Season One, Episode Nine
Who's Zoomin who?
A phone call from George was not how Maggie usually started her morning, the loud ring of her phone made her realize why she always put it on silent.
"What George" Maggie pressed her phone to her ear and snapped.
"I have a rash" He hurried out but still being as quiet as he could.
"Okay, what type of rash?" Maggie asked, she looked over to her clock and realized that she should've gotten up 10 minutes ago.
"There red spots but they kind of look brown? I don't know, I need you to look at them" George practically whined, she heard voices coming from the other end and Maggie guessed that it was probably Izzie.
"When was the last time you had Sex? With that nurse, Olivia right?" Maggie asked as she tried to get ready for the day.
"Yeah, why?"
"You think it could be an STD?" Maggie flat out asked making him cough from surprise.
"God, I hope not. Just meet me at the hospital, I'll talk to Olivia" George hung up the phone before Maggie could say goodbye.
She slipped on her shoes and walked out of the bedroom, Pat was where she usually was with a cup of coffee in hand.
"Who has an STD?" Pat looked up at Maggie with her small framed glasses.
"George, I think" Maggie shrugged, "At least that's what it sounds like"
"That sucks" Pat nodded her head, "Oh, Kelly and Fin want to have another girls night but I told them that you were gonna try to work extra hours, is it okay if they still come over?"
"It should be fine, I'll probably come home and pass out anyway" Maggie grabbed an apple from the bowl by the fridge, "I've got to go, I'll call you during lunch?"
Pat nodded her head in agreement, "I love you, hope you don't have an STD like George"
Maggie let out a small laugh and walked out of the apartment door and to the hospital to see if George had contracted a sexually transmitted disease.
Maggie leaned next to the door and waited for George to stop talking to Olivia, she watched as Izzie walked up to the two and interrupt the conversation.
"George"
"Hey"
"Olivia" Izzie said in surprise.
"Hi, Dr. Steven" Olivia smiled at the doctor and then looked at George, "I'll see you later"
"Okay, bye"
Maggie walked up and stood next to George as Izzie looked at him expectingly, "Yeah. She's into me"
"Way to go, George. She's cute" Izzie smiled, "So, this morning, you really weren't..."
Maggie let out a surprised laugh at where Izzie was headed, "Anytime you want to apologize"
"Then what were you doing in the bathroom for so long?" Izzie finally asked.
"I have to go" George looked at Maggie and then grabbed her wrist and guided her to the locker room.
"Seriously, Georgie. I really need to check it out" Maggie said once they were in the room, she turned her head to look at Alex trying to tame his nose hairs. George pulled her along toward Alex which she was more reluctant too, "George, no. Not him, please"
When he finally let go of her wrist, he began to lean closer to Alex, "Um..."
"I know I'm pretty to look at and all, George, but back up" Alex looked at him through the glass and then looked at Maggie as she rolled her eyes.
"I need to ask you something" George said hesitantly.
"George, stop. You're making a mistake" Maggie said again, why would he think going to Alex was the best idea?
"I'm waiting"
"Okay, I Uh... I seem to be having this skin... thing going on, like a rash really and I think I know what it is but I can't get close enough to tell for sure" George looked nervous but Alex looked like he couldn't care less.
"If you're going to show Alex, then you have to show me. I'm your best friend, that's how it works" Maggie stared at him, of course she knew where the rash was but he was definitely not the guy she was attracted too.
"It's kind of located in an, um, you know, Private-"
"You're a Doctor, George. It's called a dick" Alex stopped him, "You have a rash on your penis?"
"Yeah seriously, you have one, he has one" Maggie said pointing to George and then to Alex, "I've seen plenty"
"I think I can describe it" George said, trying another way, "Um, it's k- red"
"Come on. Drop your pants, George"
"Just show us your junk so we can get this over with" Alex said, his patience wearing thin. George stepped back to check if anyone else was in the room and then stepped back and started to untie his scrubs. He held his pants out so that Maggie and Alex could get a better look.
"Ooo" Maggie hummed when she looked at the red spots on his penis, it didn't look pretty and it had to itch or hurt at least.
"So?"
"Dude, you got syphilis" Alex sat up at the same time as Maggie and looked at George.
"Yeah, definitely. It's syphilis" Maggie agreed, she and Alex gave him arm a slight pat before walking out of the locker room.
"Patient presented with abdominal pain and blood in his urine, once his work-up came back unrevealing, the urologist suggested cystoscopy" Maggie presented the patients file in front of Burke.
"Reason?"
"To get a look inside the bladder" Alex responded.
"I appreciate you doing this, Preston. I know this is a little out of your field" The patient laying on the table says to Burke.
"That's not a problem. It give my interns something to do" Burke looks at both Alex and Maggie.
"I have a feeling you keep them plenty busy. We were in the same frat at Tulane, he's gone from torturing pledges to torturing intern. Am I right?"
"Be very careful how you two answer that" Maggie and Alex look at each other, they both were trying to hold in a laugh.
"I could tell some stories"
"Bill, you have a camera snaking up you mojo. It's not the time to cross me" Burke interrupted his friend before he could spew some embarrassing stories.
"It isn't anything too serious?" Bills wife asks.
"That's what this procedure will tell us. You don't worry about anything but growing my godson in there" Burke tells her gently, in hopes that it'll come her worrying.
"He kicks like you wouldn't believe"
"A badass, just like his father" Burke smiles down at Bill, "Move a little to the right" He tells Alex, "There"
"What do you see? What is it?" Bill asks.
"Could be any number of things. Karev, take a biopsy of the mass. Dr. Shepherd, schedule a C.T. Let's not worry unless we have too" Burke instructs the two interns, making Maggie leave the room so she could do her job.
After Maggie scheduled the C.T. she went to the Hemotology Lab, George he paged her to that location and she could only assume that he got his results back.
"Hi, uh, results for George O'Malley?" Maggie heart as she stepped off the elevator.
"I don't see it here. What's the patients name?"
"O'Malley, George. Look, it's just a simple blood test" George practically yelled at the guy.
"Here you go"
"Thank you" George tells him and then walks off so he could read the paper.
"What does it say?" Maggie asks from behind him, trying to look over his shoulder to read the results.
He slammed the paper down with a sigh, "Not good, then, buddy?" He grabbed her arm and dragged her to the nearest empty room.
"God George, stop doing that" She yelled, pushing him off of her, "I can't believe you have syphilis"
"Shh!" He ran over to every window and closed the blinds and then ran over to the door and shut it, "I don't know how this happened"
"Of course you do. It all starts when you have sex with a person without learning if they're clean or not"
"Olivia. She's not like that" He swings around and looks at Maggie, defending the girl that gave him and STD.
"It's 2005, you'd be surprised at all sorts of things people carry around" Maggie tells him honestly.
"Maybe I've been sleeping around. Maybe I got ladies" That made Maggie laugh.
"Yeah right, George. You would've told me and you know it" Maggie tried to stop laughing but instead it came out as a smile.
"Shut up" George begins to walk around, "What am
I gonna do?"
"You'll be fine, a couple doses of penicillin will knock it right out" She said trying to calm him down.
"What am I gonna do about Olivia?"
"I mean, stop sleeping with her would be a good idea" Maggie laughed, making George turn around to glare, "If she gave it to you, you have to tell her"
"How am I gonna tell her? 'Uh, hey, Olivia. How are you doing? By the way, I got the syph. How about you?" George mocked.
"I think you should go a different approach"
"No, it's good advice, really good advice. Thank you very much" George left the room and Maggie was still laughing at the way he was handling all of this.
Despite George claiming to be upset with Maggie, he still followed her into the C.T. room, he most likely didn't want to be alone with the all the new thoughts streaming in his head.
She stood next to Alex, like she's been doing the past couple of days. Which completely shocked her at how well they were getting along and Maggie hated herself when her mind wondered. Like now, Alex has his arms crossed which made his biceps look way more muscular then usual and she couldn't help but stare.
"I gotta say, George. I didn't think you had it in you. It's always the quite ones. So who's the women?" Alex said, trying to nosy his way into George's business.
"None of your business"
"Oh, Come on" Alex pushed, "Maggie, who is it? Maggie?" Alex said her name again when he noticed that she wasn't paying attention.
"What?" Maggie jolted up as if someone had woken her from a long slumber, "Whose, who?"
"Who gave George the cooties on the playground?" He gave her a weird look, probably wondering where her head was at.
Maggie looked at his face and then shrugged, retrieving away from him to look at the monitor.
"You must have had something like this before, right?" George asked him, bending down next to Maggie.
"I never talk about my penis with other men" Alex shook his head at the thought.
"I don't n- either, normally" George stutters, looking at the guy looking after Bills scans.
"Well I for one don't mind talking about my vagina and since no ones asking but still sharing stories, I've never had any ouchies, down there" Maggie lifted her head from her hand and sighed. She pointed to the screen so show Alex the massive growth, "We should go tel Burke" Maggie turned around and gave the monitor guy a pat on the back and then gave George a nod.
"You know, I wouldn't mind talking about my penis if it was with you" Alex helplessly flirted with Maggie as he followed her out of the small room.
"Mmm" She thought, "I'll think about it"
"There's definitely a growth protruding into the bladder but look at the edges" Burke lifted his finger and guided it along the screen, "I don't think it's a tumor"
"Kind of shapes like an ovary" Alex joked, looking up at Burke at see that he didn't find it funny.
"That the flip answer you're gonna give your patient, Dr. Karev? This is one of my oldest friends, you might want to take this seriously" Burke looked back at him with a cold stone face, definitely not amused.
"I'm sorry, sir"
"You better be"
"We haven't gotten the rest of the labs back, if this is your friend you shouldn't rule out any possibility that could help us further understand what is really going on. Right, Dr. Burke?" Maggie looked at the man expectingly, she knew she was right and so did he.
Burke turned his body too look at Maggie, opening his mouth to say something but then shut it when George walked into the room, "I got the rest of the labs back, they did a chromosome analysis of the tissue. You won't believe this"
Burke took the paperwork from George and flipped through it, his face falling as he read the results, "Bill has an ovary?"
Maggie checked her watch and noticed that it was almost time for lunch, showing her watch to George and Alex, she looked up at Burke, "We're headed to lunch, we'll give you time to think" She tapped her pointer finger to her head and backed out of the room.
"God, an ovary" George said again, still shocked from the other times he's said it.
"It gives new meaning to the term 'metrosexual" Apex replied, following Maggie and George down the stairs.
"Makes you wonder how Bill's wife, really got pregnant" Maggie thought aloud.
"Hi, George" Olivia said once she opened the door.
"Olivia" He looked at her surprised.
"Hello, Miss. Olivia" Maggie smirked at her like she knew a secret that she didn't.
"Maggie"
"What am I, Invisible?" Alex asked her.
"Come on, Alex. Let's leave the two lonely souls alone" Maggie grabbed the extra fabric from his lab coat and dragged him out of the stairway.
"You know, you didn't have to do that back there" Alex brought his hand to the back of his head and rubbed nervously.
"Do what? George wanted us to leave, I think" Maggie shrugged.
"No, I meant with Burke, what you said" He explained.
Maggie let out a noise, "Dude, don't even worry about it. What's the point in living if you can't undermine someone's authority"
"You have got to stop calling me 'dude" Alex let out a small smirk, he was amused by the way she thought but he also found it incredibly sexy at how she carried herself.
"Why? I call everyone dude" Maggie furrowed her eyebrows at him, why did it matter all of a sudden?
"Because- you know what? Never mind" He continued walking ahead of her, leaving Maggie still confused as to why it was a big deal.
Maggie walked around the eating area with Alex and George, even she noticed the stares George was getting.
"Do you think she's talking about me?" George asked quietly.
"She's a girl, she's obviously talking about you" Maggie looked at him with a 'duh' expression. She noticed Olivia turn to look at George, which made Maggie glare at her in response.
"Dude, it's a good thing" Alex added.
"I don't see how you qualify that as good. The whole hospitals gonna know that he's got the syph"
"Exactly" George agreed.
"Georgie, get a clue. Syphilis is the best thing that ever happened to you. In their eyes, you're a player" Alex set his trey down at the table where Izzie and Christina were sitting.
"Being a player doesn't make women line up at your door to fuck you. Especially if they know you have an STD but don't let little bitch Olivia mess with your game" Maggie took the seat next to Izzie, handing her the tomato's from her salad.
"Hey, Syph boy" Christina greeted, making Maggie choke on air.
"You told her?" George looked at Izzie.
"You told her" Maggie pointed at Izzie with her fork.
Izzie lightly hit Maggie on the shoulder, "Just Christina"
"Syph boy. Kind of like superboy, only diseased" Alex commented, taking a bite from his sandwich after he did so.
"Izzie didn't have to say a word. Around here, the only thing that spreads faster than disease is gossip" Christina told him honestly.
"That's not true. Just cause Izzie can't keep her mouth shut doesn't mean everyone knows" George yanked his chair from under the table and aggressively sat down.
"Once you started telling people who aren't me, it's bound to get around. Your mistake, live with it" Maggie twirled her lettuce filled fork before shoving it into her mouth.
"How are you feeling? Sorry about the syphilis" Meredith said as soon as she took a seat in between Maggie and George.
"See" Maggie rested her case.
"Everyone in this hospital knows?"
"Knows your a player" Alex tried to get it through George's head.
"Women might think that players are attractive but that behavior gets old fast, who wants to get into a relationship with someone and be constantly worried that their gonna shove their dick in someone else's vagina?" Maggie asked, looking at Alex briefly before looking about at George.
"Both of you are disturbed" George shuttered.
"True"
"Fair but I'm right" Maggie shrugged.
"Everyones got a secret. Be glad yours is out in the open" Alex ignored Maggie.
"I don't have any secrets, I just have stuff that I think it's nobodies business to know" Maggie replied.
"Oh, yeah, Alex? What's yours?" Christina asked him, "And doesn't that count as a secret, Maggie?"
"You show me yours and I'll show you mine" Alex responded with a smirk.
"Maybe. Besides, I think I've got quite the reputation , who'd want to spill my secrets?" Maggie asked honestly.
"I bet you've got some seriously kinky skeletons in your closest" Alex nodded along to the the thoughts in his head, "And you" He pointed at Maggie, "Don't even get me started on what I think you're hiding"
"What's in my closet is none of your business"
"Agreed but I do hate that I'm intrigued on what you think I'm hiding" Maggie squinted at Alex.
"Well, I don't have any secrets. My life is boring" Izzie smiled.
"Everyones got something to hide" Meredith mutters. They all turned there attention to Meredith, wondering what she had to hide.
"Yeah maybe, I mean I wouldn't tell any one of you my deepest darkest secret" Maggie looked at George's face, "Okay, maybe George but Pat, Fin and Kelly know everything about me and I know everything about them. I think it's only called hiding when it's about something you know could affect the other person negatively and I know first hand on what that feels like"
Now everyone was looking at Maggie, what did she know? It was like she was this magical book that nobody could understand because it was meant for them.
It was that time of the day where George finally got a shot in his ass to cure his Syphilis and Maggie was just waiting for this moment.
"Can I do it? Please!" Maggie begged, looking at the medium sized needle that Alex had in his hand.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" George ignored Maggie and looked at Alex.
"It's a shot of penicillin, George. Be grateful I'm even doing this, I've already seen more of you then I ever wanted to. I'll be fighting nightmares for a week" Alex pushed gently on the needle to get any air bubbles out.
"You know what? Forget this" George stopped pulling his pants down and looked at Alex.
"Come on, Georgie. Do you want to be Syph free or not?" Maggie groaned, "Drop your pants so Alex can stick a needle in your ass"
George dropped his pants and leaned against the bed, "I cannot believe this"
"Meredith, go away!"
"Oh, George. I thought you could use some moral support" She said, walking around the bed to look at his butt.
"No. No moral support. I'm indisposed here"
"George, quit being a sissy. It's not even a big deal" Maggie rolled her eyes at his over exaggeration.
"And you have a cute butt" Meredith added.
"I have a cute butt, too. You want to see?" Alex smirked.
"Oh, get out. You're doing it wrong" She grabbed the needle and stood behind George's butt.
"Be my guest"
"What- Alex. Alex!" George called after him, shutting the curtain once Alex left only for it to be opened again by Izzie.
"Hey!"
"What are we doing here?" Izzie asked, walking next to Meredith.
"Breaking George's Spirit" George told her, closing the curtain again.
"We are curing George's, Syph" Maggie informed the blonde.
"I don't like needles"
"You're a doctor, George. Get over it"
"Other side" Meredith instructed.
"Izzie?" The voice of Christina called out.
"Yeah?"
"Mr. franklins procedures been scheduled for after lunch- Oh, what are we doing?" Christina asked opening the curtain to reveal George.
"We are saving George from a future of festering sores and insanity" Izzie said, letting Christina in on the processes.
"Oh, cute butt"
"Told you"
"It is cute, like a baby's"
"You know I have spent hours, days, years imagining myself half-naked in a room with four women, the reality is so much better" George jumped back once Meredith was finished giving George his shots.
"George, if you cry, I will personally hit you myself" Maggie yelled after him.
Maggie walked side by side with Meredith, the two didn't have much to do so they decided to roam around the hospital.
"I can't believe George got Syph" Meredith let out a chuckle.
"I know, I wonder where Olivia got it from" Maggie pondered.
"Probably some dude from the bar" Meredith joked, "Oh, Derek told me that you were adopted, I didn't know that"
Maggie stopped in her tracks and turned her body so she was facing Meredith directly, "What did you just say?"
"Derek- he just told me that you were adopted and-"
"So is talking about my personal life a hobby for you two?" Maggie seethed.
"No, Maggie"
"Fine, Meredith. How on earth did that get brought up in conversation?" Maggie asked.
"He loves you and he's trying-"
"God, Meredith you're so caught up in the hair and the dreamy lifestyle" Maggie let out a low chuckle, "You don't tell someone you love that they aren't family cause there's no blood relation"
"Maggie I-"
"No" She stopped her, "He didn't even tell you what he said to me the day I left for college, did he?"Aggie watched Meredith go silent, "Typical. Always wanting to be the good guy that everyone likes, if you really want to know the type of person Derek is, why don't you just ask him that" Maggie turned her body to walk away, "Or better yet, why don't you ask him why he came to Seattle"
This time, Maggie was walking full speed away from Meredith. Who casually brings something like that up in conversation? But Maggie couldn't be mad at Meredith, well not fully. It was Derek's fault, All Derek's fault.
She speed passed the crowed to catch up to Derek's last known spot, it wasn't hard to pinpoint him considering his hair stood up half a foot. She didn't know what to say or how she was going to get her words out without feeling what she felt the night she left.
"You fucking dickhead" Well that's a way to start a conversation. Derek looked around the now staring crowd and then back at his sister, pulling her into the room.
"What now, Maggie" Derek looked at her with disappointment.
"Don't act like you don't know, don't act like my personal life isn't a conversation starter for you. 'Oh, fun fact, I have a sister whose adopted" Maggie lowered her voice to match his.
"Here you go again, Maggie. Placing the blame all on me, you're not always the victim" Derek spit out.
"You know what, I do blame you" Maggie yelled, "I felt like complete shit growing up because of how horrible you treated me. So what, I was smarter then you or got better grades or graduated with honors, it was you that made all those achievements feel like nothing. Because you were jealous. You couldn't have anyone else being the golden child, you wouldn't have it so pushed me down. That night was all you ever wanted, you finally made me seem like the crazy person, like everyone had there eyes closed to who I really was but you know what? They all had their eyes closed to you, if they really saw how disgusting and horrible you were then you'd be the one going years without a single phone call from Mom or Nancy"
"I was always better then you"
"You were never better then me, you just got so good at making me look small and you know what? I'm done. I am done with you and Meredith and every fucking shitty thing that you have done. I didn't deserve what you put me through. All that it going to come and bite you in the ass and I will be waiting to see it happen so I can laugh at your downfall" Maggie pushed Derek out of the way and opened the door to get out, "I hope you get hit by a semi-truck"
She wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of making her cry, it was the last thing she was ever going to do. If anything, she was going to be the best goddamn doctor, way better then he is and she's she's going to win every single award and she's going to send him pictures of her holding that trophy just to gloat. Maggie already knew that she was a better person then Derek and she's going to make sure that when the name Shepherd comes up, there going to think of Maggie and not Derek.
Maggie walked through the lobby with Alex, they were finally going home and she needed some rest. She turned her head and noticed the red hair she's only seen in photos but she knew exactly who she was. Maggie stopped in her tracks and looked at the sight in front of her, Derek's face was everything and when he looked up at her, she just waved and smiled.
Staying in contact with Amelia was absolutely great when she needed something or someone to come and stir some trouble in Derek's life and Addison was exactly the person to do the job.
"Whose that?" Alex asked Maggie when he noticed the red head.
"No idea" She shrugged and began walking toward the parking lot.
"Alex, where do you live?" Maggie asked suddenly.
"I'm staying at a hotel right now, why?" Alex turned himself to look at Maggie.
"You know, I just love hotel beds. Don't you?" Maggie gave him an innocent smile and the mixture of adoration and excitement on Alex's face made Maggie feel amazing.
"Lets go" Alex hoped in Maggie's car and guided her to the hotel, it was a short distance from the hospital and Maggie thanked god for that. After George had told her that Olivia got Syphilis from some random dude and Alex's name was in the clear, she thought 'What's the worse that could happen?'
Maybe it'll be the best whimmed decision that she's ever made.
