Season Two, Episode Ten
Much Too Much
Maggie hated cuddling, she hated how she always woke up with a sore neck or sweating from the body heat but when Maggie woke up in Alex's arms, her head was resting on his chest and his arms wrapped around her tightly, she swore she could wake up like this forever.
Forever?
Maggie swiftly got off Alex like sh egot burned by hot water, "Mags? What are you doing?"
"Uh, you know? Getting ready for work?" It came out like a question which made what she was saying not sound believable.
"You're weird" Alex smiles and gets off the bed to stadn in front of her, "Let's take a shower" He kissed her forehead and guided her to her bathroom.
Maybe forever didnt sound half bad.
Maggie was on Derek's rounds today, which made her hate Dr. Bailey a little bit more.
"Is there meal service on this flight?"
"Robert Martin, 45, collapsed and hit his head causing a small subdues hemorrhage. He also presents with uncontrolled eye movement and delirium. His alcohol and tox screens were negative but his sodium levels are 112" Maggie shared with Derek who was writing notes in the charts.
"A little too low for my taste"
"Hey. Hey!" Robert yelled.
"Mr. Martin, how you doing in there?" Derek asked him through the microphone.
"I'm still waiting on that drink. Are you the stewardess"
"Actually, we're called flight attendants now" Maggie laughed, making Robert yell another hey.
"Oh, there it is, right there. On his pituitary, it's a rathke's cleft cyst"
"His hyponatrmic" Maggie said confidently, "Excessive thirst is a common side effect, so the waters what's been screwing up his sodium level"
"It's causing his delirium, so how do you treat hyponatremia?" Derek asks her.
"3% hypertonic saline solution I.V, 300 cc's over 3 hours"
"Great. Get him back to his room and call me when he stabilizes. Good job" Derek almost throws the chart at Maggie before walking out of the room.
"Does he get paid extra to be an asshole?" Maggie asked the MRI tech who just shrugged his shoulders.
Maggie sported a coffee as she sat down next to Meredith and Christina, "I had the most fun picking people up at the bar, I'm pretty sure me and my friends made a game out of it"
"But they always look so sad when I kick them out" Meredith added making Maggie laugh, "Seriously, why do guys not understand that when you pick them up in a bar and take them home for sex that there are no picket fences or kids in your future?"
Nobody said anything, instead Christina pulled a key out of her pocket, "Oh no"
"Burke keyed you?"
"I got freakin keyed before coffee"
"Alex doesn't have a house to give me a key, he just hasn't left my apartment for days" Maggie rolled her eyes.
"What is wrong with them" Meredith smirked.
"They're like these 1950s debutantes, one dance and there's a shotgun to your head. Minus Alex, he's a mooch" Christina scoffs.
"But I can have all the sex, anytime I want" Maggie raised her eyebrow with a smile.
"Meredith" A man walks up to her, "You work here?"
"What are you doing here, Steve?"
"I'm having a little problem"
"Steve, as in Steve?" Maggie asks.
"Actually I'm having a big problem" Steve confesses and moves his jacket away from his front.
"Oh wow, good for you Steve" Maggie's eye almost drop out of her head and now she can't stop staring at it and neither can Christina.
"Ever since you and I... it won't go away"
"Maggie! Christina!" Meredith yelled at them for staring.
"What? It's right there looking at me" Christina defends herself.
"Is it wrong to make a joke right now? Yeah probably... I'll just leave it" Maggie chuckles.
The three interns take Steve inside so that he wasn't traumatizing bystanders, "Do you think it's serious? It hurts like it's serious"
"You realize this is completely insane?" Christina tells Meredith, totally unbothered by the situation.
"Look, we have to stash him somewhere until we figure out what's wrong with him. I can't have the whole hospital finding out" Meredith looks at Christina as she drags Steve down the hallway.
"This is gonna be fun! A secret man whom has a broken penis because of Meredith" Maggie laughs again, it was quite humorous.
"Broke his what? Come-hey, hey don't make me chase you down, I'm growin a person here" Bailey finds them just in time, not for Meredith's sake but still Maggie would love to see how this plays out but unfortunately Miranda Bailey was one scary person and Maggie was suddenly not involved.
"I have a patient to see" Maggie looks at her friend with wide eyes before walking down the hall.
Maggie stood in Robert Martins room, looking over his chart and filling in any information needed.
"Have we heard from the seller's agent?" Robert asked his assistant.
"Ive been calling all morning"
"Ah, Mr. Martin. Its good to see you back on solid ground, Im Dr. Shepherd " Derek walks in and talks the chart from Maggi, almost pushing her out of the way.
"My assistant Doyle says I passed out and hit my head, this lady says it's some kind of cyst. I want you to say when i can get out of here" Robert gives Derek a bussiness type tone.
"A Rathke's cleft cyst" Maggie tells him again.
"Whatever"
"Its a-"
"It's a congenital tumor on your pituitary" Maggie interupts Derek with a smile.
"Thats treatable right?"
"Youre gonna need surgery. See, im going to use an endonasal approach" Derek explained.
"Endonasal?"
"Mm-mm" Derek hums a yes.
"You're gonna pull it out thtough my nose?"
"Mm-mm" Derek hums again.
"Look him up, check his credentials"
"It's a minimally invqasive procedure so there wont be any scaring" Derek lets him know the reason why they chose to do it that way.
"Good. So when?"
"Once we fully stabilize your sodium levels, which means no more water" Maggie lifts up the giant water bottle and shakes it.
"But im thirsty"
"Its a side effect of the tumor, we'll keep you hydrated intravensouly" Maggie informs the patient, closing his chart since there is no other questions.
"Right, okay" Derek walks out of the room with Maggie following behind him.
"I don't like to interrupted, Dr. Shepherd" Derek hastily tells her.
"That sucks, try not being an asshole" Maggie rolled her eyes as she scoffed.
"I'm still your superior, Margaret" Derek seethes.
"Then act like it, I don't appreciate charts being thrown at me or being pushed out of the way. Either you act accordingly or I'll go to someone much higher then you" Maggie snaps at him before turning and walking the other way.
Maggie turned the corner before she stopped to catch her breath, breathing in and letting a long breath out.
"Mags? Are you okay?" Alex grabs her shoulder and looks her in the eyes.
"Just trying to remember all the things I learned in anger management" Maggie laughed sympathetically.
"What happened?"
"Derek is just an asshole and sometimes I want to punch him but I can't because he could probably get me fired" Maggie sighed, leaning her head on Alex's shoulder, "Why am I still so angry"
"You were betrayed by someone that was supposed to love and protect you, there's almost nothing worse then that" Alex whispers softly in her ear.
"It's draining me to be angry, Alex. I need to let it go before I actually do something that'll get me fired"
"The hospital has therapist that you can see and talk too. Maybe you need to do that for a while so you can forgive Derek and forgive yourself too" Alex looked at her gently, he didn't know how she would react to being told that she needed help.
"I think I could use the help, there's nothing wrong with help. Right?" Maggie voiced sadly.
"No, there is nothing wrong with help Maggie"
Maggie nodded her head as she put space in between her and Alex, "Is it wrong to say that I don't know what I'd do without you?"
"There is nothing wrong with that either" Alex smiles, taking his hand to the nape of her neck and pulling her in for a kiss, "I don't know what I'd do without you either"
Maggie was on her third cup of coffee, maybe she was addicted but how could you not be in this line of work. So she sat, with her coffee on a bench, people watching.
"People are going to think you're a freak" George said from beside her.
"I don't care what people think"
"Okay, What's up with you?" George asks, sitting down next to her.
"Probably a lot of things but right now, nothing" Maggie shrugged.
George didn't say anything after that, he just sat quietly, waiting for Maggie to speak.
"I think I'm worried about where my life is heading and also, have you noticed the weird thing between Izzie and Alex?" Maggie finally spoke.
"Why are you worried? You're probably the smartest one in our intern class and don't worry Alex, Izzie just craves attention and he's kind of obsessed with you"
"I'm going to talk to someone about why I'm so angry, I think that'll help. I know I'm the smartest one in our intern class, George, that's not why I'm worried" Maggie groaned, it was hard to accept your faults.
"Then why are you worried?"
"I'm worried about everything, George. My anger, my future at this hospital, Alex. I mean, who basically falls in love with someone in such short time? It's our first intern year, who knows where Alex decides to go for his residency, will he even think of me before he decides?" Maggie was getting angry but not anyone other then herself, "And why the fuck do I care? I didn't want this George, I don't know if I want it"
"It's okay to fall in love with people, Maggie. It's okay to not know where your life is headed or hit a few bumps while you get there but it's not okay to throw away a good thing because you're scared. Don't push away this hospital, Alex and yourself because your plans got messed up. You make new plans and if those get messed up, you keep going"
Maggie looked at George, about to say something but her pager beeped. "I got to go but George, thank you, you're a really good best friend"
She ran inside and to Robert's room, "What Happened?" She asked Olivia.
"He locked himself in the bathroom, the water is off. We'll have to wait until he sobers up"
"His sodium levels will drop too low, I've got to get him out of there" Maggie banged on the door, "Okay, step back" She said to Olivia, looking at her until she was further back. "This better work"
Maggie lifts up her right leg and kicks the door as hard as she could, making sure that she went as close to the door knob as possible.
"Woah, how'd you do that?" Olivia asked.
"I took a required boxing class when I was in anger management" Maggie shrugged before asking into the bathroom and finding Robert with his face in the toilet.
Maggie moved to grab Robert, grinning his arm while Olivia did the same, "No! leave me alone! Let me go back! I need the water, I need it!"
"We're trying to help you hear so if you'd kindly stop resisting!" Maggie yelled.
"I don't want your help, I don't want people to look at me. I'm pathetic! Stop looking at me! Stop looking at me!" He yelled at Olivia is was not even looking at him.
"Stop yelling at my Nurse, she's not looking at you" Maggie rolled her eyes as she got the last restraint tied, "Give him a 3% hypertonic solution. 500 cc over four hours to stabilize him"
Maggie stood next to Meredith and Alex as she poured her fourth cup of coffee, "Actually a Norse Missionary named Leif Erickson is thought to have landed on Canadian shores 500 years before Christopher Columbus"
"How do you know that?" Meredith laughed.
"She doesn't like being lied too and also total history nerd" Alex informed Meredith, kind of joking about the nerd part.
"Hey, Addison wants me to put you guys on notice. When the quints are born, we're gonna need everyone available. There's gonna be five babies, at least three surgeries, we're gonna need all the hands we can get" Izzie comes up and grabs a tea packet.
"Okay"
"Fine"
"Whatever"
"So I'll just page you guys when we need you?" Izzie clarifies.
"Okay"
"Fine"
"Whatever"
The three of them walk to a table, leaving Izzie at the coffee bar, "I was studying, what's your excuse?"
"I was staring at the ceiling in abject horror. My one night stand is a neurosurgical case" Meredith tells Alex, still not believing how her day has been.
"I heard you broke his penis, nice" Alex laughs.
"So I'm having a lot of sex. What's wrong with that?" Meredith asks.
"Me too, so nothing wrong with that at all" Maggie quipped.
"It only gets problematic when you start to care, when you let your emotions get in the way, you know?"
Alex looked at Maggie, "Yeah, no, I don't get it"
"Of course you don't because you two are in love" Meredith jokes but both Maggie and Alex freeze.
"Oh, uh I-I gotta go" Maggie jumps up when her pager beeps. Making her way to her patients room again.
"What's up? Why's you page me?" Maggie asks Olivia.
"He was acting jittery and started slurring his words" Olivia informed her.
"Can you hear me?" Maggie asked him but he started seizing, "2 of Ativan. He started seizing" She stated when Derek walks into the room.
"How much sodium did you give him?" Derek asks, looking at the chart.
"500 cc over 4 hours" Maggie told him, making her voice loud and clear.
"Then why is he seizing?" Derek yells!
"I might have misunderstood, Dr. Shepherd. I thought she said 500 cc per hour over four hours" Olivia said, her voice shaking.
"Too fast. His brain is swelling. Why didn't you do a follow up? I give you one thing to do" Derek continues to yell at Maggie.
"Don't put this on me, Derek. He'll be okay, we just have to stabilize him" Maggie yelled back at him, moving as quickly as he is.
"If he's permanently impaired, I can't operate on him like this"
Once Derek gets the patient to stop seizing, he looks at Maggie and points to the hallway.
"What happened in there, Maggie?" Derek asks her, she could tell that he was trying not to yell.
"I'm sorry, you're right. I should've done a follow up, I just didn't expect Olivia to misunderstand like that. She's always been a good nurse" Maggie sighs, looking at Derek as he fumed above her.
"Don't blame this on Olivia. You're the Doctor, Maggie, he is your responsibility, you are the one who has to make sure everything goes smoothly. You check and double check, hell even triple check"
"Okay, I will" Maggie nods and leaves it at that. She goes to walk away but Derek stops her.
"I'm surprised you aren't blowing me head off" Derek gives a humorless laugh.
"I'm tired of being angry, nothing is worth my energy like that. Especially you" Maggie finally leaves when he nods his head at her.
Maggie goes to one of the on-call rooms, she could use a small break to herself but a small break turned into a big one and she was being paged for the quints.
"Oh goody" Maggie groaned before making her way to Peds wing.
Okie, hello. It's me.
Hope you guys enjoy!
