Season One, Episode Four
No Mans Land

Things did not progress that night with Alex, they went out for a couple, played darts and made fun of other clueless interns, that was it and Maggie hated to admit that she had a lot of fun. The look she got from Pat when she got home, was not fun, it was the look best friends get when they realize something you don't and Maggie was not falling for it. Pat was still gloating about foreseeing the relationship.

Maggie walked out of her room fully dressed for the day, she needed to restock her locker with some necessities so she stuffed her bag with what she needed.

"We need more cereal" Pat said once she saw Maggie and then lifting up the the empty box and through it in the trash.

"I'll pick some up on the way home if it's not too late, do we need anything else?" Maggie asked, walking over to the cabinet and getting something else for breakfast.

"Other then you finally banging, Alex?" Pat shrugged, "Nope, can't think of anything"

Maggie let out a sigh, "You've never even met the guy, Pat. He's a total asshole"

"You punch assholes in your sleep, Mags" Pat pointed out, "Plus, you have a type"

"I do not have a type!" Maggie gasped.

"Benji, Kyle, Chandler, Damien... do I need to go on?" Pat listed on her fingers.

"None of them count, I just had sex with them, not a full blown relationship" Maggie protested, she didn't have time for one of Pats talks, she had to get to the hospital for her shift.

"Look, Pat, I love you and you're always right which makes me kind of annoyed but let this thing run it's course" She lifted up and kissed Pats cheek before walking over and grabbing her stuff, "Plus, I've never met a man that stayed so I'm not even going to bother"

Maggie stood next to George in the locker room, Bailey had decided to go on a monologue so the morning was not going well.

"You are the first person they see in the morning, you say please, you say thank you. You apologized or waking them up, you make them feel good about you" Bailey started walking around the room, "Why is the important? Cause then they'll talk to you and tell you what's wrong, why is that important? Because then you can tell you attending what they need to know during rounds and why is that important? Because if you make your resident look bad, she'll torture you until you beg for your mama" She stopped in front of Maggie, "Now get out there. I want pre-rounds done by 5:30 a.m"

After Bailey left the interns went back to their conversations, Maggie looked at George and smiled, "I heard about this morning, Georgie"

"What? You told her?" George accused Meredith.

"Hey, don't yell at her because your no good around women" Maggie stepped in, "What are you going to do if you get married or have a daughter?"

"You're crazy, Maggie. I'm out of here" George slammed his locker shut, making Maggie laugh at his over exaggeration.

"I'd better get good patients today, yesterday I have two guys with colostomies who needed dressing changed every 15 minutes" Meredith spoke to the two women.

"I've been in the E.R for the busy days and I liken it" Maggie rubbed her hands together.

"Well I'm gonna be in surgery, today's my day" Christina told the two.

"On what?" Meredith asked, turning around to face her.

"What do you know, Yang?" Maggie added.

"Like I would tell you, guys" Christina smirked.

"What do you know?"

"I know that I was here at 4:00 and you weren't here until 4:25" Christina pointed at Maggie, "And you weren't here until 4:30"

"Tell us" Maggie almost begged.

"No" Christina said simply, getting off the locker and walking around Meredith, "I'm not the intern screwing an attending"

"Hey, neither am I!" Maggie followed after with Meredith.

"I am not screw-" Meredith began but stopped when she saw Derek.

"Oh, gross" Maggie gagged, pulling Izzie out of the room too so that they could get there stuff done.

Maggie and Izzie walked into a dark room, closing the door behind them, "Mr. Humphrey" Izzie called out.

"Mr. Humphrey, I'm sorry to wake you" Maggie walked toward the light switch and turned it on.

"Come on" The man groaned, "What time is it?"

"10 after 5:00" Izzie told him, "I'm sorry. I just need to do a brief exam, if you could sit up for one moment" The two watched the man sit up,Aggie grabbed her stethoscope and put one end on his back.

"Thanks" Maggie smiled, "This might be a tiny bit cold, if you can take a deep breath" The man looked at her and then to Izzie, "Take a deep breath, Mr. Humphrey"

"She's not a doctor" He looked at Izzie, jumping away from Maggie in the process.

"I'm Dr. Stevens but you can call me Izzie. I'll be helping Dr. Bailey with your biopsy this morning" Izzie moved closer to the guy but it jumped back again.

"No, I don't think so, no"

"Mr. Humphrey, this will just take a moment of your time" Maggie tried.

"No, get me Dr. Bailey or Dr. Victor" He leaned over and grabbed the magazine he had on the counter.

"We just need to do a brief-"

"You don't need to do anything" He glared, "Is this you?" He opened up the page to Izzie's model photo, "Huh? Is this you?" He watched Izzie's face fall, "It is, isn't it?"

"Sir-"

"You know, get out of my room" Mr. Humphrey looked at Izzie.

Izzie walked out of the room with Maggie following after, "Seriously, what the hell"

"I know, I'm sorry" Izzie apologizes.

"Why are you apologizing? You did what you had to do to pay for college, it's this jackass who doesn't understand that people can be more then one thing"
Maggie started pacing the hall, putting her arms to her head to control her breathing.

Izzie stared at Maggie like she said something wrong, "What?" Maggie sighed.

"Nothing. Nothing, it's just people don't usually understand" Izzie told her.

"I'm not like most people, Iz" Maggie said softly, "Putting people like him in his place is kind of a hobby for me" She gave Izzie a pat on her back and walked off as her pager went off, running toward the call.

Maggie opened the trauma room door and saw Alex standing by it, giving him a tight lipped smile, she stood next to him. She looked at the patient in front of her and her immediately went to his head, multiple nails were sticking out.

"I can't see my hands"

"Oh, my god. He's conscious" George pointed out.

"Breathe in and out, Georgie. You won't pass out" Maggie told him, giving him a thumbs up in encouragement.

"Use 4 milligrams of morphine. Titrations up to 10" Derek moved his chair to get a better look, "You know what, I don't want him to move"

"I can't see"

"It's okay. We need you to be very still, Mr..." Meredith comforted.

"Cruz- Jorge Cruz. He tripped and fell down a flight of stairs holding a nail gun"

"Did he miss a blood vessel?" Maggie asked when she noticed the lack of blood.

"Yeah, that's a minor miracle" Derek looked up at her and then back to the patient, "Optic Nerves been affected. Can you feel this?" Derek asked Jorge as he touched his side. "Numbness on the right side, what's our immediate concern"

"Infection"

"Right. I'm gonna be pulling these nails out in the next half-hour. I need a C.T" Derek looked at the nurse.

"C.T.s are down"

"What!" Derek looked back at the nurse.

"They exchanges them out last night, computers crashed- have them back at 1:00"

"Typical. What are the options" Derek asked his interns.

"An M.R.I" George called out.

"You cant put a man with nails in his head in a giant machine that's basically a magnet" Maggie told George, "You'll want films from three axis points and a c-arm in surgery"

"Good, you guys dig up research and find out if this has ever happened before. Go" Derek dismissed the interns.

Maggie walked out with Alex and George right behind them, "Why are you the first person to always know the answer?" George asked.

"I listened it school, Georgie and I read Medical books on my free time to keep my memory good" Maggie shrugged, she never saw the problem in being first.

"Over achiever" Alex coughed.

"Shut up, Karev. It's not my fault that I actually care about my job and patients, maybe you could learn something" Maggie rolled her eyes at Alex's comment.

They turned Into the research room and sat at on the chairs, "You guys look online, I'll check the books. I process better if it's on paper" Maggie told the two men.

"You got it" George complied, receiving a groan from Alex.

"Look what I found" George said ten minutes later, "23 people have been accidentally shot in the head with nails 23 times"

"One was attempted suicide- doesn't count" Alex said back.

"Oh, so he pointed a nail gun at his head on purpose? That makes me feel better"

"So, uh.. Grey and Stevens really walk around in their underwear?" Alex asked, making Maggie turn her head slowly.

"Not all the time" George replied back slowly, "I mean, some of the time, you know but not all the time"

"Sexy underwear?" This time Maggie threw a book at Alex's head, "Hey!"

"Women can do whatever they want in the comfort of their own home, they shouldn't have to worry about a horn dog talking about it" Maggie snide, "And I thought better if you George"

"Just tell me O'Malley"

"Yeah. I mean..." George stuttered.

"And they just, Uh, let you look at them?" Alex pressed.

"You guys are unbelievable" Maggie groaned.

"Well, Uh.... yeah" George ignored her.

"Like sisters?"

"No, well, not like sisters. I don't think of them as sisters" George chuckled nervously.

"But they're not coming on to you" Alex continued.

"Not exactly"

"They don't expect you to do anything"

"No. But..." George said, failing to come up with something.

"Like sisters. Just like sisters"

"Seriously Alex, fucking knock it off. I don't see anyone coming on to you either" Maggie backed George up.

"Shut up Margaret. I don't have to take this from you. I don't see you having a line of guys waiting for you" Alex looked at Maggie when she didn't say anything, "You wanna know why? Because you're damaged goods, everyone around you leaves, especially men"

Maggie let out a laugh, "Do you think that hurts coming from you? You're a waste of potential, you don't know me and you never will" She got up from her chair, "Your insult holds nothing over me, I might be damaged but you don't have hospitals already putting in offers for you to come work with them when your resident year is over. I'm great, I'm brilliant and you are nothing" With that, Maggie left the room. She needed space and if Alex wanted to live another day, he would leave her alone.

Maggie came back to the research room two hours later, the two men were in the same spots as before and none of them made an effort to apologize.

"Derek is about to go into surgery, we need to call him and tell him what we found" Maggie monotonously said.

Maggie picked up the phone first, Alex and George followed after, she had found out what O.R. they were in a punched in the few numbers.

"Shepherd" Maggie heard on the other line.

"There have been 23 cases of people getting nailed in the head" Maggie said immediately.

"23 cases?"

"One was attempted suicide" Alex added.

"But it doesn't count" Maggie told him after.

"No it doesn't. Talk to me about procedure"

"Biggest problems were bleeding and infection but the odds improved the shorter surgery times" George response.

"Basically you have to get the nails out quickly and watch for bleeding as you do" Maggie explained.

"In other words, I'm on my own"

Maggie hung up her phone when she heard the dial tones, "Douche" Maggie rolled her eyes and headed to the gallery to watch the surgery.

She took the first seat open, George sat next to her a moment after. They looked down at the Chief looking up at the gallery filled with people.

"As you can see, the patient has shot seven nails directly into the skull without doing significant damage other than the optic nerve and we may be able to save that, the idea is remove the nails at exactly the angle they entered, any wiggle and we risk doing more damage than when they went it" The Chief explained they procedure.

"Where are they?" Christina asked, "Move over"

"They're pulling out the nails now" Maggie told her, getting up from her chair and moving further down.

"Hey, I heard you got a whipple" George said when Christina sat down.

"A maybe Whipple. Collazo is fun in my butt off, not to mention Burke's state waiting for me to do something wrong" Christina told them, "Oh, man. Look at those films!"

"Muwahahah" Alex said, leaning in between George and Christina, "It's hell-raiser" Christina pulled Alex back into his seat, making Maggie smirk when she heard the thud.

They watched Derek pull out another nail, "There goes the third grade" Christina commented.

"Dr. Yang. Did you put in the blood work?" Burke looked at the intern and asked.

"Oh, right before I got here" Christina said hesitantly.

"Hmm. Take her to radiology for the M.R.I. beep me when you're done" Burke watched Christina sigh, "You want the whipple, right?"

She nodded her head softly, "Yeah"

Maggie watched as she left, with Izzie replacing her.

"Here. My share of the grocery money" Izzie handed George the money, "When are you going?"

"Tonight" He let out.

"Okay, seriously George. Please don't-"

"Yeah, could we not talk about it here?" George interrupted.

"Why are men so afraid of Tampons?" Maggie rhetorically asked making all the males in the room stop and receiving a pat on the back from Izzie.

"Did none of you hear a word I said?" George asked, he was definitely embarrassed.

"Oh we heard you, it doesn't necessarily mean that we listen to you" Maggie smirked.

"Yeah, we get it, you're a man" Izzie added.

"Talk about shrinking the salamander" Alex leaned next to George and said. Neither George or Maggie wanted Alex's hot breathe on their necks so they got up at the same time and headed out of them room.

Maggie unlocked her apartment door and was immediately hit with the sound of laughter, setting her keys in the bowl by the door, she took off her shoes and headed to the living room.

"What are you guys watching?" Maggie asked her group of friends that were sitting around the coffee table eating Chinese.

"Nothing really, we were waiting till you got home so we could watch the new episode of Law & Order" Pat told her, watching as the doctor headed to her room to change.

"That was tonight? Sorry my days feel like there all mashed together" Maggie walked back into the room, now changed into her pajamas.

"It's fine, we recorded it on DVR" Finley waved her off, taking the last carton of food and handing it too Maggie.

"Cool, how was work today?" Maggie looked around.

"Same as usual, busting my ass to get higher in the firm, only for white men to get the promotion I deserve" Finley shrugged. She was right, Finley ranked higher then anyone on the LSAT and has years of winning cases to show for it.

"They'll get what's coming to them, just keep working hard and you'll get there" Kelly gave her an empathetic smile, "Well my day was boring, I don't even know why I decided to coming a professor"

"Don't act like you hate your job" Fin rolled her eyes.

"It's in my right to complain" Kelly snapped back.

"Anyway, Pat, what about you?" Maggie interrupted the two.

"Same work, different body" Pat shrugged. If you looked at the 5'10 girl, you wouldn't believe what she did for her profession.

"How in the world do you stomach looking at dead people?" Kelly gagged.

"Just like how Maggie is okay cutting into people and looking at their insides" Pat replied back.

"Maggie's different, shes well- shes Maggie" Fin argued back.

They all stayed quite after that, no one was going to argue about how weird Maggie was but you also had to be weird to stare at a dead body all day.

"What about you, Mags. Was your day shit?" Pat asked.

"Guy came in with nine nails in his head and somehow he's still breathing so I won't complain" Maggie shrugged, "I will complain about that asshat Alex Karev though, you should've heard the things he said"

"Young interns" Pat sighed, "Always thinking that you have to be a dick to climb the working ladder"

"I know we didn't get to the show but I've got a work load tomorrow, if I don't find some solid evidence on this case that I have then I'm going to lose and well, I can't have that" Finley stood up from the floor while the rest of the group boos at her.

"I get it, I have another early day tomorrow" Maggie agreed, taking the empty containers so she could throw them away.

Pat and Kelly decided that they were gonna hang just a little bit longer, probably watch a movie but Maggie didn't complain, her room was on the other side of the apartment so there usual loud talking was never a problem. She just hoped that Alex Karev wasn't going to be.

She walked Into the hospital alone the next day, she must've missed Meredith and Christina but she was fine with being alone.

The elevator ride to the intern locker room wasn't a long one, she's already gotten used to it. Stepping off, she paused momentarily after hearing screaming coming from the locker room. Opening the door to walk in she saw Izzie's model pictures plastered all over the room.

"Oh, boy, I guess they do airbrush out the tattoo don't they?" She heard Alex say, walking toward the two people to fully look at them.

"You wanna see it? You really want to see it?" Izzie asked, beginning to take off her clothes, "Fine. Let's look at the tattoo up close and personal, shall we? And what are these? Oh, my god! Breasts! How does anybody practice medicine hauling these things around? And what do we got back here? Let's see if I remember my anatomy" She took off her pants, leaving her in just her bra and underwear, "Glutes, right? Let's study them, shall we? Gather around and check out my booty that out Izzy Stevens through med school. Have you had enough or should I continue because I have a few more interesting tattoos"

Everyone watched as Izzie walked closer to Alex, "You want to call me Dr. Model? That's fine, just remember that while you're sitting on 200 grand of student loans- I'm out of debt" Izzie pushed Alex and grabbed her clothes.

"I'll take them down" George told her as she walked away.

"Don't bother" Izzie rushed out, taking her last piece of clothing and walking out of the room.

Maggie looked at Alex with a glare, where did he get off being such a piece of shit? She felt a hand grab her forearm to pull her back from walking any closer to Alex, "Let me go Georgie" She told him, her voice was dangerously low.

"Where the fuck do you think you have the right?" Maggie stood in front of Alex, her chest was pressed out and there noses were practically touching.

"I'm confused at how you thought any of this concerns you" Alex smirked back, he really liked putting on a show for his intern friends.

"It became my problem when I stepped into the room" Maggie seethed, "I don't know where you came from or how they did it in your hometown but where I'm from this is called harassment and Izzie could have your ass if she wanted too"

"Im from Iowa, you bitch-"

Maggie's fist collided with Alex's face, She wasn't going to let him disrespect her or any other women that stepped foot in this locker room. She tried to land another blow but she felt herself get carried back, "Let go of me!" She fought back, when she was finally put down she met George's eyes.

"You can't hit him, you could get fired" George blocked her from moving.

"My best friends a lawyer, I'm fine and Trust me Georgie, Alex is way to proud to go to the Chief" Maggie laughed, she noticed George's eyes still staring at her so she let out a sigh, "I won't hit him again, I just want to talk. Promise"

The moment George moved she went over to Alex, bending down to meet his body laying on the floor, "If I catch you doing this to someone else again, I'm not afraid to go a few rounds with you" She stood back up on her feet, "How are you gonna play off your black eye?" She laughed at the shiner she gave him and walked away, grabbing a pair of scrubs and walking out of the room.

Maggie was on ER duty or well Dr. Nedler was and Maggie was her intern. The two doctors stood by the nurses station, they were finishing up paperwork on the other patients, "Patient in 03 needs stitches, he's all yours"

"Awesome" Maggie gave her a thumbs up and walked toward the patient, "I'm Dr. Shepherd, I'm going to be stitching you up today"

The man looked at Maggie, his cheek had a big gash in it, "I'm perfectly fine, I don't need stitches"

"I'm good with my hands, Mr. Flint. Trust me" Maggie joked, grabbing the suture kit and pulling the chair under her so she could sit, "I'm just going to give you a little something to numb up the area so you won't feel anything"

Putting on her gloves, she looked closely at the wound to see how many stitches he might need, "How did this happen? You'll only need 4 stitches so it'll go by quick"

"We're moving so there's boxes everywhere, I trip on one of em and hit my face right on the coffee table" He explained.

"Okay, Mr. Flint, I'm going to begin the suturing, try your best not to move, okay?" Maggie gave him a small smile and inserted the needle on one side of the skin and made her way to the other side.

"See, wasn't so bad right?" She asked him once she was finished, grabbing the bandage from her side cart and gently placing it over the wound.

"It wasn't fun though" Mr. Flint joked.

"No it isn't" Maggie agreed, "You're going to need to keep the bandage on for 24 hours, after that you can remove it and gently clean around it. I wouldn't recommend scrubbing or soaking the stitches"

"How long until I can come back to get them removed?" Mr. Flint asked.

"I'd say 6 days, we can set up the appointment now or you can wait" Maggie stood up from her chair and grabbed the chart, "If you feel any pain, taking ibuprofen should help" Maggie sainted until he nodded his head, "Perfect, I'll get the discharge papers and you should be good to go"

She opened the curtain and walked back to the nurses station, "Your sutures are perfect, thinking about going into plastics?" Dr. Nedler asked.

"Maybe, I was thinking about choosing Trauma to be my specialty" Maggie admitted.

"I wouldn't expect anything less, you and Trauma definitely go hand in hand" Dr. Nedler told her. Maggie gave her a genuine smile, before walking back to Mr. Flint.

"Okay, Mr. Flint. Just sign these papers and you'll be own your way" Maggie told him, handing him the papers and a pen, which he gladly took.

"No offense, Dr. Shepherd but I really hope to never see your face again" Mr. Flint laughed.

"Non taken" She waved off, backing out of the small area.

She gave Dr. Nedler a heads up, telling her that she was taking a food break. One of the best parts of being on Dr. Nedlers service was how laid back she was, after getting an Okay from her she headed out of the ER and too the cafeteria.

Maggie carried her tray to where Izzie told her she would be, giving everyone a wave, she sat down on the bench next to Christina.

"The women's life was this hospital, it was her home. It's a sweet thing for them to do" Izzie told Christina.

"What are you guys talking about" Maggie asked.

"Christina has a patient that wants to die here" Izzie explained.

"It's a waste of a bed and it's a waste of my time" Christine argued.

"Who are we talking about" Meredith walked in between the girls.

"Miss. Fallon, they brought her here to die" Christina mumbled.

"Wouldn't you want them to do the same thing for you?" Izzie asked.

"Absolutely not. I don't want to die here, take me to the forest and let me take in nature" Maggie hummed, she had it all planned out, she had told Pat, Kelly and Finley what she wanted to happen so that they knew what not to do.

"I'd want the doctors to do everything they could, I want them to cut me open until the minute I die" Christina stated.

"Sometimes do I f everything can be worse than doing nothing" Meredith chimed in.

"Exactly, I don't want to be poked and prodded on my last days. They can do that to my organs after I die" Maggie agreed.

"You are 8 feet tall, your boobs are perfect, your hair is down to there. If I were you, I would walk around naked all the time. I wouldn't- I wouldn't have a job, I wouldn't have skills, I wouldn't even know how to read. I'd just be...naked" Christina looked at the magazine that held Izzie's model pictures, handing the thing to Meredith so she could look.

"It's makeup, it's retouching"

"You're hot Iz, with or without retouching" Maggie complimented.

"You get that we hate you, right?" Christina said as Izzie's pager went off.

"Bailey again"

"Any patient who looks at their doctors pictures to jack off, don't have any rights on what doctors they have" Maggie told her.

"You're seriously not gonna give up the prostatectomy, are you?" Christina asked, "Izzie?"

"Come on, Izzie! I can't even fathom the logic" Maggie groaned.

"It's painful to be around you" Christina agreed. Izzie gave them a smile before walking away, making Maggie stare after her.

"I heard you punched, Karev" Christina said from beside her.

"You did what?" Meredith called out.

Maggie simply shrugged, "You should've seen how smug he was when Izzie saw those pictures hanging in the locker room"

"You're like rocky. Can you be our personal body guard? " Christina joked.

"I can't just throw around punches willy nilly" Maggie rolled her eyes at Christina's request.

"But you'll punch Alex for Izzie?" Meredith asked.

"Okay, fine. If you really need me to rough someone up, call me but stretch it out cause if I break these hands, I'm going to be pissed" Maggie sighed, "I've got to go back to the ER"

Maggie was only half joking about being their body guard, she knew that if it came down to it and someone was a jackass to her friends, she would definitely be the one the throw the first punch.
