Season Two, Episode Six
Into you like a train
The group of friends haven't left there spot at the bar, they were talking, drinking and turning their heads every time the bell chimed at the door.
"I actually said 'pick me' right? I did? 'pick me'?" Meredith turned back to Joe.
"I think it's romantic" Joe smiled back her, making Maggie scoff.
"It's anything but romantic, Joe. It makes her seem desperate" Maggie rolled her eyes when she felt two elbows jab into her side.
"See! It's horrifying. Horror movie horrifying, Carrie at the prom with pigs blood horrifying" Meredith said somewhat agreeing with Maggie.
"Okay, fine, it's horrifying but Carrie took out an entire senior class as revenge. I gotta say, I like that in a girl" Joe told her, trying to see the silver living in it all.
"I said 'pick me" Meredith shouted again at Joe.
"When you tell someone I'll meet you later at a bar tonight, how long exactly does that mean you're supposed to wait?" Christina said from by the dart board.
"Do you really think he's not coming?" Pat asked, who was standing next to George as they played darts.
"Of course he's not coming!" Finley whisper yells.
"It is getting a little hard to watch" Izzie says, looking over at Meredith.
"It was hard to watch an hour ago. Now it's just pathetic" Christina tells them.
"Whose pathetic?" Meredith turns her attention to the group previously talking shit about her.
"What?"
"You who pretend to be my friends are calling me pathetic being my back in front of my face. Why don't you just dump the pigs blood on me now and get it over with" Meredith rants.
"I kind of wish we had some blood, it would be cool to just dump it on her" Maggie shrugs, imagining the scenario. The brunette squints her eyes at Kelly when she feels his elbow stab her in the side again, "Oh, hey Tyler!"
"He's really not coming" Meredith tells herself sadly.
Just when Meredith finally comes to terms with the situation, their pagers start to beep. Each of them reaching into their bags and pulling their pager out.
"Hey, Joe turn on the tv!"
Maggie holds her pager in one hand and her bag in the other, stopping to watch the News women announce that there was a train wreck.
"911?"
"We just worked a 30-hour shift"
"Oh come on guys, it's a train wreck! This is gonna be fun" Maggie smiles, turning over to her friends, "I'll talk to you guys later, make sure you don't drink too much and I'm not kidding when I say to ask Joe to drive you guys home if you need it"
Her friends mumble different responses but all of them ended in 'I love you', Maggie grabbed George by the hand, knowing that if they got there faster, they would get the best patient.
The six interns stand in the moving elevator to get to where they need to be, Izzie was giving Alex weird glances making Maggie look at both of them with squinted eyes. Once the elevator stops, they each get off with Meredith struggling in the back.
"I think I saw a pneumothorax. I hope I get a pneumothorax" Christina tells the group. George hands Maggie two yellow coverings and she passes one of them down to Alex.
"Green suits you" Alex says, pointing to her under shirt, "And your bangs look nice"
Maggie touched her bangs subconsciously, she had only recently gotten them trimmed, "You're cute when you try to get into my pants. Keep it up Karev"
Alex just gives her a seductive wink, putting his hands on her hips to turn her around so he could tie the fabric together.
"I wasn't saying that to get into your pants but if it helps" Alex's hot breathe fanned Maggie's ear making her shudder, "Besides, the sex is great, I don't need to butter you up in order for you to go down on me"
"Seem so sure of yourself" Maggie told him, turning around to face his front.
"Well, your screams kind of solidify everything" Alex whispered in a low husky voice.
"You two, stop getting all horny in the middle of the hospital" Christina shouts at them.
Maggie smiled at Alex, "Let's hope we aren't too tired at the end of this all"
Bailey walks into the crowd room of interns wearing a pretty formal dress, "What are you looking at?"
"Nothing"
"Oh, nothing"
"Hey, you. Go get me my damn shoes" Bailey walks up to Alex and gives him her purse as Maggie pressed her hand to her mouth to hold in her laugh, "Let's move people"
The rest of the group follow Miranda, "I seem to be a little bit drunk, I was off duty"
"So was I. Anybody else half in the bottle?"
"No" Everyone chimes back.
"Grey, just stay out of the way, I'll deal with you later. The rest of you stick with me and wait for your assignments. I know you get all a-quiver at the sight of blood and organs, but its gonna be a long night and you're already tired. I don't want any mistakes. Come on now!" Bailey opens the door to the E.R, revealing the after math of the train wreck. Maggie looked at George with a smile which he returned with furrowed eyebrows.
"Im so not tired anymore" Christina tells the group as she buts on her gloves.
"Definitely not, this is gonna be fun" Maggie smirks as she looks around, nodding her head at Bailey when she turns around to glare at the intern.
"We got a third-trimester burn victim here. Dr. Bailey, I'm going to need some help" Dr. Montgomery tells her, making all of the interns shoot their hands up.
"Uh, Izzie, go"
"Yes! Have a nice nap" Izzie gloats as she walks towards the doctor.
"I don't think I like her" Maggie whispers too Christina.
As they wait for Bailey to give them positions, they start to talk amongst themselves only to turn around to find Derek. They watch Derek stares at Meredith, turning their attention back to Meredith, only ti find that she's doing the same.
"Does that mean he picked her?" George leans into Maggie and Christina.
"If it does, I just lost 50 bucks"
"He picked Addison, he's too proud to not try and fix things with her" Maggie shrugged over to the Neo-Natal surgeon.
"Got the leg!" A paramedic yelled as he ran into he E.R with a single leg.
"I want that leg" Christina practically drools.
"He lost a lot of blood at the scene, pressure dressings applied, two large bore IVs started" The cute paramedic says to the chief.
"Anything for the pain?"
"Base ordered morphine, 5 miss given so far"
"Dr. Bailey who you got?" The chief asks her. All three of the interns shoot their hands in the air, almost hitting Bailey in the head.
"Christina, go"
"Its okay, Georgie. They are just starting to pull victims from the train, so we'll get the best of them" Maggie smiled at George when she noticed his face fall.
The two last interns walk closer to Meredith when they notice Derek about to walk near, as he passes them, he gives Meredith a nod. "Was that a nod?"
"Yes"
"Do we know what it meant?"
"No"
George turns around again to see the fast pace movement from everyone, "Am invisible?" He walks away from them to try and find something to do.
Maggie watched as the patients and doctors rushed to get somewhere, she need something to do but she could feel that there was something coming for her.
And she was right, Dr. Kepner, the new head of trauma walked into the E.R, pushing two people on the gurney with a metal rod going through both of the bodies.
"Bailey, I'm taking Shepherd and anyone else you've got" The red head pointed at Maggie and told her to follow.
"Is this the craziest thing you've ever seen?" One of the patients asks Meredith as she drunkingly inspects the rod.
"Uh, yeah" Merediths admits.
"Yeah. Me too"
Maggie looks over at Meredith and gives her a glare, silently telling her to back off, which she does without another word.
"Excuse me!"
"Hi, Im Dr. Kepner. You shouldn't turn your head or body for that matter, just try to move as little as possible" Kepner looks at both of them with kind eyes and she knew it was a very intense situation so she wasn't going to sugarcoat anything.
"Oh, okay. So are you gonna pull this pole out of us anytime soon?"
"Its a touch uncomfortable" The second patient tells them.
"Im sorry, but we can't do anything until we get a better look at what is going in internally but I swear to you, we will work as quickly as possible" Dr. Kepner tells them, trying to remain as honest as possible but still trying to remain calm as well.
"Well, in that case, does anybody have a breath mint?" She jokes, making everyone pause, "For me, not for you"
"Uh, O'Malley get them to x-ray, move them extremely carefully" Bailey tells him as Kepner nods beside her.
"This never would've happened before the elevator" George whispers to Maggie as she unties him.
"You go, Georgie" Maggie smiles at him and jabbing Alex in the stomach when's he feels him roll his eyes.
Bailey motions for Meredith, Alex and Maggie to follow her outside of the hall, "Maggie, Kepner wants you on the case so you stay in there. Alex, cover the E.R. you can do sutures, while you get over your newfound fear of scalpels"
"That was mean even for you" Meredith tells Bailey, making Maggie turn around and walk right back into the room.
Maggie stands next to Kepner as she assess the situation before George moves them, "Wow, August looks like you got into a little accident yourself" Maggie moves her hand to point at the big purple bruise around Kepners wrist.
"You know me, Mags, always the clumsy one" August laughed it off and moved to the other side.
"Okay, I don't know the full situation we are in right now but I intend on moving fast as I figure it all out. Shepherd, you and O'Malley take these two to the get an X-ray, if anything happens, its your call" August said to the staff as quietly as she could.
George and Maggie start pushing the gurney out into he hallway, moving as fast as they could without moving the two patients.
"Well, um, is there anyone you'd like me to call?" George asks, probably trying to make small talk to keep them calm.
"No, they called my wife from the ambulance" Tom tells George.
"And my fiancé. They're flying from Vancouver together"
"Normally Amanda would be a tad upset to find me pressed up against another women, but in this case, I think I'll get a pass" Tom jokes.
"You two weren't traveling together?" George asks.
"No, we just met" Bonnie tells him seriously
"Well, what an introduction" Maggie jokes.
"Id say, its the most awkward one I've ever had"
"You have very nice pores" Bonnie looks up at Tom, making him laugh.
"Oh, it hurts to laugh" Tom said wincing from the pain.
As they turn the corner, they see a long line for the X-ray room, the intern in front of them turns around and sees Tom and Bonnie, letting them go ahead. Maggie coughs a little to get the attention of the intern first in line, making her turn her head and then agreeing to they could go first.
"You're so kind, thank you" Maggie fake smiles, pushing the gurney into the room
"Is it going straight through her spine?" George asks, looking closer at the x-ray.
"It looks like T8 is completely crushed" Maggie says, following George and leaning forward.
They all turn around when the door opens, revealing Derek, "What happened?" He asks, looking at Meredith.
"Uh, tequila"
"Im keeping an eye on her" Bailey responds.
"Look at this" Derek says not giving Meredith another look, "These people are still alive?"
"They're still making small talk" George tells him.
"The polls tamponading the wound as far as we can see" Bailey informs him.
"Its hitting the aorta" Derek tells them, pointing at it not he x-ray.
"Well, look at him, Its right in the line with his inferior vena cava" Maggie shakes her had at the predicament Tom and Bonnie are in.
"Is there any way to operate without separating them?" George asks, receiving a series on No's.
"If we remove the pole then..."
"They'll both bleed out"
Maggie looks at the x-ray more intently, "Hey, Dr. Kepner, what if we don't remove the pole, maybe if we move one of the patients off of the pole, we will be able to get the saw in there, that way we can hold the pole steady for the other one"
"We could hold it carefully and remove the damages as we take it out" August finishes for her.
"Who? which would you move?" George asks the two of them.
"With her aortic injuries, her chances of survival are very slim, no matter what we do" August tell him, "But if we move her, we have a real shot at saving him"
"Well, I could argue since her injuries are more extensive, we should move him. Give her the best shot we can" Derek chimes in, opposing the opposite.
"So basically, whoever you move doesn't stand a chance?" Meredith asks the group, but nobody answers, "So how do you choose? How do you decide who gets to live?"
Maggie knocked on the door before walking into the patients room, Derek was currently in the room to see what they both can and cannot do.
"I got the labs" Maggie said holding up the folder and then handing it to him.
"Oh, great. Thank you" Derek says, earning a simple nod from Maggie, "Hold that"?
"Could you try to wiggle your toes, Mr. Maynard?" Derek asks him.
Both Maggie and Derek watch as his toes wiggle, "Are they moving?"
"Yes, they are" Derek tell him happily.
"Good. Thats good, right?" Tom asks with a laugh.
"Its very good, Mr. Maynard" Maggie laughs with him.
"What about me? Are mine moving?" Bonnie asks the doctors.
They both look down to see that Bonnies toes are not moving, "Yes, they are"
"Yay me!" Bonnie says tiredly.
"Dr. Shepherd, it it?" Tom asks him.
"Yes, it is" Derek responds, moving around the gurney to get to the other side.
"Dr. Shepherd, Bonnie and I... Are we gonna live through this?" Tom asks Derek, making Maggie look down.
"Now that's just morose, Tom" Bonnie tells him with a chuckle.
"Im sorry, dear. Doctor?"
"We're going to do everything we can, Mr. Maynard" Derek tells them with a soft voice, but by the looks of Tom face, he didn't believe that they would make it.
Maggie stood next to Derek and George as they looked at the X-rays again, "Where are we?" August asks, walking into he room with Bailey.
"You were right, her vitals are erratic, pulse is weak, spine is severed. I was hoping that it didn't hit the- but from that angle, it can't have missed the aorta" Derek informs the two.
"What about him? Think he can live" Bailey asks.
"He's got a better chance" Maggie weakly told her.
"All right, let O.R. one know we're coming" Bailey told George.
"And, O'Malley? Close off the gallery, we don't need an audience for this" August stops George in his tacks to tell him.
"She's cracking jokes. How do you tell ones she's gonna be dead in a few minutes when she's sitting up cracking jokes?" Maggie looks at George with painful eyes, she knew where he was coming from but out was easier to not let things like that out.
Maggie let out a sigh and walked out of the room, she had better things to do than to just sit in the intense air that O'Malley left for them all.
"Oh, Hey. Haven't seen you all day" Maggie says, catching up with Alex who was just down the hall.
"Too busy getting yelled at by red headed satan" Alex tells her, grabbing her arm and pulling her into the opened door way.
"Addison yelled at you? Was it in front of the patients?" Maggie furrowed her eyebrows, Amelia has told her story about the Doctor and as much as Maggie loved being a bitch, it was also very tiring.
"She didn't exactly yell" Alex told her, making her squint her eyes at him, "Fine, she's satan's whore"
"Nice, so did you yell back?" Maggie smiled a little at him.
"No" He huffed out.
"Babe, you lost your mojo" Maggie chuckled a little.
"Excuse you?"
"Oh, come on, don't tell me I'm lying" Maggie tells him, reaching over and pinching his bicep.
"Its bad enough that I'm seeing you but O'Malley plugs a hole with his finger and everyone walks around like he's dome kind of hero. I have one off day-"
"You chickened out"
"I hesitated briefly" Alex corrects her.
"Why didn't you come in?" Maggie smugly asks.
"And now I'm leaving" Alex goes to leave but a rapid Christina blocks him in.
"Its not in the morgue, Ive look in the ambulance, in the E.R. Hoe does one bloody, hairy leg going to destroy my career?" Christina rants, walking away before anyone can say anything.
"I- what?" Maggie looks at Alex amused.
"Dr. Karev?" Alex walks over to the blood lab and grabs the paper from the man.
"Hey, Alex" Maggie says softly, grabbing his arm to stop him from walking away, "I hope you get your mojo back, I miss you"
Alex gives her a small nod before giving her a forehead kiss, whispering a 'see you later'
Maggie stood in the room with Derek, Bailey, August and George. They were telling Bonnie and Tom the news. "This is hard because your body is in a certain amount of shock. Its preventing you from feeling pain, from feeling the extent of your injuries"
"Dr. Shepherd? We have a metal pole cutting a path through our insides, I don't know about Tom here, but I didn't expect to walk out of here anytime soon so... whatever it is you have to say it, just please say it" Bonnie pleads with him.
"Okay, Bonnie. In order to operate on Mr. Maynard, we have to separate you two. In order to do that, we have to move you backwards off the pole" Derek tells her straightforward like she asked.
"Cant you just pull the pole out of both of us?" Tom asks.
"If we did that, Mr. Maynard, you would both start bleeding very quickly. Right now the pole is plugging the wounds, once removed, the organs will shift and there is a great deal of damage" August explains further.
"So if you move me... I'll die?" Bonnie looks at Derek.
"We're gonna do everything we can to..."
"No. No. If anybody has to go, it should be me. You should move-"
"Mr. Maynard, your injuries are less extensive, if we pull the pole from you as we operate around it, we have a better chance at repairing the damage" August tells him, holding his arm to try and stop him from moving.
"Its not right, its not fair" Tom tells everyone.
"Tom, its not fair either way" Bonnie tells him, "Is, um... is my Danny- is he here yet?"
"Not yet, there are delays at the airport due to the storm. We could wait but the longer we do, the higher the risk of infection for-"Maggie tells Bonnie.
"No. No, this is better. Danny wouldn't understand. Ive had a couple of hours to, you know, process all of this but if he had to see me, talk to me like this, I- Well, I just think it would be too hard"
The team went in for surgery, and it ended how they expected it too. Derek and Maggie were asked to speak to Danny for Bonnie, so here they are, sitting in the lobby next to Danny.
"Did she, uh... Did she suffer?" Danny asked.
"No. Her injuries prevented her from... No, she wasn't in any pain" Derek told him.
"Good"
"She asked me to tell you that... She wanted you to know, that if love were enough... that if love were enough that she'd still be here with you" Derek said, struggling to get the words out.
Both of the doctors got up from the chair, making sure that Danny was okay before they left. They stepped into the elevator, not saying a word. Maggie didn't know what to say as she watched her brother try his hardest not to break down. She didn't have to look at him to know that he was struggling, he needed a moment to collect himself, so she grabbed the red stop button and pulled it, making the elevator stop.
Maggie didn't say anything as Derek walked to the back of the elevator, to take some deep breathes, "Okay?" Maggie said once he came back.
"Yeah" He told her so she pushed in the stop button and continued to be doctors for the day.
Ugh. I love Alex and Maggie. That's it.
Introducing August Kepner in this story!!!! Yay, we are gonna love her
