ㅤ"...𝐘𝐎𝐔'𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐄? 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐕𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐒?"
"As much as I want to deny it, Spencer, the evidence is sadly pointing to undead creatures who suck the blood out of unsuspecting humans," May sighed, crossing her arms.
She was in her room, back in her childhood home. Billy was in the living room, intently watching a game on the TV. Jacob, on the other hand, was in the pack house. Ever since their talk, he's been oddly silent, frowning most times as he looked to be mulling over her words constantly.
He hadn't even been to Bella's. She knew that for a fact, based on their link.
As for her, she's mostly been to her house, the pack house, and the magical field. She just alternates her time there, not yet joining her boys on their patrols, wanting more to master her abilities so that she can help them better. It was a decision she was hesitant to make at first, but Sam was there to convince her that they can handle it. After all, they've been doing this even before she got back.
She made sure not to look too offended at his words, knowing how true it was.
So, she was mostly left to her own devices, especially since she was still helping them in her own way. Her traveling has gotten better; it was clear that being in that field and being in the company of Remus helped significantly. Of course, she knew that those two things won't always be available to her, so she made sure to practice at home, or any other place, without Remus or away from the field.
It was difficult—still difficult, more like—for her to travel and enter the spirit world. But the feeling of being pulled to it has become more easier to conjure as long as she concentrated on one thing; for example, her breathing, or the sound of birds chirping. It was definitely easier to do that here than DC where sound pollution beat out even the sound of her heart sometimes. The enhanced hearing didn't help, either.
However, now that she wasn't using her cases as an excuse not to do her practices, she has made some improvements. She realized that navigating the spirit world was easy based on her experience traveling to Seattle, but entering it was the opposite. Regardless, she had hope. And a bit of desperation, considering she'll only be in La Push for another three days.
Spencer sighed, and May could swear she could feel his dejectedness all the way from DC. "Sooner or later, we're gonna be called to Seattle, May. And I'm not looking forward to it."
"I'm not excited about it either, but the vampires here—the good ones—are helping me, too," she told him. "They were able to give me details that helped paint the picture. But I think they're still in denial."
"Paint what picture? And in denial how?"
"Well, from what I can tell, this vampire army was created for them," she said. "There's this red-headed vampire who's been around according to the pack. And the vampires told me her name's Victoria, who had friends called Laurent and James. The latter was more of a friend, of course, and well he tried to kill this human girl who's mated to one of the good vampires. Good vampires had to kill James, and now Victoria seems to be out for revenge."
"That makes total sense," Spencer scoffed. "She could've created the army to kill the coven of good vampires. Yeah, that makes sense. Then why are the good vampires in denial?"
"Because they believe that the Volturi—their ruling coven, apparently—is gonna put a stop to it. But I think it's bull."
"Why?"
"Because the Volturi doesn't like 'em either."
Spencer hummed. "Yeah, they need a reality check. An enemy of my enemy is my friend."
"Exaclty what I said!" She giggled. "God, I don't get why they don't think this through. It's the only thing that makes sense. Especially when I looked closely into the victims. Majority of the missing people are locals! Who live in Forks! They know the area!"
The two continued to talk more, going from one conversation topic to another. It was refreshing for May, who missed him so much. He was her twin, after all. And their rough patch was hard on her, considering they had been friends for years. So she was glad that they were back to normal. At least, normal enough, considering that she was something more now.
Admittedly, she still hasn't forgiven him completely after what he did; after all, he'd broken her trust. But she knew that she will, eventually.
"Oh yeah," Spencer called. "Derek misses you. He's been hounding me to tell you that. I keep telling him to just call you, but he said you guys weren't close enough for it or something."
"He-- He said that?"
"Gosh, you're hopeless already. Remember, you're doing our dishes for a month. And please, just call the man."
"I will. I promise."
Ever since she came back to La Push, May has been incredibly hyperaware of everything that's been going on in the rez. Billy figures that it's her connection to the spirit world and nature, that it's warning her of what might be coming.
He explains that they've always had magic in their blood, anyway. And it's no surprise that she was feeling it ten-fold due to who she was. So, to clear her head, she decided on taking a stroll through the forest, her favorite place in the entire world. It always felt like she was more alive surrounded by nature.
She was aimlessly walking beside Remus, who had decided on making sure she's kept safe. She was thankful, of course, even if it was a bit unnecessary. She didn't want to bother the rest of the pack—who had their assignments already in place—and the only thing that stopped them from going crazy at the thought of her being alone was if Remus was there.
Practically forgetting the fact that she, too, can transform into a giant wolf.
But she appreciated their concern. And it wasn't like she didn't enjoy Remus' company. The young wolf was big for normal wolves, but still clearly a...puppy. He was excitable, happy, hyper, and overall, acts like a Doberman with zoomies. And he'd gotten so close to the pack that when they shift, it was like they were all part of one big pack. He'd run with them, and howl with them. It was like they had a little brother. Kind of.
May giggled as she watched Remus try to chase a small mouse, shoving his nose down between two aerial roots of a giant tree and whining when he hurt himself. He quickly pulled his snout away and shook his head, clearing it from the sudden pain of his head hitting a hard surface. He then turned his head to chase another thing.
She carelessly hopped over a root and balanced on another. She supposes that if anyone saw her right now, they would seriously question her sanity. After all, it was the middle of the night; it was very dark—which didn't matter considering her enhanced eyesight—and it was very cold, and she was wearing a tank top and a pair of shorts. She really did just hop out of bed and felt the odd need to be in the forest.
Before she could continue her frolicking, the packs' voices suddenly filled her head. Their angry and panicked tones bombarding her so hard that she nearly fell over, which caused Remus to run over to her in confusion. She groaned, pushing herself up and looked towards the source. The rest of the pack was woken up because of Paul and Jared running after something. And even the wolf with her realized this, as he began to howl.
"Come on," she told the pup. Instead of shifting however, she ran towards her packmates as a human. Because unlike them, she hadn't carried an extra set of clothes and she refused to let others see her naked. Still, even with two legs, she was faster than Remus.
Soon, she came upon a sight she didn't expect. Paul was in the water in his wolf form, fighting with the large vampire she's yet to know the name of.
"Paul!" She shouted, earning everyone's attention. Of course, the boy in question quickly shrugged the vampire off, growling in his face before jumping over to stand beside May. The one who'd done the patrol with him was Jared, who quickly flanked her and Remus. "What the hell happened?"
"Victoria happened," the wet vampire growled in her direction, causing both Paul and Jared to growl at him. "If your wolf hadn't stopped me, we would've gotten her!"
"You crossed the boundary line, vampire," she frowned. "Regardless of a common enemy, we still have a treaty."
"The treaty let her get away--"
"Emmett!" Carlisle scolded. "She's right, the treaty still stands." He then looked at May, eyeing her outfit oddly. "I apologize."
"And I accept," she told him with a tilt of her head. "Even you did cross into our territory. Next time, be mindful, alright?"
"Of course."
May hummed. "Now do you still think Victoria's got nothing to do with this?"
Emmett shook water out of his hair, finally joining his family. "What do you mean?"
"Why is it that after all this time, you were able to see Victoria?" She asked rhetorically. "Who then led you straight here, right by the boundary, jumping between the two sides purposely?"
Jasper couldn't help but smirk. "You're very intuitive, agent." He looked at his leader. "She's got a point. Victoria knew about the wolves, the boundary line, and came here to test it out."
"She wanted to see if we worked together," she told him. "She's intuitive too. And was able to figure out our...agreement very quickly. You think she's got some ability too? Like, I don't know, self-preservation?"
"It...it would make sense," Alice frowned. "She knew she had to escape my visions, and she evaded capture from us and the wolves. I...Edward...?"
The boy in question pursed his lips and looked towards May. "An enemy of my enemy is my friend. That's what you said."
"Yeah, so?"
"If the Volturi and Victoria are working together...do you think we can work together too?"
May grimaced. "Look, we have issues with the red-head, not the Volturi. Unless vampires pose a threat to our people, I can't agree to an alliance with you. But if you tell me that my people might get hurt, I'll...we'll be there to back you up. For now...good luck to you."
"Well that was a shit show," she told both Paul and Jared as soon as they've shifted back. "You guys okay?"
"Are you actually willing to work with the Cullens?" Paul wondered, still shaking in anger at the thought of a vampire on their land. He'd gotten so worked up at the scent of the hulking one entering the rez that he barely even registered that he'd pounced.
"Only if it's beneficial for us," she reminded him. "If those vampires come here, we're gonna need them too. I don't think we're enough to fight what could possibly be a group of twenty-two of the not-so-friendly types."
Jared looked at Paul. "She's right, man. Now come on, Sam's wondering where we are."
"I'll meet you guys there," May told them. "I just have to do something."
"You sure?"
"I have Rem with me," she smiled, running her hand through the fur on the said wolf's head. "Now, go."
As soon as they were out of earshot, she fished her phone out of her pocket. It was already sunrise, and May didn't sleep enough. But she was running on adrenaline, and she was feeling a little reckless. And so she made the sudden decision to call the one person who's been waiting to hear from her.
After two rings, he answered. "Hey gorgeous."
"Hi, Derek."
