Against All Odds
Today, Y/N, Taehyung, Jungkook, and Saanvi were on their way to India, embarking on a journey to seek approval from both sets of parents for their marriage. Their flight was just about to land at Delhi IG International Airport, and the anticipation was palpable.
Although Y/N's home was in Delhi, they decided to visit Saanvi's home in Haryana first. Saanvi had grown up in a picturesque village, surrounded by lush green fields and a close-knit community. The group chatted animatedly on the flight, with Saanvi sharing stories about her childhood and the traditions of her family.
As the plane touched down, they felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. After collecting their luggage, they made their way to the car that would take them to Saanvi's family home. The drive to Haryana was filled with laughter and camaraderie, but underneath, there was an undercurrent of anxiety about the upcoming meetings.
Saanvi's parents were traditional and deeply rooted in their cultural values. Winning their approval would not be easy.
Upon arriving at Saanvi's home, her mother rushed outside, speaking in a single breath, "Saanvi, hurry inside! We have guests here to see you."
"Mummy, my friends are here..." Saanvi couldn't even finish her sentence before her mother, too excited to notice, hurried back inside.
Saanvi felt utterly sad, and seeing this, Y/N came up to her and said, "It's okay, Berry. Everything will be fine. Let's go inside first."
As soon as they went inside, Saanvi noticed three unfamiliar faces. There was a middle-aged couple and a boy who seemed to be their son. The scene clearly indicated that they had come to discuss a marriage proposal for Saanvi.
"Hello, Saanvi," the boy greeted her, standing up from his seat.
Saanvi forced a smile and then greeted the middle-aged couples, "Namaste..."
Inside, Saanvi was fuming with anger while her friends watched the situation unfold sadly.
"Guys, come sit," Saanvi pointed to an empty couch and then headed towards the kitchen.
"Mummy... what's all this? I told you I was bringing someone to meet," Saanvi said angrily.
"Keep your voice down, Saanvi, the guests will hear," her mother replied disinterestedly without even looking at her.
"Enough, Mummy. You always do whatever you want. I don't want this marriage. You go and tell them to leave," Saanvi's words were cut short by a hard slap on her cheek.
She turned around to see her father, his face contorted with anger. "Now you'll teach us what's right and wrong? You pick someone up from the trash and expect us to accept it?" he said venomously.
Saanvi's eyes filled with tears as she held her cheek, the sting of the slap resonating with the harshness of her father's words.
Saanvi took a deep breath, trying to steady her voice. "Papa, Jungkook is not just anyone. He's the person I love and want to spend my life with. You haven't even given him a chance."
Her father's face softened for a moment, but then he hardened his resolve. "This is not how things are done in our family, Saanvi. We have traditions and expectations."
Y/N decided to head to the kitchen to help Saanvi and her mother, but her feet stopped in the middle of the way as she heard the sound of a slap.
Gathering her courage, Y/N continued towards the kitchen, where she saw Saanvi holding her cheek, tears welling up in her eyes. Saanvi's father stood with his hand still raised, his face twisted in anger, while her mother looked away, avoiding eye contact.
Before Saanvi could respond, Y/N stepped forward, speaking with calm determination. "Uncle, Aunty, we understand your concerns. But we came here to earn your trust and approval. Jungkook loves Saanvi deeply and respects your traditions. Please give him a chance to prove it."
Saanvi's father glared at Y/N, his stare so intense that Y/N felt her resolve dissolving, her heart pounding, and fear creeping inside her.
"Your friend is just like you... mannerless and trash. Quietly listen to me and go change into something nice. Understand?" Saanvi's father spoke harshly, not budging an inch.
Her mother stood silently, watching the spectacle unfold. She wanted to help her daughter but was too afraid of her husband.
"It's okay, Saanvi. Let's go and change," Y/N said, gently leading Saanvi out of the kitchen and into her room to help her get ready.
As they reached the room, Y/N spoke softly while helping Saanvi change into a more presentable outfit. "Let's just let the guests leave first, then we'll talk."
Saanvi didn't say anything, just nodded. Y/N was her only source of strength at that moment.
"Your parents don't know much about Jungkook yet, except that he's a foreigner. When they find out how famous he is, how much property he has, and how deeply he loves you, they'll come around. They believe that if there's money, their daughter will be happy in the marriage. So don't worry too much," Y/N tried to comfort Saanvi.
Upon hearing this, Saanvi managed a small smile. With Y/N's help, she finished getting ready, and the two of them returned to the guest room.
As they walked in, the atmosphere was still tense, but Y/N noticed that Saanvi's parents were watching them closely. The boy and his parents were engaged in small talk, clearly sensing the underlying tension.
Y/N guided Saanvi to a seat, and they sat down, trying to maintain a calm demeanour. Jungkook and Taehyung joined them, offering silent support.
Saanvi's father, noticing the composed yet determined look on his daughter's face, sighed heavily. "Alright, we'll proceed with the introductions now. Saanvi, meet Rehan and his family. They've come with a proposal."
Rehan smiled politely, trying to ease the situation. "It's nice to meet you, Saanvi. I've heard a lot about you."
Saanvi nodded politely, though her mind was elsewhere. She was waiting for the right moment, the moment when she and her friends could finally have an important conversation with her parents.
Once the guest finished their tea, they expressed their gratitude and took their leave, thanking Saanvi's parents for their hospitality and saying they would await further discussion.
After the guests left, Saanvi firmly stated, "Please tell them I'm not going to marry their son. Jungkook is my boyfriend."
Saanvi's father glared at her angrily, but before he could respond, Jungkook stepped in between them. Folding his hands in a respectful gesture, he said, "Sir, I'm pleading. Please give me a chance to explain myself. Please, sir."
Saanvi's father took a deep breath and sternly replied, "Okay, you want to prove yourself, right?" Jungkook nodded earnestly.
"Okay then, go and cook dinner for everyone. Anyway, Saanvi doesn't know how to cook," her father ordered.
"Papa, stop... What nonsense is this? Why should he cook?" Saanvi interjected protectively.
"Because if he wants to marry you, he should be able to take care of you. If he can't even cook, what good is he?" her father replied angrily.
"You are right, sir. I'll cook. Rest assured," Jungkook said confidently, heading to the kitchen.
"Okay, I'll help you," Saanvi said, preparing to follow him, but her father stopped her.
"I'll help him. He won't find anything in the kitchen," Saanvi's mother said, heading after Jungkook.
Back in the room, Y/N, Saanvi, Taehyung, and Saanvi's father sat in heavy silence. The atmosphere was tense and charged with unspoken emotions.
Y/N, sensing the need to ease the tension, spoke up softly, "Uncle, I know this isn't easy for you. But Jungkook is truly an amazing person. He cares deeply for Saanvi."
Her father grunted, still visibly upset. "Caring isn't enough. This isn't some fairy tale. Life is hard, and traditions matter."
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Jungkook looked around, slightly overwhelmed by the unfamiliar layout. Saanvi's mother watched him for a moment before stepping in. "Let me show you where everything is."
"Thank you, Aunty," Jungkook said, smiling gratefully. He quickly got to work, chopping vegetables and preparing ingredients with a focused determination. Saanvi's mother observed him, slowly warming up to his genuine effort.
"Is he your boyfriend?" Saanvi's father asked, indicating Taehyung.
"Yes, Uncle," Y/N nodded, her tone steady.
"That's why Saanvi has gone astray, spending time with you," her father replied sarcastically.
Saanvi opened her mouth to retort, but Y/N quickly signalled with her eyes for her to remain calm. Saanvi closed her mouth, trying to control her frustration.
"What do you both do?" Saanvi's father asked Taehyung, his tone still sceptical.
"We're singers and dancers, famous K-pop stars from Korea," Taehyung replied politely.
"Ooh, famous... then let me get some information from the internet about all of you," her father said, picking up his phone and starting to search.
As he delved deeper into the search results, his eyes widened in surprise. The more he read, the more he realized the extent of their fame and wealth. Despite this, they were enduring his scrutiny and criticism because of their love for Saanvi. He began to feel a tinge of regret but tried to maintain his composure.
"I see, you all are BTS, famous personalities," he said, his tone slightly softer but still guarded.
Just then, Jungkook and Saanvi's mother entered the room with the dinner. The rich aroma of the meal filled the room, temporarily shifting the focus from the tense conversation.
Saanvi's mother placed the dishes on the table with a smile, and Jungkook followed, his expression a mix of determination and hope. The meal looked delicious, a blend of Korean and Indian cuisines that showcased Jungkook's effort and dedication.
Saanvi's father took a deep breath, clearly reassessing his initial impressions. The dinner was served, and everyone began to eat. The atmosphere was still tense, but the shared meal provided a moment of respite and a chance for everyone to engage in more relaxed conversation.
As they ate, Saanvi's father quietly observed Jungkook, who was attentively serving others and participating in the conversation. The initial reservations began to soften, replaced by a begrudging respect for Jungkook's commitment and the quality of the meal.
After dinner, Jungkook began collecting the dishes, but Saanvi's mother insisted, "Let me handle this. You must be tired. Go and rest."
Saanvi's father glanced at Jungkook and Saanvi, then surprisingly said, "Yes, you all should rest now." His tone was unexpectedly soft this time. He said this and then retreated to his room.
A little while later, he returned, holding an envelope. "This is for you," he said, handing Jungkook an envelope containing money. "It's a tradition in our house to give a token of appreciation to anyone who cooks for the first time."
Jungkook looked at the envelope, still shocked. He gazed at Saanvi's father with wide, innocent eyes, clearly touched by the gesture.
As Saanvi's father turned to leave, he added quietly, "Also, make sure my daughter is always happy with you." He smiled softly and then retreated to his room.
Everyone stood in stunned silence as the unexpected gesture sank in. Then, Y/N, overwhelmed with joy, exclaimed, "Oh my god, Berry... Your dad approved of the marriage!" She excitedly hugged Saanvi.
The room was filled with expressions of relief and happiness. Saanvi's face lit up with a radiant smile, and tears of joy streamed down her cheeks. Jungkook, moved by the moment, gently wiped her tears and held her close.
"Finally, we cleared the hardest stage," Saanvi murmured, her voice muffled in Jungkook's embrace.
Jungkook hugged her tightly, sharing in her relief and joy.
From his room, Saanvi's father watched the scene with a subtle smile, whispering to himself, "I hope Saanvi is always happy."
The next morning, the group gathered their belongings and said heartfelt goodbyes to Saanvi's parents. The farewell was tinged with a mix of relief and anticipation, knowing that the next challenge lay ahead at Y/N's home.
As they departed for Y/N's house, the drive was filled with a mixture of excitement and nervous energy. Y/N's family was already familiar with BTS because Y/N is a crazy fan girl for the group. Her room was adorned with posters and memorabilia, a testament to her admiration for the group. This familiarity with BTS was expected to make the process smoother.
Y/N had always been clear about her disinterest in marriage, often stating that she had no intention of settling down. Her parents, while supportive, were concerned that Y/N's reluctance might prevent her from ever marrying. They had hoped that by now she would change her mind and embrace the idea of marriage, even if it meant marrying someone she chose herself. This lingering concern was the reason they were cautious about giving their approval.
"Every challenge faced in love is a testament to its strength and resilience."
