One

Season one, Episode one
A hard days night

Maggie didn't grow up with much privacy, having four sisters and a brother, it got pretty hard having a space of your own. So when she got into University of Washington, she was happy to get out of New York and begin a life that was her own and finally being able to stand in the middle of her dream hospital, was just amazing.

She looked around the room, eyeing the group of interns like herself, each of them excited to start the first day of the rest of there lives.

"Each of you come here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago, you were in med school, being taught by doctors. Today you are the doctors, the seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the nest and worst of your life, you will be pushed to the breaking point, look around you, say hello to your competition, eight of you will switch to an easier specialty, five of you will crack under the pressure and two of you will be asked to leave, this is your starting line, this is your arena. How well you play, that's up to you" Maggie wasn't really the one for speeches but Dr. Webber's speech was a good one, maybe it was because she was so excited to finally be here.

The group of interns took there rightful spot in the locker room, Maggie thought they all looked excited before but watching them put on there stethoscope was something else.

"Okay, Martin, Robinson, Bond, Hawkins" Maggie heard some guy yell out, she sighed when she didn't hear her name but still she was glad to wait.

"Only six women out of twenty" Some dirty blonde said as she looked around the room.

"Yeah, I hear one of them's a model, seriously, that's gonna help with the respect thing?" The dark haired girl said with a slight mocking tone.

"She's probably paid off all of her student debt, I should've thought of that" Maggie said jokingly to the both of them, she watched as the dirty blonde smirk at the joke.

"You're Christina and Margaret right?" She asked pointing to both of the individuality as she said there names.

"Maggie, please. Don't make me sound like an old lady" Maggie replied back with a light laugh, out of six children she had to be the one named after a great great grandmother.

"Which resident are you assigned to? I got bailey" Christina asked the both of them as she rushed to get all of her things in order.

"The nazi? Me too" The girl responded.

"Shame, me too"

"You got the Nazi? So did I, at least we'll be tortured together right? I'm George O'Malley, we met at the, uh, mixer, you had on a black dress with a slit up the side, straps sandals, and... now you think I'm gay. No, I'm not gay" The man with dark short hair started speaking and immediately Maggie knew to get out of the conversation before she got second hand embarrassment. So she looked at Christina and looked toward the door motioning for them to leave, which they did, happily.

"O'Malley, Shepherd, Yang, Grey, Stevens"

Maggie walked up to the guy assigning residents, "Bailey?" She looked over at Christina and then too the women at the end of the hall.

"That's the Nazi?" Christina asked as she looked at Dr. Bailey.

"I thought the Nazi would be a guy" Maggie said, letting out a little hum.

"I thought the Nazi would be a Nazi" Meredith added.

"Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant and they cal her a Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice" A tall blonde women cake up from beside them said.

"Wow, well I'm guessing that you're the model?" Maggie scoffed, giving the taller women an eye roll.

"Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens but everyone calls me Izzie" Izzie extended her hand out for Dr. Bailey to shake but instead the shorter women looked at it and then looked at the group of interns.

"I have five rules, memorize them. Rule number one: don't bother sucking up, I already hate you, that's not gonna change. Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers, nurses will page you" Maggie was the first to grab the stuff on the counter, watching the rest of the stumble "You will answer every page at a run- a run- that's rule number two. Your first shift starts now and last 48 hours. You're interns l, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don't complain"

The interns tried there hardest to catch up, walking through the hospital so Dr. Bailey could show them around, "On-Call rooms, attending a hog them. Sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three: if I'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four: the dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you would've woken me up for no good reason, we clear?"

Maggie watched as Meredith raised her hand, "Yes?" Dr. Bailey asked.

"You said five rules, that was only four"

Dr. Bailey looked down at her now beeping pager, "Rule number five: when I move, you move" They followed the Doctor as she began to run, "Out of my way!"

The group stood on the helipad on top of the hospital, waiting for the helicopter to bring down what Maggie presumed would be there new patient.

She shield her eyes just like the rest of them did as the wind began to pick up because of the Helicopter landing, "What do we got?"

"Katie Bryce, 15-years- old female, new onset seizures, intermittent for the past week. I.V. lost en route, started grand Mal seizing as we descended" The Doctor in formed them.

Maggie ran behind the doctors as they pushed Katie Bryce into the hosanna into the nearest empty room.

"All right, get her on her side" Dr. Bailey instructed the interns, watching what they did as she spoke, "Izzie, 10 milligrams diazepam I.M"

Meredith reached for the cord, "No, no. The white lead is on the right. Righty, whity, smoke over fire"

Bailey looked at Maggie next, "A large-bore I.V. don't let the blood hemolyze. Let's go!"

Katie stopped shaking as soon at Izzie injected her with Diazepam, "Well that doesn't look too good" A women walked into the room, looking at the scared look that all the Interns had to Katie.

"No it doesn't, Dr. Collazo" Dr. Bailey replied back.

"Okay well, let's shotgun her, Dr. Bailey" She said, handing the charts back to Christina.

"That means every test in the book- C.T., CBC, chem-7, Tox screen. Christina, you're on labs. George, patient work-ups. Meredith and Margaret, get Katie for a C.T. she's your responsibility now" Dr. Bailey looked at each of her interns before walking away.

"Wait. What about me?" Izzie asked, stopping Bailey from leaving.

"Honey, you get to do rectal exams" Bailey looked at her before leaving the room entirely.

"Tough break" Maggie said, giving the blonde a small grin.

Maggie and Meredith were completely lost and it didn't help when they also had a moody teenager.

"You guys are lost" Katie told them, staring down at Maggie.

"We are not lost" Maggie sighed, they were totally lost, "You feeling better?"

"How do you think I'm feeling? I'm missing my pageant" Katie snarked back.

"You're missing your pageant?" Meredith questioned.

"The Spokane teen miss, I was in the top 10 after the first 2 rounds. This is my year, I could have won" Katie in formed the two doctors as Maggie took a right down the hallway, only to realize that she went the wrong way.

"You're so lost. What are you guys, like, new?" Neither of them replied to that, they just kept walking down the hallway, hoping to find something.

"I twisted my ankle in talent rehearsal. I do rhythmic gymnastics, which is, like, really cool. Nobody else does it and I tripped over my ribbon and I didn't get stuck with someone this clueless and that was, like, a nurse" Katie must've takes there silence as something else because she she really thought that they wanted to know any of that.

"You wanna know what else is, like, totally cool?" Maggie began, bringing her voice to a higher level to match Katie's, "Leaving you, like, totally stranded!"

"I'm pretty sure that's against the rules" Katie rolled her eyes at the mocking doctor.

Maggie shook her head at the teenager, continuing to make her way to the C.T. room.

Maggie took a seat next to Christina in the cafeteria, she watched Izzie's face shift to one of disgust when she looked at George's food.

"The shift is a marathon, not a sprint. Eat" He told her as he took a bite of his sandwich.

"I can't"

"We aren't even close to being done with this shift, if you want to last a whole 48 hours, you'll need to eat something" Maggie backed George up, taking a bite of her own sandwich.

"You try eating something after preforming 17 rectal exams, the Nazi hates me" Izzie complained.

"Yeah, probably"

George kicked Maggie under the table and gave her a look, "The Naxi's a resident, I have attending's hating me"

"You know Meredith is inbred?" Christina said out of nowhere.

"Like it's uncommon around here to be a doctors parents-"

"No, royally inbred. Her mother is Ellis Grey" Christina whispered around her.

"Damn"

"Shut up. The Ellis Grey?" Izzie said shocked.

"Who's Ellis Grey?" George asked the three.

"Come on, Georgie. The Grey Method? How did you even get in here?" Maggie scoffed at George, looking around at her fellow interns with a laugh.

"She was one of the first big chick surgeons" Izzie explained.

"She's a living legend. Yeah, she won the Harper Avery twice" Christina added on.

"So I didn't know one thing" George defended himself.

"Talk about parental pressure" Izzie whispered.

"God, I would kill to have Ellis Grey as a mother. I'd kill to be Ellis Grey" Christina told the group, like she was in a trance like state, "All I need is one good case"

"Oh! Hey, Meredith!" Maggie turned to give Christina a look before smiling at Meredith.

"Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass. If I hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath, I'd kevorkian her with my bare hands" Meredith said, sitting down on the last empty chair.

"Right on" Maggie nodding her head along with what Meredith was saying.

"What?" Meredith ignored Maggie and looked at the interns staring at her.

"Good Afternoon, Interns" Dr. Collazo said making her way next to George, "It's posted, but I thought I'd share the good news personally, as I hope that you know, the honor of performing the first surgery is given to the intern that shows the most promise and considering I lucked out on running the O.R. today, I get to make that choice" She slammed her hand on George's back, "George O'Malley"

"Me?" He said with food in his mouth.

"You'll scrub in for an appendectomy this afternoon, lucky for you, Dr. Burke will be the one instructing you today. Congratulations, I do hope that you enjoy it" She looked down at George and gave him a lazy smile and then walking away from the table of interns.

Maggie furrowed her eyebrows at George, he's the one that shows most promise? "Did he say me?" Maggie rolled her eyes at the male, yeah right.

Maggie and Meredith were back in Katie Bryce's room, making sure that everything was going the way it needed too.

"Katie, honey, Mom and Dad are here" Mrs. Bryce walked in and headed straight to her daughter.

"They gave her a sedative for the C.T. scan, so she's a little groggy" Meredith informed the parents.

"Will she be alright?"

"Our doctor at home said she might need an operation, is that true?"

"What kind of operation?"

"She's, um- well, you know what? I'm not the doctor, I'm a doctor-" Meredith began to stutter which made Maggie shake her head with disappointment.

"As of right now, we are running all the test needed to find out how and why Katie is experiencing these seizures and we do not have the answers to your questions but when we know, so will you" Maggie interrupted Meredith so she didn't dig herself into a bigger embarrassing hole, "We will go get the Doctor assigned to this case, if you would like us too"

They watched as the Bryce's shook there head yes and with that, Maggie grabbed Merediths arm and pulled her out of the room, "Well that could've gone better"

The two interns headed straight to the door leading to the main waiting room, only to find Bailey on the receiving end.

"What?" She snapped.

"Katie's parents have questions, do you talk to them or do I ask Collazo?" Meredith asked.

"Uh No, Collazo is off the case. Katie belongs to the new attending now, Dr. Shepherd. He's over there" Bailey, pointed to the tall man with great hair.

Maggie groaned at the sight of her older brother, she watched at he looked up at Meredith and then stared at her with realization, "What was th-" She began to ask the women standing next to her but she already bolted and her brother didn't really leave much room for interrogation since he followed after her, just as fast. This is why I wanted to be in Seattle by myself, She thought, checking her watch to see if it was almost time to watch George perform surgery from the Gallery and it was, so she made her way to the O.R.

Maggie took a front row seat in the gallery to get a better view of George, he was chanting something to himself and pacing slightly.

"He's gonna faint, he's a fainter" One of the other Interns told the group.

"No, code brown, right in the pants" Another one dismissed.

"He's all about the flop sweat, he's gonna sweat himself unsterile"

"10 bucks says he messes up the McBurney" The guy on the edge says.

"$15 says he cries" Christina betted.

"$20 he chokes" Maggie said, putting her own money into the mix.

"$50 says he pulls the whole thing off" Maggie turned her head slightly, giving Meredith a look, "That's one of us down there, the first one of us, where's your loyalty" Meredith looked back at Maggie.

"$75 says he can't even I.D.The appendix" Christina said after a moment of silence.

"Oh, yeah, that ones good" Maggie chuckled a little.

"Yeah, I'll take that action" Izzie said from beside her.

The group all leaned forward when they saw Preston Burke walk into the room, "Here it comes" Meredith said.

Maggie looked over at the new interns that walked into the gallery, one of them caught her eye and winked, making Maggie roll her eyes in return. She turned her attention back at George, watching the surgical nurse hand him a scalpel, making the room cheer in response.

"That Burke is trouble" Christina said after the man motioned for the group to cut it out.

George made the first cut into the skin, reaching his hand over so he could get the pickups, after he grabbed those the nurse gave him the clamps, "I'm there" George announced, making the group cheer.

"Damn, he got the peritoneum open. I'm out"

"I told you, he's gonna pull it off" Meredith smiled down at George.

"We've still got some time left, let's just wait" Maggie declared as she ate her snack bar.

They watched as George took out the appendix, cheering once again but the hard part wasn't over yet.

"He's still got invert the stump into the cecum" Maggie commented just as he broke the Cecum, making every gasp.

They watched as George choked, not knowing what to do next, "Shit, come on, George" Maggie said aloud.

Burke pushed George out of the way as he continued to choke, "Dammit"

"He's 007" The guy that winked at her earlier said.

"007, yep"

"What's 007 mean?" Izzie looked at Maggie and asked.

"License to kill" Maggie said, getting up from her chair and walking out with Christina.

Maggie sat in between Meredith and Izzie, she was practicing her suturing on a banana that she stole from the break room.

"007. They're calling me 007 aren't they" George asked again, he sat on the wheelchair in front of the beds.

"No ones calling you 007" The four of the groaned out.

"I was on the elevator, Murphy whispered, '007'-"

Christina got up from one of the beds, "Okay, how many times do we have to go through this, George? 5, 10? Give me a number or else I'm gonna hit you"

"Murphy whispered, '007' and everyone laughed" George said again but faster.

"He wasn't talking about you" Izzie said, trying to cheer George up.

"Are you sure?" George asked softly.

"Oh come on, O'Malley. Get it together, that whole 'intern with promise' shit was created to make you fail, it's rigged" Maggie groaned out, "If you begin to see yourself as '007' then that's what you'll turn into" She got up from the bed with her Banana and walked next to Christina to get a drink.

"Yeah, it's a state of mind" Christina added.

"Says the girl who finished first in her class at Stanford and the girl who out ranked everyone in the state at Harvard" George exclaimed.

Maggie didn't even have the time to respond, hers and Meredith pager went off and it was a 911 on Katie Bryce. They two looked at each other before bolting out of the hallway and too Katie's room.

They made it in almost 3 minutes, only to find Katie Bryce alive and semi healthy in her room.

"Took you guys long enough" Katie set her magazine down and said.

"You're okay? The nurse paged us, 911" Meredith exclaimed, still trying to catch her breath.

"I had to go all 'exorcist' to get her to even pick up the phone" Katie informed them.

"Wait, so there's nothing wrong with you?" Maggie picked up her chart and read it, "Your kidding me, right?"

"I'm bored" She told them simply.

"You little... we are not a cruise director" Meredith told her, taking off her stethoscope.

"You don't have to wig out" Katie rolled her eyes, "The pageants supposed to be on cable but this crappy hospital doesn't get the channel. If that cow Kylie wood is gonna walk off with my crown, I have to see it. Can you call someone"

"This is an actual Hospital, there are real sick people here. So go to sleep and stop wasting my time" Maggie sassed back.

"But I can't sleep, my heads all full"

"That's called 'thinking' go with it" Meredith followed Maggie out of the room, both of them looking at each other before continuing to make there way back.

Maggie stopped at the E.R. to grab some things, all she needed was an extra pair of gloves so that she could put them in the lounge area, it was easier to practice suturing with gloves on so that you could get used to that feeling and Dr. Bailey told her that she wasn't on Katie Bryce's case anymore and that she needed her to stick the station instead because they were behind. She approached the desk slowly, watching as the guy from earlier make a small scene.

"4-B's got post-op pneumonia, let's start antibiotics"
He told the nurse that was standing next to him.

"Are you sure that's the right diagnosis?" The nurse questioned.

"Well, I don't know, I'm only an intern. Here's an idea, why don't you go spend four years in med school and then let me know if it's the right diagnosis? She's short of breath, she's got a fever. She's post-op, start the antibiotics" Maggie mentally gagged at the way the asshat was treating the lady, "God, I hate nurses" He said, walking over and standing next to Maggie.

"I'm Alex, I'm with Jeremy. You're with the Nazi, right?" He told her, setting his stuff down on the counter.

"She may not have pneumonia, ya know. She could be splinting or have a P.E." Maggie informed him.

"Like I said, I hate nurses" Alex replies back, stepping behind her to go on the other side.

She let out a sigh before turning to face the guy, "Okay, you're either really stupid or just arrogant. Let's go back a few moment, shall we? You asked if I was with the Nazi, who is, as you know, a resident, tell me how it would makes sense for a Nurse to be following a doctor. Think about what you say and even then don't speak at all" Maggie stepped back from the counter so she could set the stuff down, "Oh and Alex, you might want to tone down the dickness, you'll get a lot further with nurses on your side"

Maggie walked out of the room with two boxes of gloves, making her way down to the hallway that became her and her groups 'spot'

She sat in a room with the rest of the interns that were called in, she didn't have any idea why and she was sure that they didn't either, "Why are we even here?"

"What are you doing?" Meredith ignored Maggie's constant complaining and asked Christina.

"I'm suturing a banana with the vain hope that it wake up my brain" She replied back, not looking up from her banana.

"Try exercising" Maggie said, giving her another option. She looked over at George who let out a little laugh.

"What are you smiling at, 007" Christina sassed back, making George's face drop, "I'm sorry. I get mean when I'm tired"

"You know what? I don't care, I comforted a family and I got to hang out on the O.R. today, all is well" George gloated.

"Does anybody know why we're here?" Christina asked. Maggie looked at her and threw her hands up in the air.

"I have been asking that question since we got in here" She complained.

"Well, good morning" Derek walked in and said, making Maggie lift up her head and groan.

"Morning" A couple of interns replied back.

"I'm gonna do something pretty rare for a surgeon. I've got this kid, Katie Bryce. Right now, she's a mystery. She doesn't respond to our meds, the labs are clean, the scans are pure but she's having seizures- grand mal seizures with no visible cause, she's a ticking clock. She's gonna die if I don't make a diagnosis, which is where you come in. I can't do it alone, I need your extra minds, extra eyes, I need you to play detective. I need you to find out why Katie is having seizures, I know you're tired, you're busy, you got more work than you can possibly handle. I understand, so I'm gonna give you an incentive. Whoever finds the answer rides with me, Katie needs surgery. You get to do what no interns get to do- scrub in to assist on an advanced procedure. Dr. Baileys gonna hand you Katie's chart, the clock is ticking fast, people. If we're gonna save Katie's life, we have to do it soon" Derek walked out of the room before all the interns could race to get the chart on the table.

"This ain't going to be fun" Maggie reached over and grabbed the papers and then walking out of the room.

Maggie stood in the E.R. writing some notes on the chart she received earlier, "You just page me?" Alex asked the nurse, making Maggie look up.

"Yes. 4-Bs still short of breath" She told him.

"Look, give the antibiotics time to work" Alex said, looking back at the patients chart.

"The antibiotic should have worked by now" The nurse pressed more.

"She's old she's freaking ancient, she's lucky she still breathing. I got a shot to scrub in downstairs on a patient that wasn't alive during the Civil War. Don't page me again" He handed her back the chart and walked away.

Maggie groaned at Alex's actions, stepping out of the E.R. so she could go to the library.

"Hey, I want in on Shepherds surgery. You guys have been the interns on Katie's since the start" Christina walked up to Maggie with Meredith by her side, "You want to work together? If we find the answer, we have a 50-50 chance of scrubbing in"

"50-50?" Maggie asked, looking at Meredith and then Christina.

"She doesn't want in"

"Well, neither do I" Maggie shrugged "If we find it, you can scrub in"

"Why don't you want it?" Christina asked.

"Because he's my brother and I don't want to have to be near the guy if I don't have too" Maggie explained, walking off to find more answers in the library.

The thee girls sat on the floor in the library, Maggie had the chart and a couple of books scattered around her.

"So she doesn't have anoxia, chronic renal failure it acidosis, it's not a tumor because her C.T. clean" Christina listed off the reasons that they had come up with but dismissed quickly, "Are you seriously not gonna tell me why you won't work with Shepherd?"

"No. What about infection?" Meredith replied.

"Nope, there's no white count and she has no C. LT. lesions, no fevers, nothing in her spinal tap" Maggie answered Meredith with the stuff she found.

"Just tell me" Christina said after.

"You can't comment, make a face or react in any way" Meredith waiting for Christina to look at her, "We has sex"

Maggie pressed her lips together and closed her eyes, that was the last thing she wanted to hear.

"What about an aneurysm" Christina asked.

"No blood on the C.T. and no headaches" Meredith shook her head, debunking the possibility.

"So there isn't any grub use, no pregnancy and no trauma" Maggie groaned again, they were not getting as far as they had hoped.

"Was he good?" Christina looked over at Meredith and asked, "I mean, he looks like he's be good. Was it any good?"

Maggie really was not interested in hearing about her older brothers love life, she didn't care what he did. She watched Meredith her up from the floor and set the book back into its rightful area.

"We're out of answers, what If no one comes up with anything" Meredith said, her tone made it seem like she was worried.

"You mean, what if she dies?" Maggie questioned.

"Yeah"

"This is gonna sound really bad but I really wanted that surgery" Christina leaned her head against the bookcase and sighed.

"It would've been cool to be the first person to figure it out" Maggie hummed along.

"She's just never gonna get the chance to turn into a person, the sum total of her existence will be almost willing miss teen whatever" Meredith looked between the two, "You wanna know what her pageant talent is?" She asked, looking at Christina.

"They have talent?" Christina sassed back.

"Rhythmic Gymnastics" Meredith said letting out a small laugh.

"Oh, come on" Christina said laughing along.

"No foreal, what even is rhythmic gymnastics?" Maggie asked, letting out a small chuckle herself.

"I think it's something with a ball and a-"

Maggie froze in place, letting her eyes wonder around as if that would help with the possibility of getting it right, "What?" Christina finally asked, "Maggie, what?"

"We've got to go, come on" She shot up from her sitting position, "I think I have an idea"

She ran out of the library with the two women following closely behind, "What's going on?"

"She fell" Maggie called out, "During talent rehearsals, she twisted her ankle and fell"

"How do you know that?" Christina asked.

"I talked to Katie's parents, after she told me she twisted her ankle. I thought that getting all the information might be best for the long run" Maggie ran down the hallway, turning silently when she heard an elevator ding.

"Oh. Oh, Dr. Shepherd, just one moment" Christina called out as soon as she saw the back of his head, "Katie competes in beauty pageants"

"I know that but we have to save her life, anyway" Derek joked.

"Okay, she has no headaches, no neck pain, her C.T. is clean. There's no medical proof of an aneurysm-"

"Right"

"But what if she has an aneurysm, anyway?" Christina finished.

"There are no indicators" Derek said, shrugging it off.

"She twisted her ankle practicing for the pageant, Derek" Maggie spike up, trying to help Christina.

"Look, I appreciate you guys trying to help, but-"

"She fell, Derek!" Maggie yelled, interrupting him.

"When she twisted her ankle, she fell" Meredith tried.

"It was no big deal, not even a bump on the head. She got right back up, iced her ankle and everything was fine, it was a fall so minor, her doctor didn't even think to mention it when I was taking her history but she did fall" Christina almost pleaded with the guy, pushing the elevator open every time it tried to close.

"You know what the chance is that a minor fall could burst an aneurysm? One in a million- literally" Derek told the three, leaning as the door closed so that they could hear him.

Maggie let out a small laugh as she watched her brother disappear, "Yeah, I don't know I though that would even work" She turned around, beginning to head back to wherever she was actually needed.

She felt someone grab her arm, making her turn back toward the elevator, revealing her brother, "Lets go"

"Where?" Christina asked.

"To find out if Katie is one in a million" He walked off from the three interns, not bothering looking back to see if they were following.

Maggie stood next to Meredith and Christina as they watched Katie's monitor to check for a tumor, so far they haven't found anything and if Maggie was being honest, it was making her sweat.

"Holy shit, Derek. Look" Maggie leaned her body over the table and pointed at the minute hemorrhage.

"I'll be damned" Derek let out, shocked as he looked at the monitor.

"There it is" Maggie said, letting out a breathe.

"It's minute but it's there. It's a subarachnoid hemorrhage, she's bleeding into her brain" Derek looked closer at the screen, nodding his head before walking out of the room.

The three interns followed after him, none of them saying a word.

"She could have gone her whole life without it ever being a problem. One tap in the right spot-" Derek snapped his fingers.

"It exploded" Christina finished for him.

"Exactly. Now I can fix it, you three did great work. Love to stay and kiss your asses but I got to tell Katie's parents she's having surgery" Derek walked them all the way to the nurses station, leaning on the counter he looked at the nurse, "Katie Bryce's chart, please"

"Here you go"

He grabbed the chart and set it down on the counter, opening it so that he could write down his findings.

"Dr. Shepherd, you said that you'd pick someone to scrub in if we helped?" Christa stepped toward Derek and asked.

"Oh, yes. Right. I'm sorry I can't take all of you, it's gonna be a full house" He smiled at both Christina and Maggie, "Meredith, I'll see you in the O.R."

Christina turned her body to look at Meredith expectingly as Maggie rolled her eyes and began to walk away from the situation.

After a little while, she felt Christina walk madly beside her, "Why aren't you mad?"

Maggie let out a scoff, "Why are you? You can't expect someone, let alone an intern to do any favors for you and you can't trust a man around a women, he had sex with"

"But you're his sister" She pressed.

"Trust me, Christina, the last thing that'll win me any points in this hospital is being Derek's sister. He's probably already went to every doctor in this hospital, telling them not to trust me" Maggie gave Christina one last look before heading to the stairs, she wasn't pissed or even disappointed, Derek was always going to treat her the same shitty way and that wasn't going to change.

Maggie brought a stack of cross word puzzle, she liked to do them on her free time and sometimes when she was around people she even brought out the madlibs book she bought.

"Okay, Iz. I need a noun" Maggie told her, looking down at the blank line on the book, waiting for an answer.

"Maybe Meredith couldn't-"

"That's not a noun" Maggie interrupts, looking at Christina who was in no mood to talk.

"Barcelona" Izzie finally answered Maggie.

"Ooo, good one" She laughed, looking up at Izzie who wasn't looking at her but instead someone else in the room, turning her body slightly she noticed Meredith.

"I'll tell him I change my mind, you can have-"

"Don't do me any favors, it's fine" Christina snapped back.

"Christina-"

"You know what, you did a cutthroat thing. Deal with it, don't come to me for absolution. You wanna be a shark, be a shark" Christina interrupted her. Maggie nodded her head along with Christina, silently agreeing with her.

"I'm not-"

"Oh, yes you are. Only it makes you feel all bad in your warm, gooey places" Christina paused for a second, "No screw you. I don't get picked for surgeries cause I slept with my boss and I didn't get into med school cause I have a famous mother. Some of us have to earn what we get"

Maggie watched Meredith leave the room, she wasn't going to comfort her and nobody else made the efforts to do so either so she shrug her shoulders and went back to her book.

"Okay, part of the body"

Maggie was back in the E.R., this time she didn't have a solid reason to be in there, she just wanted to she if that Alex guy was still being a jackass.

"She's still short of breath. Did you get an ABG or a chest film?" The Chief stood in front of Alex and said.

"Oh, yes sir, I did" Alex smirked back.

"And why did you see?" The Chief questioned further.

"Oh, well, I had a lot of patients last night"

"Name the common causes of post-op fever" The Chief quizzed.

"Uh, Yes" Alex responded, leaning into his pocket to grab a notebook.

"From your head, not from a book. Don't look it up, learn it. It should be in your head. Make the common causes of post-op fever" The Chief asked again.

"Uh... the common causes of post-"

"Can anybody name the common causes of post-op fever?" the Chief interrupted Alex and asked the room full of interns.

"Wind, water, wound, walking, wonder drugs. The five W's. A lot of the time it's wind: splinting it pneumonia" She looked right at Alex, "Pneumonia is easy to assume, especially if you think you're too busy to actually run the tests"

"What do you think is wrong with 4-B?" The Chief asked, looking at Maggie.

"I'd say it was the fourth W, walking. Shes probably a prime candidate for a pulmonary embolus" Maggie told him confidently.

"How would you diagnose"

"Spiral C.T., V/Q scan, provide 02, dose with heparin and consult for an IVC filter" Maggie's eyes shifted from Alex to the Chief.

"Do exactly as she says, then tell your resident that I want you off this case" The Chief didn't bother looking at Alex, instead he stepped closer to Maggie. "You look so much like Derek, I'd know you anywhere"

Maggie just smiled along with the man, she wasn't about to tell him that the compliment that he tried giving her was pretty far from a compliment.

"Welcome to the game"

Maggie was thankful for the 48 hours to be over, she was excited to go back to apartment and sleep for as long as her body needed.

"Here's my number, just in case" George said to the group, handing them a piece of paper.

"Thanks, Georgie" Maggie laughed, shoving the paper into her pocket. She fished her keys out of her pocket and unlocked her Jeep.

"Why would you need a car like that in Seattle?" Christina asked, looking at the gray Jeep.

"There's beautiful forest to be explored, Yang" Maggie called out, giving her Jeep a little slap of appreciation.

"Gross" Christina replied back, making Maggie laugh.

Maggie jumped into her car and started the engine, pulling out of the parking lot and headed to her apartment that was only a couple blocks from the hospital. She thought back on the last 48 hours, she actually had a pretty good time, minus her interaction with Alex but even then, putting him in his place was pretty fun.
