hyped, running to catch up with her.

Maggie wasn't sure what she was doing or how the night would end up but it couldn't hurt to have a little fun with someone especially Alex.
